Data/Voice Bandwidth Managers

MAXce
for Frame Relay, ISDN, Leased Line and Wireless Networks

any organizations today are taking advantage of bandwidth-saving technologies by running their data traffic over public Frame Relay services or over leased lines or wireless links in private Frame Relay networks. These companies are also taking advantage of their data network infrastructure to run voice over data services. Using a single infrastructure for transmitting both voice and data offers many benefits, such as lower communications costs, reduced infrastructure expenses and fewer network management efforts. RAD offers a full line of integrated bandwidth managers that optimize the use of Frame Relay and leased line networks. The MAXcess family of bandwidth managers supports a mix of traffic, including voice, fax, video and multiprotocol data, such as HDLC, IP, IPX, sync and async traffic. MAXcess assures effective bandwidth utilization and maximizes the effectiveness of lower speed links. Intelligent voice switching ensures a smooth transition to the integrated voice and data network.

MAXcess-3000
A modular hub ideally suited to large network nodes. Only 4U high, the MAXcess-3000 supports up to 72 data channels and 44 voice channels via 12 I/O slots. Hot-swappable I/O modules and optional redundant power supply increase system reliability and uptime.

MAXcess-3004
A modular hub for smaller sites, supporting five I/O slots and the same I/O modules as the MAXcess-3000.

MAXcess-300
A compact, 1U high, stand-alone access switch that provides cost-effective branch office connectivity, the MAXcess-300 incorporates four analog or two ISDNS0 voice/fax channels and six data channels. An optional integrated router is also available. The MAXcess-300 offers access over ISDN, Frame Relay and leased lines.

MAXcess-30
A compact desktop access switch for smaller environments such as SOHO. The ideal virtual office solution, the MAXcess-30 supports two analog or one ISDN-S0 voice/fax channel and three data channels. An optional integrated router is also available.

MAXcess reduces the cost of network ownership by transporting all traffic types, without the need for separate access equipment or separate networks.

MAXcess Features Advanced Bandwidth Management Technologies

ased on standard Frame Relay switching technology, using dynamic bandwidth allocation and compressed voice, MAXcess ensures efficient, reliable and cost-effective corporate communications.
Saves on Intra-Company Communications
Voice over Frame Relay (VoFR) takes advantage of the data network to run packetized voice. It circumvents the PSTN for inter-office telephone calls, thereby eliminating monthly telephone bills. MAXcess VoFR also enables branch offices to benefit from the functionality of the central PBX. Each branch office becomes just an extension away from headquarters. In addition, calls destined for the PSTN are routed through the network and exit at the most economical point, establishing a local call rather than a long-distance call. same numbering plan in use in the existing voice network (i.e., PBXs), so users are not affected by the migration to the integrated voice and data network.

Single Compression-Decompression Cycle Maintains High Voice Quality

Calls between remote offices are routed via the central MAXcess unit and not via the central PBX. This eliminates tandeming, or multiple compressiondecompression cycles. Voice calls are compressed only once, when they enter the MAXcess device, and are decompressed once, when they exit to the destination PBX or telephone. Avoiding the PBX not only maintains the voice quality, but also saves costly PBX voice ports.

Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation

By statistically integrating all traffic types over Frame Relay, leased lines, satellite or radio links, MAXcess makes the most efficient use of available bandwidth. MAXcess dynamically allocates bandwidth according to the needs of each application.

Highest Quality Voice Compression

MAXcess offers low bit rate voice compression at data rates from 5.1 kbps to 8.3 kbps. Voice compression is based on ITU standard G.723.1 for compressed voice. Since most access links to Frame Relay networks are 56/64 kbps, it is essential to have high quality voice compression that will permit the greatest number of simultaneous calls without compromising voice quality.

Intelligent Voice Switching

The unique voice switching technique of the MAXcess provides fast and efficient call routing. It reduces infrastructure and service costs and is easy to set up and implement. MAXcess preserves the

Silence Suppression
MAXcess automatically detects silent periods in an active voice call and frees this bandwidth to allow more voice and data sessions.

Single DLCI Saves Communications Costs

MAXcess can multiplex all voice and data transmissions at each site over a single DLCI, saving on Frame Relay service charges and simplifying configuration.

Compressed Voice System

For applications that transfer mainly voice traffic, the , MAXcess in RAD s Compressed Voice System (CVS) over Frame Relay delivers toll-quality voice at a compression ratio of up to 10:1, including Frame Relay overhead. It can accommodate different voice compression and fax rates for commercial-grade service (for example, voice at 5.1 kbps and fax at 9.6 kbps).

Connection on Demand
Support of ISDN in the MAXcess saves on WAN costs by providing connectivity only when needed. The ISDN link, used mainly for backup, is established or disconnected automatically over PRI or BRI lines.

Prioritization and Fragmentation

Long and variable delays between Frame Relay voice packets result in awkward-sounding speech and interfere with the conversation. To avoid delays in transmitting voice and other time-sensitive traffic, MAXcess assigns traffic types to seven priority levels. Higher priority traffic receives precedence in entering the network. The unique FR+ segmentation protocol employed by the MAXcess fragments data frames only when necessary (that is, if higher priority frames are waiting to enter the network), reducing overhead and boosting throughput.

Full Corporate Networking Solutions

Virtual Private Network (VPN) over Public Frame Relay with ISDN Backup
A VPN is a private network that operates over a shared, public network. Frame Relay VPNs based on permanent virtual connections (PVCs) provide an extremely reliable solution for multiprotocol traffic. Security and privacy are assured by built-in tunneling, since the point-to-point link between two users cannot be penetrated by any other party. Organizations with large, distributed networks run multiprotocol data and voice over Frame Relay as a cost-effective alternative to leased lines. Typically, these networks have one or two headquarters, several regional offices and many smaller branch offices. The MAXcess can be configured with a backup link over ISDN, Frame Relay, PSTN or leased lines. Backup is important for mission-critical traffic such as in government, security and emergency services applications. If the main link fails, the MAXcess routes all traffic over the backup link. When service is restored, traffic is automatically routed back through the Frame Relay network.

Voice and Data over Leased Line, Satellite or Radio Networks

The modularity and switching capabilities of MAXcess make it a cost-effective solution over leased lines, satellite or radio links. MAXcess support of asymmetric applications is important for satellite systems. The prioritization, fragmentation, echo cancellation and silence suppression features of MAXcess products minimize delay and jitter characteristic of satellite links.

ISDN S0 Voice
The MAXcess-30 and MAXcess-300 bandwidth managers provide high quality, cost-effective ISDN voice and fax support. The units can compress two ISDN BRI voice channels and the D-channel over a 64 kbps Frame Relay link. Dynamic bandwidth allocation achieves more efficient use of the line and allows running sync, async or IP/IPX data traffic in addition to ISDN voice traffic over Frame Relay, ISDN and leased line networks.
