Im getting kind of tired of all these consumer bloggers
online who are just infatuated with nail polish and post
endlessly about polish and doing their own nails. I mean,
sure, they probably help increase the awareness of nail care and
new products (mostly polish), but I think its time for those of us on
the professional side of the nail world to take back our place in the
pecking order.
Theyre even starting to inltrate my side of the nail world as well I
see as many bloggers taking meetings with manufacturers and hanging
out in the press room at trade shows as I do actual journalists.
As nail technicians, YOU have the inuence over your clients to
share the latest color trends and nail styles. Who knows better than
YOU about the differences in hybrid gels and what the right treatment
for peeling nails is. Dont cede your powerful professional inuence to
a bunch of polish junkies who are looking for free handouts of the latest
collections from manufacturers. OK, thats a little harsh. But seriously,
the professional side of our industry needs to stay at the forefront and
the DIY-ers need to take a small step back.
The bloggers are the new kids on the block and everyone is fascinated
with them. So how do you get your voice heard, you ask?
As an educated and licensed nail technician you can speak to clients
on a level that the polish enthusiasts cant. You know what services
to recommend. You know what nail shape and length looks best on
each of your clients. You know how the products work and why. You
know the latest colors, the coolest appliques, and the interesting new
techniques (because you read and go to shows and follow professional
bloggers). Ive got a couple ideas to help you reclaim your position as
the nail expert.
> Start your own blog.
> Use your web page and Facebook page as a place where you can
talk to your clients about whats hot.
> If youre a nail artist, create a prole on Nail Art Gallery
(nailartgallery.nailsmag.com) and share it with your clients.
> Get in touch with the consumer press and offer your expertise for
nail style stories.
> Put your own Hot Off the Presses book together with color
swatches, nail styles, and trends youre seeing from your fellow nail
techs or in your trade magazines. Heck, put stuff you nd on blogs
and in consumer magazines in there too, but present it to your
clients as you being their go-to source for all things nail-related.
If your clients are getting the information from you, they wont have
a reason to get it elsewhere. I dont think consumer bloggers are bad,
and I certainly dont think theyre bad for our industry. Ive just been
thinking that theyre taking the nail care spotlight from those who
rightly deserve it YOU.
Move Over,
Bloggers!

WHAT DO YOU BARTER?
Editors Note: Our very own FingerNailFixer
blogger Holly Schippers posted a blog about
bartering services after bartering a set of
Shellac toenails with a hairdresser for a hair
treatment. And we asked our 60,000 Facebook
fans (www.facebook.com/nailsmag) what
kind of things theyve ever bartered. Heres
what they had to say:
Kandice Astamendi:
I have a personal trainer who I barter with.
Tera Uphaus:
I barter mani/pedis for facials once a month! Soooo worth it!
Hilary Knight OKonski:
Barter is my middle name. Im getting a logo done now for barter!
Michele Ann Galbo:
I have bartered for personal training, laser hair removal, massage, and hair services. I
just love to barter!
Sandi Tomlinson:
One time I bought a car and traded manis and pedis to pay it of. It took one year but
it was so worth it. And the customer loved it. She didnt pay for any salon services for a
whole year.
Bri McCloud:
I trade services with my friends for various things. Ive bought videos, makeup, gifts for
showers, all through barter. Why trade cash when that person is just going to give it back
to you for her service?
Patricia Knox Mullins:
Yes, I love to barter! I have bartered for clothes, tax preps, and many other things! Its
a great way to work!
Melissa Messmer-Golia:
I trade nails for my funky colored hair and cuts! I also traded nails for dog-sitting this
summer.

When she painted this years winning self-portrait, Tulsa,
Okla.-based Jing Wilson was still a student at Jenks

Day Spa, Wilson took three hours to paint her entry to

to nails, she boasts a ne arts degree from Chengdu
School of Culture and Arts in her native China. This
type of miniature work takes a lot of concentration
and pushing yourself, she says. My parents always
pushed me to rene my art. They always expected
the best from me.

Before she was a nail tech, Ena Rodriguez was a tarot-reading gypsy at
Universal Studios Orlando. Thats where she rst came across the art of
henna tattooing. I was curious so I decided to nd out more about it,
says Rodriguez. In the process I absolutely fell in love with henna (or
mehndi as its also known), its meaning, beauty, and art. All her work is
freehand, which means she doesnt use stencils.
Now a new nail tech working at Orlandos Kokopellis Salon and Spa,
shes nding out that nails and henna are remarkably complementary
services. Henna is used for celebrations and positive things
landmarks in peoples lives, like birthdays and weddings, she says. I
absolutely love the one-on-one relationship with my customer and
the opportunity to create a unique piece of art on someones skin knowing that
person is going to wear it. Through henna I have encountered wonderful and amazing
people as well as their cultures.
Now that Im a nail tech, I am able to ofer a complete package to my brides that
includes hand and foot services along with henna. Its also a natural t during the
summer when sandals beg to be worn. My goal, as my tag line reads, is Beauty at your
hands and feet.

A Postcard from the Smokies
Virtually doubling in size from the previous year, the fourth annual
Nail Tech Networking Event of the Smokies, held on June 26-27 at the
River Terrace Resort in Gatlinburg, Tenn., saw 150 attendees enjoy the 23 nail
booths and 50+ educators who demonstrated cutting edge techniques, with
many debuting new nail products. Making an appearance for the rst time
were Light Elegances Jim McConnell, as well as Haken Professionals Scott
Haken and Atwood Industries Bruce Atwood.
Attendees also welcomed competition judge Carla Collier and cover artist
Rachel Mouritsen of INM, while Masterworks Amy Becker joined in for the
fourth time. She amazed the crowd with her elaborate booth set up, complete with
chandelier and intricate colored gel designs, while Carla and Rachel did incredible,
cover-worthy nails on some lucky people, says event organizer Jill Wright. Nail
techs were thrilled by the surprise visit from OPIs John Hauk, who ventured down
to the Smoky Mountains to see what the event was all about, plus get a little R&R.
Guest speaker Janet McCormick gave a talk about medical pedicures and their
place in the salon and held a class on that subject the following day.
Next year, the event will be held in the downtown Gatlinburg Convention Center
on June 24-25. Watch for details on Facebook at Nail Tech Networking Event of
the Smokies and at www.nailtechevent.com.

coverage
For the second year in a row brush-on gel polish lines were
the talk of the nail world at Cosmoprof North America.
The game-changing nail category has steadily helped to
reinvigorate the nail industry over the last year since its
initial introduction. In addition, we saw some cool new nail
art applications and advances in the pedicure chair world.
Cosmoprof North America, held July 31-August 2 at
the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, brought more than 760
exhibitors to almost 25,000 attendees that included
importers, distributors, manufacturers, and global beauty
leaders. The show, which is a diferent format than your usual
cash-and-carry beauty show, ofers a unique opportunity for
distributors and manufacturers to connect, see new product
lines, and conduct meaningful business meetings. This year,
a new aspect to help everyone stay connected during the
show was added by using Foursquare. Prior to and during
the event, attendees and exhibitors shared where they were
on the show oor and took
advantage of show specials
that were only available to
users by checking in on their
phones or hand-held devices.
Next years show will be held

Posh Nails BK
on the road
FROM NUMBERS TO NAILS During her 10
years building a career in nance, Terri Streat
had a passion for the beauty industry. In 2010,
she redirected her path to open a salon in
Brooklyn. Armed with her business manage-
ment skills and a newly acquired license in nail
technology, Posh BK opened its doors in March
2011. Streat recruited Debra Pakeman, a long-
time friend and nail tech, who moved across the
country to help manage the salon. Pakeman is

A SALON GROWS IN BROOKLYN When
looking for a location, Streat found Crown
Heights to have many signs of revitalization: a
gentrifying area with a mix of young, old, and
new families; recent growth in small businesses;
and residents with a desire to patronize locally.
Streat answered that need with Poshs menu of
natural nail care and waxing services. Clients
are greeted by Poshs brick interior, which was
preserved from the buildings original architec-
ture. The space was designed to be familiar to
clients who live in the brownstones Brooklyn is
known for.
SANITATION AND SWEETS In her research,
Streat found that for other local nail salons,
sanitation seemed low on the list of priorities.
At Posh, every implement is double sanitized,
or disposed of, and each client leaves with a
charmingly wrapped care package including
le, pusher, and buffer. Streat opted for pipe-
less pedicure spas and the staff explains the
benets to new clients. Still, as important as
sanitation is at Posh, there is no lack of fun: the
drying counter has candy bowls, encouraging
clients to leave with a little something sweet.
> On the day I visited, Posh was the venue of
a Pretty Little Princess Spa Day. Little ladies
brought in by moms and family members
were given a complimentary manicure
or pedicure and treated to cupcakes and
refreshments. The princesses of Crown
Heights left with sparkling tiaras and
brightly colored ngers and toes.
> Streat and Pakeman are keenly aware of the
tandem relationship between marketing
and networking. Streat believes in a grass-
roots approach to reaching clients with
community events and co-op promotions.
Yet they are also aware of the part social
networking plays in the success of a new
business. Clients can follow the salon on
Twitter and like its Facebook page for
information on upcoming events, new
products, and service specials.
> The Crow Hill Community Associa-
tion provided the planter that accents
the salons storefront, one of the many
ways the 25-year-old organization shows
support for up-and-coming businesses.

These Zebras
Are Wild
If youre looking to let loose with your
nail art skills, think about trying to tame
Danalynn Stockwoods fun zebra nail
designs. The Fitchburg, Mass.-based
nail tech uses an innovative wide brush
method for making the background and
then a striper brush to paint the stripes.
1. Choose three acrylic paints, ranging
from light to dark, and place them on a
paper plate.
2. Blend the colors onto a fan brush and
apply to the nail.
3. Use a striping brush to apply the zebra
lines.
4. Add glitter between the stripes for a
sparkly efect. Finish with two coats of
top coat. >>>

If youre bored with just applying one coat of color gel and curing, try Entitys
One Color Couture Gels and its custom-mix combinations.
Educator Lorena Marquez shows how many diferent shades can be achieved
by starting with one dark color base, and then applying other Entity color gels on
top of it. The farthest right photo shows three coats of Little Black Bottle with no
layering, then the other tips use that as a base while layering on one coat of the
specied color.
1. Three coats of Little Black Bottle with no color layering.
2. Fashion French Pink.
3. Posh n Pink.
4. Ms. Fancy Pants.
5. Holo-glam It Up.
6. Under The Lights.
7. Denim Diva.
8. Posh Pixie.
9. All Made Up.
To properly layer the gels:
Cure each layer of the darker colors for three minutes in a UV Lamp or 30
seconds in an LED Light. For light to medium colors, cure each layer for two
minutes in a UV Lamp or 20 seconds in an LED Light.

I need advice on how to get dried acrylic off my nail brush. I did my frst
set of flls today but now I am wondering how to clean my brush. My friend
said soak it in acetone and then wash it really well. Could this affect my
brush or is it OK to clean it?
The best way to clean an acrylic brush is using a brush cleaner speci-
cally made for it. There are some manufacturers who make really good
ones, and that is what I use. Acrylic brushes are made of sable so you need
to make sure you dont contaminate the brush. Monomer can work well
between services, but brush cleaner does the best job.
Some acetone has small traces of oil that can contaminate the brush.
Also make sure to use only one brush for a product line; dont use it for two
different acrylic products. This goes for odorless as well. Pulling on the
bristles will also damage the brush and the shape, so make sure you dont
pull them when cleaning. If there is already dried acrylic in the brush, it is
best to purchase a new one.
Norma Sproles is an educator and guest artist for OPI.
There are many gel nail salons around where I live, meaning there are
many people with gel nails. I do acrylic nails and Im wondering if there
is a special removal method to follow for gels because I know they dont
soak off like acrylic. I have a lot of people coming to me with their gel
nails still on. Do I just thin them down as good as I can and apply the
acrylic as usual? Will the acrylic still adhere with that thin layer of gel on?
Or do I need to completely get rid of the gel and get to the natural nail
to be able to apply the acrylic?
The only removal method for a non-soak-off gel is to le it off.
To answer your next question, we know that most gels will adhere to
acrylic with the right surface texture. I personally have done this many
times. You le the gel as thinly as you can using a 150-grit le, being very
careful not to break through to the nail beneath. The existing gel surface
must be rough for the acrylic to adhere properly, if it is too smooth you take
the chance of the acrylic popping or separating from the gel that is left.
If you have broken through to the natural nail while ling and thinning
down the existing gel, stop immediately. The 150-grit is way too harsh for
the natural nail and will damage your clients nails. Make sure you do good
prep work too. Improper prep is the biggest reason for lifting.
Renee Doran is an educator for OPI.

Angel Love Nails is an organic, protein-
based gel formula that creates lovely looking
enhancements that are healthy for the natural
nail. The Angel Love gel line has a primer that is 80% organic,
a base gel that is 95% organic, and the gels are odorless and
actually promote healthy nail growth, says the company.
The line uses a clear builder, which can have pigmented
powder added to it and mixed to create any type of custom
color shade.
1. Exfoliate and shape the entire nail, then use a cotton-
tipped applicator to cleanse and prime the entire nail.
2. Brush an even amount of Base Gel on the entire nail.
3. Using a 6-watt UV lamp, ash cure the nail, putting it in
the lamp for one second, and then removing it for four
seconds, and then back in. Repeat this two to three times
then leave the nger in the lamp for approximately 30
seconds.
4. Brush an even amount of Base Gel over the entire nail.
With the bottle of Clear Builder Finish, apply a thin line
down the center of the nail, then apply a small amount on
either side of the center line.
5. Turn the nger upside down and use the brush to guide
the gel into a nice and even almond shape. Then turn the
ngernail right side up again and allow the product to self
level.
6. Repeat step three, remembering to ash the nail in the UV
lamp. After ashing, leave the nail in the light for 45 to 60
seconds, then put the lamp in the down position and cure
for four minutes.

Living the Dream
Shelena Robinson has spent 13 of
her 14 years as a nail tech working
with CND. I love being a nail
professional, she says. Ive had opportunities
that many can only dream of and I feel very
blessed to be in this industry. Its exciting,
creative, artistic, and its been a wonderful
career path.
As an educator, Shelena has had the
opportunity to travel the world. Shes also
worked New York Fashion Week for the last
seven years as part of the team responsible for
creating nail styles for the designers. We make
sure the models walk down the runway with
the 10 most beautiful accessories a girl can
have! And shes been able to provide celebrity
services at both the Oscars and the Grammys.
In addition to her many responsibilities as
an education ambassador for CND, the Crooked
River, Ore.-based tech also still works with
clients in the salon when shes home. My core
objective is to help elevate our industry on
every level we have available to us from salon
services, to education, to nail fashion and to
help make this a successful career path for
others, inspiring them to reach for the stars!
For this months cover, we asked Shelena to
create a fun variation of the rain drop technique
shown at CNDs Fashion Fusion event at the
Premiere Show in Orlando. She showed us a
bunch of cool designs, but we especially loved
the contrast of this matte black nail with CNDs
new Shellac Zillionaire.

2. Apply a thin coat of Shellac UV Base
Coat to ve nails at a time and cure for
10 seconds using the CND UV Lamp.
Repeat on other hand.
3. Apply a thin layer of Shellac UV Color
Coat in Black Pool to ve nails and
cure for two minutes in the CND UV
Lamp. Repeat on other hand.
4. Apply a second layer of Shellac UV
Color Coat in Black Pool to ve ngers
and cure for 2 minutes in the CND UV
Lamp, repeat on other hand.
5. Apply a thin layer of Shellac UV Top
Coat to ve ngers and cure for two
minutes in the CND UV Lamp. Repeat
on other hand.
6. Remove the tacky layer with 99%
isopropyl alcohol and remove the
shine from the top coat using a 180-
grit Boomerang Padded File to create
a matte nish.
7. Apply the center hourglass design in
Shellac UV Color Coat in Zillionaire to

1. Stick decals onto the nail and apply a thin strip of
adhesive tab near the cuticle extending to about
halfway up the nail toward the free edge.
2. Position the vibrating motor at the front of the
nail, off of the adhesive tab so it is free to move,
and press the wires into the adhesive tab.
3. Glue the larger blue buttery to the top of the
vibrating motor, and glue the small pink buttery
to the red wire.
4. Fasten the small battery onto the cuticle area of
the nail, into the adhesive tab to secure it.
5. The pink buttery is light enough that the red
wire supports it just above the battery. When it is
pressed down from above, bringing the red wire in
contact with the battery, the vibrating motor acti-
vates and the blue buttery shakes.

Yep, you heard right. Though not a licensed nail tech, Cy
Tymony, author of the new book Super Sneaky Uses for
Everyday Things, has created an innovative way to use
simple, small, and inexpensive electronics to make a fun and interactive
nail art design that really shakes things up.
Here is what youll need:
Full-well nail tip, 1.5-V watch battery, 1.5-V vibrating motor, exible
buttery gure, adhesive tabs, buttery ornament, buttery decals,
and nail glue. (The watch battery and vibrating motor can be found at
local electronic parts stores, and the buttery and adhesive tabs can be
found at craft stores.)
The Vibrating Motor
The vibrating motor has two wires, a blue and red. The red is applied to
the battery with an adhesive tab, and the blue is glued to the small pink
buttery. When the blue wire is pressed down on top of the battery, the
vibrating motor will shake.

Hot Toddy
As an esthetically pleasing alternative to the boring paper towel, use
new Toddy Cloths from Toddy Gear to do a quick clean-up of nail
tables or salon reception desks in between clients. The cloths come
in more than 40 vibrant prints and feature dual-sided cleaning:
plush microber material on one side to clean and a distinctively
patterned silk microber on the other side to buff and polish. The
cloths also feature an antimicrobial coating, protecting them against
microorganisms that contribute to bacteria, mold, and mildew. (Be
sure to still follow your state boards guidelines for the disinfecting
of your table.)
If clients eye your Toddy Cloth, stock them in your retail area for
sale: They are gentle enough to use on iPhones, glasses, TVs, and
more. Plus, with the new Brand Your Toddy option, you can even
imprint the smart cloths with your salons logo.

CARING Clients who are known for
nicking or smudging their
polish within minutes of
a manicure may benet from Nails in Motions Tip
Tops. These nail protectors are clipped to the ngers
before the polish step of the manicure, then ipped
over after the polish application to protect the polish
while the client digs for her wallet, nds her car keys,
or buckles her seat belt. The companys Mani-Pedi
Protection Kit includes 10 Tip Tops plus pedicure

Mani Table with the Works
When G Elizondo couldnt nd a manicure table to meet all of her specications, she
designed her own. Elizondo, who works at Radichi Salon & Spa in Las Vegas, drew
out her blueprints then had a carpenter build it out. We love how she built up, not
out, adding an extra horizontal tier to get the clean workspace she desired. This table
isnt for sale, but Elizondos happy to share her blueprints with NAILS readers for
those of you who want to get a similar table built locally. You can view her blueprints
at www.nailsmag.com/GManiTable.
CLIENTS SIDE
> The extra tier houses two UV nail lamps
(one on each side) for convenient gel curing.
> A dropped-in piece of glass thats
centered on the top tier allows clients to
see salon iers that are placed on the lower
tier, without the risk of the tech spilling
something on the ier.
> A shared footrest near the table base has
room for both the clients and the techs feet.
TECHS SIDE
> Tools such as an e-le and safety glasses are
stored on the lower tier, meaning the top work
surface is unobstructed.
> Deep drawers on the right side mean that a
tall monomer bottle can stand up (in the top
drawer) and an entire gallon of acetone can be
stored (bottom drawer).
> The entire left side is drawers, which provides
tons of storage, especially for techs who dont
have storage space elsewhere in the salon. >>>

Have a style question?
(about nail art, fashion, salon decor, etc.)
E-mail it to Sree.Roy@bobit.com and check back here for an expert answer.
What brand of acrylic paint is used for One-Stroke painting?
I love using Folkart Enamel Paints. They are strong and wont chip off
easily. They have a uffy consistency like shaving cream. You can get frosts
and metallics in these enamel paints, plus they work on glass, metal, ceramic,
mirrors, and more. But nail techs tend to like the Folkart Acrylic Paints best.
There are more metallics in the acrylic paint, plus the top coat to seal it is a
little thinner. You can purchase most colors on my site (www.dewberrycrafts.
com) or try your local craft store. These all come in 2-oz. bottles and last a
long time.
Donna Dewberry is the inventor of the One-Stroke painting technique.
If my clients want their Minx to last longer, can I seal it with a gel top coat? And
will this ruin the shiny chrome effect of the Minx?
Minx does not advocate the use of gel on top of Minx, but in my experience
it may be a wise choice in certain cases, such as if the client has very oily nails
or works a lot in water. Applying gel on top will take the shine down a bit. Its
important to have a good understanding of proper Minx application and the
importance of heat before using anything on top. It must be sold as an add-
on. Minx is marketed as needing no base or top coat. Since using gel over
Minx is not part of the Minx process you should charge more for the gel coat.
A suggested way to use gel and Minx is to consider applying gel over a clients
natural nail plate before applying Minx, in cases where there are ridges or
natural nail damage, so that there is a smooth surface to apply the Minx.
Naja Rickette is a Minx Master and lead trainer.
Ive noticed that nail ridges can show through Minx nail coatings. Are there
certain styles of Minx that I should use (or not use) on clients who have very
ridged nails?
If someone has deep ridges in the nails Minx may not cover them up. In
particular, Silver and Gold Lightning Minx is like spandex for the nail it
will show all imperfections. For clients who have ridged nails but like the
chrome look of Gold and Silver Lightning, then suggest patterns that are still
in the metallic range but that have a design that can camouage ridges or
an otherwise uneven nail plate. Some good options are the metallic shnets,
skulls, and cheetah patterns.
Naja Rickette
Do most salons that have their employees purchase matching uniforms have
each employee buy just one uniform, or do they buy multiple ones? Most of my
techs work in the salon fve days in a row.
Most salons purchase at least three sets of uniforms per full-time employee
or if they wear them ve days a week. This requires less laundering, which
allows for longer wear and a crisper, more professional-looking uniform.
Agnes Dalisay is founder and owner of Chi Couture Uniforms
(www.mychi.ca).

We love it when we nd nail techs who truly put the
art into nail art, and Fumic Sueyoshi is a true gem
in this arena. She coined herself a jewelry nailist,
and we think her nail creations rival those of any
jewelry-maker out there. Her nail art combines
color, texture, and movement to create edgy
yet elegant designs that incorporate Swarovski
crystals, feathers, charms, and the occasional real gemstone. She
runs a private salon in New York City, and you can see more of her
work at www.jewelrynailist.com.
Q Where did you get the bulk of your nail art training?
a Mostly in my native Japan. Nail art is extremely popular there,
and clients always want extra fancy embellishments. Japanese and
U.S. nail art are very diferent, so I created a fusion style.
Q Can you tell us a little about your mentor, Yukako Tanimura?
a Yukako Tanimura is a bonsai artist. She is the best Ive ever seen.
I met her in New York City while we were both traveling, and later I
visited her in Tokyo. Her talent is manifold: She makes jewelry and
nail art too. At her place, she let me try to create nail art with her
Swarovski crystal collection. I made some pieces and loved it.
Q Can you tell us about how developed your signature nail art style?
a My designs are based on what I love: combining materials and
being creative. Im always on the look-out for materials that can be
used in my art. Even while traveling, I get pieces for my new creations.
I love good quality pieces. Its very important to me how expensive
my nails look.

Welcome Wagon
Adrienne Schodtler may be too busy
at the salon to reach out personally to
each of her new neighbors in the town
of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., but Schodtler,
owner of Nails by Adrienne, employs a
service called New Neighbor to do just
that. New Neighbor receives lists of new
homeowners in the area and visits them
with a complimentary basket full of gifts
from local businesses, she says. The
cost is $3 per visit plus the cost of the
supplies put in the basket (card, service
menu, samples, etc.). My ladies average
50 visits per month. At the end of the month I receive all of the contact info for those
that have been visited so I can follow up with the residents through mail, e-mail, or
phone. She includes a coupon for a complimentary express manicure because it is
a quick and inexpensive service.
While Schodtler has found this face-to-face marketing approach efective, that
may not always be feasible. So techs can orchestrate mini mail or e-mail campaigns
by obtaining the addresses of people who have recently moved in from their local
chamber of commerce. There are also companies like Moving Targets (www.

Dont forget the fundamentals of making
a good rst impression on new clients.
These simple rules from NSIs Jessie
Burkhardt can be found in the companys
downloadable e-book Building Your Clientele in 6-9 Months: A 360
Guide
to Generating Income.
Keep a clean house: The rst thing new clients will notice is the physical
appearance of the salon, from curb appeal and signage to interior design. More
important than trendy paint colors or uber-modern furniture is cleanliness.
Dust is entirely unacceptable in a salon. All glass and mirrors should be spot-
free and nail stations should be cleaned and reorganized between services. A
more thorough cleaning is necessary on a semi-regular basis. If you cant keep
up with it on your own, consider hiring a cleaning service.
Be on time: If a client is running behind, be creative in nding ways to shorten
the service so it doesnt inconvenience your next client. If you dont work alone,
perhaps someone else can help you nish a service while you start with the next
client. You may want to institute a late policy so clients understand that if they
are so many minutes late, they may need to reschedule or change their service.
It is best to never refuse a service if you can nd another way around it. You may
have to switch her service to something that takes less time. Late clients will
appreciate your eforts and not feel they are being punished.
Consider ofering light refreshments: You can ofer light refreshments to
your clients for very little money. Were not talking about champagne and
caviar. Bottled water and cookies are perfectly ne. Just keep food and water
away from the nail product area to adhere to local health laws. If you do wish
to serve alcohol, check with your attorney or insurance agent rst to ensure
that any permits are acquired.
Adopt the three-foot rule: Never let your client get more than three feet
from your side. There is nothing worse than a client who is unfamiliar with the
layout of the salon. Point out the restrooms, so she sees how to get there from
the front door and from the work area you are using.
Make payments easy: Accept cash, checks, and credit cards. If accepting
checks makes you queasy, consider getting a check system to validate checks.
More payment options means more income for your salon or spa.
Write thank you notes: With e-mail and texts becoming the most common
forms of communication these days, a handwritten thank you note can really
impress someone. Dont stress over the wording; a simple Thank you for
visiting the salon. I loved having you and I hope you enjoyed your service.
Please come back and see us soon! will do.

Heres my card with a 50% discount offer on the back. Come see

The best advertising is me my hands and nails. I look at her and
always compliment something. It doesnt necessary have to be the
hands. It could go something like this: I like your bag and your
hands. I can see that you take care of yourself and if you want I
would love to do your manicure sometime. If shes a nail biter I
say something like; I love your bag/shoes; Im crazy for shoes and
nails. Oh I see that you may be a nail biter? Do you know, I was one
before so I know for sure I can help you quit, if you want. I give her
my card. Usually I write something on the back, giving her a 10%
discount on the first appointment or something so she feels special.
And on my business card I show her where to find pictures and
information about me and my work.

My nails are always done so I like to play hand model and whip out

Ive actually been as abrupt as Oh my gosh, your nails make me
sad! Here are some pictures of what I can do for you. And once I
actually said, Holy crap, those nails are atrocious! That was to a
client 30 years ago. I still do her nails today. But mostly I just say,
Gosh, I love the color of your nails. Is that Young Nails Purple Dawn
(or whatever)? Im usually right, then Ill ask if shes from our area
and if shes happy with her nail tech. If she says yes, then I say,
Well you should be! She does a great job! I then notice if her toes
are done and suggest she get her tech to do them and if she doesnt
do toes, Id be more than happy to assist her. Usually Ill show her
my toes. Then, if she says no shes not happy with her tech, Ill hand
her my card and tell her how amazing I am and what a wonderful
salon I have! I just small talk and feel their humor out.

Starting a nail salon amid
a slow economic climate
worried Loan Nguyen, owner
of Gloss Nail Spa. But after celebrating
its rst anniversary, she is considering
expanding. Since opening in March
2010, Nguyen has been vigorously
grooming this business into a popular
and prospering nail spot in Milwaukee.
I put money aside for about six
months just as back up to make sure
we had enough, Nguyen says. But
after only three months, we were able
to pay everything, and then from there
its only been getting better, she says.
Gloss started with ve technicians,
including Nguyen, who had been a
nail tech for 15 years before opening
the salon. Her exposure to nails came
while in college when her parents
opened a nail salon. Nails have
always been in my face, she says. The
nail spa now boasts 14 technicians, all
on commission, and an esthetician.
After nishing her bachelors degree
in business from the University of
Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Nguyen pursued
a career in real estate for several years
until marrying. After years of hearing
about her parents salon, she decided
to get her license. While starting a
family she alternated between part-
time and full-time as a nail tech.
But eventually she wanted more.
I knew I needed to branch out on
my own, she says. I was tired of
working at a salon that doesnt really
care about the clients who come
in, so I decided to open a somewhat
affordable salon that is really clean and
high-quality and is pretty modern too.
NO BOOKS TO A FULL SCHEDULE
When Nguyen started Gloss Nail Spa,
she accepted walk-ins only and had no
appointment book. That just did not
work because 20 people would walk in
salon profle

at once, and there wouldnt be enough
techs, she says. Now, the appointment
book is a priority. She says that unlike
other similarly priced salons, Gloss
is sure to get appointment clients in
on time and never takes a walk-in
rst. When we set an appointment,
we dont make them wait; a lot of our
clients appreciate that, she says. Now,
appointments make up 90% of the nail
spas customers.
Hiring technicians in those rst
six months became a seemingly
impossible mission as well. It was
hard to nd people to work, especially
as a new salon, because people dont
want to work at a place that hardly
has any clients to begin with, says
Nguyen, adding that she had to seek
out nail techs in order to keep up
with the trafc. At rst there wasnt
that much business, but from word of
mouth it grew so quickly.
Now that she has enough
technicians, scheduling them has
proven to be the most difcult task in
managing the salon, especially with
the motto of keeping appointments at
the top of the list while also accepting
walk-ins. To help keep a smooth
schedule, Nguyen emphasizes that the
techs stay within 10 minutes of the
appointment time frame. She allows
techs to make their own hours and
days to work, all the while trying to
keep gaps to a minimum. Scheduling
is denitely the hardest, says Nguyen,
who offsets this by lling in herself
when necessary.
Nguyen encourages the technicians
to build their own clientele. Normally
when you work at a salon they dont
really want you to build a clientele
because if you leave they dont want
you to take those clients with you,
she says. I tell my technicians, This
is your business even if you leave
these are still your clients.
Due to her experience as a nail tech,
Nguyen says she understands the
importance of building trust with a
client. If you leave a salon, you want to
be able to tell the clients that you will
1. With a stylish modern look, Nguyen wanted the salon to
have a unique feel and high-end look, but with traditional
prices. 2. With 10 manicure tables, a manicure bar, and
eight pedicure chairs, the clientele and 14 technicians (plus
one esthetician) are beginning to outgrow the space.

gladly take their business with you.
Nguyens clients are people she has
serviced for more than ve years.
GLOSS FOR PROFESSIONALS Most of
Gloss Nail Spas clients are working
class ladies as Nguyen calls them, who
head into the salon after their full-time
jobs. The salon is around the corner
and on the other side of the Milwaukee
River from several business centers,
but is close enough to allow for a
connection to the area. And if they are
a daytime client, they most likely work
from home, according to Nguyen.
Professional women arent the only
ones walking around the block to go
to Gloss professional males account
for 20% of the salons business. We do
have a lot of men coming in, Nguyen
says. A lot of them are professionals
who need to keep their nails clean.
She says some of the men come in on
their own the rst time, but many are
physically brought in by a woman and
some through gift certicates. A lot of
them end up liking it and keep coming
in, she says. Nguyen notes that many
clients who go to more expensive salons
end up coming back to Gloss Nail Spa,
saying they felt the service was better
and had more value for the price.
Gloss offers top professional
products, which ts for its most popular
services: the No-Chip Manicure and
Pedicure. The No-Chip Manicure is
$40, compared to the Classic Manicure
at $15. Nguyen says she carries six
lines of no-chip products, including
Hand & Nail Harmonys Gelish, OPIs
Axxium, and CNDs Shellac. She
buys new polishes almost every week
because it helps keep and bring in
clients. Im really into bringing new
things into the salon, she says.
The services are all-inclusive. You
dont get cheated, Nguyen says. We
dont charge extra for callus remover;
we try to be on top of everything and
service our clients however they feel
the most comfortable.
1. Bamboo is the theme throughout the nail spa,
highlighted by the marbled brown ooring and teal walls.
The pedicure area is tucked in the back, where the No-
Chip Pedicure costs $60 and the Classic Pedicure is
$30. 2. Appointments make up 90% of the customers,
a drastic change from when Nguyen opened the salon in
March 2010 as a walk-in only establishment.

GRABBING TRAFFIC Part of Nguyens
surprise in the quick growth of her
business is that she started Gloss in a
newly developed area, where the salon
was the rst building to open. Were
surrounded by apartment complexes
and condos on a busy street. If you drive
by fast you might miss us, she says.
Once you get into the salon, the teal
colors and earth tones matched with the
bamboo setting in the open space lend
a trendy, stylish feeling. Upon walking
into Gloss, theres an open manicure
bar and a sleek reception and waiting
area. Behind the manicure bar sit 10
manicure tables and the pedicure space,
which is set apart by bamboo and pillar-
styled walling. There is also a private
facial room.
Nguyen is looking to expand the
salon into what is currently a tness
center next door. The center is planning
to move into a nearby building
under construction in a couple years.
Meanwhile, were just trying to gure
out the maintenance and how much it
will really cost to do it, she says.
Nguyen works with local charities
to help get the business name out
there. She says the community
sometimes through a referral from a
client often asks her to participate
in different events. The salon also does
party services, such as birthdays and
wedding events.
With the recession, Nguyen says
getting other businesses in the area
has been slow, and she recognizes
development will take time. But for
now, Nguyen and staff just wish there
were more eateries around. Theres
no food! she laughs. We have to walk
at least three or four blocks down to
get food.
for $40 is popular for special
events.
Nails take precedence at
this nail spa, as there is no
retail area. If a client asks
about a particular product
used in a service, the techs
are free to sell them a
product, but they do not get
commission from retail.
Before buying too much of one
product, Nguyen puts everything
through a wear test rst. I like to
try them out before I really invest in
them, she says. All the techs use CND
for base and top coats, and clients love
OPI partially because of the frequency
of new polishes released. Gloss also
uses products from Jessica Cosmetics
and Minx Nails. The Minx manicure
The manicure bar ofers an easy space

Help Clients With Callus Control
Made to be used in the
salon or retailed as a
high-end salon item,
the new ANSR: Sole can
tackle any foot problem
from simple calluses
to extremely dry and
cracked feet, according
to the company. This
user-friendly beauty
tool features a portable,
cordless, no-slip design and is rechargeable.
Simply soak the foot in water and use the tool to gently scrub calluses with
a painless, replaceable metal le until the toughened skin is removed. Excess
particles are captured in a callus debris container, which can be removed and
washed. A silicon guard also prevents the particles from scattering everywhere,
making the entire process easy with no clean up. For thicker calluses, the company
recommends using the tool up to 10 minutes per day until the callus is reduced.
The suggested retail price is $120 and wholesale pricing is available. For more
information, visit www.nailsmag.com//21451.

I am a long-time nail enthusiast who fnally found the time to go to nail school. I
am enjoying my decision thus far, but I have found that acrylics (including odor-
less) bother my allergies and asthma. I was wondering what advice you might
have. And could I be successful offering little to no acrylic services?
> By working safely to avoid over-exposure to the products and lings or dust,
its possible to avoid aggravating these conditions, but this can be challenging if
there are pre-existing sensitivities to acrylic products. This is because all articial
nail products contain some type of acrylic and there are no exceptions. It is
certainly possible to lower inhalation exposures and prevent skin contact (e.g.
use of local source capture ventilation and gloves), but those with existing aller-
gies must avoid direct contact with the uncured product, as well as dust, lings,
and the sticky inhibition layers that form on some UV gel enhancements during
cure. I would recommend speaking to your personal physician for guidance and
advice on steps you can take to help prevent aggravating your condition.
Doug Schoon is chief scientic advisor for CND.
> You may have hit a bump in the road. Allergies are a real problem for nail
techs, and your health needs to come rst. You can try air cleaners, masks, and
different products. And even if those changes work now, they wont work for long.
That ugly monster will surface again when working with chemicals and dust. Its
just not good for someone with allergies and asthma. I am not a doctor, but I am
a nail tech and a salon owner. You need to know that you can be successful as a
natural nail artist. That would not have been true in the 90s, but in todays nail
world you can specialize in natural nail care and have the busiest salon in town
at the same time. Natural nail care also has a larger prot margin than enhance-
ment services. In this market, the price we can charge for enhancements is being
driven down. In many areas the price we can charge for a manicure is going up.
I think there is nothing more beautiful than a healthy natural nail. Dont get
discouraged. Do nails with a passion, and you will be successful.
Shari Finger is the owner of Fingers Nail Studio in W. Dundee, Ill.
Eye Care
According to the Nail
Manufacturers Council, nail
techs should use lighting bright
enough for the task, but avoid
too much glare to reduce
eyestrain. Blink frequently or
use eye drops to keep eyes
moist and occasionally look
away from your subject to
prevent eye fatigue.

Brittle Nails
Sometimes called
onychorrhexis or
onychoschizia,
brittle nails peel,
split, and break
easily.
What is it?
How do you get it?
How is it treated?
What can a tech do?
Brittle nails split, peel, and break easily. It is nearly impossible to grow nails out when they are brittle,
because once the nails have any amount of free edge, they split and break. If the nails lack moisture, as
they often do with brittle nails, its likely the skin will lack moisture as well. The skin surrounding the nails
may crack, split, and bleed.
Brittle nails are often the result of a lack of moisture. They can be caused by medical conditions such as a
thyroid problem or a hormone imbalance, but more often than not, brittle nails are caused by an interac-
tion with the environment. When fingernails are brittle, but toenails are not, theres a good chance that
the nails are brittle because they are being exposed to something that dehydrates them. Detergents,
soaps, or other allergens could cause the nails to split, but a common culprit of splitting nails is plain,
everyday water. People who are in and out of water all day long are more likely to develop brittle nails.
An unavoidable factor that contributes to brittle nails is age. The bodys ability to retain moisture begins
to change at around age 35.
Nails should be hydrated regularly. A moisturizer that contains urea is often recommended. Of course,
if the client is in a lot of water, she can wear gloves to protect her hands and nails. Other treatments
could include biotin, a B-complex vitamin that is available over the counter. The recommended dose is
2.5-3 milligrams a day for four to six months. Silica or orthosilicic acid may also help clients who suffer
from brittle nails.
Nail techs can treat brittle nails in a number of ways. The first is to work with the client, educating her
on ways to keep her hands moisturized. Techs can also offer clients in-salon moisturizing treatments,
such as paraffin, and you can sell clients hydrating products, such as your favorite cuticle oil, that
clients can use at home. Techs can create an extra-hydrating nail service and market it to clients with
brittle nails. Be sure to use a natural nail strengthener under the polish, and apply cuticle oil to clients
nails before they leave.
Applying and removing polish frequently can also dehydrate nails, causing them to become brittle.
Clients who remove their polish more than once a week may complain that their nails have begun to
split. Techs can remind clients to moisturize hands as one step in their at-home polish change. You
might recommend to clients that they soak their hands in water for a few minutes before bedtime and
then add a generous amount of moisturizer to the hands. They should then place cotton gloves over the
hands and wear them overnight.

my other life
Angelica Chavez, nail tech
In her other life: MMA fghter
Her record is 4-0 and she is rated number
two in the world right now. Angelica Chavez,
a nail tech at Hot Heads and Cool Claws in
Albuquerque, N.M., is also a professional mixed martial
arts (MMA) ghter.
My parents have owned Chavez Karate, a martial arts
school, for 38 years. I have been involved in martial arts
my entire life, says Chavez.
The type of martial arts she practices is called Kajukembo.
Its my favorite because it involves everything from judo to
jiu jitsu to boxing. Its a very practical style of martial arts.
Its geared for real life situations, she says. I denitely
use Kajukembo in every MMA ght. The ght has to be
reaction. There is no time to think and my reactions are my
Kajukembo.
Originally Chavez was considering getting into pro
boxing when she went with a teammate to some MMA
ghts. There were some girls on the card who were close
to my size, she says. After watching the ght I said, Hey
I can do that, so from there my career began.
She credits her family, including her coach and father
Melcor Chavez, with much of her success. My father is
an amazing coach and I love to learn and spend so much
time with him, she says. My mother and sister are also
high-ranking black belts in our system, so they help me a
lot too.
I love that I am a nail tech and a professional MMA
ghter. Its an awesome balance. Im as rough and tough
as a lot of guys but I am also as girly and glittery as other
gals. My teammates laugh at the fact that they cant believe
they are getting punched by a st with such glittery, bright,
shiny nails.
