Assemblyman Lopez Visits Fleischmanns

Mayor Todd Pascarella invited Assemblyman Pete Lopez to visit Fleischmanns on Friday, February 8, 2013. Despite the predictions of high winds and blizzard-like snow conditions, Pete Lopez kept the appointment and toured the Village with Todd Pascarella, Larry Reilly, Chair of the Planning Board and Village FEMA liaison and Trustee Harriet Grossman. The focus of the tour was on those areas adversely affected by Hurricane Irene and for which applications for FEMA funding are still pending. This, of course, includes the park. It was cold and windy and the snow was beginning to fall during the walk through town. Assemblyman Lopez listened to the issues and asked pointed questions. A meeting with representatives of Fleischmanns Firsts Bridge Street Bridge Committee took place at the Village offices. Assemblyman Lopez is no stranger to devastation caused by flooding streams. He lives in a small town in Schoharie County which was also adversely affected by the Hurricane. He is familiar with the detail and intricacies of FEMA and most importantly agreed to work with Fleischmanns Village leaders to move the process forward. With regard to the bridge replacement he is wondering about the length of the span of the bridge that Department of Public Works says is required. He understands the Villages strong desire to have vehicular access between Wagner Avenue and Main Street via Bridge Street and appreciates the difficulty that the lack of direct access is causing residents and businesses as well. Assemblyman Lopez seems a worthy advocate for our Village! We thank him for his visit and attentiveness to our issues.

Fleischmanns Forum- Park Presentation Over thirty Fleischmanns residents and interested parties attended a presentation on the renovation plans for Wagner Avenue Park at the fourth Fleischmanns Forum held February 2nd. The presentation began with a visioning statement made by Mayor Todd Pascarella who also described the progression of the plan from 2009, pre flood, to the current plan for the new playground, tennis courts, basketball courts, running and fitness track and ball fields. More detailed presentations were made by Sindy Becker on the tennis courts, Jeanine Pascarella on an inclusive playground, Kathleen Rostad on an adult fitness circuit and Peg Ellsworth on the finances for all the foregoing. Some grants are already in place. Anyone interested in reviewing the full budget and revenue already received, should contact Peg Ellsworth at Mark Project. Sindy Becker announced a $50,000 matching grant for the tennis courts from the Pasternack Family Fund and the hope that even more individuals will join those that collectively donated close to $20,000 to date. Escrow accounts for the playground and the tennis courts have been established and are growing daily. A Justin Kolb Musicale Evening is taking place on March 16th- see the invite herewith. So join in with enthusiasm and make a donation today! The plans are exciting and offer some form of athletic or exercise option for one and all. The preflood park was used extensively by residents of the surrounding community, the new park when it is completed will certainly bring even more people to Fleischmanns. "If you build it, they will come !"

Fleischmanns Factoid The building known today as the Community Bank building has always been a bank; built in 1911, it has a keystone at the top of the facade showing the year of construction, instead of a cornerstone. Many different banks have occupied the space over the years and at times part of the building was used by other businesses, such as a drug store, and medical offices.

Letter from Mayor Pascarella ..

Greetings to Everyone in the Fleischmanns Community, Even though we are in the dead of winter, spring is just around the corner. That means the wheels are already in motion as we are shaping another busy year for our Village. The wonderful events that Fleischmanns First sponsors draw attention to the many good things we have to offer. The Village government is continuing the process of planning and rebuilding in the wake of the devastation from hurricane Irene. We are also preparing for another important function of our democracy, Village Election Day. This year there will actually be four out of the five Village elected positions on the ballot. Normally there would have been just three including two trustees and the mayor's seat. However due to an early resignation last year there will be an extra position on the ballot to fill the remaining year in that term. The bottom line is that there is a lot on the line this year. If you are a voter in the Village of Fleischmanns you will help shape the future of this year and years to come. Village Election Day is Tuesday March 19th between 12 and 9 pm so be sure to make it down to the library to exercise your right to vote. If you live in the Village but are not registered to vote in the Village election you have one last chance to do so. On Saturday March 9 between 12 and 5 pm you can go to the library to register. Regardless of who you support, casting your vote helps strengthen our great democracy so we need to hear from you! Sincerely, Todd Pascarella, Mayor
