PRECAST CONCRETE BOX CULVERTS

INTRODUCTION Precast box culverts are the ideal solution for most forms of culvert or road underpass. Their proven strength and durability ensure the long term service life requirements are easily met without the complex maintenance issues associated with steel culverts. They are quick and easy to install thereby ensuring that there is a minimum of disruption caused to the users of the road. The demand for precast box culverts is constantly growing due to their flexibility and the tight constraints on site programmes. Banagher Concrete now have forty different box culvert moulds in use and were constantly adding to this list. In addition to standard box units we also offer a u-duct option which is outlined on a separate information sheet. Each culvert is individually designed by our experienced design team for any application and for any loading including RU railway loads. All our designs fulfill the requirements of BS5400 and BD 31/87. TYPICAL APPLICATIONS

Balancing tanks The most economic means of storing large volumes of storm water is to use single or multiple spans of box culvert. Stream culverts Allows the developer to achieve maximum benefit from the land. We have designed culverts to pass under buildings. Road culvert The quickest and most economical means of constructing a road crossing or replacing a small bridge. Multi-Cell Multiple lines of culvert are laid side by side to meet any flow capacity requirement. Pipe replacement U nlike concrete pipes, culverts can be designed for as little as 200mm cover for situations where finished levels have tight constraints. Underpasses Sizes are available to suit pedestrian and vehicle underpasses. Another common use is the cattle underpass with larger culverts allowing agricultural vehicles access. Tunnels Culverts are often used for underground service tunnels, escape tunnels and pedestrian subways. Shafts Used on their end culverts can provide vertical access shafts which can resist very high pressures. They are also used in this way to pre-fabricate water storage tanks.

FLOW CAPACITY

The discharge rates indicated in the above diagram are based on the Colebrook-White equation and assume that the culvert is running full under uniform flow conditions with a gradient of 1 in 1000 and a roughness coefficient of 0.3mm. Please note that any culvert can be used on its side with the resulting flow capacity remaining unchanged. The area of the culvert can be calculated by multiplying the width by the height less 0.02 m to take account of the internal chamfers.

ASSOCIATED PRODUCTS

Banagher Concrete endeavour to provide the complete culvert system in precast concrete. This system often includes wing walls tapered to suit the profile of the road embankment and head beams, which are doweled into the culvert roof to retain the fill. Square wing walls can be delivered to site in the form of a U section if required. In the event that a splayed culvert mouth is required we will provide L shaped wing walls with projecting steel at the base so that an in-situ slab can easily be poured.
