COURSE DESCRIPTION
PRE REQUISITES:

The following pre requisites must be fulfilled by a student before he/she can proceed for practicum attachment in the industry: i. ii. he/she must have completed ALL courses stipulated in the Program or Study Plan (Pelan Pengajian) for the respective program. he/she to seek WRITTEN approval from the Head of Program and Industrial Training Coordinator and Head of Program for Off Campus Programs which ever is relevant, if condition (i) is not met. he/she must pre register with the Faculty for PRACTICUM CODE, and also pre register with the Industrial Training Coordinator one semester period prior industrial training. he/she must register this Course (MKT661/FIN 666) on line at the beginning of the semester. he/she must report duty to the host organization on the first day the semester begins. A student is allowed to commence practicum for a minimum of two weeks earlier before a semester commences. INDUSTRIAL TRAINING PROGRAM

Industrial Training is the final course in the Program or Study Plan whereby a student is expected to undergo on the job training (OJT) in areas relevant to the academic program and field of specialization. Industrial training program shall serve as a practical training ground for a student to

apply the knowledge learnt in the academic program, and most importantly to gain practical knowledge and acquire skills at work place in the industry. The Industrial Training is to be conducted by the selected host organization in accordance to the industrial training guidelines set by the Faculty. A student is to be exposed to the work place in the host organization; he/she is expected to perform, carry out tasks and work activities productively for the organization within the scope of program study and to gain work experiences and acquire job employability skills. A student is also expected to complete the practicum successfully and submit the Industrial Training Report (MKT 662/FIN 662) at the end of the practicum. A student is expected to abide the industrial training guidelines set by the Faculty and the University at all times. A student will be assessed and graded based on both the practicum and the project paper. 2.0 COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course objectives of the industrial training program are as follows: i. Cognitive development: a student is to acquire job knowledge, develop work skills, gain experience and work values at a workplace in an organization. Student is to apply theories, to practice and to experience through work exposure at the work place in the organization.

ii. Behavioral development: a student is to perform tasks in OJT (on the job training),
participate, solve problems and contribute productively to the organization through the applications of knowledge, skills and experience.

iii. Attitudinal and Personal development:

a student is to develop self potential, personal development and values in terms of: integrity, creativity, intellectual skills, job employability skills, job competencies, entrepreneurship skills and personal skills. 3.0 METHODS OF INSTRUCTION

The industrial training program is to be conducted by the host organization in the form of on the job training (OJT) at the work place with adequate supervision by an identified facilitator in the organization. The following sections shall outline the objectives of the industrial training, the roles of host organization, defined roles of training facilitator and roles of the trainee in the industrial training program, and the responsibilities of the advisor(s) in the faculty. 3.1 OBJECTIVES OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING PROGRAM

The objectives of industrial training program for the host organizations are to:

impart job knowledge and work skills, to provide work experience for the trainee and to instill work values at a workplace in the organization. provide on the job training (OJT) to the trainee through provision of authentic tasks and work activities so that the trainee is able to contribute productively towards attaining organizational objectives and targets.

train the trainee towards personal development in professional work values and work ethics, job employability skills, communication (ICT) skills and entrepreneurship skills.

3.2

ROLES OF THE HOST ORGANIZATION

The host organization shall comply with the following guidelines with the intent to make the industrial training effective for the trainee in OJT:

To select the right trainees through an interview process to ensure suitability of trainees and organizational needs. To provide adequate allowances for trainees that take into account trainees work contributions, basic needs and cost of living. To provide adequate orientation program for trainees on the organization, its operations and functional departments, the people and products/services. To ensure proper and suitable placement of trainee in departments in line with the area of academic study to sustain trainees motivation, and to develop trainees professional and personal skills which are of value contribution to the organization. ROLES OF THE FACILITATOR

It shall be the duty of the facilitator in the organization to provide meaningful OJT to the trainee. The roles of the training facilitator or immediate superior of the trainee are as follows:

ROLES OF THE TRAINEE

It shall be the duty of the student to cooperate at all times with the host organization and the facilitator during the practicum program. It shall the responsibility of the student to carry out their roles as an effective trainee in OJT. The roles of the trainee are defined as follows:

as a trainee: one must be motivated, willing to accept new responsibilities and new roles as a trainee in OJT. A trainee must have the readiness to learn things at the work place and to be able to work effectively in real life situations. A trainee must do the job, carry out tasks and participate actively at work in OJT. as a subordinate: one must be willing to take orders, instructions and receive guidance, and feedback from the supervisor or the superiors; willing to assist the supervisor and peers to carry out daily routines and tasks assignments at work place.
as a learner: one must adapt to the work place, its culture and work environment; keen to operating system, practices and to acquire job knowledge, develop job skills and acquire experience. learn new processes,

a good trainee looks for work opportunities and must be dispensable at all times; the willingness to participate actively in work activities and to contribute productively. an effective trainee is a self directed learner where he himself takes the primary initiatives in planning, carrying out and evaluating his own learning experiences. an efficient trainee must be an active learner that learns from all sources such as observe, do tasks, solve problems, practice, experience, reflections, socialize and learn from the work situations and work environment.

A trainee must be proactive and willing to participate in improvement tasks or innovative projects, or contribute ideas to improve the organizational tasks and systems of works. vi. as a young adult: a trainee must seek challenges at work place for personal development, to develop confidence, maturity, self esteem; to improve communication skills to become a grown adult. A trainee must be ready psychologically and physiologically to take the roles as an adult in terms of managing of emotion, stress and time management, be responsible and accountable for own work and behavior. as a student: a trainee is still a student who has yet to complete the final semester of the academic program. Being a student, one is expected to deliver your roles and responsibilities to your advisor, faculty and the institution. A responsible student is expected to:

consult the advisor regularly for advice on the industrial training report for minimum 8 times in the semester. seek the Industrial Training Coordinator for advise on practicum problems. complete the practicum successfully. complete the industrial training report, and submit within specified time schedule. submit the training logs, evaluation forms at the end of training. secure good grades in practicum evaluation and project paper. graduate on time. keep up the good name of the faculty and the institution. uphold integrity, wok ethics and to protect confidentially of organizational information. maintain good relationship with the host organization. report back to the faculty for post practicum session and proper exit. ROLES OF THE ADVISOR A lecturer will be assigned as an advisor to student undergoing industrial training. Following are the guidelines and the roles of the advisor in advising students practicum and project paper/report:

To provide consultations to the student on the practicum and industrial training report and topic/area to be studied in the host organization. To monitor and advice student in case of problems of difficulties in industrial training such as appropriate placement and overall welfare of the trainee. To ensure student comply with all rules and guidelines of the faculty, institution and the host organization. To evaluate the students practicum and industrial training report. To submit evaluation reports A and B to the Head of Program/or Industrial Training Coordinator within the specified time datelines. To liaise with the Industrial Training Coordinator on matters arise (if applicable) pertaining to areas of concern on practicum, students and host organizations. PRACTICUM TRAINING SCOPE AND CONTENT 4.1 SCOPE OF PRACTICUM TRAINING

It shall the duty of host organization and facilitator to ensure suitable and appropriate placement of student to related operations/departments/sections or units. The scope of practicum training shall be relevant to the field of study and area of specialization of the student/trainee. It shall be the responsibility of the organizational headquarters (where applicable) in placement of students in appropriate outlets or branches with regards to academic requirements and students general safety and welfare matters. The host organization shall also provide some basic orientation or induction program pertaining to its organizational structure, products/services/operations and business to the student. The duration of practicum training shall be 20 weeks. CONTENT OF TRAINING The content and coverage of practicum shall include provision of authentic or real tasks (work activities that are of value, productive and significance to the organization) for the trainee to acquire job knowledge, skills development and work values at the work place. PRACTICUM TRAINING OUTCOMES An effective and systematic practicum training shall achieve the following intended practicum training outcomes at the end of practicum training as follows: 5.1 COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT OUTCOME

A student is expected to demonstrate the acquired knowledge, and the ability of transfer of learning to the work place. He/she should be able to demonstrate his/her learning capabilities in new tasks, work assignments and jobs. He/she should be able to exhibit elements of job knowledge and creative thinking abilities. 5.2 SKILLS DEVELOPMENT OUTCOME

A student is expected to acquire, execute and demonstrate job management skills, problem solving and analytical skills at the work place. A student is expected to develop and demonstrate his/her communication and language proficiency skills, social and human interrelations skills and work skills on the related computer or business systems. 5.3 ATTITUDINAL OUTCOME VALUES AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

A student is expected to demonstrate the right attitudes and motivation in working at the work place. He/she is expected to demonstrate quality of work and creativity; leadership qualities; flexibility and receptive to work/tasks assignments and posses time management skills. A student is also expected to demonstrate good work ethics and values; and receptive towards feedback and improvement. PRACTICUM ASSESSMENT WEIGHTAGE

A student shall be assessed on his/her performance in the industrial training as follows: Practicum Trainee Evaluation Report by Industry: REPORT A. Practicum Trainee Assessment Report by Advisor: REPORT B. REPORT A by the Facilitator in the Host Organization shall contribute 60% of the total final score. REPORT B by the Advisor in the Faculty shall contribute 40% of the total final score. REPORT C by the trainee: Trainees Evaluation on Industrial Training Program. Upon completion of the industrial training, a student is required to evaluate his own industrial training, the facilitator and the host organization. This evaluation report, REPORT C shall serve as a feedback mechanism and evaluation on the overall industrial training and the host organization and shall be reviewed by the faculty/institution for future and continual improvement.

PRACTICUM GRADE Practicum shall be graded as PASS or FAIL by the Advisor as follows: A total final score of 50 and above shall be graded as PASS. A total final score of less than 50 shall be graded as FAIL. In the event of practicum failure, it shall be the duty of the Advisor to provide justification and objective evidences to support the case.
