Background of the Study Food is any substance that is either eaten or drunk for nutrition or pleasure.

Brain is the center of the nervous system which function is to exert centralized control over the other organs of the body. Making healthy choices of food will optimize every students mental performance. Medical evidences show that what you feed your body directly affects your brain. Having a good study corner, comfortable chair, clutter-free desk and enough lightning are essential in studying effectively. But for some students theyre facing a difficult time to deal with their studies because of their environment and also their health. Thus, picking good brain enhancing foods help students with their studies and make mind become sharper. Nowadays, there are a lot of highly effective brain foods that improve memory, mood and concentration. These foods merely maximize the memory function of each individual. Like blueberries, regular blueberry consumption has been shown to improve memory function; blueberries are also rich in antioxidants that protect cells against the effect of free radicals which may play a role in heart disease and cancer. Salmon helps the brain develop tissue for increasing the brain power. Similarly, coffee that keeps the brain moderate because of its content called caffeine. The most common are peanuts, walnuts and pecans that help from fighting insomnia and strengthening the memory. Egg especially its egg yolk is rich in choline which is a significant nutrient in improving memory function. Dark chocolate is rich in antioxidant and it improves focus and concentration. Milk chocolate, on the other hand, improves memory and reaction time. Avocado is also a brain food, the fat content of it, which is a healthy fat, regulates the blood flow in the whole body, keeping the mind functioning. (Mark Twain 1910) Part of the secret of success in life is to eat what you like and let the food fight it out inside. This study does not limit students with what do they like to eat. The study aims to know the relevance of foods for the brain in passing the departmental examination. Moreover, the study tends to give students an advice when the time comes that they experience difficulties in their studies.

In final consideration, most students had all those times when they just cant seem to concentrate. And while theres nothing to get back to the momentum, there are some foods that have been shown to improve brain function and encourage focus and clarity. Statement of the Problem: Specifically, the researchers aim to answer the following questions: 1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents according to: a. Name b. Age c. Gender 2. What is the relevance of brain food in passing the departmental exam of the respondents in terms of: a. Kind b. Amount c. Calorie content 3. Is there a significant relationship in the performance of the respondents in the departmental exam when they are grouped according to name, age, gender? 4. Is there a significant difference of brain food eaters and non-brain food eaters in their performance in the departmental exam? Statement of Hypotheses: 1. There is no significant relationship in the performance of the respondents in the departmental exam when they are grouped according to name, age, gender 2. There is no significant difference of brain food eaters and non-brain food eaters in their performance in the departmental exam

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY Food choices not only influence a persons weight, they also have an impact on brain function. The brain requires nutrients just like your heart, lungs or muscles do. There are a few important relationships between nutrients and brain health that are worth exploring. The purpose of this paper is to study concerning foods and its relationship to brain function specifically in passing the departmental exam for 2nd year BSA students in University of the East, Manila. Studies have shown that proper nutrition has a direct effect on student performance and behavior in school. This study is significant for us students for this was to find out the healthy foods that increase brain activity. This study can be a learning paradigm not only for BSA students but also in other fields for it helps the students to improve their academic performance specially in passing their examinations through eating the right food. The proposed study will help teachers to have a deeper understanding of the effects of the food to the performance of their students. By this study they will come up with a powerful program. The proposed study will benefits and help the future researcher as their guide. The study can also open in development of this study. In order to show that healthy foods are better for the mind, this study will be collecting qualitative data on brain function after receiving healthy food and unhealthy food. Survey data will be collected from 2nd year BSA students to determine if there was a relationship between food for the brain and passing the departmental exam.
