CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION A. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Our world today is a society in chaos. This is according to Mr. Henry Bernardo in his book, Responding to the call of justice and love. He has mentioned in this book the social problems in our country. This includes problems in education, socio-cultural, political, and socioeconomic. But in one angle, he has emphasized that we must be in a community that power is exercised for service. Politics is the art of governance and public service (Bernardo H.L.,2008), yet now, politicians does not live out that meaning, giving them a bad image. But these politicians wont be in their positions if it werent for the voters, the Filipino people. The reign of the authorities, as well as our fate in this country depends on our hands. It is us who will be the start of making a change. In this study, the researchers would be able to know what aspects they consider in voting since election 2013 is fast approaching. They would be able to know how people think and how heavily are they influenced by the strategies of the politicians to endorse themselves to the people. Through the results of this study, the readers would be able to know how majority of the students in DLSUD, specifically in CLA, do preparations for the upcoming national elections. Discuss why you choose this topic for your re-

search paper. B. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What criteria do students of DLSU-D, particularly in CLA, consider in choosing the leaders for election 2013? 2. Will or do they accept illegal transactions from candidates? biased 3. What political traits do they find in politicians that encourage the former to vote the candidate? Replaced 4. How do they assess if the politician is telling the truth in their sworn promises during campaign period or not?

C. Significance of the Study With the upcoming 2013 Senatorial Elections, the Filipino community is, once again, in a buzz as to who they will be voting. Campaign paraphernalia are scattered everywhere, politicians enticing and convincing the masses to elect them into power. Each person has a different set of standards (or influences) they follow in preferring a certain politician. The researchers have decided to ask CLA students who are eligible to vote about the factors they consider when voting. Knowing these factors would be beneficial in the future campaigns of the candidates since they will have an idea as to what area or factor to appeal to. For instance, the survey showed that popularity is the number one factor voters look for in a candidate, and by knowing this result, the candidates might want to focus on their fame instead. Another significance of this paper is that people might come to a realisation that their standards in choosing for a candidate are somewhat biased. For example, a voter realises that he chooses a candidate based on his popularity, regardless of their contributions to the society or their concern for social change and development. If this will come to their mind, they might cross out popularity in their standard list, and go for

their other standards instead. Discuss to whom this study is significance and how it
will be significance to them.

D. Scope and Limitation Though many Filipinos are cynical of the country's politics and political system due to the continued unequal distribution of wealth, the researchers pursued to conduct this research to analyze and identify which traits or qualities of the representatives specifically affect the votes of selected Filipinos. The scope will be seventy (70) College of Liberal Arts students of De La Salle University - Dasmarinas; ten (10) for each of the seven courses whom in May 2013 will practice their right to suffrage. The information gathered from the survey will be used in determining the qualities Filipinos today seek from their future leaders in hopes that the latter will create changes to the present situation. The limitation of this study would include the decision not to gather information from voters outside the campus and beyond, considering the scale of the archilpelago and the number of actual voters on the upcoming election; but the information gathered will not be irrelevant for it will represent as a sample of the voters. Furthermore, this study seizes oppurtunity to know what area or factor individuals should appeal to if they decide to run for candidacy. Small political organizations or even the largest ones will somehow benefit from this study.

METHODOLOGY A. Population/Sample
The set of all CLA students who are registered voter for 2013 election will be the population of this study. The researchers will get 10 students from each of the 7 courses in CLA to be their target sample to lead the researchers to statistical estimates of the attributes of the whole population.

B. Sampling Technique The researchers will use stratified random sampling, specifically equal allocation in selecting the respondents. This method will allow the researchers to divide the students according to the courses that the College of Liberal Arts offers namely AB Broadcast Journalism, AB Communication, AB Community Development major in Community Psychology, AB Development Studies, AB Philosophy, AB Political Science, and AB Psychology. Then the researchers would use the simple random sampling in choosing the respondents from the set of students in each subgroup. The sample sizes coming from the seven different courses of the College of Liberal Arts are equal. The total number of respondents is 70. The total number of classes is 7. To get the equal allocation, the researchers have used the formula: Total number of respondents --------------------------------Total number of classes

Equal Allocation=

Equal Allocation=

70 -----------7

= 10

Therefore, the researchers will randomly select 10 students from each subgroup.

C. Data Gathering The researchers will use the indirect or questionnaire method where prepared closed questions would be given a written answer. The questionnaire would be presented to the selected seventy students from the College of Liberal Arts. The questions would be in a multiple-choice form which would contain choices that would answer the questions presented in the questionnaire. D. Instrumentation merge the instrumentation and data gathering The researchers will survey 70 CLA students, ten from each program, who are eligible to vote in the upcoming 2013 Senatorial Elections. The researchers will hand out one questionnaire each to the ten randomly selected students from the seven courses in the College of Liberal Arts namely: AB Broadcast Journalism, AB Communication, AB Community Development major in Community Psychology, AB Development Studies, AB Philosophy, AB Political Science, and AB Psychology. The questionnaires will contain the following closed questions:
1. Rank the following factors that affect your decision in voting for a politi-

cian, with "1" being the factor that you consider the most and "6" being the

factor that you least consider in voting for a candidate. [Popularity, Clan (political dynasty), Wealth of the candidate, Help given to his subjects (scholarship, medical assistance, etc.), Projects made and accomplished, Platforms]
2. Do you look into the candidates' educational attainment? Y/N 3. Does his/her popularity affect your vote? Y/N 4. Who/what influence you in choosing for a candidate? Check in the space

provided before each option. (Family, Friends, Political advertisments, Popularity, Projects made, Personal Opinion)
5. Which among these traits do you consider important for a politician to be

elected in power? (Wealth, Popularity, Friendliness, Charisma, Non-corruptness, Appearance, Family background)

Improve your survey questionnaire. Check carefully your survey questionnaire, if this will lead to answer your statement of the problem. Dont include question that not needed in presentation of data.

Once done surveying, the researchers will now tally the answers of the respondents and proceed to do the other parts of the paper. E. Statistical Tool Since, the type of study that the researchers will conduct is descriptive, and the type of variable that the researchers want to measure is qualitative. The population will be undergoing stratified random sampling, specifically equal allocation to obtain the ide-

al number of samples, as a choice of the researchers, which numbers to 70. The researchers will use mode to identify the factor that the respondents consider most in voting a candidate. Also, frequency distribution will be used by the researchers to identify the number and percentage of respondents who will choose the given factors appeared on the survey questionnaires. After having the tabular representation of data, the researchers will interpret the frequencies through a pie chart to show how the total quantity is distributed among a group of categories. Each piece of pie will represent the proportions of the total that fall into each category. Frequency distribution table is not a statistical tool. Think a statistic that fit to answer your objectives. Such as percentage, mean/average, ratio and propor-

tion, etc.
