B. Recall Class what have we discussed Last meeting weve discussed about last meeting? the natural hazards. Yes, thats right! What are those natural hazards? The natural hazards are Earthquakes, Flood, Volcanic Eruption and El Nio. Very Good! C. Motivation I have here two pictures of Ilog Pasig before and after. How would you compare the two? The pictures show how our Ilog Pasig has changed as time goes by. Yes! And what are those changes? A lot of houses were built alongside. Garbage is thrown in the river and became polluted.

Thats right! What do you think are the reasons why our Ilog Pasig became polluted?

I think its because of human activities such as throwing their trash anywhere. Yes, Very good! Based on the pictures, what do you think is our topic for today?

I think our topic is all about human activities that can cause destruction in our environment.

Lesson Proper A. Discussion

Yes! Thats right! So we can say that

Today we will be discussing three common man-made hazards that cause destruction in our environment. Before we proceed to our discussion well have first a group activity. I will be dividing the class into five groups. Each group will be given a model of different man-made hazards for you to simulate. Theres an instruction for you to follow which is indicated in each model. Class will you please move your chairs on the side This will be the group ones table; this will be the group twos table and so on so forth. I will give you 10 minutes to do the activity. Before we start anyone from the group please read the instruction aloud. Group 1: Greenhouse effect Set-up A: Earth inside the glasshouse Set-up B: Earth without glasshouse Turn on the light. Observe what happens to the temperature of both set-ups for every five minutes. Group 2: Soil Erosion Set-up A: Mountain with trees. Set-up B: Mountain without trees. Pour slowly the water into set-up A and B. Observe what happens after pouring the water. Group 3: Oil Spill with Cotton balls as oil remover. Pour the oil into the basin with water. Observe what happens. Try removing the oil from the water using the cotton balls. Observe. Group 4: Oil Spill with Gauze as oil remover. Pour the oil into the basin with water. Observe what happens. Try removing the oil from the water using the gauze. Observe.

Group 5: Oil Spill with Hair as oil remover. Pour the oil into the basin with water. Observe what happens. Try removing the oil from the water using the hairs. Thank you for that. Do you have any Observe. questions? Very good! If thats the case you may now None maam! proceed with your activity. Remember to work with your group quietly. If you have any questions just raise your hand and I will go to your group. (after 10 minutes) I want you to choose one representative per group to share to the class your observations. Lets have first group 1 Our group have noticed that the temperature inside the glasshouse increases while the temperature in set-up with no glasshouse remains the Yes, thats right! Class their model shows same. how greenhouse effect occurs in our planet. Greenhouse effect happens when gases in the earths atmosphere trap the heat from the sun when it is reflected back from the earth. Greenhouse gases such as Carbon Dioxide and Methane causes this phenomena. Where this carbon dioxide does came from? Carbon dioxide came from burning of fossil fuels in cars, power plants and industry. the

What about methane?

Methane is released during Yes, thats right! It may also come from processing of fossil fuels. natural sources like fart of cows.

If you were inside that glass house, what would you feel? I might suffer from heat stroke of the continuously Yes! Thats right! We might also experience because increasing temperature inside. climate change. Lets have now group 2 We observed that the soil in set-up B which is the mountain without trees Yes! Exactly. Class their model shows how was easily carried off by the water we just poured. erosion happens in our mountains. Soil erosion is the carrying off of soil by water or wind. Soil erosion is usually caused by deforestation. The function of the roots of the trees which is to hold the soil and absorb the water from heavy rainfall was blocked since they are all cut down. Effects of soil erosion can be landslides, mudflow and flash flood. Lets have now group 3 Our group have observed that the oil we poured settled on the surface of the water. We tried to use the cotton balls to remove the oil. It was good but the cotton balls were easily destroyed.

Yes, very good! Their model shows how oil spill affects our bodies of water. Oil spill is the release of oil into the ocean or coastal waters due to human activity. The usual cause of this event is the crude oil from tankers, spill of petroleum products such as gasoline and diesel. The effect of this oil spill is it kills the life that inhabits in water-based ecosystems. People can get diseases by eating seafood that has been poisoned.

Lets have now group 4 Our group noticed also that the oil poured settled on the surface of the water. We also tried to remove the oil using the gauze provided. We observed that it is effective in removing the oil but the gauze is not that durable like the cotton balls.

Yes! Very good. Same with group 3, their model is also about oil spill. They tried to use the gauze to see if it would be a great medium in removing the oil. Lets hear the observation of the group 5 to see which material would be the best to use in removing the oil.

Our group tried using the hairs in removing the oil in the surface of the water; we noticed that the air is very suitable in removing it. It is very durable and easy to use. Yes! Very well said! Our hair is a great material to use in removing oil spills because of its ability to adsorb the oil. Remember in Guimaras Oil Spill, they make use of chicken feathers and human hair sacks tied to bamboo poles in order to prevent the oil from spreading more in the water. B. Valuing After knowing the common man-made hazards, as a student, what ways would you suggest to minimize the effects of these hazards? As a student, I can help minimizing the effects of those hazards simply by being responsible with our own doings, plantingtrees, not burning our trash and participating on the different campaigns and projects that our government is putting up.

Very well said. C. Summary

So class, what are the things that weve discussed today?

Today weve discussed about the three common man-made hazards. The greenhouse effect occurs when the heat from the sun is trapped inside the earths atmosphere because of the greenhouse gases. Oil spill occurs when due to human activity releases oil into the ocean of marine waters. Soil erosion occurs when the soil is carried off by water or wind. We could help in minimizing the effects of those hazards by being responsible enough for our own doings, planting more trees, and being aware of the dangers that we could get on our activities that causes destruction in our Very well said. I hope you learned a lot environment. today. V. Evaluation
