Jordan Torrecillas

February has arrived, which brings two more Knights of the Month. Once again two hardworking representatives have been chosen. Karen Marquez and Jordan Torrecillas are the new Knights of the Month. Karen Marquez is all around the school. Not only is she the Student Body Secretary, but she is also Parliamentarian of the LHHS National Honors Society (NHS). After school she teaches dance to youth girls. How does she do all this? She stated she had some very important people help her along the way. My parents have helped me my whole life in making the right decisions, Marquez said. She also noted Mrs. Sautner was my freshman English teacher and now my Student Government advisor. She has been there through my worst and best times, and I cant thank her enough. Marquez also plans to attend Arizona State University (ASU) where she plans to major in Sociology. I would love to travel and do research someday, Marquez said. Finally, for Marquezs last shout out she wanted to thank her peers in Student Government. My student government family has impacted me so much. I owe all my laughs, and good Karen Marquez times to this amazing group of people. The second Knight of the Month is Jordan Torrecillas. He is also actively involved in school as member of NHS, Key Club, and Math Club. This season Torrecillas was on two varsity teams, soccer and tennis. Torrecillas also is on track to graduate high school with an Associates Degree. My parents have had the largest impact in my life. They have always been there for me. Especially when I had trouble with academics or sports, they were a reliable source of support that would help me through the situations, Torrecillas said. Jordan plans on attending the University of Arizona (UA) as a pre-physiology major in the College of Medicine. After that he plans to attend a medical college to study Neurophysiology. So far I have won the Wildcat Excellence award of $9,000 from the University of Arizona, which is renewable for four years, Torrecillas said.Athletically, he hopes to make it to the tennis state championships.

What is a teenager to do in Lake Havasu? Thanks to Havasu For Youth (HFY), pre-teens through young adults will soon have FUS!ON, the Teen Scene Havasus first teen , center. FUS!ON will be both an entertainment hotspot with concerts, games, and a coffee shop, as well as an educational facility, hosting studying and tutoring sessions and enrichment classes in everything from cooking to Zumba lessons. Part of the visions for FUS!ON is to provide a safe place where kids can have a positive safe place to do homework, learn, and just hang out, said Dianna Butler, Executive Director for HFY. Like the towns annual Project Graduation, FUS!ON will let teens have fun without sacrificing safety. Of course, this teen center still requires support from the city. What does HFY need? Items: The wish list includes furniture, cleaning/kitchen goods, and sup-

plies for the educational classes, entertainment, and study labs. Donations can be as big as desktop computers and a karaoke machine, or as small and manageable as flash drives and blank discs or books and videogames.

(The full list can be viewed on our Facebook page, LHHS Knight Life Newspaper). Volunteers: FUS!ONs location on 75 Capri Lane still needs major renovating. HFY has so far hosted a cleanup and painting prep day, both to success. Volunteering for the cleanup was a lot of fun! said junior Calli Riggen. Riggen, whose own wish list for the center includes open mike nights and computers with Wi-Fi, helped by cleaning tables and chairs and organizing the kitchen. The

people at Havasu For Youth are always so nice and fun. I definitely plan on staying involved once it is open. Money: Any donation is needed and appreciated. Paying the electric and light bills to keep the center running will definitely be important during the long summer vacation. HFY has stated they are looking for corporate donations, founders, sponsorships, service groups, individual donations, etc., to reach their goal of $100,000. The organization recently set up a Paypal account for online donations. Considering how the city came together to bring ASU here, hopefully FUS!ON can soon be a reality for the youth. We know our community needs this, said Butler. And our kids are ready for it! Donations can be made at havasuforyouth.org or at Havasu For Youths office, 145 N. Lake Havasu Ave. and P.O Box 686, Lake Havasu, AZ 86405. To keep up with FUS!ON and volunteer opportunities be sure to like the Havasu For Youth Facebook page.

Nurses aide explains the dos and donts of staying healthy

By Alexandria Shaw
FUNDAMENTALS OF JOURNALISM REPORTER

On the weekends, Arianna Clark spends her mornings snoozing away after staying up until one in the morning. Frustrated, she groans at her moms attempts to wake her up. Lackluster at having her slumber disturbed, the fourteen-yearold girl swatted her moms hand away. GET UP, screeches her mom in distress. Arianna makes no movement to listen as she

muffles the voice with a feathery pillow. What her mom does not know is that Ariannas actions are completely healthy. Nine to thirteen hours, said Lyndia LeCours, nurses aid. That is how much sleep a normal teen should get per night. Along with this fact, additional components tie into preventing illnesseating right, drinking the right fluids and washing hands. Water is always the best to drink, said LeCours. Chicken noodle

soup is the best type of food to eat when sick. For teenagers, they might be inclined to stay home when sick. However, LeCours explains why a teen should go to school. As long as the disease isnt contagious, you can be as miserable at school as you would be at home, said LeCours. In the real world, you cant just call in sick. Washing hands is also essential. It is so important to wash your hands because of spreading sickness and bacteria, said

LeCours. However, this does have a downside. If you wash your hands too often, your system will never build up immunity to it and you can get sick later on. All in all, staying healthy has quite a few factors. Sleep is one factor that Arianna definitely understands. When Arianna awakens, she is recharged to take on the day. Yawning, she stretches out her arms with a content grin. Awesome, the teen sighs.

End-of-winter Jewels and Jousts

KNIGHT LIFE

Hearts were flying and love was in the air. With Valentines Day over, were recapping on what we lo-o-o-oved at LHHS this season, and what we were, well, just not that into. Jousts to Havasus unpredictable weather. Dear Sun: it was not this cold last week. Make up your mind! Sincerely, students who have only two choices when it comes to outerwear (nylon rain jacket? Or thin cotton jacket?). Jewels to students who actually dressed up (and appropriately!) for Spirit Week and not for the sake of dressing. Yes, that black V-neck is adorable BUT HOW IS IT SWEET SIXTEEN!? Jousts to spirit weeks Class Mottos. I get Sweet 16 and sure, 13 looks like B so Like a Boss is forgivable. But how did juniors land on We Got Swag? And any class could be Keep it Classy I guess we should . be glad YOLO was no classs motto but next time have a vote, dont decide for us. Jewels to the Winter Formal Pep Rally. With a trio of talented anthem singers, a Backstreet Boys performance, and some singing/dancing from both Mr. Fowlie and Ms. Wagner; it was definitely very musical. Jousts to Senioritis (and

Junioritis/Honoritis if those exist). It isnt fun having to choose between college preparation, responsibilities, sleep and a social life especially the sleep part. Jewels to Close-Up chocolate. They get to travel the country and students get delicious goods they dont even have to go to the store for. Jousts to the new gates. Im glad were all for more school security and extra lockdowns after the most recent, and tragic, shooting in Connecticut, but if I have to hear another student whine about how FAR they have to walk to the parking lot, then Im going home, locking myself up in my room, and doing online school. Jewels to our new security guard Steve. You have a great attitude, and its nice to have friendly faces amid all these new security measures. Our photo editor also thinks your hat is awesome. Jousts to only 80 students being allowed for the senior's Disney Grad Night. Yeah yeah, it costs to have hotel rooms and a bus we understand...it's just unfair knowing only the students who can get money that fast or who know about the trip first will take the seats. Jewels to the students who participated in our Matchomatics fundraiser, took the surveys seriously and had fun. We had fun too!

PARENTS TO FOLLOW STUDENTS FOOTSTEPS Parents, ever wonder what your teen does at school? Well, now you can find out! There is a day when students are shadowed by their parent/guardian. Parents are able to see what their students schedule and classes are

like. Parent Day will be held on Thursday, Feb. 28. Since students have Knight Time that day, parents will go to the cafeteria and enjoy some coffee and cookies until Knight Time is over. Students and parents will meet up afterwards to continue their shadowing.
