Urban spaces are an agglomeration of various layers which continuously overlap to create these distinct significant spaces, though

the perception of each space varies with gender time culture place. As students of architecture we learned that it is the mirror of culture of place at a particular time affected by social, political, historical and geographic climate of plarce. The second year began with analysing spiritually significant spaces (dargahs) in urban muslim context rooted in Delhi. We found that, urban spaces are about appropriation and there are various forces which conceptualise its creation as well as evolution in the time-space frame. The main idea understood is the relevance of context in the design and it is very essential for us as designers to be sensitive to the surroundings. The significance not only lies in the present scenario, but also the past and possible future projections. Next we went to pushkar to deepen our understanding ofspiritually significant spaces. the city in the ajmer district of rajasthan ,398 km from delhi is primarily a religious settlement whose economy is based on piligrims and tourists Moving from the confines of the Dargah to the spiritual depths of Pushkar Lake was an exhilarating experience. The Lake, though emerged from nothingness, is the core focus in the making of the entire city of Pushkar. Enclosed by peaks on three sides and desert on the other Pushkar is the favourable catchment area with this being the geographic reason for creation of such setting. The dominant historical and mythological aspects have translated themselves into the city. Though the mechanics of these may have changed, but the significances are still relevant in the urban scenario. It is not just the mere physical presence of the lake that attributes to the making of this religious settlement, but also the mental memory of people, owing to the stories and fables that have been passed on over the generations. Understanding the city from the eyes of inhabitants was a complex procedure as it involved unfolding of the various beliefs and myths .for this we analysed the city in terms of its origin morphology size function population political layering thereby subdividing our study under morphology ecology typology and mythology .all these different layers intertwine into each other making this mesmerising city.it is this mix of these layers which give the city of pushkar its meaning Unlike most other towns pushkar has retained its essence inspite of the political and contemporary events around the place . Thus the space, as long as outside the city, remains democratic and secular(dargah) and if it is within the city, it becomes issue based and has to compulsorily align itself according to the city patterns(Pushkar lake) .
