Scanner General Care

The ZScanner 800 contains optical precision parts and must be handled with care to avoid damage to the components or the calibration system. For transportation, the system must be placed in the carry-on case provided with the kit. The system must be stored in a dry, dust-free place and kept at room temperature. The scanner must be kept on its support or in its carrying case when not used.

ZScan Manual Clean the interference filters with a clean and dry cloth. The ideal is a lens or glasses cleaning-cloth. Never open any of the systems components. By doing so, the user may inadvertently damage the system and the ZScanner 800 will have to be recalibrated. Only ZCorp staff or authorized technicians are qualified to work on the scanner. No maintenance is required by the end user. If the system shows any troubles or malfunctions, it must be sent back to ZCorp or to an authorized reseller. Unauthorized manipulations on the scanner will void the warranty.

Software Presentation
Positioning Features
In order to position itself in space, the ZScanner 800 creates a positioning model from the positioning targets. At all times, the scanner needs to be able to see at least 4 positioning features. These features are the positioning targets that were placed either on or around the object before scanning. There are two different ways to acquire these targets: either by using the Scan Features mode or by detecting features interactively in the Scan Surface mode. The former enables the acquisition of the targets only, while the latter concurrently acquires the targets and the surface of the object. The resulting model, whether it has been acquired in Scan Surface or Scan Features mode, can then be exported for later use. During scanning, if a target is detected more than once, the ZScanner 800 will update the position of the target with the new detected position, therefore increasing the precision of the positioning model during the scan. The user can also choose to activate or deactivate the use of a positioning feature in the positioning model in order to exclude that target from the calculation of the sensor's position or orientation.

References
To represent the space in which the object is positioned, the scanner needs a 3D coordinate system. By default, 3D data is represented in the "Sensor Reference Frame", whose origin is set to be the scanner's position when the user starts to scan.

ZScan User Guide The user can change the coordinates system either automatically with the autodetected reference model, or manually by creating another reference with the Add Reference tool. This wizard allows the creation of references from existing features in the scan. Each reference available in the selected scan can be renamed, deleted or set to be used as the origin of a new reference frame. Exported features or facets will then be located in that reference frame.

Surface and Volume

Scanning with the ZScanner 800 takes place in a virtual cube called Scanning Volume, which is represented by a bounding box on the screen. In order to be represented, the object has to be located in that volume. It is possible to adjust the size and position of that volume through the Surface view. It is also possible to set the resolution of the volume in order to match the level of detail needed on the object scanned.

Facets, Edition and Multi-resolution

Facets represent the final output of the scanner which is structured as a continuous mesh of triangles. Contrary to many scanners, the ZScanner 800 does not rely on a point cloud that is later triangulated but generates directly a surface. Prior to generating the final result, it is possible to edit the scan inside ZScan. However, ZScan being mainly an acquisition software, the editing tools are not meant to replace those offered in post-processing software, but are rather aimed to improve the facets to produce a cleaner result. The software allows to remove facets and to increase or decrease resolution on selected parts of the object. For example, the user may want to get a higher resolution on a specific detail on the surface to see its edges more cleanly, or remove triangles belonging to the background. Those deleted facets are transferred into the Recycle Bin and can always be restored later.

ZScan Manual The final file may be saved as a .STL file, which is a standard file used by most postprocessing software.

File Types
ZScan uses different file types to store the result of its actions. .CLF .CST License file that makes ZScan functional. A specific license is needed for each ZScanner 800. Configuration file that contains data specific to each ZScanner 800. The file contains calibration parameters and information needed to create a new session Session file containing all the data related to a session, such as the scans, the resolution parameters, the deleted facets, etc. File format used to export facets. Text file used when exporting the positioning model containing all positioning targets. File produced by AICON 3D Systems software that can be used to import a positioning model acquired by photogrammetry.

.CSF .STL .TXT .OBC

General Considerations
ZScan is a software that takes advantage of modern computer architecture. Almost all operations are multi-threaded to take advantage of the dual-core processors in the computers. Due to constraints in Windows, there is a limit to the amount of memory that can be allocated to a single program. That limit is set to 1.4 Go in Windows XP and to 1.6 Go in Windows Vista 32 bits. In Vista 64 bits, the limit is function to the total amount of memory available in the computer. For a computer with 4 Go of RAM, the limit is set to 3.7 Go. If you go past these limits, ZScan will display an error message prompting you to reduce the resolution or to increase the volume. It is important to note that the data in the session is not lost. It will reappear when the volume is changed back to a more reasonable setting. It is also possible (and recommended!) to save the session at that point.

Getting Started
Software installation
If the computer was purchased from ZCorp with the ZScanner 800 scanner, the software is already installed. Follow these instructions only to install the software on another computer. First of all, verify that the computer meets all requirements. Note that Administrators privileges are required to complete the installation correctly. Insert the ZScan CD-ROM in the drive to launch the installation process. If the installation does not start automatically, you can browse to the contents of the CD and double-click on Setup.exe to launch the Installation application manually. The setup process will then be launched as depicted in the following steps.

Click on Next > to proceed with the installation procedure.

ZScan Manual

The user will be prompted to enter his name and the organization for which the software is installed. It is recommended to install the software for all users, so everyone on the machine has access to the software. When all these fields are correctly filled, click on Next > to continue.

10

ZScan User Guide

The user is then asked to select the components to install along with ZScan. By default, the files for ZScan and the relevant sensor are selected. Also, if versions of Geomagic are installed, the plugins for this software will be installed. It is possible to select not to install one of those components by clicking on the icon next to its name. However, apart from the Geomagic plugins, all those components are mandatory.

11

ZScan Manual

Once the fields are set correctly, it is possible to launch the installation process by clicking on Install. ZScan will try to install drivers for the scanner and you may receive a warning message. Please accept the driver installation to complete the installation procedure correctly. Once the installation procedure is complete, the user has the option to launch the Sensor Manager. This tool allows to quickly import the configuration and license files. Every ZScanner 800 sensor has its own configuration file containing the calibration parameters. It has also its own license file which is required to use the device with the ZScan application. This tool is also accessible through the main ZScan interface and is explained in details later in this manual. ZScan is now correctly installed. It is possible to launch the application by double-clicking on the icon located on the desktop or by navigating in the Windows Start Menu.

Connecting the scanner

Once the software is correctly installed, the scanner may be connected to the computer. The following steps show you how to connect and store your ZScanner 800. Also make sure that the working environment is clutter-free and that the cables are safely placed. When in use, it should always be placed safely on its stand in order to prevent accidents to the scanner. When not in use, the scanner should always be stored in its case to avoid accidents and decalibration.

12

ZScan User Guide First, plug the PCMCIA card in the slot in the dedicated slot on the computer. Make sure to plug the power supply cable and the FireWire cable in the card as shown in the figure below. Depending on the type of FireWire cable which is included with your scanner, the connections will be either of the two possibilities depicted in the figure below. According to your type of FireWire cable, the power supply will either be plugged in directly in the cable or in the PCMCIA card itself.

The other end of the power supply cable must be plugged into a power outlet, and the other end of the FireWire cable must be plugged into the ZScanner 800. The scanner is now correctly connected and is ready to use. Place the scanner safely on its stand between manipulations.

Starting ZScan for the first time

After the scanner is correctly connected, you are ready to launch ZScan by clicking on the icon that was created on your desktop or via Start Menu > Programs > ZScan > Start ZScan. Your system is now ready for the acquisition. You can hit the Record Scan button to start scanning. However, it is highly recommended to read this guide in full in order to learn how ZScan operates.

ZScan Manual

ZScan
General Interface

When opening ZScan, the user first sees the main interface shown above. It is subdivided in 5 main parts: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Menu Toolbar Scan Tree Expanding Panels 3D Viewer

The Menu and the Toolbar are complementary to each other. The toolbar offers the main functions to the user, while some more advanced functions are located only in the menu. Each of these functions will be described and located later. The Scan Tree allows the user to select the mode under which the software operates. By default, the scan mode is selected, in which the user is shown the surface and the positioning targets. The other modes available are features, reference, surface, facets and recycle bin modes. By selecting the corresponding scan tree node, the functions relevant to the current context are displayed to the user. These functions will be described and located further on in this chapter.

14

ZScan User Guide The Expanding Panels are used to convey relevant information to the user about the current situation of the scan and to propose advanced functions to the user where applicable. The displayed panels once again depend on the mode chosen in the scan tree. The 3D Viewer presents the result of the scan in real-time. Depending on the node selected in the scan tree, the viewer can display the positioning features, the surface or the facets.

Status Bar
The Status Bar located at the bottom of the screen displays different values concerning the current state of the software. The figure below illustrates the different information that can be displayed in the status bar.

The current status of the scanner can take 3 different values: Ready: The scanner is ready to start the acquisition process. Recording: The scanner is currently in the acquisition process. Press the trigger to acquire data. Disabled: The software is currently doing computation and is unable to acquire any data.

The number of images acquired in the current scan is reset each time the user hits the Record Scan button. The frame rate is displayed at the extreme right of the screen and should typically be around 15 frames per second. When in the surface and editing modes, the status bar also displays the current 3D viewer controls available to the user. These depend on the mouse mode defined in the options and detailed later in this manual.

Main Interface Description

3D Viewer controls
The 3D Viewer is the part of the ZScan interface where the 3D model is located. Interaction with the 3D model is made through mouse actions in that part of the window. The default mouse movements are summarized in the table below. Depending on the current mode selected in the software, the mouse buttons will have different actions.

3D Viewer contextual menu

In all modes, a right click in the 3D Viewer will open a contextual menu with relevant functions for the user. Once again, the contents of this menu depends on the current mode of the scan tree. At all times, the following three functions will be available.

Reset Viewpoint will move the viewpoint back to its original position. It is a quick way to get the whole piece in the 3D Viewer when zoomed on a detail or somehow lost the model from the current view. Lock Zoom allows the user to set the level of zoom on the piece and still allow the viewer to follow the movements of the scanner during the scan. This function is useful when scanning on small details on a part. The default value is unchecked. Lock Viewpoint allows the user to lock the viewer in its current position. From that moment, it will no longer move automatically when scanning. However, you can zoom and rotate at will and the viewer will remain static while the acquisition is in progress. This can be useful when trying to acquire data on small details on a part. The default value is unchecked. Show Volume Bounding Box controls the display of the volume bounding box. If unchecked, the bounding box will no longer be displayed. In its default position, the bounding box will be shown. Change Display Colors gives the user the choice of the colors used in the 3D Viewer as it is shown in the following figure. Change will prompt the user to select a new color and Restore will revert the color to the one used before opening the dialog. The Default button will revert the colors to their factory value. ZScan 2.0 offers to parameter all possible colors in the 3D Viewer, so you can customize the scanning experience to your needs.

17

ZScan Manual

Different functions can also appear in that menu, depending on the mode under which the software is currently operating. In Facets mode, the user can choose to display either the facets or the Wireframe. In Facets mode, it is possible to enable a quick rendering of the facets. This will improve performance on a slower machine and with a large model. If the Edit Facets mode is activated, the editing tools will be available in the contextual menu. These tools will be described in the Selection Mode section.

General Functions
These functions form the base of ZScan, which consist of scan operations and file operations. It is important to note that most functions in ZScan will appear in both the toolbar and the menu, so they are easy to find. The functions listed below are available regardless of the selection made in the Scan Tree.

When selecting the Positioning Features mode in the Scan Tree, the following functions become available. All of these functions allow the user to interact with the positioning model used by the ZScanner 800. When expanded, this mode contains all the positioning features in the current model. Each target can be selected, activated, deactivated or deleted. When a feature is selected in the Scan Tree, it will turn yellow in the 3D viewer. It is possible to select multiple features in the scan tree by using Ctrl (for non-consecutive features) or Shift (for consecutive features).

Features Mode Expanding Panels

Two expanding panels are available when the Positioning Features mode is selected in the Scan Tree. The Positioning Features Details panel gives information about the total number of features in the current scan and the number of currently observed features. The Positioning Features Parameters contains two parameters available to the user: the Feature Type and the Optimize Positioning Model algorithm. The Feature Type allows the user to choose between the type of positioning feature currently in use. The default value is the type of features that was shipped with the scanner, but it can be changed to work with other positioning features by ZCorp Please note that only ZScanner features can be used with the scanner. Contact your reseller for more information about the different choices in positioning features. The Optimize Positioning Model algorithm will consider all of the observations of the positioning targets and optimize their position. This will allow a better precision in the resulting positioning model, hence increasing the accuracy of the scanned surface.

20

ZScan User Guide

Please note that the Optimize Positioning Model function will be unavailable after one of the following actions have been taken: A positioning feature is deleted The positioning model is loaded with the Open Features function The Optimize Features has already been launched once

Reference Mode
The ZScanner 800 is self-positioning and must find its position in space by itself; to do so, it must determine an origin for each scan. The scanner will use the first detected position to fix the coordinates system. When the first targets are detected, the scanner uses its internal position to define the system with "X pointing down (red), "Y pointing at its left (green) and "Z moving away from the scanner (blue). Even if this positioning method works perfectly in the ZScanner 800 world, it is often very practical to be able to use another reference, or simply add one. For example, a user may want to scan in a pre-defined positioning system to avoid having to align the scan afterward in a third party qualification software for comparison purposes. It may also be very useful in the case where multiple scans need to be positioned together. When expanded, this mode will show all the references available in the current scan. Each of them can be renamed and set as the origin of the current scan. While in Reference mode, the 3D Viewer shows the references and the facets. The current origin is labeled (Origin) in the scan tree.

Reference Mode Functions

Toolbar Icon Location Edit | Add Reference Action Starts the Add Reference wizard.

Surface Mode
When selected, the surface is displayed in the 3D Viewer. The surface is a representation of the object being scanned from a specific viewpoint. It is important to note that this is not the final result of the scan, but rather a quick visualization in order

21

ZScan Manual to set the surface settings and to visualize the result during the acquisition process. Since ZScan 2.0, the rendering of the surface has been redone and improved for more performance and better looks. When this mode is activated, the surface functions are activated in the toolbar. These functions are summarized in the table below.

Surface Mode Functions

Toolbar Icon Menu Edit | Move Volume Action Move the surface volume bounding box while the object remains stationary. The controls used for moving the volume are the same as the ones used in the 3D viewer. Translate the bounding box automatically to the center of the object. This function does not rotate the bounding box to fit the object better. Center and rotate the bounding box around the scan and resize it to the smallest possible value that will include all laser curves already acquired, regardless of whether they are inside the current volume or not or if the facets have already been deleted.

Surface Mode Expanding Panels

When in surface mode, two expanding panels are available to the user. They contain information about the surface that is in the 3D Viewer as well as additional functions. The first expanding panel is the Surface Details panel. It displays a summary of the surface reconstruction settings, such as the volume size and the resolution. This expanding panel is only explicative. The second expanding panel is the Surface Parameters panel. It allows the user to adjust surface reconstruction settings according to his needs, such as the volume size. The Fit Volume and Center Volume functions are also available via this expanding panel. Note that the volume size affects directly the resolution of the scan. A temporary volume bounding box is created in the 3D viewer when these parameters are changed, and the changes are applied only

22

ZScan User Guide when the Apply or Optimize surface button is clicked on. That way, the surface reconstruction algorithm is launched only once, saving a considerable amount of time. It is also possible to specify a position and an angle for the volume bounding box by editing the fields Position and Angle. In the position fields, X, Y and Z represent translation along their respective axis. In the angle fields, the value represents a rotation around the X,Y and Z axis respectively. The Optimize surface functionality uses the neighboring laser curves and looks for inconsistent data to try to remove it. As it is an iterative process, the calculation will go on until the user decides to stop or until no further improvement is possible. The surface will then be rebuilt with the new parameters. This function has be reviewed and improved in ZScan 2.0.

Higher resolution does not necessarily means better results. Plane surfaces could end up noisier, as more unwanted imperfections could be caught.

Facets Mode
When the Facets mode is selected in the Scan Tree, the 3D Viewer will show the final result of the scan. The facets are structured as a STL file, which can later be exported. Moreover, the Facet Editing toolbar and the Facet Details and Facet Parameters expanding panels become available. Even though ZScan is mainly an acquisition software, it features some mesh edition functions, which are summarized in the table below.

Facets Mode Functions

Some of the functions presented here can only be executed in Edition mode. This mode can be activated by clicking on the Edit Facets button on the toolbar or with the Edit | Edit Scan menu. When this mode is activated, the selection tools become available in order to select which facets to edit. Please refer to the Selection Mode section to learn more about the selection tools. Toolbar Icon Menu File | Save Facets Action Save the facets in STL format.

Be careful when using the Delete Facets functions. Facets will be IRREVERSIBLY DELETED. When in doubt, use the Send facets to Recycle Bin function.

Facets Mode Expanding Panels

There are two expanding panels in Facets mode: Facets details and Facets Parameters. The Facets Details Expanding panel gives the user information such as the number of triangles and vertices in the current scan. This expanding panel is informative only. The Facets Parameters contains 4 important parameters for facets rendering. Fill Positioning Features: This check box controls whether the detected positioning features are filled or not in the facets. Spike Filter: This filter attempts to find the vertices that are too far from the neighborhood vertices, hence creating a spike in the surface. The filter will then move that point towards the facets,

24

ZScan User Guide respecting the normal orientation of the facets, which will smooth the spike while retaining the shape of the acquired data. This function has been reviewed and improved in ZScan 2.0. Remove Isolated Patches: This filter makes it possible to remove automatically small patches which are not connected with the main object. For example, this filter would be useful to automatically remove a part from the table behind the object that was acquired accidentally. It is possible to protect patches from this filter with the Protect Patches from Removal tool. Activating this tool will allow the user to select triangles in the 3D Viewer which won't be affected by the Remove Isolated Patches filter.

Selection Mode
The Selection mode in ZScan is available mostly in the Facets Edition mode. However, some of the selection tools are also available when in Reference Mode. These tools are useful to select certain parts of the 3D model in order to edit parts selectively. Selected facets will be displayed in yellow in the 3D Viewer.

The 3D Viewer controls revert to the original settings described in 3D Viewer Controls section. This can also be achieved by holding the CTRL key. When this setting is activated, only the triangles visible from the current viewpoint will be selected. When this setting is activated, all the triangles within the selection area will be selected, even those hidden behind another layer of the surface. Clear the current selection. This can also be activated with Shift+C.

Recycle Bin
When selected, the Recycle Bin mode expands to show all the deleted facets patches for the current scan. Two actions are available to the facets currently in the Recycle Bin when right-clicking on the facets in the scan tree: 1. They can be restored to the original scan with the Restore Facets function. 2. They can be permanently deleted with the Delete Facets function. It is also important to note that the Isolated Facets cannot be restored via the recycle bin. To restore those facets, the user must adjust the corresponding slider in the Facets Parameters expanding panel.

Be careful when using the Delete Facets functions. Facets will be IRREVERSIBLY DELETED. When in doubt, leave the facets in the Recycle Bin.

Recycle Bin Expanding Panels

When the Recycle Bin mode is selected, the Recycle Bin Details expanding panel is visible. This panel indicates the number of deleted facets sections in the current scan. When the Deleted facets mode is selected in the Scan Tree, the Deleted Facets Details expanding panel will show the number of triangles contained in that specific section.

3 Positioning Targets 3 References

Create a reference by specifying the position of three targets. Create a reference with 3 other pre-defined references

In each case, the process is identical: the user has to click on the required features in the 3D Viewer and define their properties. For example, when using the 3 Planes method, the user first selects a plane and must then determine if that plane is the X, Y or Z plane. In the case of 3 Positioning Targets, the user must input the position of the target currently selected. In the last step, the user has the option to rotate or to translate the generated reference. The result is updated in real time in the 3D Viewer.

The units used in the Add Reference Wizard are the units defined in ZScan. It defaults to millimeters and can be changed in Configure | Options.

Sensor Calibration
Even under normal use, the ZScanner 800 may need to have its calibration optimized. This tool is used to verify and optimize sensor calibration. To complete the optimization process, follow the procedure depicted in the following figure.

1. Press the Acquire button to activate the sensor. 2. Lay the calibration plate on a stable plane surface. Position the scanner at approximately 10 cm (4 in) from the calibration plate. 3. Use the Preview button on the ZScanner 800 to position the laser cross in the white cross of the calibration plate. 4. Press the trigger and slowly move the scanner away from the plate, to an approximate distance of 60 cm (24 in) or until the 10 measurements are taken. Make sure that the laser cross stays in the white cross of the calibration plate. 5. Follow recommendations displayed in the Sensor Diagnostic area.

28

ZScan User Guide It is possible to see your factory calibration date as well as last optimization date. Please note that for you to see your factory calibration date, your scanner must have been calibrated after the ZScan 1.3 release date (July 1st, 2007). Press the Default button to reset the sensor calibration to its factory settings. Use this functionality only if, for some reason, the optimization process fails to give valid results. It is also possible to restore the scanner to the factory settings via the Sensor Manager.

Sensor Configuration
This tool is used to configure the sensors laser power and the cameras shutter time according to the type of surface you wish to scan. Since each surface has different reflection properties, it is important to adjust the sensor's parameters to get an optimal detection of the laser lines. The figure below shows the sensor configuration dialog.

To configure the sensor correctly, hold the scanner at the nominal distance from the object (~30 centimeters) and press the trigger. The laser lines will be displayed in grey, yellow or red, depending if they are exposed correctly. The parameters should be set so

29

ZScan Manual that a majority of detected laser points are included in the reliable zone (yellow). If the laser lines are underexposed, they will not be detected entirely. On the other hand, if laser lines are saturated, there will be a lot of noise in the resulting scan and the laser lines will not be detected precisely. It is possible to adjust the parameters through the two sliders at the bottom of the dialog. The Laser Power slider controls the output power of the laser. It is expressed as a percentage of the peak laser power. A higher value will result in less points being underexposed. The Shutter slider controls the exposure time of each frame and is expressed in milliseconds. A higher value in that slider means that more light will come from the laser line, and it will appear more saturated. The Auto Adjust tool will adjust the scanner parameters and find which parameters will be optimal for the object the user is trying to scan. This works well if the laser lines are entirely contained within the object to scan. It can be used as an initial approximation if the laser lines are only partially enclosed within the object to scan. The Save button can be used to save a template of parameters, which can later be loaded with the Open button. It can prove to be useful when scanning similar objects. Sensor parameters can be restored to their default setting by hitting the Default button. It is possible to reset the parameters to what they were before opening the sensor configuration tool by hitting the Reset button.

Sensor Manager
At the end of the installation process, or at all times after that, it is possible to access the sensor manager in order to manage the configuration and license files for your scanner. This utility is available through the menu Configure | Sensor Manager. The figure below shows the main sensor manager window. The main feature of this window is the Sensor list, which include all the sensors installed on that particular computer. It is possible to install more than one scanner on the same computer, as in the example below. The Configuration and License columns show the status of the configuration and license files for one particular scanner. If the files are correctly installed, there will be a mark in the respective checkbox. The column Active indicate whether a particular scanner is currently active. In order to improve ZScan's loading time, it is possible to deactivate scanners. The improvement in performance when starting the software will be most noticeable if many scanners are installed on the same computer. Please note that having many active scanners won't impact on ZScan's scanning performance. In the example below, the scanner OK is installed correctly and is currently active. The scanner Inactive is correctly installed, but cannot be used as it is currently deactivated. The scanner NoConfig cannot be used as its configuration file is missing and is therefore inactive.

30

ZScan User Guide

When clicking on the New button, the user is prompted to enter the scanner serial number and to browse to the location of the configuration and license files. These files are located on the CD provided with the scanner. Click on OK to install the files. Once this is done, the scanner is ready to be used.

From the main window, it is also possible to restore the scanner's calibration to the factory default. Be careful, as this manipulation cannot be undone.

Software Uninstallation
ZScan can be uninstalled through the Add and Remove Programs in Windows Control Panel. In Windows XP: In the Start Menu, go to Parameters Control Panel. In that panel, go to Add and Remove Programs. Select the Modify or Remove Programs tab, and select ZScan from the list. Click on Change/Uninstall and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the removal process. In Windows Vista: In the Start Menu, click on Control Panel. In that panel, go to Programs and Features. Select ZScan from the list and click Uninstall. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the removal process.

31

ZScan Manual The Uninstallation tool will give the user the choice of keeping his license and configuration files. If Yes is selected, the folders ZScan\Configuration and ZScan\Licence will not be removed.

Scanning Techniques
Object Preparation
Applying targets
It is essential to prepare the object prior to scanning. Reflective targets must be affixed randomly on the object with a minimal distance of 20 mm (0.75 in) between them. For surfaces with a low curvature, the distance between each target can reach 100 mm (4 in). Those targets will enable the system to position itself in space. Positioning targets must be applied on plane surfaces, keeping at least 12 mm from the edges on every side. Here is an example of proper target distribution.

33

ZScan Manual

For better digitization, any object that is shinny, black, transparent or reflective, (mirror, shiny or metallic surface) might need to be covered with white powder in order to give it a matte finish.

Proper target distribution may be difficult to obtain, particularly for small surfaces (small objects). It is then suggested to distribute the targets on a plane (preferably black/dark and matte) and to place the object on this plane.

Importing Positioning Features

It is possible to import in ZScan a previously acquired positioning model or positioning features acquired by the ZScanner 800 or by a photogrammetry system. The two types of files that can be imported are .txt and .obc files. The text files (.txt) to be imported must include three columns (X, Y, Z), separated with a SPACE. The three columns represent the center of the target. Files exported by ZScan are exported in the right format and can be used natively by the software. The .obc files are files produced by AICON photogrammetry systems. These files can be imported directly into ZScan. Imported targets will then appear as spheres in the 3D Viewer as it is impossible for ZScan to know in which direction they are. The scanner will use the positioning targets pattern to position itself in space and will add the normal after detecting the targets for the first time. Please note that only ZScanner targets can be recognized. Any other type of reflective target will not be usable in ZScan.

Using Sensor Configuration

Depending on the color and finish of the part to scan, the ZScanner 800's parameters may require a little tuning. These adjustments are necessary to allow acquisition and to limit the level of noise in the data. While the default laser and camera parameters are set for a wide range of surfaces, it is possible that they need to be changed in order to acquire the data properly. Moreover, when the part to scan includes more than one color or finish, adjusting laser parameters becomes more complex. Three situations can occur when trying to scan: Under-exposition: The reflection of the laser is not or is weakly perceived by the cameras. There is not enough information gathered by the software to calculate and build a mesh from the physical surface. Saturation: The reflection of the laser is so intense that the cameras are blinded. The laser line is not clearly defined and may lead to an improper surface reconstruction, or an unusual amount of noise in the data.

34

ZScan User Guide Reliable: The laser is reflected as a clean and defined line. Surface calculation is done under ideal circumstances.

Before starting the acquisition process, it is important to optimize the configuration of the ZScanner 800 for the part being scanned. An adequate scanner configuration will ensure a good detection of the laser lines and a proper reconstruction of the surface. Please refer to the Sensor Configuration section for more information on the Sensor Configuration dialog. Since it is possible to change the configuration of the sensor during the scan, many strategies can be adopted for scanning multi-shaded parts. If the contrast is low, a compromise can be reached between the different colors and still get a good result on the laser lines detection. However, if the contrast on the piece is high, it is best to scan one part of the object, change the sensor configuration and finish the scan with the rest of the scan. Please note that it is not necessary to stop the scan to access the Sensor Configuration dialog.

Calibrate Scanner
The ZScanner 800 being a high precision measurement instrument, calibration is crucial to ensure the quality and accuracy of the results. Just like for any standard measurement instrument, calibration is made using a known reference. When on the field, because of changes in the environment of the sensor, calibration may be affected. These changes are mostly due to variations in temperature or pressure, and result in modifications of the mechanical configuration. The glass plate is used to compensate for these changes. The software optimizes the calibration in order to get back to the initial measuring characteristics, but in a different environment.

35

ZScan Manual When acquiring data of the calibration plate, it is important to be as perpendicular to the plate as possible and to keep the laser cross in the white area of the plate. Ten measures of the targets on the plate are taken. That data is compared to the known data of the initial calibration. Depending on the results of the comparison, the calibration may be accepted or rejected. If accepted, the sensor is ready to scan. If the calibration fails, some details need to be checked before concluding to a decalibrated scanner: 1. There are no reflective objects near the calibration plate. Detection of a false positioning feature is likely to make the process fail. In that case, remove the objects and try again. 2. Verify that the calibration targets are in good condition. Every target on the plate should be in perfect condition. Even only one damaged or misplaced target will produce an Optimization failed message. 3. Click on the Default button in order to restore the calibration to the factory settings and try the optimization again. If all these steps fail, please contact Customer Support for further help. The reflective targets of the calibration plate do not have the same coating than the ones used for scanning. Because of this, their sensitivity to exterior contaminants is greater. It is therefore important not to touch them with your fingers or any other oily substance.

Proper Scanning Distance

While digitizing, a meter displayed on the left of the screen indicates the distance between the scanner and the object. This meter is also represented on the scanner by 3 LED located on the upper part of the ZScanner 800 (red, green, red). The table below illustrates the relationship between the distance meter in ZScan and on the ZScanner 800.

Scanner is too close

36

ZScan User Guide

Distanc e is OK.

Scanner is too far.

Note: Your scanner model might differ from the illustration, but the mechanism remains the same

When the scanner is too close to or too far from the surface, it loses tracking. This means that the cameras can no longer position the targets or that the target distribution is incorrect. If tracking is lost, reposition the scanner in front of a surface already scanned and trigger again or try to redistribute the targets differently on the surface. When a temporary malfunction occurs,it is indicated by 2 red LEDs located on the upper part of the ZScanner 800.

Editing the Scan

ZScan offers some editing functions in order to clean the 3D model before publishing a final result. The available functionalities are described below.

Deleting facets
During digitization, it is possible that undesired surfaces be acquired. Sometimes, a shiny surface or a specular reflection can produce noise in the scan. Before publishing a final

37

ZScan Manual result, it may be necessary to delete these undesirable facets. It can be done in two different ways. The small facets can be removed with the Remove Isolated Patches slider in the Facets Parameters expanding panel. In the example below, a specular reflection created artifacts in the STL. By increasing the value of the slider, the small patches are removed automatically. The algorithm identifies the largest object and removes smaller patches whose size is determined by the value of the slider.

The bigger patches (or the smaller patches that are somehow connected to the main object) can be removed via the Recycle function. In the example below, the hand of the person who was scanning was mistakenly scanned. The Freeform Selection tool was used to select the unwanted triangles. Then, the Recycle button from the toolbar was clicked on to send the unwanted patch to the recycle bin. It is also possible to permanently delete triangles using the Delete function.

Increasing Resolution

38

ZScan User Guide If you want more details on a particular part of a piece, it is possible to increase the resolution locally. The Increase Resolution function will increase the resolution of the selected facets by 4. As you can see in the figure below, the resolution of a part of the piece was increased in order to have a better view of the details. The effect of that function is much more drastic than changing the resolution of the volume, hence it should only be used locally because of memory constraints.

With the ZScanner 800, if you want to increase the resolution on a part of the piece, use the High Resolution mode on the scanner. This option will turn on the third camera of the scanner and acquire the laser curves directly in high resolution for better precision and accuracy in these zones.

Decreasing Resolution
If some regions in the scan have had their resolution increased, it is possible to revert this surface to the original resolution by using the Decrease Resolution function. As with the previous tool, this acts on a selected set of triangles, which is, partially or completely, in increased resolution. The following figure shows the decrease in resolution for a particular zone. It is important to note that the selection made in this case was larger than the zone that was actually decreased. The transition between increased and normal resolution zone is done automatically and in a way as to make it as smooth as possible.

With the ZScanner 800, the laser curves acquired in high resolution mode can be decreased in order to keep the high resolution only on the interesting details. This can be useful to prevent unwanted details from being displayed on the digitized surface.

Restoring Facets

39

ZScan Manual Any facet removed using the Recycle function or the Remove Isolated Patches slider will be put in the Recycle Bin. In the case of facets deleted with the Recycle Facets function, enter the Facets Edition mode and right-click on the corresponding mode in the Scan Tree. The Restore function will become available. If the facets were deleted with the Remove Isolated Patches slider, it will not be possible to restore them from the Recycle bin. Instead, you must go back to the Surface Parameters Expanding Panel in the Surface mode and change the slider to a more conservative value. The deleted facets will then be restored in the STL, depending on the new value of the slider. Facets permanently deleted with the Delete facets function will not appear in the Recycle bin and it is impossible to restore them.

ZScan User Guide First, make sure that you are scanning your calibration plate properly. You can also check for any reflective object as far a 2 feet around the plate on each side. You can also try to "Reset" your Configuration File by using the Default button in the Calibration Window. I had a "Out of memory" error and now there is no surface or facets in my session. Your data was not lost in the process. The new memory manager will inform you that it is out of memory and was not able to rebuild the surface/facets. You can set your resolution to a lower level and try to rebuild the surface. If this is unsuccessful for any reason, set the resolution to Low, save your session, restart ZScan and try to open it again. Some holes appear when I increase the resolution. Increasing resolution requires more data. Holes can be created if there is not enough data to reconstruct the surface at this resolution. My surface doesnt appear completely when in Facets view. The part you are scanning may be too large or may not be centered in the scanning space. Make sure that your scan is properly positioned using the functions available in Surface view.

Scanning Techniques Solutions

I am not able to scan small parts. Smaller parts require more data. Contrast is very important for the scanner to detect what to scan and what not to scan. If it looks like it is not catching the surface, try using a background that is the same color as the part you are trying to scan. I have some trouble scanning the darker surfaces or parts of the surface. It is very important to adjust the laser power and shutter time according to each surface to scan.

Miscellaneous Solutions
I checked the option to install the plugin for Geomagic, but there is nothing under plugin in Geomagic. Make sure that you chose the right plugin for your version of Geomagic and that you can find the file ZScanGeomagicXPlugIn.dll where "X" should be your version of Geomagic.
