OriginallyfromLasVegas,DennismigratedtoHawaiiabout20yearsagoandhasbeenpaintingtheisland eversince.CosmicAirbrushiswellknownthroughoutHawaiiforwallmurals,fineart,andkustombikeand autowork. OneofCosmicsmostvisibleclientsisCutterVolkswagen.CutterhasbeenfamousinHawaiifortheir CosmicBeetleseversinceVWcameoutwiththenewbugin1998.CosmicBeetlescomewithcustom wheelsandoutofthisgalaxypaintjobslaidoutbyDennisscrew.Afterspendingaweekdoingaworkshop andpaintingsomeHarlevswithDennis,itwastimetopaintuponeofthesenotoriousCuttercosmic Beetles. Dennisgavemetotalfreedomwiththepaintjob,butIwantedittofitinwiththelocalkustoms. Coincidentally,IhavebeenworkingwithalotofretroimagesandhavealwaysbeenintriguedbyTiki Loungeculture.ManyofmylatestaluminumpaintingsattheCoproNasonGalleryinSouthernCalifornia havetakenupthistheme.SoIdecidedtopaintthisCosmicBeetleTikistyle! IwasveryhappytoseethattheBeetletheygavemewasblackitsoneofmyfavoritecarcolorsandgivesa goodcontrasttothebrightcolorsIwantedtouseintheTikimural.Plus,theblackbackgroundgivesthe samecontrastthatblackvelvetgavetoEdwardLeetegsPolynesianvelvetpaintingsmusthavethatcool retrolook!Wedecidedearlyonthattheartworkwouldbeonlyonthesidesandhood.Thiswaywecould maskofftheroof,trunk,fenden,androofpillarsattheseamssothatwhenitsdone,thepaintjobwillbe seamless.Youwontknowwhichareaswereclearedandwhichareasweleftfactory.Sowithoutanyfurther jabber,letsgettoit.

STEP1

Afterwevemaskedofftheareaswedontwanttopaint,wepreptherestbywetsandingitwith3M600grit sandpaper.Becarefulnottosandthroughthefactoryfinish.Thesandingisnecessarytoknockdownthe shinesothepaintandfinalclearwillstick.Withthesurfaceprepped,Imaskofftheentireareawith18inch transfertape.Thistapeallowsmetosketchoutmydesign,withoutdamagingtheunderlyingsurface.Iuse ablackSharpeemarkertodarkenmypencilsketchsothatIcantellwhereIneedtocutthemask. STEP2

UsinganXActoknife,IproceedtocutandpeelawaytheareasIwanttopaintfirst.IcallthissystemorI cuttingandsprayingsequentialmasking.Insteadofunmaskingandremasking,Ijustcontinuetocut,peel, andsprayuntiltheentiredesignisunmasked.Inthissystem,Ifirstunmaskandpaintthebrightest images,suchastheeyes,teeth,andbamboostyledesignborder.

STEP3

Withmyairbrush,Ibeginaddingthebasewhite(HouseofKolorBC26)tomydesign.Itisdoublereduced ina1:1ratiosothatmyairbrushwillspraywithoutanyspitting.Wheneveryourespraying,youwanttobe sureyouhaveproperventilationandwearanautomotiverespirator.Adualcartridgeactivecharcoalisthe bestchoiceforautomotivepaintsystems.Ofcourse,paintinginthemiddleofasprayboothisntbadeither. STEP4

IlayouttheentirebaseforthemuralinwhitebecauseIworkwithtransparentcolors.Whenworkingwith transparents,youneedawhitebasesothecolorsstandout.Evenopaquecolorslookbetteroverwhite. YoucanseeIhavecombinedfreehandtechniqueswiththemaskedimages.Whenitisfinished,the freehandworkwillmakeitdifficulttotellwhatwasmaskedandwhatwasnt.

STEP5:

Usingalayeringsystem,IcomeinwithmybrightestcolorandworkalongthespectrumuntilImfinished.In thiscase,thecolorisHoKLemonYellowbasecoat(SG101).Workingwithtransparentsmeansthatthe yellowwillnotbelustforthefireitwillalsodoubleasthebasecolorofthewoodandeventhepalmtrees (youknow,yellowandbluemakegreenthewholeZiplocthing!). STEP6

Inthisstep,Iwantthegreeninthepalmfrondstoreallypunchout,soinsteadofusingatransparentblue overtheyellow,IusedHoKKandyOrganicGreen(KK09).MixingthisKandyKoncentratewithsome SG100intercoatcleargivesmeanicetransparentgreenbasecoat,whichalmostlooksneonwhenthesun hitsit.Veryhip!

STEP7

IusemyHoKOrientalBlueKandytocolorthesky,horizon,andoceanbackground.Iusemostlytheblues inthebackgroundtogivethelookofnightonthewater.Thegiganticmooninthebackgroundhelpsthe imagealongtoo! Step8:

UsingacombinationofHoKKandiesRootBeerandTangerine,Icomeinwiththetopfeedairbrushand beginlayeringinthetextureinthewoodenTikifiguresaswellastheirbongos.Withthepaintstillwet,Ilike tosmearsomepartsofthewoodgrain.Thisgivesanaturalburnedgrainlookaroundknotholesandhelps addcharacter.Plus,itkeepstheotherpaintersguessingastohowyousprayedit!

STEP9

Icontinuebuildingupthecolors,detail,anddepthofthewoodgrain.Thenicethingaboutworkingwith transparentsisthatyoucanpaintwithmultiplelayersanddarkenyourimagebyaddingmorecolorwithout losingyourchroma,whichiswhathappenswhenyouaddblacktoacolortodarkenit. Step10

IcontinuetoworkwiththeRootBeerandTangerinethroughouttheentirepiece.ThisworkswellintheTiki wood,thevolcano,andevenoverthepalmfrondswhendarkeningthem.Althoughitwasnotthefirstcolor applied,thisKandywillbethedominantthemeforthispiece.

Step11:

Tofinishoffthiscolorlayer,IaddafewdropsofKandyviolettothemixtureandbeginfinishingdetailsinthe wood.Imusingthisvioletinsteadofblack.Youcanaddviolettoacolortodarkenitsvaluewithout damagingthecolor.Iusethepurevioletbyitselftoblendinthebluesandtiethewholepiecetogether. Step12:

ThefinalpaintingstepisthecompletionofthehighlightswithBC26basecoatwhiteitssortoflikecoming aroundfullcircle.Theairbrushworkswellforlargeareasaswellasfortightdetailwork.Theonlydrawback isthatIhavetoaddabout20%moreRU311reducertokeepfromspittingwhenworkingwiththetightdetail work.Idonthighlighteverything,justalittlehereandtheretomakethedesignjumpout.

STEP13

Withtheairbrushingfinished,Iunmasktheoutsideareasurroundingthebambooborder.Therestofthecar isstillmaskedoffbecausethisistheareawewillclearcoat.Toremoveallthetapeadhesive,aswellas anyoversprayorcontaminants,wipethesurfacedownwithprecleaner. Youshouldalwayswipeprecleaneroffafteryouapplyitsoitwillnotleavearesidue.Besuretotestasmall spottoseeiftheprecleaneryouusewillremoveyourairbrushing. Step14:

Tofinishoffthedesign,IcomeinandoutlinethebambooborderwithHoKLavenderstripingurethane.Using a#0linerquill,Ialsooutlinethepalmfrondsandthetwomain8Tikifigures.Thislavenderoutlinewillhelpthe objectsintheforegroundseparatethemselvesfromthebackground.(ItsanoldRenaissancefrescotrick thatsbeenroundalittlelongerthankustombugs!)

Step15

Withhighlightsandtouchupscomplete,itstimetoclearcoat.Thatmeansbustingoutthemonkeysuit andkickingalltheairbrushersoutofthespraybooth!Usingatopfeedautomotivespraygun,Dennisstop clearcoater,Will,putacoupleofnicewetcoatsofurethaneclearovertheartwork.AtKalKoncepts,we likethelwataLPH400andHouseofKolorUFC19clear. STEP16

Aftergivingtheclearagood12hourstocure,we,removethemaskingandbufftheentirevehicleto perfection.Whenremovingthefinalmasking,youmustbecarefultoremovethetapebypullingawayfrom thedesign.Ifyoupullintotheartwork,youriskpeelingorliftingtheclear,sobecareful!
