Welcome to your Black Belt Year. Ask a hundred Black Belts what their rank means to them, you'll get a hundred different answers. Professional-level proficiency in a martial art. Knowing enough to begin truly learning. A stopping point on a lifelong journey. A pretty piece of cloth to keep the gi closed. Whatever the differences, most will agree that Black Belt represents accumulation of effort. Hundreds of hours of classes. Tens of thousands of kicks and punches. Innumerable bumps, nicks and bruises. None of the individual actions are anything particularly special, but put them all together and you join less than 1/100th of a percent of the population. The tasks in this manual underscore that aspect of Black Belt. You'll be asked to take daily or weekly action towards large personal tasks and goals. You'll accomplish unreasonable things this year. Black Belt is an unreasonable proposition. It's our hope that this year will challenge and empower you, and push you to realize how much you can accomplish when you decide to. Written description of a kata of your choice: (Short One is too easy, but any other form from previous ranks is acceptable.)
Technique Review: Graft ten techniques into a personal form with logical transitions and a set self-defense scenario. Altering Techniques to suit the form is acceptable.

Read and report on one book related to your martial arts training over the course of this year. Report: Your report must be a brief written essay discussing major ideas in the book, preferably in the frame of personal growth, warrior spirit or the practice of martial arts. For fiction books, please discuss the underlying philosophy of the work. For nonfiction books, please discuss specific ideas that can serve a martial arts student as a tool for development. For biographies, please discuss whether or not the subject would have made a good martial artist, and why. Please turn in your report at least one week prior to your test. Be prepared to discuss, defend and clarify your report during your test.
Write a thesis paper on a martial arts-related subject of your choice. The paper has no minimum or maximum length, but you should include all information you think is relevant. Please include facts or opinions from at least three outside sources: interviews, books, magazines, internet sites, etc. Please turn in your report at least one week prior to your test. Be prepared to discuss, defend and clarify your report during your test.
