Sacrament of Matrimony
Is a sacrament in which a man and woman are attracted by mutual love. - Signifies the union of Christ and the church.

Purpose of Marriage 1. Help one another live a holy, happy and successful life. 2. Bring forth and educate children. Entourage - Special people selected by the bride and the groom to make their wedding memorable. Principal Sponsor - To stand witnesses to their vows. Best Man and Maid of Honor - Assist the couple in their needs. Usher and Bridesmaid - Guide the couple along the way. Candle Sponsor - They brighten their path. Veil Sponsor - They clothe them altogether. Cord Sponsor - They bind them as one. Ring Bearer - Carry the symbol of their love. Coin Bearer - Carry the symbols of their treasures. Flower Girls - Shower the aisle with flower. Wedding Ring - Is the symbol of the couples love and fidelity to one another. Groom and the Bride - Are the ministers of the sacrament of Matrimony. Priest

Is the official witness of the church.

White Garment / Wedding Gown - Symbol of purity and fidelity. Candle - Symbolizes Christ the light of the world. Veil Cord Ring Symbol of sharing, total self-giving and commitment.

Symbol of the burdens of matrimony to be carried in common.

Symbol of love and loyalty.

Sacrament of Holy Orders


Sacrament through which men receive the power and grace to perform the sacred duties of bishops, priests and deacon.

Ordinand - Person being ordained. Ordination - Sacramental act by which one is order of bishops, priests and deacons. Deacon - Means servant, because their first duty is to serve the church. - They can assist the bishops and the priests during the Holy Mass to say the Homily, to give Holy Communion, to appreciate marriage, to bless, to celebrate the funerals, to baptize. Seminarian - Ordained deacon a few months before his ordination to priesthood. Functions of a Deacon 1. He helps the priest and the bishops in serving the people of God. 2. He can baptize, distribute the Eucharist, assist at marriages bring communion to the dying and officiate at funerals. 3. He leads the people in prayer reads the scriptures, preaches and teaches.

Priest -

One who intervenes between two other persons to reconcile. A person who performs religious duties and ceremonies.

Functions of a Priest 1. He brings to people the Good News of salvation and leads them to conversion, renewal and growth. 2. He stands as a mediator between God and His people. 3. He takes the image of a Good Shepherd who gives Himself to the people of His church and the World. Bishop - The representative of Christ and the Image of God the Father. Functions of the Bishop 1. He takes care of His own diocese and makes sure that the truths of the Catholic faith and the principles of morality are correctly taught. 2. He is the head of His own diocese but he does not possess full authority since all bishops of the country come together to set practice and policy to be followed. In our country we call this CBCP (Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines). Rite of ordination to the Priesthood It takes the place during the Mass and its principal divisions as are follows. The Instruction Presentation of the Ordinand The examination of candidates as to their moral fitness The Bishop begins His exhortations by naming the special duties of the priest: offerings sacrifice, blessing, ruling, preaching and baptizing. Then the ordinand is now fully invested in the garment symbolic of priesthood.

It is a sign of purity and cleanliness of the body and soul.

Cincture Chasuble Stole

- it is tied on the waist of the Alb. - the last vestment that priest put. Chasuble means Little House - the center of the stole is worn around the back of the neck and the two ends are traditionally crossed, the left side over the right, by priests.

Sacred Books Lectionary - the book that contains all the readings used during the Mass. Sacramentary - it contains all the prayer and rites used by the priest during the mass. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent. Putting Ashes on the forehead reminds our nothingness before the eyes of God. Lent forty-day preparation before the celebration of Easter to remember the Paschal mystery of Christ, our Lord. It also reminds us the 40 days prayer and sacrifice of Jesus in the descent before this public ministry. - also called Kuwaresma in our Filipino language which means forty days of prayer and sacrifice.

Fasting - act of eating only one full-meal a day or lessening the amount or contact of the food and no-in between meals unless the person needs it. - those who are obliged to fast are those who are 18-60 years old. - those who are sick are excused but can take other form of penance called as atonement. Abstinence - refraining from eating the meat of any warm-blooded animals especially on the days Appointed by the Catholic Church.

Fast and Abstain on the days Appointed Ash Wednesday, Good Friday, and all Fridays during the Lenten season are the days of fasting and abstinence. If there is a need for meat to be eaten by the sick, atonement can be done to replace the sacrifice. Pabasa or Chanting reading and singing the passion of our Lord.
