Listening Process

LISTENING
By definition, it is the act of mindfully hearing and attempting to comprehend the meaning of words spoken by another in a conversation or speech. Activity listening is an important business communication skill, and it can involve making sounds that indicate attentiveness, as well as the listener giving feedback in the form of a paraphrased rendition of what has been said by the other party for their confirmation. Listening is one of the most important skills you can have. How well you listen has a major impact on your job effectiveness, and on the quality of your relationships with others. We listen to obtain information.

We listen to understand. We listen for enjoyment. We listen to learn.

Difference Between Hearing and Listening


Hearing is merely the ability of ear to sense sounds around one, but, listening is more of conscious effort to interpret the sounds, requiring concentration of mind.

PROCESS OF LISTENING

WHY LISTEN ?
INTRODUCTION ON WHY, WHEN AND HOW PEOPLE LISTEN People have multitude of reasons on listening, these reasons just differ on the communicative event they are into, some examples of this is, a student wants to enroll in a certain school he/she wants, so he/she then inquires about the requirements of the certain school, he/she then listens to the directions and instruction given to him/her. Here are the major reasons on why, when and how people listen. To be involved in many social events or occasions It is a fact that man is a social being, so man needs to deal, interact and relate with other people, and engage in different communicative events. Just like when your teacher tells you to report certain topics about certain subjects, you then deal with people, when you are trying to grasp informations about the certain subject, then you are already trying to interact to people and relating to each others ideas, and lastly you are about to report the subject matter. To get information People listens for information to get, learn or even increase ideas about a thing, a person, an event or phenomena. A good example is a crime investigator, because an investigator usually investigates a certain crime, but before doing this he needs to get some information about a thing, about the ones who are the witnesses, and how did an event possibly happened, that could solve a certain crime.

To respond to "controls" and feelings Controls in this sense refers to the directions and instructions that are given to us by a person in school, in a workplace, and elsewhere. Person listen in order to follow directions and instructions, so that he/she can do as directed. In addition, we listen in order to understand what a person feels, and we do this by means of empathy, we empathize to others means to feel what they feel. *To enjoy and to be entertained People wants to share a good laugh and exchange pleasure as for some examples like your friend tries to tells you a joke, and you give your friend a laughing reaction about the joke, you then exchange pleasures with each other.

TYPES OF LISTENING
Major reasons that was mentioned a while ago which lead us to the different types of listening, can be determined through how one pays attention to the one what was said. Passive Listening This type of hearing is just the same as hearing, it is the process of receiving sounds through the sound waves. In this type of listening, the listener simply listens to the sounds that he/she hears, but does not value or does not give importance about it. Active or Attentive listening This type of listening happens when one tries to understand, remember and acts on it intelligently. Active listening is mostly used when one listens to directions, instructions, lessons or discussions.

Critical listening In this third type of listening, the listener tries to think whether the information will be accepted/rejected by determining its worth or making a judgment about it. Appreciative Listening In this type of listening, the listener hears the sound with pleasure or enjoyment, it can be determined by its tempo, tune or rhythm of the sound heard.
