STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF A FIVE STOREY HOSPITAL COMPLEX FOR UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN.

By AGAMAH, E. M. Department of Civil Engineering. University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria

1. INTRODUCTION The basis of this project is to select a particular building structure, in this case a hospital complex, and provide a concise analysis and subsequent design of all its structural members in a form that provides for safety, serviceability and economy in relation to First Cost and Maintenance Cost (Hughes, 1976). The project work shall involve obtaining an architectural design for a Five-storey (proposed) hospital complex suitable as a teaching hospital for a university, in this case University of Ilorin. The core of the project shall involve a thorough structural analysis and design of the structure by provision of all specifications for Concrete mix, reinforcement for the structural members and for the roof trusses. 2. AIM AND OBJECTIVES The purpose of design as defined by Rowe et al. is the provision of a structure complying with the clients (and users) requirements (Hughes, 1976), hence for this project, AIM: v. To provide a structure that is safe, economical, stable and aesthetic. OBJECTIVES: I. II. III. IV. V. To prepare the architectural drawings based on initial plan. To prepare the structural grid drawings. To carry out structural analysis manually. To carry out structural design. To carry out structural detailing.

3. LITERATURE REVIEW Limit state design is the most modern and common method for the design of structural members as it improves on other design principles (i.e. Permissible stress method and Load factor method (Mosley, et al, 2007). It is a design method that considers the members in a limit state beyond which it no longer fulfils the relevant design criteria (Wikipedia, 2012). In civil engineering structures, the limit state refers to the degree of loading or other actions on the structure, while the criteria refers to structural integrity, fitness for use, durability, and other design requirements (Wikipedia, 2012). To provide the structural design of any structure, it is fundamentally necessary to carry out an

analysis of its structural members, in order to ascertain their behavior under load and other actions, so that in the process of design, these structural behaviors are adequately accounted for, in order to provide a safe structure for use. The requisite analysis is referred to as Structural Analysis; a thorough analysis of each member shall be provided in this design. Structural analysis and design is a common process in civil engineering as no structure can safely be erected without a complete understanding of its behavior and adequate specifications given for integrity, safety and fitness. Thus design basically encompasses the provision of specifications that would govern the construction process, material to be used and standard of work to be done. Nevertheless design of a concrete structure does not necessarily involve complex theoretical analysis; it is achieved more by deciding on a practical overall layout of the structure, careful attention to detail and sound constructional practice (Mosley, et al 2007). Mosley, et al, stated three (3) fundamental principles which must govern every structural design, there are: a. The stresses and strains are related by the material properties, including the stress-strain curves for concrete and steel. b. The distribution of strains must be compatible with the distorted shape of the cross-section. c. The resultant force developed by the section must balance the applied loads for static equilibrium. These aforementioned principles shall be seen evidently during the course of this project execution as each member in the structure shall be so analyzed and designed. 4. MATERIALS AND METHODS The design process shall be based on manual (i.e. handwritten and/or mental evaluation) analysis and design that shall utilize and clearly depict the use of basic analysis and design theorems and procedures to produce the complete design of the structure. The analysis shall be based on the following methods: Slope deflection Moment distribution Three moments equation Column analogy Kanis method. The design of the building shall be based on: Limit State Design, in line with: British Standard (BS), involving the use of BS 8110 (for reinforced concrete analysis and design) From the foregoing it can be seen that the analysis and design procedures for this project shall involve rigorous research, calculations and thorough design specifications for every structural member (i.e. slabs, beams, columns for each floor starting from the top most floor and finally the foundation). In the process of preparing the analysis and design, several textbooks, manuals and journals shall be used to provide the simplest and most practical design solution for the structure. It should be noted that software (i.e. STAADpro or ORION) shall be used to confirm the analysis and design data obtained. Design data obtained from either one of these softwares shall also be presented in the final project draft. 5. EXPECTED RESULT It is expected that at the end of this project, a comprehensive analysis and design of each structural member is obtained and presented in an articulate and practical manner. The end product of the

project work will be compiled in a technical format that would enable the design to be immediately transferred to the field for implementation. Therefore the design shall make appropriate provisions for reinforcement arrangements for each member, arrangement and composition for steel roof truss, soil test data for foundation design as well as virtual site definition and selection within University of Ilorin Campus using Google Earth. 6. TIME FRAME The following gives an estimate of the expected time frame for the completion of the project: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.
