SLUDGE GENERATION CALCULATION INSTRUCTIONS MICROSOFT EXCEL
This program is designed to calculate an estimated amount of sewage sludge being generated by a wastewater treatment facility. The calculation is a modified version of a calculation taken from the EPA publication titled Improving POTW Performance Using the Composite Correction Approach. This calculation was designed primarily for treatment facilities which have only secondary treatment, although it can be utilized for facilities with both primary and secondary treatment. The following assumptions were made when both primary and secondary treatment are utilized: A 35% BOD removal efficiency for the primary clarifier And The combined waste sludge concentration is 56.4% of the total concentration from the primary and secondary treatment units. (Ex. 50,000 mg/l (primary) + 30,000 mg/l (secondary) = 80,000 mg/l total) ( Waste sludge concentration = 80,000 x 0.564 = 45120 mg/l ) This program calculates the amount of sewage sludge which should be generated by each type of facility. The results are then compared to either the wet tons or dry tons disposed in that given year. There is a +/-15% window for the actual amount generated versus the calculated amount. YELLOW When using this program, only fill in the boxes. 1) Enter the Facility Name starting in the left-most cell. 2) Enter the Permit Number starting in the left-most cell. 3) Enter the Average Daily Flow in million gallons per day.* 4) Enter the Influent BOD in milligrams per liter.* 5) Enter the Effluent BOD in milligrams per liter.* 6) Enter the Digester Capacity in gallons. If more than one digester is present, enter the sum of the capacities. 7) Enter the % solids of the sewage sludge leaving the facility for disposal.* This information is needed to calculate wet tons generated. If both liquid and solid sewage sludge is generated, dry tons will have to be utilized in order to determine whether the actual amount disposed is within 15% of the calculated value. 8) Enter the Monitoring Period in days for the calculation. If the information being used for the calculation is based on 1 year of data then enter 365, 6 months enter 182, 1 month enter 30, etc. 9) Place an X in the box beside the corresponding treatment process in the Wastewater Treatment Process section. If the facility has primary clarification, then Primary Clarification can be selected as well as one other treatment process. 10) Place an X in the box beside the corresponding digestion type in the Digester Information section. 11) Enter either wet tons or dry tons per monitoring period generated by the facility in the Amount of Sludge Reported as Being Generated by the Facility section. Do not enter both. The remaining value should be 0. 12) Enter the type of information that was used to calculate the average daily flow, BODs, digester capacity, and % solids of outgoing sludge, starting in the left-most cell. Example: DMRs, treatment plant operator, etc. 13) Enter which dates were used to generate the information. Example: 1/1/99 TO 12/30/99 14) Enter the name of the person which ran the calculation, starting in the left-most cell. The program will determine whether the amount being reported as being generated by the facility is within the +/- 15% window of the calculated value. This will be indicated by either a YES or a NO. If it is NO, it will explain whether it is above or below the +/- 15% window. * This value can be calculated using averages from the specified time period.
