Yesenia Sierra Ms. Devaney Senior Capstone, Period 2nd 3 February 2013 MUN: The path to SUCCESS! Capstone Proposal I. Introduction As a young teenager I came across a class called Model United Nations that was based on real world problems. The United Nations came to be an international organization that was started in 1945 to aim for world peace by bringing countries together to create solutions to worldwide problems. I found myself enjoying Model UN and the thought that I would soon get to go to a simulation and meet other students who were as engaged as me. Through these conferences I knew what I wanted to do in my life which was to change the world in any way possible. Not only that but then it hit me Model UN could help any individual in any career path they decided to take. The idea was there and I began to wonder how great it would be if Model UN was a required course in schools all over the world. Then I knew that by hosting a MUN simulation I could motivate students and districts all over the world to require MUN as a course. My initial argument is Model United Nations should be a required class in schools all over the world because Model UN makes students more globally aware, it enhances their vocabulary skills, and it gives them a more diverse career choice. How does MUN help people in developing nations? Can students become more globally aware by joining MUN? Can a students vocabulary enhance after a few MUN classes? In this exciting project I will face plenty of challenges because there will be a lot of roles that I will have to cover in order to succeed. One obstacle that I will face will be motivating students to have fun in the event. I will also have to overcome the fear of speaking to large crowds since I will be speaking in the opening and closing ceremony. I will also face the obstacle of acquiring the right amount of money for the t-shirts for the volunteers. It will also be an obstacle making sure the chairs are doing their job while also helping young delegates; last but not least the obstacle I will face will be communicating the argument to people. My Capstone will satisfy the four Asia Society GPS Leadership Outcomes: Investigate the World, Recognizing Perspectives, Communicating Ideas, and Taking Action. Looking into how multiple individuals lives were impacted by MUN, while hosting a

MUN stimulation which will show why we should have MUN as a required course for students. II. Learning Objectives A. To learn how Model UN brings people together B. To learn what students see in Model UN before and after joining by creating a survey before and after the simulation C. To improve the whole idea of what Model UN does D. To learn how to organize a Model UN simulation E. To create a more diverse career choice for students by making them more globally aware, which will make them more valuable in the work place F. To encourage students to take part in MUN G. To encourage school districts to make Model UN a required course H. To learn how to build plaques I. To make-T shirts for the volunteers J. To design awards for students K. To share this capstone to school districts L. To research how MUN affects a students performance in other classes M. To research how MUN affects students performance on standardized tests Activities and Timelines Research and Writing Activity I will have my first meeting with my sponsor. I will review Capstone Sponsor requirements with sponsor I will review rubrics with sponsor I will talk with Reuter to finalize Capstone date I will review proposal with sponsor and Devaney I will turn in the finalized proposal I will draft my research argument I will review my research draft with sponsor I will present my final presentation and present it to Ms. Devaney, my sponsor, and my volunteers.

Form There will be 3 forms for my capstone. The first form will be first a college level research paper with citations included. The second form will be a visual which will be the MUN simulation itself, to encourage not just students but also districts to have MUN classes all over the world.
