CASHIER

Casual restaurants and diners are set up with a cashier near the entrance, where customers bring their bill for payment at a cash register. In these restaurants, the cashier is the last point of contact for the customer, so good service and a cheerful, pleasant demeanor are important. This job requires little training and skill and often has a high turnover.

Job Duties As a customer service professional, the cashier asks the patron if the meal was acceptable and assists with any last-minute service issues. The cashier at a restaurant takes the bill from a customer, rings it up on the cash register and accepts payment. She processes credit cards, takes cash and makes change. Cashiers are responsible for the money in the cash register and must account for it at the end of their shift. Cashiers often act as hostesses and show patrons to their tables, especially during busy times. They also complete some chores such as wiping off menus and are expected to keep their working area neat and tidy. Cases of pies and cakes may be displayed at the cashier's counter at some restaurants. Cashiers in these establishments may encourage patrons to purchase desserts to take home, package the desserts and keep the cases stocked and clean.

Training Cashiers receive training on the job. Little or no education is required for this position. It is often filled by young people or those looking for easy, low-skill work. New employees attend brief company training or watch new employee videos. They learn the basics of the job from a more seasoned employee or are trained by the restaurant manager.

Special Qualifications Basic math skills are important in this job to make correct change. A positive attitude is necessary to provide good customer service. Some cashiers may be required to obtain a food handler's permit if they will be packaging desserts or assisting waiters during busy times.
