by B.C. This is a list of entheogens which, according to Wikipedia are: in the strictest sense, psychoactive substances used in a religious or shamanic context. Plants and herbs have been used for many centuries in religious contexts due to their mind altering nature. In recent times many have been taken up by the casual drug user as a cheap alternative to chemical based drugs. If you have had any experiences with the following plants, be sure to tell us about it in the comments we are always interested in hearing about our readers experiences in areas like this. So, onward, the list:

10 Heavenly Blue Morning Glory Ipomoea tricolor

Active Constituents: Ergoline alkaloids This is a species of morning glory native to the New World tropics, and widely cultivated and naturalized elsewhere. The seeds have been used for centuries by many Mexican Native American cultures as an hallucinogen; they were known to the Aztecs as tlitliltzin, the Nahuatl word for black. Their traditional use by Mexican Native Americans was first discovered in 1941, brought to light in a report documenting use going back to Aztec times. It was reported in 1960 that the seeds of Ipomoea tricolor were used as sacraments by certain Zapotecs, sometimes in conjunction with the seeds of Rivea corymbosa, another species which has a similar chemical composition. Hallucinations are the predominant effect after ingesting morning glory seeds. Vivid visual and tactile hallucinations, as well as increased awareness of colors have been described. 9 Fly Agaric Mushrooms Amanita muscaria

Active Constituents: Ibotenic acid The quintessential image of an hallucinogenic toadstool, with its red cap and white spots. This fungus is native to birch, pine, spruce, fir and cedar woodlands throughout the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere. These mushrooms were widely used as a hallucinogenic drug by many of the indigenous peoples of Siberia. In western Siberia, the use of A. muscaria was restricted to shamans, who used it as an alternate method of achieving a trance state. In the east, A. muscaria was used by both shamans and common people alike, recreationally as well as religiously. Unlike the hallucinogenic mushrooms of the Psilocybe, Amanita muscaria has been rarely consumed recreationally in modern times. Depending on habitat and the amount ingested per body weight, effects can range from nausea and twitching to drowsiness, auditory and visual distortions, mood changes, euphoria, relaxation, and loss of equilibrium. Amnesia frequently results following recovery. 8 Jimson Weed, or Hells Bells Datura stramonium

Active Constituents: Atropine, hyoscyamine and scopolamine

Native to either India or Central America, it was used as a mystical sacrament in both possible places of origin. The Native Americans have used this plant in sacred ceremonies. The sadhus of Hinduism also used it as a spiritual tool, smoked with cannabis in traditional pipes. In the United States it is called Jimson Weed, Hells Bells (based on the flowers shape) or Jamestown Weed. It got this name from the town of Jamestown, Virginia, where British soldiers were secretly (or accidentally) drugged with it, while attempting to suppress Bacons Rebellion. They spent several days generally appearing to have gone insane, and failed at their mission. The effects have been described as a living dream: consciousness falls in and out, people who dont exist or are miles away are conversed with, etc, and the effects can last for days. It may be described as a real trance when a user under the effect can be awake but completely disconnected from his immediate environment. 7 Wormwood Artemisia absinthium

Active Constituents: Thujone Native to temperate regions of Europe, Asia and northern Africa, the religious association with this plant began with its strong association with the Ancient Greek moon goddess Artemis. In Hellenistic culture, Artemis was a goddess of the hunt, and protector of the forest and children. It is perhaps more famously known as the key ingredient in Absinthe, the favorite drink of 19th Century Bohemian artists. The most commonly reported Absinthe experience is a clear-headed feeling of inebriation a form of lucid drunkenness. 6 Kava Piper methysticum

Active Constituents: Kavalactones An ancient crop of the western Pacific. The word kava is used to refer both to the plant and the beverage produced from it. Kava is used for medicinal, religious, political, cultural and social purposes throughout the Pacific. These cultures have a great respect for the plant and place a high importance on it. The drink is used to this day at social gatherings to relax after work, though it has great religious significance, and is used to obtain inspiration. The effects of the drink (it is also occasionally chewed), in order of appearance, are slight tongue and lip numbing; mildly talkative and sociable behavior, clear thinking, calming effects, relaxed muscles, and a very euphoric sense of well-being.

5 Salvia, or Diviners Sage Salvia divinorum

Active Constituents: Diterpenoid known as Salvinorin A Salvia divinorum is native to certain areas in the Sierra Mazateca of Oaxaca, Mexico, where it is still used by the Mazatec Indians, primarily to facilitate shamanic visions in the context of curing or divination. Shamans crush the leaves to extract leaf juices; they usually mix these juices with water to create an infusion or tea which they drink to induce visions in ritual healing ceremonies. Salvia can be chewed, smoked, or taken as a tincture to produce experiences ranging from uncontrollable laughter to much more intense and profoundly altered states. The duration when smoked is much shorter than for some other more well-known psychedelics, and Salvia typically last for only a few minutes. The most commonly reported after-effects include an increased feeling of insight and improved mood, and a sense of calmness and increased sense of connection with nature. 4 Magic Mushrooms Psilocybin mushrooms

Active Constituents: Psilocybin and psilocin Psilocybin mushrooms have been part of human culture as far back as the earliest recorded history. Ancient paintings of mushroomed humanoids dating to 5,000 B.C. have been found in caves of Northern Algeria. Central and Southern America cultures built temples to mushroom gods and carved mushroom stones, dated to as early as 1000-500 B.C. Psilocybian mushrooms were used in ritual and ceremony among the Aztecs, served with honey or chocolate at some of their holiest events. The experience of ingestion is typically inwardly oriented, with strong visual and auditory components. Visions and revelations may be experienced, and the effect can range from exhilarating to distressing. 3 Peyote Lophophora williamsii

Active Constituents: Phenethylamine alkaloids, principally Mescaline From early records (specimens from Texas have dated from 3780 to 3660 BC), peyote has been used by indigenous peoples, such as the Huichol of northern Mexico and by various Native American tribal groups, native to or relocated to the Southern Plains States of Oklahoma and Texas. Peyote and its associated religion,

however, are fairly recent in terms of usage and practice among tribes in the Southwestern United States; Their acquisition of the peyote religion and use of peyote can be firmly dated to the early 20th Century. Typically consumed as a tea, the effects last about 10 to 12 hours. When combined with appropriate setting, peyote is reported to trigger states of deep introspection and insight, described as being of a metaphysical or spiritual nature. At times, these can be accompanied by rich visual or auditory effects. 2 Ayahuasca, or Yage

Active Constituents: Beta-carboline harmala alkaloids, MAOIs and DMT (dimethyltryptamine) Includes BOTH Ayahuasca Vine (Banisteriopsis caapi) & Chacruna Shrub (Psychotria viridis). The word Ayahuasca, translated to vine of the souls, refers to a medicinal and spiritual drink incorporating the above plants. When brewed together, and consumed in a ceremonial setting, these plants are capable of producing profound mental, physical and spiritual effects. Ayahuasca is mentioned in the writings of some of the earliest missionaries to South America. It may be considered as a particular shamanic medicinal brew, or even as an entire medicinal tradition specific to the Amazonas. The effects of the drink vary greatly based on the potency of the batch, and the setting of the ritual. They generally include hallucinogenic visions, the exact nature of which seem unique to each user. Vomiting can be an immediate side-effect, and is said to aid in purification. 1 Cannabis

Active Constituents: THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) The cannabis plant has an ancient history of ritual usage as a trance-inducing drug and is found in pharmacological cults around the world. In India, it has been engaged by itinerant sadhus (ascetics) for centuries, and in modern times the Rastafari movement has embraced it. Some historians and etymologists have claimed that cannabis was used as a religious sacrament by ancient Jews, early Christians, and Muslims of the Sufi order. Elders of the modern religious movement known as the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church consider cannabis to be the Eucharist, claiming it as an oral tradition from Ethiopia dating back to the time of Christ. Cannabis plants produce a group of chemicals called cannabinoids which produce mental and physical effects when consumed. As a drug it usually comes in the form of dried buds or flowers (marijuana), resin (hashish), or various extracts collectively known as hashish oil. The psychoactive effects of cannabis, are subjective and can vary based on the individual. Some effects may include a general change in consciousness (altered perception), mild euphoria, feelings of well-being, relaxation or stress reduction, lethargy, joviality, enhanced recollection of episodic memory, increased sensuality, increased awareness of sensation, and occasionally paranoia, agitation or anxiety. salvia i can say is the wierdest thing i have every tried, it felt like i was taking a stroke at first then i had some crazy trips where i thought i was the ocean but defo recomend it, just not for the weak minded. As for weed just ask yourself these questions, are you in control when you smoke it? yes, do you want to fight on it? no, do you offend anyone by doing things you would never dream of? no, now ask yourself the same questions but using alcohol as the drug...........( instead of smoking your drinking but lol)

I once believed all of the things that are posted here but then when I joined a cannabis forum, it showed me that most cannabis users are just ordinary people going about their daily lives without hindering anybody else as they do so.

There wasn&#039t much actual information in this article so if you are interested in learning about ayahuasca I have built an ayahuasca education page at http://www.mishkitaki.org, just follow the link that says &#039 Learn About Ayahuasca &#039 . From the ayahuasca experience to the ayahuasca retreats there are a bunch of links there where you can learn about ayahuasca from knowledgeable resources.

It should be mentioned alot of those "entheogens" are poisonous and the high is exaggerated. Stupid people might take too much and get sick waiting for some major buzz to kick in.

Salvia

I have smoked salvia a few times. I experienced some of the most amazing hallucinations and feelings after smoking this stuff. After exhaling the smoke, the effects took on almost immediately. I was thrust into a different world. I became objects. For example, my friends were watching me(highly recommended), and as they laughed, I felt my body change into a set of teeth, laughing. It is difficult to explain, I would feel as if I no longer had a human body; I would become various other objects, or become a "part" of things, like doors, walls, etc. Another time smoking it, my friend's house disintegrated before my eyes, and rebuilt itself into a human head. I was standing inside, where the "brain" would've been. Then I watched as my hand began to disintegrate as well and become part of this head. It was intense.

Apart from cannabis, i've tried magic mushrooms (shrooms) before. I drank it in a tea and really didn't know what to expect. For me it was amazing, the euphoria you get is indescribable. I'd like to try some of these other natural drugs, salvia was on my list at one point when i traveled to Canada. Unfortunately i couldn't find it.

I just grew a very light green canabis strain, so light i thought it was dying. Any ways, I put a small leaf cutlet in my bowl. I tripped out, hallucinating for about 20 minutes strong. The plant grew only three feet and it took nine months to flower, six teen weeks to rippen, two weeks to dry, and two months to cure. Yielding only two ounces, I would not trade it for a pound.

Jimson weed aka The Devils Breath that is some crazy shit. In the trance you do and act the way anyone tells you to... In Colombia they use this to steal peoples stuff (money, furniture ect...) It is like a date rape drug just a billion times worse and if you ue to much that is it you kick the bucket. The most common use on people is in a powder form just inhaling once in a powder form gets you in the trance.

After scrolling throgh all the talk about how weird things were while smoking, drinking the abovementine dplants etc... I found the initial topic kind of got lost.. hehe... the religious aspect of it... which is basically FOR the halucinatins experienced.. brought visions of a hunt, battle, victory... courage... an dmuch more, datura however, was not eaten for very long, for it was ofund that after ingesting several of the seeds, potential warriors neglected to get bup after falling to the ground.. hehe oops... they turned instead to rubbing it into their skin, inhaled the smoke from incense made from it as well as most likely a few other ways, but if those of you who have tried salvia enjoyed the effects, but are a bit nervous about it, same as with datura, (aka belladonna, aka angels trumpets along with a billion other names..hehe) as well as morning glory, clamatis... those same family-types.. try what I did.. throw a few of the flowers in a very hot bath... I used 6 clematis flowers, and the feelign was bizarre! the ergoline alkaloids contained in these plants are even absorbed through the skin, so.. same affect, none of the weirdness.. you can feel every molecule of water on your skin.. it was amazing! as well, ppl on here seem to forget the medicinal properties of said plants as well.. I use them a lot in a pain relief salve I make and literally can't keep enough in stock.. ( there are also high sedative properties to these plants as well) worked hundreds of years ago.. why would it stop now, right :) but.. read.. research.. read some more.. and if you have any doubts at all.. grab your common sense and listen to waht your head tells you.. and don't touch any of it :) also.. hehe.. a word of extreme caution.. if you

do chose to try the bath.. wear gloves when picking your angel trumpets or (if you are like myself, and have Belladonna as well).. as every part of the plant EXCEPT the booms is highly toxic and should be handled very carefully.. clematis, is not so bad.. you can handle it without much worry at all, same with morning glory. if you'd like to learn a bit about products you can use for daily healthcare.. check out my website (hehe shameless plug here) at www.earthmagyk.com Bright Blessings to you! )0(

My favorite on this list is the morning glory seed. Morning glories contain lysergic acid amides which are very similar to lysergic acid diethylamides (LSD). Each seed equals 1 mic (microgram) of acid. The most important thing is to purchase untreated seeds from one of the vendors online. Do not use commercial seeds as these are often treated with some agent that causes vomiting. The best thing about these seeds is that they are LEGAL. The way to ingest them is to grind them up in a coffee bean grinder and then soak them in purified water for 1 hour. (see The Magical & Ritual Use of Herbs-Richard Alan Miller)

I started doing shrooms a lot and started to have bad trips. I don't do them anymore becuase the bad trips really outweigh the good ones. I also tried salvia where bought from a local headshop. I believe it was 80x (i think it was pretty potent). I wasn't really prepared for just how intense it was. It felt like i had just been torn in half vertically and the two halves were trying to get away from eachother. I would not reccomend trying it. Youtube has good vids of people freaking out on salvia if anyone's interested.

My Salvia Story: Being an idiot I did it with a few friends at lunch time in the school parking lot. I watched everyone else do it first, then I smoked mine. As soon as I was peaking the school bell rang and we had to go to class.. OHHH SHIT. I lost my mind walking through the halls, super paranoid, head spins, hallucinating. Finally got to class and was still tripping out. Moral of the story: Its funer to watch other people do it than to do it yourself. I've seen people drooling, spitting, "talking through their hands" as my friend called it, trying to climb walls, etc aha

UPDATE: Sad news for Salvia research: Here's a depressing NY times article on the subject. Because Salvia's so popular for it's hallucinogenic properties, scientists may have a harder time getting support for any medical research... especially if it becomes criminalized.

That Salvia certianly sounds promising, it is still legal here in the UK too. So I will definately try it, might even try to grow it. I will check what kind of weather it needs. It is a shame about these things being illegalised, just up until a few years ago you could buy magic mushrooms over the counter in the UK. A much safer way of getting them than going picking them in the fields. To be honest I would like to give all of the above a try at least one time. I have heard mad stories about DMT, but getting something like that seems almost impossible. I have no interest in any other drugs, just hallucinagens. Wanting to explore your own mind and consciousness should not be criminalised. I will figure it out, otherwise so called 'drug tourism' is the only way around it. I might just move to Hollland for a month or 2 where they have a much more liberal society. Its a shame other countries did'nt have the same viewpoint.

geeze, lots of you people on here have tried these things. ive wanted to at least try most of them but only have had access to #1 and salvia extract (which you can just go out and buy here in san diego). thats kinda funny cause the news had a story on how it should be illegal but isnt. so of course that seeded my mind with 'hey! i should go get some!'. the same thing happened with GHB (which is now illegal here) but i got some first. woohoo as for salvia, we got 15X extract in a tin about the size of a carmex container (only about 1/4 the height) for about 40$. so, not very much. we only smoked a tiny bit at first and wow! it certainly does live up to its reputation of potent, and it hits you FAST!

reputation of potent, and it hits you FAST! i dont know if id recommend it, although i have not had a bad expierience - i can see how you easily could smoke way too much. so if youre gunna try this stuff - try a tiny, tiny bit. the after effects (for me) were those stated in this article/list. but it lasts longer than 2 minutes - id say more like 30 but is far stronger the first couple minutes (which seem like an eternity). interesting stuff

Author: Terrence McKenna Comment: I have a question regarding these plants. Where do some of you people get hold of them? I have Hell's Bells growing wild all over part of my backyard, but I never have, and never plan to, use it as anything more than a somewhat decorative plant.

I have a question regarding these plants. Where do some of you people get hold of them? Typical street dealers have typical drugs. But these plants are natural and not exactly easy to come across, where do we get them??? (I'm UK, so maybe Holland, but thats still a trip away) Do we really have to spend time growing these things ourselves. Even with the magic mushrooms, Do people get those grow-kits or is it all a matter of going into the fields and picking them? Any more info about the best places to find or get these substances would be appreciated. Thanks!

Jimson weed, as you call it , is known as Dhatura here,in India. An interesting use for it is to grind the seeds alongwith Abrus Precatorius (look it up- thats a pretty looking but V.toxic plant)seeds, mix with water and a binding agent(usu. flour).Shaped into a needle, or wrapped around a long thorn- and voila!- an assasin's weapon. It has been used to kill cows(!), in cases of village disputes etc. I really cant imagine anyone actually smoking that thing. As 37 commented, there are a helluva lot of easily accesible biological intoxicants, as well as toxins. That

So. Back in the sixties, the veritable stone-age for most of you, we did all sorts of drugs for all sorts of reasons. Fun was the most common reason. I have all kinds of good advice about safely taking drugs, but piece of advice number one covers them all. Don't! You are not immune to harm. You are not immortal Brain-damage and death are possible outcomes even for you. I had friends who, at 18, 19, 24, suffer those repercussions. They, too, thought they were immortal. They, too, thought they could get way with selfdestructive behavior without harm, as did I. My punishment is to live with the memory of my friends deaths and destruction. My punishment is being whole, and knowing they are not.

Well I have much expeirience with marijuana/cannabis smoking and i havent noticed any effect of it than , increased focus , eyes become more alert in terms of feel , good feeling , semi blurry vision on ocasion (unless its hash) and tumbling and lack of coordination on occasion ever increased coordination. Also I have expeirience with morning glory seeds ive taken anywhere between 150-1000 seeds. At 150 - 300 seeds I would say produce mild halucinations a very good body hi. 500 + seeds ive seen decent halucinations and a very great feeling body hi. (ex) i was in my friends home he has a paper mache gorilla and i walked into his living room and it said gamble! and its eyes looked to mine and that lasted for about 10 seconds and just when your not paying attention to things things get crazy. and 800-1000 seeds is strong halucinations and a very insane body hi. oh yes also eye dialation happens and increases from seed dosage in my expeirience from 100-1000 seeds 1000 seeds being you have absolutely no color in your eyes.(tripping balls)

Just wanted to reiterate something that a well-informed poster mentioned about Jimson Weed (datura): this is not something anyone should ever try to ingest in any form. In fact, while I understand that this list represents to discuss substances used in ritual ceremonies, I think it is borderline irresponsible not to append a disclaimer to the entry on Jimson Weed--it is possible that shamans had/have a method for preparing it that tempers the harmful effects. With no mention of this, having read the entry a kid might think datura was okay to experiment with, which could have tragic resuls. Jimson Weed and scopolomine in general are DELERIANTS, virtually guaranteed to cause psychotic episodes, to say nothing of their high toxicity. Any "high" is almost always followed by extreme somatic reactions--convulsions, coma and death are not uncommon. And almost always when you hear about the horror stories, they involve bored high school students who've heard that Jimson Weed can get you high...

Very interesting. I smoke canabis, and I've tried salvia once.. it's simply amazing. But not a partydrug (as any of this list in fact). I use drugs for spiritual / auto-exploration reasons.. and well, sometimes weed for listen to music :) "If you have had any experiences with the following plants, be sure to tell us about it in the comments" Well.. with Salvia, after 2 hits (10x extract) I suddenly was on an Indiana Jones movie (hehe), I could not see anything related to the movie, but all was in my mind. There "was" a tribe behind be playing music around a fire, and some caves in front. I could not speak for those 5 minutes that last the experience, it was simply amazing. It's like dreaming awake :)
