Growth of institution is dependent upon resources deployed by the institute towards its growth target. Human resources play an important role in achieving the goals and objectives of institution concerned .This is more so in the case of academic institutions where in human resources play vital role in shaping the future course of action. Mechanical department of SATHYABAMA UNIVERSITY has been in existence right from inception of erstwhile Sathyabama engineering college in the year 1988.Right from the inception mechanical department has been part and parcel of Sathyabama university growth story. Faculty of the department is well qualified and is drawn from various streams of mechanical engineering like design, thermal, manufacturing, industrial engineering and energy. The staff students ratio has been maintained at the rate as mandated by statutory authorities .The department is well endowed with experienced faculty with exposure to industry environment. This goes a long way in imparting quality education for the students and at the same time benefiting the society. The geographical distribution of the faculty is also widespread and varied. The faculty is drawn mostly from southern states of India. Mechanical department is mostly male student oriented one as far as student profile goes . Admission to the department is based purely on the rank obtained by students in the all India entrance examination conducted by SATHYABAMA UNIVERSITY on yearly basis .There is no restriction with respect to the geographical distribution of the students. Majority of the students belong to southern states of India and considerable percentage of students belongs to northern states namely UP, Bihar, Jharkhand and north eastern states. With a view to impart quality education, curriculum changes were made on a regular basis by incorporating prevalent industry practices and suggestions made by members of board of studies drawn from industry. The ground work for preparing an appropriate curriculum would be done by faculty after going through curriculum of NITs, IITs and various other universities. They zero in on appropriate curriculum by interacting with industry experts and referring the suggested curriculum to the various panels formed for the purpose of curriculum changes. The faculty is engaged

in getting vital inputs from external examiners and consolidating these inputs in tangible form for proper curriculum changes as mandated by industrial practices. The department can proudly state the fact that the dropout rate of students almost zero and success rate is showing healthy upward trend. Mechanical engineering department boasts of state of art laboratories for imparting practical courses to prepare students to have hands on experience. Recently computational fluid dynamics lab has been added to existing lab courses by commissioning 40 systems with up to date CFD softwares. SOLID WORKS software was added to CAD/CAM curriculum apart from the existing

ProE,CATIA,Ansys. A computerized diesel engine (VCR) was installed in thermal engineering lab for enhancing the practical exposure of the students. The department engaged in looking after department library with 5000 books to cater to the needs of student community. In each semester students are issued books pertaining to the subjects specified in the curriculum. To enhance the learning experience of the students audio visual stream is used in the form of LCD projectors and etc. Students are taken for industrial visits for giving real time exposure for industrial practices. From time to time guest lectures were arranged. The faculty of mechanical department for encourage to take part in faculty development programmes conducted by various reputed institutions. In the last five years most of the staff members availed this facility to enhance their skill set. Faculty of mechanical department are assigned a set of students for counseling purposes and they keep track of academic progress of assigned students and inform their parents regarding the students wellbeing. Mechanical engineering department has bagged two projects from IGCAR for conducting experimental studies on Pressure drop devices and flow distribution in main vessel cooling system with an outlay of forty lakhs for two years time period. The department of mechanical engineering offering research facility for all the streams of mechanical engineering. This encouragement offered by the institution resulted in faculty publishing articles in reputed international journals and national journals. A continual efforts is made for providing right sort of training for campus placement of student with active collaboration and inputs from placement cell of

our university. The placement record of mechanical department amply demonstrates the effectiveness of the placement training imparted to the students. More than seventy percent of the students opting for placement have been placed during the last five years time period. Those students who have opted for higher studies have been provided with books required in consultation with advisory bureau for higher studies. A team of students is designing an all terrain vehicle for taking part in an all India competition for students being sponsored by automobiles majors like Mahindra and Mahindra, Bajaj and JK tyres. The department is planning to offer dedicated facility for training in Robotics, CFD and Nano Technology with active cooperation from other department like Production, Electrical engineering, Electronics and Control systems. A dedicated research facility for Nano Technology has been commissioned recently. Procurement activities were initiated for undertaking various research activities and course work to be offered.
