AbstractGeometry of worm is controlled by parameters like module, diameter of pitch cylinder, and pressure angle. The standard relations between the parameters of worms have been used to develop the parametric model of single start worm using Pro-E Wildfire 5.0. Basic Relations and Parameters are first introduced in Relations table. By using different Pro-E tools, worm has been modeled. Regeneration is done by relating different dimensions of model with the standard equations. Parametric model of worm can be used further for different analysis. of the worm. This is also known as the middle lead angle of the worm. (5) Addendum (ha), Dedendum (hf): If the lead angle is small, the addendum and dedendum should be selected in relation to the axial module. It can be seen that as the lead angle increases, the axial module also increases for the same normal module. Following relations of addendum and dedendum with module and pressure angle are used.
ha = m and hf = 1.2* m for Phi<150 ha = m and hf = 1.4* m for Phi>=150

I. INTRODUCTION A worm resembles the thread of a screw which wraps around a root cylinder in a helical fashion. The profile of the thread is either straight or slightly curved, depending upon the type of design used. The teeth of worm in worm-drive system may or may not be of involute form depending upon the designing needs. The worm may have more than one tooth or thread helix. It should be noted that the number of teeth is referred as the number of start. The basic dimensional parameters of the worm is pressure angle, module, length of thread, diameter of pitch cylinder, addendum, dedendum, tooth thickness, Number of turns of the thread. The worm is coupled with a worm gear. II. BASIC PARAMETERS OF WORM AND WORM WHEEL (1) Pressure angle (alpha): The pressure angle used in worm gearing depends upon the lead angle (angle of worm helix). The pressure angle must be large enough to avoid undercutting of gear tooth on the side at which the contact ends. (2) Axial pitch of worm (p): The axial pitch is the distance measured axially, from a point on one tooth to the corresponding point on an adjacent tooth. (3) Number of starts of worm: A worm can have a single or more threads or teeth which are wound around the cylindrical body of the worm along the length of the worm. The number of such threads has been termed as the number of starts. The number of starts should not normally exceed 6. (4) Angle of Worm helix (Phi): This is the angle subtended between a tangent to the pitch helix and a plane normal to the axis

(6) Hand of worm: A worm may be classified as right handed or left handed depending upon the direction of helix of the worm thread in which the thread winds around the root cylinder. Following table describes the relations of worm parameters.[1]

III. MODELLING THE WORM IN PROENGINEER Open a new part file in ProEngineer wildfire 5.0. Click on Tools Parameters and create the input parameters as mentioned in Table 1.These three parameters will decide the geometry of the worm. The relations between other dimensions of worm with these input parameters are given in Table 2. Now, click on ToolsRelations and enter equations (relations) for remaining parameters (refer Fig. 1).[4]

Now, insert helical sweep surface with attributes Constant, Thru Axis and Right Handed. Sketch sweep profile as shown in Fig.2 on front plane as sketching plane and right plane as datum plane oriented to the right and establish the relations shown in Fig. 3. Set pitch equal to some logical value. Finally, sketch the open section as shown in Fig. 4 with relations shown in Fig. 5 to complete the helical sweep surface. Right click on surface in model tree, and then select Edit. Select pitch dimension in the model and rename it to PD1. Set relation in ToolsRelations: PD1=p to assign calculated pitch to the swept surface. This swept surface is the helix of required worm which is required to be extended on both sides for entry and exit of the thread. This shall be completed by selecting edge of one end of surface and using extend tool available in edit menu. The length of extended surface shall be set in such a way that it can be trimmed later on.

diameter of circle should equal to parameter D which can be set in ToolsRelations of the sketch. The surface shall be extruded on both sides of the plane with the depth specified by the following relations:
first_side_length=L+0.25*L second_side_length=0.25*L

The model so far created is shown in Fig. 6. There are two surfaces in the model helical surface with extending ends and extruded cylindrical surface. Select these two surfaces and click on EditMerge to merge them. The resultant model is shown in Fig. 7. Now, use extrude tool to add material with sketch on top plane and use use tool of sketcher to sketch the circle as shown in Fig. 8. Set the extrusion depth by selecting To Selected option for both sides and select end on respective side. Finally, select previously merged surface and click EditSolidify. The final model of worm is shown in Fig. 9.

A large variety of worm models can be created using the parametric model developed here by modifying the values of user defined parameters. The individual regenerated models can then be directly imported for the finite element analysis as well as kinematic and dynamic analyses. V. REFERENCES [1] Gitin M.
