ABB ACS 600 DC bus overvoltage Aug 28, 2004 12:09 pm, by Yogesh Subject : Engineering from the

Maintenance dept. Text : Dear all, we have ABB ACS 600 model inverter for speed testing machine. It is giving DC bus overvoltage fault continuously inspite we set deceleration time to substantially high level. Any reason and remedies ? Regards, Yogesh Aug 30, 2004 4:56 pm, by Calvin Smith The problem is regeneration current. You need a braking resistor to absorb the current. The size will depend on how much current is feeding back to the drive. Get the ABB rep. to help you size the resistor. That will take care of the problem. hope this helps Calvin Smith smithgsk@netscape.net Aug 30, 2004 4:58 pm, by Matthew Hyatt If this is not a European application, there is a bus modification which must be made, you should contact ABB about the problem immediately. Does it only do it under decelleration (although you did extend the decel time), only when the motor is running or any time the drive is on? -Steve Myres, PE Automation Solutions Aug 31, 2004 12:41 pm, by Todor I have gotten the feeling that this is the Line back reflecting wave problem. In this case we have a Source with impeadance, Power Line - PL, and the Load - ACS. Let me remind you that we have a wave moving to the Load impedance, reflecting back and forward. When we have step impulse disturbance as return energy or simple disconection of the

load, there we have a moving back wave (DC/AC) which is sensed by the (fast Analog) OverVolage protection of the Great! ABB Design. Recomended directions: 1. Check the overload capacity of the source, and Most Important - the LINE parameters (S21 line parameter)!!! We are talking here for 100 times the Load. A motor load deviation is Practically 100 time the Nominal Power! My experience went with the Line capacity first. 2. Source (S11, S21) parameters are drastically decreased by the number of Transformers + + +... plus measures for "increasing (compensations) the quality of the Source". 3. Do not touch the ABB System! Re: ABB ACS 600 DC bus overvoltage Aug 31, 2004 1:03 pm, by Bob Peterson I would guess that the system has stored energy being regenerated back into the drive when you try to slow down the load. Probably you will need to either regen back to the line or add a brake module. Re: ABB ACS 600 DC bus overvoltage Sep 10, 2004 10:18 pm, by Yogesh Hi, thanks for overwhelming response... I got it finally. There is parameter called "overvoltage controller" and options were either On or Off. When I reviewed that it was kept on OFF setting. After making it functional ie ON. Fault went away. This is for information to all in future programming. Regards, Yogesh
