This document has information on Germany and Berlin as regards to the Soviet Union . The United States changed presidents and this report comes from the Northern Department of the Foreign Office. This department was based in London but was staffed by experts who were familiar with events and developments in Northern Europe, especially the USSR. This is important for me to visualize what the USSR wants to achieve.

Part of a Foreign Office report describing the strengthening of the Berlin Wall, November 1961. 1961. MS. The National Archive. This source told me that the wall went up on August 13th 1961. However, it was only a barbed wire fence at first. Between August 1961 and the end of the year the wall was extended considerably. The first stage was the building of a concrete wall. Then space was cleared either side of the wall. The spaces were patrolled by armed guards and dogs. There were also towers with searchlights. This document comes from a Foreign Office

report which was passing on information provided by military observers at the wall. This information is important to the site for background information to me.

This information told me about a report of the July meeting of the officials who governed Berlin in 1961. They met once a month.The government of West Berlin was rather complicated. It involved military governors from the French, US and British forces. It also involved the civilian mayor of Berlin who was elected by the German people of the city. The Mayor was Willy Brandt.The chairman for this particular meeting was a British general.Their main topic of discussion was the refugees coming from East Germany to West Germany through West Berlin. This is important because it talked about the chaos in movement from East to West in Germany.

what the Germans did to the wall like hammering it after the ban was lifted. It told that

the East had a hard time with its economy and could not handle all of it. It made me realize also how the Germans must have felt. This site had many great pictures of the Berlin Wall.

This source told me the words that John. F Kennedy said to Germany. He was a Germany. This means that the United States would help in the cause. The United States wanted Germany to be free. This was important because it told me that other countries wanted Germany to be reunited.

It also told me about Ronald Reagan, the president at that time, and how he gave his speeches for the freedom of Germany.Thousands of East Germans flooded the gates of the Berlin Wall to the West away from communism. This site put into perspective what the presidents did to help during the time and how the Germans felt after the Wall was gone.
