In connection to increasing construction of establishments such as malls in Davao City job opportunities for sales ladies increases, this study explores the risk of such employees in acquiring low back pain due to prolonged standing in their type of work. According to the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety, working in standing position on a regular basis can cause sore feet, swelling of the legs, varicose veins, general muscular fatigue, low back pain, stiffness in the neck and shoulder, and other health problems. Furthermore, Low back pain can interferes with work, routine daily activities, or recreation. Americans spend at least $50 billion each year on low back pain, the most common cause of job-related disability and a leading contributor to missed work. The participants for this study are sales ladies in department stores that are exposed to more than two continuous hours of standing. The qualified participants will then be briefed about the nature and the purpose of the study as well as the tool to be used. Second, they will proceed with answering the tool which is a standardized questionnaire composed of a general questionnaire for further surveying and specifics ones focused on the lumbosacral area with a severity scale. The main purposes of the questionnaires are to serve as instruments (1) screening of low back pain in an ergonomics context, and (2) for occupational healthcare service. The questionnaires are not meant to provide basis for clinical diagnosis rather as a diagnostic tool. The entire procedure will take less than 5 minutes per participant. No compensation will be given as a return for participating in this study. On the other hand several benefits await whoever will be part of the research respondent pool. First, the participants will be more aware of their health and watch out for any development of low back pain. In addition, they could prevent absenteeism from work and focus more on job improvement and promotion. Second, the result of the study will provide the management an update regarding employees current health status as well as recommendations to elevate the efficiency of their employees performance by providing more focus on low back pain risks that ensues them on their job. Furthermore, sick leaves by employees will be reduced and productivity of the department will increase. Also, the management and the participants will be entitled to acquire a copy of the whole research results once the study has been approved for publishing by the schools assigned committee. Participation on this study will uphold the value of volunteerism and confidentiality. No coercion will be tolerated and any participant will be given the right to withdraw anytime within the duration of the study. All the data collected will be treated confidential and the identity of participants will be treated confidential and the identity of participants will be treated confidential and the identity of participations will be kept hidden by using codes instead of their actual names. Access to the collected data will be limited to the investigators alone. Hard copies will be kept for the duration of three years for the purpose of reviews and clarifications. Upon due, these materials will be burned or shredded in order to protect the identity of the participants. Soft copies will be kept on a separate drive. Photo documentation may be conducted for the purpose of filing and reference.
