A brief history of Handbridge
I HAVE lived in Handbridge for over 50 years and, just in that
relatively short time, I have seen many changes. The main change How the area has
has been in the loss and change in use of so many shops which, I changed over the
feel, were a great part of the community spirit where people could
meet, pass the time of day and, very often, forget what they had last 50 years
come to buy. by Len Morgan
In Handbridge we are served by an abundance of pubs, four to
be exact, each one different in character. Back at the turn of the
century, we had 13 pubs but some of them were in private houses (home brewed) off licences.
My three children went to St Mary’s School, on Overleigh Road. It has since closed and been
transferred to Old Wrexham Road as Overleigh St Mary’s. The old school is now a day nursery.
The former City High School for Girls and Grammar School for Boys are now combined as
Queen’s Park High School.
Western Command Military
HQ was converted into Capital
Bank and is now Bank of
Scotland. Abbeyfield sheltered
housing is built on the site
of the old Corona pop works
which later became Kwik Save
supermarket.
Queen’s Park House now
stands on the site of Queen’s
Park Lodge (1901) which
should have been preserved.
At one time, Handbridge
boasted three butchers, three
greengrocers, two chemists,
two dairies (Johnson’s and
Upton’s), one bank, and
Mealings the ironmonger
where you could get just Edgar’s Field in 1901
about any item you wanted.
The advent of the supermarket has had a disastrous effect on local shops all over the country,
taking with it a large slice of the British way of life. Out of all the many shops that have served the
community over the years only a few remain.
There are two other dramatic changes I have witnessed over the last 30 years or so, both
associated with the River Dee. One is the eyesore of a sandbank which has built up below
County Hall, collecting all manner of rubbish. The second is the state of the river bank between
Greenway Street and River Lane, known locally as the Stakes and the Marsh. In its heyday the
fishermen of Greenway Street kept it well managed and tidy. To them fishing was a way of life in
which they took a pride. It sickens me to see it now so I can’t imagine how they would feel. At one
time this area was known as God’s Little Acre. I wonder what they would call it now?

The Head Race on the Birkenhead

and were the fastest quad of the day.
The WJ16 with Leigh Horan, Lucy Adams, Joy Roberts and Caroline Withers also gained a
medal as did the WJ15 quad with Hannah Fishburn, Louise Tompkins, Leah Parker Turnock,
Numhom Sudsok and cox Ellen Russell.
In the final race the quad with Ozzy Ghobadi, Marcus Adam, Scott Wallace, and Chris

Flat-Foot and overpronation
by Peter Colhoun
I am alarmed when I read running magazines
today. They - and the corporate giant trainer
retailers - speak of ‘Pronation’ as a disease
that needs to be avoided at all costs.
In this month’s article, I will discuss what pronation is,
why it is normal, and when OVER-pronation becomes
a problem that needs treatment.

What is pronation?
Pronation a medical term affecting several joints
in the body. In terms of our feet, it is basically a
flattening of the long arch of the foot, coupled with
