I.B. Thomass Life Story of Me, Segilola and other texts

Crossing The Strait

Morocco, Gibraltar and Great Britain in the 18th and 19th Centuries
James A. O. C. Brown, University of Cambridge

AfricAn studies

This volume presents an edition and translation of I.B. Thomass pioneering work, The Life-Story of Me, Segilola, first published as a series of realistic letters to a local Lagos newspaper in 192930, but now acclaimed as the first Yoruba novel.

Using new archival evidence, this book examines the links between Morocco and Gibraltar, focusing on the period around 1750-1850. It shows how these connections challenge existing assumptions about the perceived division between opposite sides of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Prophecy in the Ancient Near East

A Philological and Sociological Comparison
Jonathan Stkl, University College London

p u b l i c at i o n s

In The Letter of Mara bar Sarapion in Context Merz and Tieleman present an interdisciplinary collection of studies examining an intriguing yet neglected Syriac letter and its historical context.

The Bibliographie Raisonne zu den Indo-Ariern im Alten Orientt unifies and enlarges four bibliographies on the IndoAryans in the ancient Near East compiled by M. Mayrhofer between 1966 and 2006, now covering a time span from 1884 until 2011.

Prophecy in the Ancient Near East is the first book-length study that compares all evidence of ancient Near Eastern prophecy, focusing on the Mari texts. It re-evaluates recent scholarship and concludes that prophecy was a widespread phenomenon integrated into divination in general.

Dedicated to the memory of R.E. Emmerick
Edited by Cristina Scherrer-Schaub, University of Lausanne/cole Pratique des hautes tudes, Paris (France)

p u b l i c at i o n s

By examining various forms of historical production happening outside the mainstream of academic history in early 20th century China, this book shows how historical writings were central to the Chinese debate on the nation, elite authority, and active citizenry.

This book unravels some of the complex factors that allowed or hampered the presence of (certain aspects of) Buddhism in the regions to the north and the east of India, such as Central Asia, China, Tibet, Mongolia, or Korea.

Old Tibetan Studies, edited by Cristina Scherrer-Schaub, is an inquiry into secular and religious Old Tibetan documents from Central Asia and Tibet. The material is critically examined from different perspectives, focusing on classical disciplines (history, linguistics, lexicography, philology, codicology and diplomacy).

The Catena in Marcum

A Byzantine Anthology of Early Commentary on Mark
Edited and Translated by William R.S. Lamb, University of Cambridge

Grace and the Will According to Augustine

Lenka Karfkov, Charles University Prague

The collected essays provide a cross section of Hans-Martin Schenkes immense work in the field of New Testament, Gosticism, and Coptology that span a lifetime of scholaship in which he produced highly valued Coptic text editions as well as theological writings.

Providing the first extended English translation of the earliest anthology of patristic commentary on Marks gospel, this book provides a careful analysis of the development of this text and assesses its significance for the history of the interpretation of Marks gospel.

Tracing the gradual crystallisation of Augustines doctrine on grace in the individual periods of his thinking, this book also shows the unacceptable consequences of Augustines teaching as criticised by his Pelagian opponents.

The Letters of Symmachus: Book 1

Translated by Michele Renee Salzman, University of California at Riverside and Michael Roberts, Wesleyan University

p u b l i c at i o n s

According to the biblical image of Israels history, the time before the Israelite state can be divided into two periods: the conquest and division of the land (Joshua) and Israels self-preservation against various enemies in the now-occupied land (Judges). The description of both eras is, to be sure, largely fictitious, since the traditions recorded in these books emerged only during the period of the monarchy.

The Dead Sea Scrolls reveal a Palestinian form of Second Temple Judaism in which the seeds of Johannine Christianity may have first sprouted. Although many texts from the Judean Desert are now widely available, the Scrolls have had little part in discussions of the Johannine literature over the past several decades.

This introduction to, commentary on, and translation into English of the first book of letters by Quintus Aurelius Symmachus shows the leading orator and statesman of the fourth-century Roman Senate deeply engaged in conversation with the leading men of the empire. The book highlights the influence of the late Roman aristocracy that flourished in the century after Constantine and demonstrates that it did not become powerless in the face of the bishops and the new Christian elite.

This volume deals with the De Bry collection of voyages, one of the most monumental publications of Early Modern Europe. It analyzes the textual and iconographic changes the De Bry publishing family made to travel accounts describing Asia, Africa and America.

Studying the presence of grace in Augustines sermones ad populum preached during the period of the Pelagian controversy, this book eplores the anthropological-ethical perspective of his doctrine of grace and indicates the continuity in his reflections on grace and human freedom.

p u b l i c at i o n s

This volume collects significant new scholarship on the late Mediaeval and Early Modern Bible, engaging with the work of theologians, the devotional needs of the laity and the shape their concerns gave to the most important book of the age.

Besides the five substantial poems that Eobanus Hessus published at Erfurt in 151517, this volume offers his previously unknown Inaugural Lecture on Cicero and Plautus and the bestselling satire On the Species of Drunkards, first published anonymously in 1515.

The sources and applied work processes in Heinrich Bullingers Reformation History are analyzed in the context of the theological assumptions and methodological claims of Bullingers historiography, which are classified against the background of early modern humanist and confessional historiography.

A History of the Metallurgy of European Swords up to the 16th Century
Alan Williams, Wallace Collection, London

p u b l i c at i o n s

Drawing rigorously from fresh manuscript research this book provides a new reference tool for more than a century of the history of medieval canon law literature which will be indispensable for everybody working in this or related fields.

In England and Scotland at War, c.1296-c.1513, Andy King and David Simpkin bring together new perspectives on the AngloScottish conflict from Dunbar to Flodden. The essays focus on the military history of the wars from both sides of the border.

The sword was the most important of weapons, but relatively little has been written about its metallurgy. The results of the microscopic examination of over a hundred swords are used to tell the story of the making of swords from the first examples through the Middle Ages to the 16th century.

This study examines whether there is any rule of (customary) international law stipulating that cultural objects belonging to foreign States that are on loan for temporary exhibition are immune from seizure, or whether such a rule is emerging.

Drawing extensively on international and European law, international and national case law, as well as academic writings, this study offers a comprehensive and critical analysis on the issue of non-state actors in refugee law.

The Special Court for Sierra Leone was established through signature of a bilateral treaty between the United Nations and the Government of Sierra Leone in early 2002, making it the third modern ad hoc international criminal tribunal.

p u b l i c at i o n s

International trade is conducted mainly under the rules of the World Trade Organization. Its non-discrimination rules are of fundamental importance. In essence, they require WTO members not to discriminate amongst products of other WTO members in trade matters not to discriminate against products of other WTO members in favour of domestic products.

In spite of the undoubtedly great and rising importance of the international legislative co-operation regarding private international law, it must be remembered that no successful unification or harmonization of conflict rules has ever taken place on the universal level, and that the conflict rules stemming from international legislative co-operation between a limited number of countries give rise to the same problems as nonharmonized rules.

Since 1999, the EU has adopted legislation harmonizing many areas of immigration law, in particular rules on borders, visas, legal migration, and irregular migration. The much-enlarged and fully updated second edition of this book contains the text of and detailed commentary upon every significant measure in this field proposed or adopted up until 1 September 2011.

The much-enlarged and fully updated second edition of this book contains the text of and detailed commentary upon every significant measure in this field proposed or adopted up until 1 September 2011.

The book analyzes the role of dual nationality in different fields of the law, in particular national and EU law, and offers a convincing argument for the (minimum) harmonization of European nationality laws.

This book focuses on three European asylum procedures and the evidentiary assessment carried out in these. The interrelationship between these procedures and legal systems influencing them is explored and questions in relation to the harmonizing strivings of EU are posed.

International Court of Justice, Digest of Judgments and Advisory Opinions, Canon and Case Law 1946 - 2011
Edited by Gnther dahlhoff

This work offers ease of access to the ICJs judgments and advisory opinions given between 25 March 1949 and 22 July 2010. It seeks to help scholars, practitioners and students of international public law quickly to review the Courts jurisprudence for precedents in the Courts canon and case law. It allows the reader to read the judgments and opinions themselves, reduced to the unabbreviated and undistorted essence of the Courts reasoning. The work contains all the timeless elements of the Courts jurisprudence in one volume, and a highly detailed index of the relevant terms and phrases of the judgments and advisory opinions.

Repeatedly Shakespeare dramatizes one who prays when no one is listening, interested, or even there. This study reads the scenario parallel to early modern anxieties surrounding prayer itself, suggesting a vision of religious syncretism Shakespeare imagines for his world.

The Crescent on the Temple elucidates how the Dome of the Rock came to stand for the Temple of Solomon in Christian, Muslim, and Jewish art. That Temple, represented as the Muslim shrine, is often surmounted by a crescent.

The teaching of Kenyon, Hagin and Copeland that Jesus died spiritually (JDS) is important because of the influence of these men, not least on Pentecostalism. JDS originated with Kenyon, and has been taught in the Wordfaith movement by Hagin and Copeland, despite much criticism.

While intensive cooperation between China and the EU in the fields of energy use and environmental protection is highly needed the question remains unanswered how this cooperation could be organized. This volume puts the geopolitical implementation of energy security into the context of geoeconomic systems in a global scale. In Capital Accumulation from Migration Processes Dennis C. Canterbury explores the subject of capital accumulation and migration under neoliberal capitalism.

In Toward a Dialectic of Philosophy and Organization revolutions and revolutionary movements of the nineteenth and twentieth century are examined through the lens of the Hegelian-Marxian dialectic(s) and Marxs concept of revolutionary organization.

RE Ad E R S H IP: The book is

primarily for undergraduate and graduate students, academics, policy makers, civil society agencies and activists, and the general reader interested in the subject of capital accumulation, migration and development.

REAdERS HIP: For academics and

thinker-activists in emancipatory social movements interested in dialectical thought in Hegel and Marx and its relevance for social transformation historically and today.

An examination of the domination of neoliberal capital, showing how it renders impossible the unity of human beings dispossessed from the means of production and subsistence. Left unchallenged, capital confines large masses to a life of exploitation, domination, and bare subsistence as the majority remain divided and predisposed to infighting. RE Ad E RS HI P : All those interested in the domination of neoliberal capital over contemporary society, its theory and history, including economists, political scientists and concerned citizens.
