PERCEIVED ROLE ATTACHMENT AND READINESS FOR RESPONSIBLE PARENTHOOD AMONG TEENAGE MOTHERS IN BARANGAY SUBANGDAKU, MANDAUE CITY:

PROPOSED GUIDELINES TO ENHANCE MOTHERHOOD ROLE

ABSTRACT
General Objectives: The study aimed to determine relationship between readiness for responsible parenthood and role attachment of teenage mothers in Brgy. Subangdaku Mandaue City. Specific Objectives: The study specifically sought to determine the following: 1. profile of the respondents as to age; 2. level of readiness for responsible parenthood of teenage in Barangay Subangdaku Mandaue City; 3. level of perceived role attachment of teenage mothers in Barangay Subangdaku Mandaue City; 4. whether there is a significant relationship between the level of readiness for responsible parenthood and perceived role attachment of teenage mothers in Barangay Subangdaku Mandaue City; 5. formulate an action plan/program to enhance motherhood role based on the result of the study. Null Hypothesis: There is no significant relationship between the perceived role attachment and the level of readiness for responsible parenthood of teenage mothers in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City. MATERIALS AND METHODS Research Design: This study utilized a descriptive correlational research design Research Respondents: The study included 21 teenage mothers ages 13 20 years old who are currently living in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City. Research Instruments: There were two instruments used in the study, namely the Researchermade Readiness for Responsible Parenthood which measures the level of readiness among mothers in assuming a motherhood role, on the other hand, The Role Attachment Questionnaire is used to measure the level of attachment of mothers to their child. Both of the questionnaire has 15-items that was developed to evaluate the readiness of teenage mothers towards motherhood role with the following scale: 5 (always), 4 (often), 3 (sometimes), 2 (rarely), 1 (never). This is scored by summing up individual items for a total score RESULTS TABLE 1 Profile of respondents according to Age n= 21 Age Categories 15-17 18-20 Number of Respondents 4 17 Percentage (%) 19% 81% This table presented that the Pearson r correlation of the Perceived Role Attachment and Readiness for Responsible Parenthood among teenage mothers in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City. The Pearson r value which was 0.799 indicated a strong positive correlation which means that the variables were directly proportional to each other. There was a significant relationship between the Perceived Role Attachment and Readiness for Responsible Parenthood among teenage mothers in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City (p= 0.000). CONCLUSION The Teenage Mothers in Barangay Subangdaku, Mandaue City had a Moderate Level of Perceived Role Attachment and a Moderate Level of Readiness for Responsible Parenthood. Thus, there was a significant moderate positive correlation between the two variables. .

Table 2 revealed that out of the 21 respondents, 14 (67%) had moderate perceived role attachment, 5 (24%) had a high perceived role attachment, and 2(10%) had low perceived role attachment. The data showed a mean score of 46.33 SD (7.84) which was interpreted as moderate level of perceived role attachment. This means that majority of the respondents had moderate level of perception towards being a mother. This implied that some mothers were not able to practice effectively her role to her child throughout their parenthood. The mother was still in need to help in taking care of her child, not only she should apply the knowledge, attitude, and skills learned but they should also develop the air of confidence in performing their duty as a mother. Table 3 revealed that out of the 21 respondents,17(81%) have moderate level of readiness 3(14%) have a high level of readiness, and 1(4%) have low level of readiness. The data showed a mean of 45.24 SD (7.11) which was interpreted as moderate level of readiness for responsible parenthood. This means that majority of the respondents are moderately prepared for the responsibility of being a mother.

Table 1 showed that of the 21 respondents, 17(81%) belong to the 18-20 year old age group, 4 (19%) are from ages 15-17.
