Linear Indication: A linear indication is one having a length greater than three times the width.

Rounded Indication: A rounded indication is one of circular or elliptical shape with a length equal to or less than three times its width.

Relevent Indication: Only indications with major dimensions greater than 116 in. (1.5 mm) shall be considered relevant. ACCEPTANCE STANDARDS: These acceptance standards shall apply unless other more restrictive standards are specified for specific materials or applications within this Division. All surfaces to be examined shall be free of: (a) relevant linear indications; (b) relevant rounded indications greater than 316 in. (5 mm); (c) four or more relevant rounded indications in a line separated by 116 in. (1.5 mm) or less (edge to edge).

UT Acceptance criteria: ACCEPTANCEREJECTION STANDARDS Imperfections which produce a response greater than 20% of the reference level shall be investigated to the extent that the operator can determine the shape, identity, and location of all such imperfections and evaluate them in terms of the acceptance standards given in (a) and (b) below. (a) Indications characterized as cracks, lack of fusion, or incomplete penetration are unacceptable regardless of length. (b) Other imperfections are unacceptable if the indications exceed the reference level amplitude and have lengths which exceed: (1) 14 in. (6 mm) for t up to 34 in. (19 mm); (2) 13t for t from 34 in. to 214 in. (19 mm to 57 mm); (3) 34 in. (19 mm) for t over 214 in. (57 mm). where t is the thickness of the weld excluding any allowable reinforcement. For a butt weld joining two members having different thicknesses at the weld, t is the thinner of these two thicknesses. If a full penetration weld includes a fillet weld, the thickness of the throat of the fillet shall be included in t.

7.5.4.2 Acceptance Criteria. All imperfections that produce an amplitude greater than 20% of the reference level shall be Investigated to the extent that the operator can determine the shape, identity, and location of all such imperfections and evaluate them in terms of the acceptance standards given in (a) and (b) below. (a) Imperfections that are interpreted to be cracks, lack of fusion, or incomplete penetration are unacceptable regardless of length. (b) All other linear type imperfections are unacceptable if the amplitude exceeds the reference level and the length of the imperfection exceeds the following:

(1) 6 mm (1/4 in.) for t less than 19 mm (3/4 in.) (2) t/3 for t greater than or equal to 19 mm (3/4 in.) and less than or equal to 57 mm (2-1/4 in.) (3) 19 mm (3/4 in.) for t greater than 57 mm (2-1/4 in.) In the above criteria, t is the thickness of the weld, excluding any allowable reinforcement (see paragraph 6.2.4.1(d)). For a butt weld joining two members having different thicknesses at the weld, t is the thinner of these two thicknesses. If a full penetration weld includes a fillet weld, the thickness of the throat of the fillet shall be included in t.
