Unit Topic: Leadership

Grade level: 5th

Stage 1 Desired Results Content Standard/Established Goals(s): Common Core for 5th grade: Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.(p12); Compare and contrast stories in the same genre (e.g., historical fiction, non-fiction) on their approaches to similar themes and topics.(p12); Compare and contrast the overall structure (comprehension, cause and effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in one or more texts.(p14); Integrate information from several texts on the same topic in order to write or speak about the subject knowledgeably.(p14); Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons and information.(p20); Social Studies standards (TBD either westward expansion or Civil War based) Understanding(s) Essential Question(s): Students will understand that: What does it mean to be a leader? A leader is someone who inspires What are some common others. misconceptions about leadership? essay/letter advocating for an issue that they feel strongly about (ex: expansion of Russell Byers to include grades 7-8 or having a lunch program at R.B.)
