EXERCISE 1 1. Write the following as full (decimal) numbers in SI units: (a) 286.6 mm, (b)85 V (c) 760 mg, (d) 60.0 ps, (e) 22.5 fm, (f) 2.50 GV. 2. A typical adult human lung contains about 300 million tiny cavities called alveoli. Assume Two vectors have length V1 = 3.5 km and V 2 = 4.0 km. What are the maximum and minimum magnitudes of their vector sum? V is a vector 14.3 units in magnitude and points at an angle of 34.8 above the negative x axis. (a) Sketch this vector. (b) Find V x (the x-component) and V y . (the y-component) of this vector. 4. A car is driven 215 km west and then 85 km southwest. Draw a vector diagram to represent this motion. What is the displacement of the car from the point of origin? 5. An airplane is traveling 735 km h-1 in a direction 41.5 west of north. (a) Find the components of the velocity vector in the northerly and westerly directions. (b) How far north and how far west has the plane traveled after 3.00 h? 6. A plane flies from base camp to lake A, a distance of 280 km at a direction of 20.0 north of east. After dropping off supplies, the plane flies to lake B, which is 190 km and 30.0 west of north from lake A. Draw a vector diagram to represent the motion. Determine the distance and direction from lake B to the base camp. 7. While exploring a cave, an explorer starts at the entrance and moves the following distances: 75.0 m north, 250 m east, 125 m at an angle 30.0 north of east, and 150 m south. Find the resultant displacement from the cave entrance. 8. A commuter airplane starts from an airport first flies to city A, located 175 km away in a direction 30.0 north of east. Next, it flies for 150 km 20.0 west of north, to city B. Finally, the plane flies 190 km due west, to city C. Find the location of city C relative to the location of the starting point. 9. An airplane starting from airport A flies 300 km east, then 350 km at 30.0 west of north, and then 150 km north to arrive finally at airport B. (a) The next day, another plane flies directly from A to B in a straight line. In what direction should the pilot travel in this direct flight? (b) How far will the pilot travel in the flight? Assume there is no wind during either flight. 10. You are driving from Kota Bharu to Kuantan in the direction of 65o South of East at a distance of 250km for 3 hours. After resting for 1 hour, you continue driving in the direction of 30o South of West heading for Kuala Lumpur 180km away for 1.5 hours. Calculate your average speed, average velocity. 11. Two ships leaves simultaneously from a port. The first ship is heading North at 30 km h-1 and the second to the East at 45 km h-1. What is the position of the second ship with respect to the first 3 hours later? 12. The distance between two jetties in 2km. The journey upstream takes 40 minutes and downstream takes 32 minutes. What is the speed of the water? 13. A man can row his boat in still water at 1.2 ms-1. (a) If he wants to cross directly on the other side of a river flowing downstream at 0.5 ms-1 what will be his speed and direction. (b) If the river is 300m wide, calculate the time taken.
3.

that the alveoli are spherical, and that the volume of a typical human lung is about 2 liters, estimate the average diameter of a single alveolus.
