The Quiet Book padded board book

Deborah Underwood, illustrated by Renata Liwska
The New York Times bestseller is now available in a cozy padded board book edition! In

silence “First look at your new hairstyle quiet.” The impossibly sweet bears, rabbits,
fish, birds, and iguanas are all rendered in soft pencils and colored digitally, and, as in
all of the best picture books, the illustrations propel the story far beyond the words.
Soft covers, rounded corners, and sturdy board book pages make this new classic the
perfect bedtime companion.

Deborah Underwood has written many books for children. She lives in San Francisco and loves
“cat sleeping on your stomach quiet” and “smelling lilacs quiet.” Visit

A Very Witchy Spelling Bee

George Shannon, illustrated by Mark Fearing
Cordelia loves to spell in every way: studying spelling and practicing spells. She
especially likes to double spell, turning her C-A-T into a new C-O-A-T by zapping it with
the letter O. So when she sees a sign for the Witches' Double Spelling Bee, she knows
it's meant just for her. Cordelia is determined to W-I-N—but so is the thirteen-time
champion Beulah Divine, age two hundred and three. Has Cordelia studied and
practiced enough to outspell the most fiendish witch at the bee?

Xander's Panda Party

Linda Sue Park, illustrated by Matt Phelan
Xander planned a panda party. Yes, a dandy whoop-de-do!
But Xander was the only panda. Just one panda at the zoo.

The zoo’s paucity of pandas doesn’t impede Xander’s party planning for long. He
decides to invite all the bears. But Koala protests. She’s not a bear—she's a marsupial!
Does that mean she can’t come? Xander rethinks his decision to invite only bears, and
“Calling all bears” evolves into “Calling all creatures.” The Newbery Medal author Linda
Sue Park introduces animal taxonomy in a wonderfully engaging way, and the
celebrated artist Matt Phelan’s charming ink and watercolor paintings are the icing on
the cake. A read-aloud whoop-de-do!

Linda Sue Park won the Newbery Medal for A Single Shard. She lives with her husband in
Rochester, New York. Visit her website at www.lspark.com.

The illustrator Matt Phelan’s books include Alice Schertle’s Very Hairy Bear and Jeanne Birdsall’s

Mr. Wuffles!
David Wiesner
In a near wordless masterpiece that could only have been devised by David Wiesner, a
cat named Mr. Wuffles doesn't care about toy mice or toy goldfish. He’s much more
interested in playing with a little spaceship full of actual aliens—but the ship wasn't
designed for this kind of rough treatment. Between motion sickness and damaged
equipment, the aliens are in deep trouble.
When the space visitors dodge the cat and take shelter behind the radiator to
repair the damage, they make a host of insect friends. The result? A humorous
exploration of cooperation between aliens and insects, and of the universal nature of
communication involving symbols, “cave” paintings, and gestures of friendship.

David Wiesner is the second person in the Caldecott Medal’s history to win the award three
times, for Tuesday (1992), The Three Pigs (2002), and Flotsam (2007), and has also received two
Caldecott Honors. He lives with his wife near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They have two children
and two cats. Visit his website at www.hmhbooks.com/wiesner.

The Wreck of the Zephyr 30th

Anniversary Edition
Chris Van Allsburg
In 1983, the Caldecott artist Chris Van Allsburg first invited young readers to consider
the wreck of a small sailboat, up on a cliff, far above the crash of the surf. How could
the Zephyr have made its way up there? And is it true that there was once a prideful boy

Grandfather's Journey 20th Anniversary

Allen Say
“At once a very personal tribute to his grandfather and a distillation of universally
shared emotions.” —Publishers Weekly, starred review

When he was a young man, Allen Say’s grandfather left his home in Japan to explore the
world. He began his journey by crossing the Pacific Ocean on a steamship, then
wandered the deserts, farmlands, and cities of North America. Allen Say lovingly tells
the story of his own family’s cross-cultural history in elegant watercolor paintings that
earned him a Caldecott Medal in 1993. This twentieth-anniversary gift edition of the
modern classic features downloadable audio and a new introduction by Allen Say.

Allen Say was born in Yokohama, Japan, and came to the United States when he was sixteen. His
many treasured books for children include Tree of Cranes, Allison, and the Caldecott Honor–
winning The Boy of the Three-Year Nap by Dianne Snyder. He lives in Portland, Oregon. Visit his

Cub's Big World

Sarah L. Thomson, illustrated by Joe Cepeda
Cub knows all about the familiar world in the snow den where she was born. When she
follows Mom out of their den, tumbling into the Arctic wilderness, she finds that the
world under the wide blue sky is big, big, BIG! It’s easy to be curious when there’s so
much to explore—and when Mom is nearby. But when she thinks she’s all alone, can
Cub be brave?
With spare, lyrical words and paintings that are both dramatic and intimate,
Cub’s Big World tells a tender story of new experiences, homecoming, and the love
between a parent and child.

My Blue Bunny, Bubbit

Maggie Smith
When the narrator of this story discovers she's going to have a new little brother, she's
not so sure she wants one. Neither is Bubbit, her very special blue wool bunny. Her
grandmother, Nonni, made Bubbit for her when she was born, so they're practically like
twins.
Soon it's time for the baby to be born. Nonni comes to stay, and she brings her
sewing box. And before long, the narrator has decided to sew her new baby brother
something almost as special as Bubbit.
Sweetly illustrated, this is the perfect book for crafty kids as well as families
expecting a new baby.

Maggie Smith is the author-illustrator of many picture books, including Christmas with the
Mousekins. My Blue Bunny is the first book she written as well as illustrated for HMH. An

Hurty Feelings
Helen Lester, illustrated by Lynn Munsinger
“The punchy story line will keep children laughing.” —School Library Journal

Fragility the hippo is solid on the outside and fragile on the inside. In every compliment,

big, squishy cupcake—since cupcakes are also nice. But soon, Rudy the bully comes
along to insult her for real. In the face of these insults, will Fragility realize the
difference between a jab and a compliment?

The Animal Book

A Collection of the Fastest, Fiercest, Toughest, Cleverest,
Shyest--and Most Surprising--Animals on Earth
Steve Jenkins
Animals smooth and spiky, fast and slow, hop and waddle through the two hundred
plus pages of the Caldecott Honor artist Steve Jenkins’s most impressive nonfiction
offering yet. Sections such as “Animal Senses,” “Animal Extremes,” and “The Story of
Life” burst with fascinating facts and infographics that will have trivia buffs breathlessly
asking, “Did you know a termite queen lays 2,000 eggs at a time?” Jenkins’s color-rich
cut- and torn-paper artwork is as strikingly vivid as ever. Rounding out this bountiful
browsers’ almanac of more than three hundred animals is a discussion of the artist’s
bookmaking process, an animal index, a glossary, and a bibliography. A bookshelf
essential!

Steve Jenkins, illustrator of more than thirty children’s books, won a Caldecott Honor for What
Do You Do with a Tail Like This? He lives in Colorado with his wife and frequent collaborator,
Robin Page, and their children. Visit his website at www.stevejenkinsbooks.com.

Sophie Scott Goes South

Alison Lester
Nine-year-old Sophie is going on a month-long voyage to Antarctica, with her dad, the
captain of an icebreaker. Sailing the frozen seas round-trip from Australia to Mawson
Station in the South Pole, Sophie recounts the adventure of a lifetime in her own words,
illustrations, and color photographs. She’ll show us icebergs, penguins, seals, and
whales! It’s a dangerous journey, but Sophie is well prepared for the thrills and chills
that await her on top of the world. This friendly, informative, and beautifully presented
picture book is based on the author’s own experiences and shows the wonder of
Antarctica through a child’s eyes.

The Children’s Laureate Alison Lester grew up on a farm overlooking the sea. She still lives in the
country and rides her horse, Woollyfoot, whenever she can. Her picture books mix imaginary
worlds with everyday life, encouraging children to celebrate the differences that make them
special. Her alter ego, Sophie Scott, was inspired by her own voyage to Antarctica as an Antarctic
Arts Fellow. Visit www.alisonlester.net.

Curious George's 5-Minute Stories
www.CostumeSpecialists.com
H. A. Rey

Curious George is fascinated by the world around him and loves having new
experiences. Curious little ones can find thirteen of George's most exciting adventures
in this treasury! March in a parade, take a ride in a rocket ship, and throw a surprise
party with George—plus so much more. A padded cover and foil accents make this
book perfect for gifting. And since each story can be read aloud in under five minutes,
this book is just right for bedtime, story time, any time you're feeling curious!

H. A. Rey and his wife, Margret, first introduced the world to the big-hearted, fun-loving
troublemaker-hero Curious George in 1941, and young readers have been in love with him ever
since. These stories have new authors and illustrators, but carry on the proud monkey tradition.

Sweet Dreams, Curious George
H. A. Rey

George is so excited about reading Chicken Little, the new book from the library! But
when George goes to sleep, he dreams that the sky is falling, just like in his book! What
is a woken-up little monkey to do in the middle of the night? Ask for another story,
jump on the bed, drink some warm milk? With the help of the man with the yellow hat
and a telescope, he finds a starry solution that will turn his scary dreams into sweet
dreams.
With art in the style of H.A. Rey and engaging yet soothing text, this book will
lull young readers into their own pleasant slumber. Includes glow-in-the-dark stickers
to help brighten up the night.

H. A. Rey and his wife, Margret, first introduced the world to the big-hearted, fun-loving
troublemaker-hero Curious George in 1941, and young readers have been in love with him ever

Angel Island
Gateway to Gold Mountain
Russell Freedman
Angel Island, off the coast of California, was the port of entry for Asian immigrants to
the United States between 1892 and 1940. Following the passage of legislation
requiring the screening of immigrants, "the other Ellis Island" processed around one
million people from Japan, China, and Korea. Drawing from memoirs, diaries, letters,
and the "wall poems" discovered at the facility long after it closed, the nonfiction
master Russell Freedman describes the people who came, and why; the screening
process; detention and deportation; changes in immigration policy; and the eventual
renaissance of Angel Island as a historic site open to visitors.
Includes archival photos, source notes, bibliography, and index.

Russell Freedman received the Newbery Medal for Lincoln: A Photobiography. He is also the
recipient of three Newbery Honors, a National Humanities Medal, the Sibert Medal, the Orbis
Pictus Award, and the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award. Mr. Freedman lives in New York City and
travels widely to research his books.

The Dolphins of Shark Bay

Pamela S. Turner
Ride alongside the author Pamela S. Turner and her scientific team and meet a cast of
dolphin characters large enough (and charismatic enough) to rival a Shakespearean
play—Puck, Piccolo, Flute, and Dodger among them. You will fall in love with this crew,
both human and finned, as they seek to answer the question: just why are dolphins so
smart? And what does their behavior tell us about human intelligence, captive animals,
and the future of the ocean? Beautiful photos of dolphins in their natural habitat and a
funny, friendly, and fast-paced text make this another winner in the Scientists in the
Field series.
Pair this with other intriguing stories of real-world science, at
www.sciencemeetsadventure.com.

Pamela S. Turner is an author, mother, and world traveler. She has written numerous books for
young readers, including the acclaimed Hachiko: The True Story of a Loyal Dog, Gorilla Doctors, A

Sea Turtle Scientist

Stephen Swinburne
Dr. Kimberly Stetwart, also known as the Turtle Lady of St. Kitts, is already waiting at
midnight when an 800-pound leatherback sea turtle crawls out of the Caribbean surf
and onto the sandy beach. The mother turtle has a vital job to do: dig a nest in which
she will lay eggs that will hatch into part of the next generation of leatherbacks. With
only one in a thousand of the eggs for this critically endangered species resulting in an
adult sea turtle, the odds are stacked against her and her offspring. Join the renowned
author and photographer Steve Swinburne on a journey through history to learn
how sea turtles came to be endangered, and what scientists like Kimberly are doing to
save them.

Steve Swinburne is an author and photographer who has published more than twenty-five
nonfiction books for young readers. He lives in Vermont with his wife and daughters. You can

Scaly Spotted Feathered Frilled

How do we know what dinosaurs really looked like?
Catherine Thimmesh
No human being has ever seen a triceratops or velociraptor or even the mighty
Tyrannosaurus rex. They left behind only their impressive bones. So how can scientists
know what color dinosaurs were? Or if their flesh was scaly or feathered? Could that
fierce T.rex have been born with spots?
In a first for young readers, the Sibert medalist Catherine Thimmesh introduces the
incredible talents of the paleoartist, whose work reanimates gone-but-never-forgotten
dinosaurs in giant full-color paintings that are as strikingly beautiful as they aim to be
scientifically accurate, down to the smallest detail. Follow a paleoartist through the
scientific process of ascertaining the appearance of various dinosaurs from millions of
years ago to learn how science, art, and imagination combine to bring us face-to-face
with the past.

Catherine Thimmesh never expected to be an author, but her books have been recognized as
New York Times Book Review Notable Books, a winner of the IRA Children’s Book Award, a Sibert
Medal winner, Outstanding Science Trade Books, and a Washington Post Top Children’s Book,
among other awards and honors. She lives with her family in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Visit

How to Catch a Bogle

Catherine Jinks
If ever a chill entered her soul, or the hope suddenly drained from her heart, she knew a bogle
was to blame. Birdie McAdam, a ten-year-old orphan, is tougher than she looks. She's
proud of her job as apprentice to Alfred the Bogler, a man who catches monsters for a
living. Birdie lures the bogles out of their lairs with her sweet songs, and Alfred kills
them before they kill her. On the mean streets of Victorian England, hunting bogles is
actually less dangerous work than mudlarking for scraps along the vile river Thames.
(See glossary!) Or so it seems—until the orphans of London start to disappear . . .

Catherine Jinks, winner of a Centenary Medal for her contribution to Australian children's
literature, is the author of many books for children of all ages, including the acclaimed Evil Genius
trilogy. She lives with her family in New South Wales, Australia. Visit her website at

Hippomobile!
Jeff Tapia
There are many stories about kid crusaders who save something, but none like this one.
With steampunk, tall tale, and just plain silly elements, the story of how ten-year-old
twins Jimmy and Stella found out about the unique vehicle called the
hippomobile, learned its history, and then used it to rescue their beloved town of
Wymore is an original variant on a tried and true theme. A cast of wildly eccentric
characters, most of whom are the twins' forty-seven grandmas and grandpas; a liberal
sprinkling of diner slang and odd colloquial phrases, many explained in footnotes; and
a sense that the events described never took place but could have are among the
surprising ingredients of this unconventional creation. The fact that there really was a
hippomobile with its own history doesn't interfere with the fun.

Jeff Tapia lived in Germany, Hungary, and the United States before settling in Austria with his
family. He works as a freelance translator and has written several plays and short stories in both
English and German. The small-town setting of Hippomobile! was inspired by his travels through
the rural Midwest and Plains states. Hippomobile! is Jeff's first novel for children.

The Sultan's Tigers

Josh Lacey
“A cracking thriller packed full of intrigue, danger and daring.” —The Observer (about
Island of Thieves)

As in the middle grade series debut Island of Thieves, scrappy twelve-year-old Tom
Trelawney and his swashbuckling Uncle Harvey are a dynamite combination—in the
dangerous, explosive sort of way. This time around, they impulsively fly from Ireland to
India in hot pursuit of a small bejeweled tiger that yet another Trelawney, a British
soldier, allegedly plundered in 1799. They’re pretty sure they can get a couple
million dollars for it too, if they can make it past a gun-happy Aussie and a pit of man-
eating tigers.

Josh Lacey, the British author of the Misfitz Mysteries and the Grk series, worked as a journalist, a
screenwriter, and a teacher before becoming a children’s book writer. A Dog Called Grk was
shortlisted for several U.K. awards and was published by Dell in the United States. He lives in

Sophie Hartley and the Facts of Life

Stephanie Greene
Sophie Hartley, age ten, does not want to be a teenager. She vows she'll never be like
her older sister, Nora, who has tantrums about her hair and almost everything else. Her
older brother Thad is preoccupied with his girlfriend of the moment and doesn't seem
to like the family anymore. No, Sophie likes being who she is right now, helping out at
home, doing art projects, and hanging out with her two best friends.
And another thing. Next year Sophie's class will see the movie about body changes,
and her classmates are already buzzing about it. Sophie doesn't want to know about
that embarrassing stuff yet. Does that mean she's immature? How can she prove
otherwise?
As usual, Sophie faces challenges and challengers with determination and
resourcefulness. With the same down-to-earth, realistic, humorous take on friendships
and family relationships praised in the three previous Sophie Hartley books, this new
story brings the indomitable Sophie a step closer to growing up without compromising
her sense of herself.

Stephanie Greene is the author of the Owen Foote books and of three previous novels about
Sophie Hartley, as well as a number of other books for children. A graduate of the MFA program
in writing for children at Vermont College, Ms. Greene lives in Durham, North Carolina.

“Delicious and satisfying.”
—New York Times Book Review about The Last Dragonslayer

Magic has been in a sad state in the Ununited Kingdom for years, but now it’s finally on
the rise, and boneheaded King Snodd IV knows it. If he succeeds at his plot, the very
future of magic will be at risk! Sensible sixteen-year-old Jennifer Strange, acting
manager of Kazam Mystical Arts Management and its unpredictable crew of sorcerers,
has little chance against the king and his cronies—but there’s no way Kazam will let go
of the noble powers of magic without a fight. A suspenseful, satirical story of
Quarkbeasts, trolls, and wizidrical crackle!

Jasper Fforde is the internationally best-selling author of the Chronicles of Kazam, the Thursday
Next mysteries, and the Nursery Crime books. He lives in Wales. Visit his website at

What the Heart Knows

Chants, Charms, and Blessings
Joyce Sidman, illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski
What the Heart Knows: Chants, Charms, and Blessings is a collection of poems to provide
comfort, courage, and humor at difficult or daunting moments in life. It conjures forth
laments, spells, invocations, chants, blessings, promises, songs, and charms. Here are
pleas on how to repair a friendship, wishes to transform one’s life or to slow down time,
charms to face the shame of a disapproving crowd, invocations to ask for forgiveness,
to understand the mysteries of happiness, and to bravely face a dark and different
world. These words help us remember or grieve; they bolster courage and guard
against evil; they help us celebrate and give thanks.

The poet extraordinaire Joyce Sidman won a Newbery Honor medal for Dark Emperor and Other
Poems of the Night and continues to write poetry for children that has been called “fresh,”
“inspiring,” and “accessible” to her young audience. She is intrigued by the idea of “words of
power”—chants and charms that were once believed to have real influence in everyday life.

The beautiful art of the Caldecott Honor–winning Pamela Zagarenski captures a world of
emotion and the essence of Sidman's words.

The Great American Dust Bowl

Don Brown
A speck of dust is a tiny thing. In fact, five of them could fit into the period at the end of
this sentence.
On a clear, warm Sunday, April 14, 1935, a wild wind whipped up millions upon
millions of these specks of dust to form a duster—a savage storm—on America's high
southern plains.
The sky turned black, sand-filled winds scoured the paint off houses and cars, trains
derailed, and electricity coursed through the air. Sand and dirt fell like snow—people
got lost in the gloom and suffocated . . . and that was just the beginning.
Don Brown brings the Dirty Thirties to life with kinetic, highly saturated, and lively
artwork in this graphic novel of one of America's most catastrophic natural events: the
Dust Bowl.

Using resonant storytelling and evocative art, Don Brown shares with his readers the excitement,
humor, pain, and joy of lives lived with passion. His work has been called "pacesetting," "carefully
crafted," "compassionate," and "forthright." He lives in New York with his family.

Swagger
Carl Deuker
Levi was simple, like a child. It was the best thing about him, and it was the worst, too.

When high school senior Jonas moves to Seattle, he is glad to meet Levi, a nice, soft-
spoken guy and fellow basketball player. Suspense builds like a slow drumbeat as
readers start to smell a rat in Ryan Hartwell, a charismatic basketball coach and sexual
predator. When Levi reluctantly tells Jonas that Hartwell abused him, Jonas has to
decide whether he should risk his future career to report the coach. Pitch-perfect
basketball plays, well-developed characters, and fine storytelling make this
heartbreaking psychological sports novel a slam dunk.

Lone Star title), and Runner (a Booklist Top 10 Sports Book). He lives with his wife and daughter
in Seattle, Washington. Visit his website at www.membersauthorsguild.net/carldeuker.

Ida M. Tarbell
The Woman Who Challenged Big Business--and Won!
Emily Arnold McCully
Born in 1857 and raised in oil country, Ida M. Tarbell was one of the first investigative
journalists and probably the most influential in her time. Working for McClure's
magazine, Tarbell wrote a series of articles on the Standard Oil Trust, a complicated
business empire run by John D. Rockefeller. Her articles revealed to the public the
underhanded, even illegal dealings that had built Rockefeller's empire and allowed it to
prosper. Later termed "muckrakers" in a speech by Theodore Roosevelt—a term
Tarbell disliked—she and her colleagues launched the practice of investigative
journalism. Achieving remarkable professional success for a woman of her generation,
Tarbell paradoxically declined to support the women's suffrage movement, a stance
that tarnished her reputation in later decades. This biography is an engrossing portrait
of a complex woman, a trailblazer in a man's world. Includes source notes,
bibliography, and index.

Emily Arnold McCully is known primarily as an artist. The illustrator of more than forty books
for young readers, she received the Caldecott Medal for Mirette on the High Wire. She is
also passionate about history, particularly on feminist subjects, and makes her YA debut with this
biography. She divides her time between Chatham, New York, and New York City.

Boston Jacky
Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber,
Taking Care of Business
L. A. Meyer
Jacky Faber makes waves, even when docked in her adopted city of Boston to attend to
the business of Faber Shipping Worldwide. With big dreams and perhaps too much
exuberance for the Puritan populace, she quickly finds herself at odds with the
Women’s Temperance Union and a town roiling over the arrival of hundreds of Irish
laborers, brought in on Jacky’s Lorelei Lee. Thwarted at every turn by her enemies,
Jacky is forced to acknowledge her shortcomings—and possibly lose her beloved Jaimy
Fletcher. In this new installment in the ever-popular Bloody Jack Adventures, will the
impulsive Jacky Faber finally get her comeuppance?

L. A. Meyer is the acclaimed writer of the Bloody Jack Adventures series, which follows the
exploits of an impetuous heroine who has fought her way up from the squalid streets of London to
become an adventurer of the highest order. He lives in a small fishing village on the coast of
Maine. Visit his website at www.jackyfaber.com.

Amy Rose Capetta
Alone was the note Cade knew best. It was the root of all her chords.

Seventeen-year-old Cade is a fierce survivor, solo in the universe with her cherry-red
guitar. Or so she thought. Her world shakes apart when a hologram named Mr. Niven
tells her she was created in a lab in the year 3112, then entangled at a subatomic level
with a boy named Xan.
Cade’s quest to locate Xan joins her with an array of outlaws—her first friends—on
a galaxy-spanning adventure. And once Cade discovers the wild joy of real connection,
there’s no turning back.

Amy Rose Capetta has an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College
of Fine Arts. She has a particle-level love of mind-bending science and all sorts of music. She
adores her small patch of universe, but also looks intently at the stars. Entangled is her first book.

Pull Down the Night

Nathan Kotecki
This year at Suburban High School is just as troubling as the last. A curly-haired girl
ghost is disrupting lives with dreaded “kiss notes,” and students are inexplicably sinking
into depression. Bruno—the new kid on the block—finds himself at the center of the
mystery when he discovers his natural map-reading abilities are actually supernatural.
When the reluctant hero isn’t engaged in cosmic battles against evil, Bruno is swooning
over the mesmerizing Celia (from The Suburban Strange) and navigating the goth
sensibilities and musical obsessions of the Rosary, her über-chic clique. A hypnotic
coming-of-age novel that chills and thrills.

Nathan Kotecki’s paranormal thriller The Suburban Strange was his first teen novel. He lives in
Durham, North Carolina. Visit his website at www.thesuburbanstrange.com.

Cy in Chains
David L. Dudley
Cy Williams, thirteen, has always known that he and the other black folks on Strong's
plantation have to obey white men, no question. Sure, he's free, as black people have
been since his grandfather's day, but in rural Georgia, that means they're free to be
whipped, abused, even killed. Almost four years later, Cy yearns for that freedom, such
as it was. Now he's a chain gang laborer, forced to do backbreaking work, penned in
and shackled like an animal, brutalized, beaten, and humiliated by the boss of the camp
and his hired overseers. For Cy and the boys he's chained to, there's no way out, no
way back.
And then hope begins to grow in him, along with strength and courage he
didn't know he had. Cy is sure that a chance at freedom is worth any risk, any sacrifice.
This powerful, moving story opens a window on a painful chapter in the history of race
relations.

David L. Dudley spent ten years as a parish pastor in the Lutheran Church before turning to
university teaching. He is currently chair of the Department of Literature and Philosophy at
Georgia Southern University, where he teaches African American literature. He has also taught
prison extension courses. His published work includes numerous articles and essays, as well as
fiction for young readers. Dr. Dudley lives in Twin City, Georgia, with his wife.

Emma's Poem
The Voice of the Statue of Liberty
Linda Glaser, illustrated by Claire Nivola
"A worthwhile addition for most collections." —School Library Journal
"Give me your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free . . . "
In 1883, Emma Lazarus, deeply moved by an influx of immigrants from eastern Europe,
wrote a sonnet that gave a voice to the Statue of Liberty.  Originally a gift from France
to celebrate our shared national struggles for liberty, the statue, thanks to Emma's
poem, came to define us as a nation that welcomes immigrants. The text of that now
famous poem, "The New Colossus," appears in this free-verse biography, illustrated in
an exquisite folk art style. "The New Colossus" is a Common Core Text Exemplar
(Grades 4-5, Poetry).

About Time
A First Look at Time and Clocks
Bruce Koscielniak
“[An]impressive history of timekeeping.”—Horn Book
Bruce Koscielniak, in this Common Core text exemplar, tells the intriguing story of the
many years spent tinkering and inventing to perfect the art of telling time. When time
itself was undefined, no one knew the difference between a minute, an hour, and a day.
Then people started creating tools to measure time. First they used the sun, the moon,
and the water, but soon after people began using their knowledge about the natural
world to build clocks and to create calendars made up of months and years. Centuries
later, we have clocks and calendars all around us!
This title has been selected as a Common Core Text Exemplar (Grades 4-5,
Informational Texts)

Bruce Koscielniak is the author and illustrator of several books for children; he is also a musician
who has played the violin and jazz guitar for many years. He lives in the Berkshires region of

The Adventures of Sir Balin the Ill-Fated

Gerald Morris, illustrated by Aaron Renier
“Lots of humor, wordplay, and numerous twists and turns.”—School Library Journal
Many years ago the great King Arthur brought justice to England with the help of his
gallant Knights of the Round Table. Though most of King Arthur’s knights freely chose a
life of duty, for Sir Balin the Ill-Fated, destiny was foretold in a prophesy. And seriously,
"ill-fated" is right there in his title, so Balin’s not surprised when things go sour. Still, no
matter how dire the task, a loyal and gallant knight never refuses adventure!

Gerald Morris lives in Wausau, Wisconsin, with his wife and three children. He is also the author
of the successful Squire’s Tales series.

Aaron Renier is the author of The Unsinkable Walker Bean. He lives in Chicago, Illinois. Visit his

Lives of the Pirates

Swashbucklers, Scoundrels (Neighbors Beware!)
Kathleen Krull, illustrated by Kathryn Hewitt
"Sensational. . . . Will excite the imaginations of [readers]."—School Library Journal

Every kid knows that pirates talk funny, swing a big sword, and seek buried treasure—
don’t they? What do we really know about Blackbeard, Madame Cheng, Sir Francis
Drake, and other men and women of pirate history? What drove them to sail the high
seas? What were their bad habits, favorite foods, and silly quirks? And did they actually
talk like that?
A lively style, lots of surprises, and solid research have made the Lives of . . . series of
collective biographies popular with both kids and adults. Now the series returns,
spanning the globe with profiles of the nineteen most notorious pirates in history.

KATHLEEN KRULL has written much innovative nonfiction for young people, including the six
previous books in the Lives of . . . series, and has made a chatty, accessible approach to biography
her hallmark. She lives in San Diego, California. www.kathleenkrull.com

KATHRYN HEWITT’s caricatures of famous figures led kids to dub the Lives of . . . series the "Big
Head" books. She has illustrated many other picture books for younger readers, some of which she

The Secret of the Yellow Death

A True Story of Medical Sleuthing
“[A] powerful exploration of a disease that killed 100,000 U.S. citizens in the 1800s.”—
Kirkus Reviews
Here is the true story of how four Americans and one Cuban tracked down a
killer, one of the world's most vicious plagues: yellow fever. Set in fever-stricken
Cuba, this book allows the reader to feel the heavy air, smell the stench of disease,
hears the whine of mosquitoes biting human volunteers during the surreal experiments.
Exploring themes of courage, cooperation, and the ethics of human experimentation,
this gripping account is ultimately a story of the triumph of science.

To research this book, Suzanne Jurmain used primary sources of memoirs, medical log books,
and documents from the doctors who were actually involved in the conquest of yellow fever. She
lives with her husband in Los Angeles and has two adult children—and one large golden retriever.

Preacher's Boy
Katherine Paterson
“A multilayered coming-of-age story of loyalty, courage, and the enduring values of
family.”—School Library Journal, starred review

1899 in a small town in Vermont, the turn of the century is coming fast. According to
certain members of Robbie's church, the end of the century might mean the end of the
world. But the church's tiresome restrictions don't suit someone as high-spirited as
Robbie. So he decides to leave the fold and live life to the fullest. His behavior does
nothing to improve his father's opinion of him. It's not until Robbie's antics put another
man's life on the line that he decides it's time to change, but is it too little too late?

Katherine Paterson has twice won the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. She received
the Hans Christian Andersen Award as well as the 2006 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award and the
2013 Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, all celebrating her body of work. She served as the National
Ambassador for Young People's Literature during 2010-2011. An active promoter of reading and

Vivian Vande Velde
"Vande Velde's takes on this fairy tale are always humorous and often
heartwarming."—Publishers Weekly, starred review

Have you ever wondered just what was going on when that odd little man with the long
name stepped up and volunteered to spin straw into gold for the miller’s daughter? If
you stop and think about it, there are some very peculiar components to the story.
Vivian Vande Velde has wondered too, and she’s come up with these six alternative
versions of the old legend. A bevy of miller’s daughters confront their perilous situation
in very different ways—sometimes comic, sometimes scary, always unexpected.

The Wild Book

Margarita Engle
“A beautiful tale of perseverance.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review

Fefa struggles with words. She has word blindness, or dyslexia, and the doctor says she
will never read or write. Every time she tries, the letters jumble and spill off the page,
leaping away like bullfrogs. How will she ever understand them?
But her mother has an idea. She gives Fefa a blank book filled with clean white
pages. "Think of it as a garden," she says. Soon Fefa starts to sprinkle words across the
pages of her wild book. She lets her words sprout like seedlings, shaky at first, then
growing stronger and surer with each new day. And when her family is threatened, it is
what Fefa has learned from her wild book that saves them.

A Fire in My Hands
Revised and Expanded Edition
Gary Soto
"These simple, free-verse selections skillfully capture that which is commonplace and
transforms it into something mesmerizing and lovely." —School Library Journal

Few writers capture the everyday moments of life like Gary Soto. In direct and vivid
poems, he draws from his own youth in California's Central Valley to portray the joys
and sorrows of young people. His writing focuses on Latino characters, yet speaks to
readers of all ethnicities. One of the poems in this collection, "Oranges", is a Common
Core State Standards Exemplar (Grades 6-8, Poetry).
Includes an introduction and an interview with the author.

Gary Soto's first book for young readers, Baseball in April and Other Stories, is a classic among
literature about Latin American young people. He has since published many novels, short stories,
plays, and poetry collections for adults and children. Mr. Soto divides his time between Berkeley,
California, and his hometown of Fresno, California. Visit his website at www.garysoto.com.

Middle Ground
Katie Kacvinsky
“Lyrical, provocative, passionate and thought-provoking.”—Kirkus Reviews

In this provocative cautionary tale for teens, the sequel to Awaken, seventeen-year-old
Maddie’s rebellion against the digital-only life grows dangerous. Maddie is in Los
Angeles, trying to stay out of trouble. But one night, a seemingly small act of defiance
lands her in the place she fears the most: a detention center. Here, patients are
reprogrammed to accept a digital existence. Maddie is now fighting for her mind, her
soul, and her very life. Once again, Katie Kacvinsky paints a disturbing picture of our
increasingly technology-based society.

Laura L. Sullivan
"Quirky, intense, moving—an exasperating gem."—Kirkus Reviews

Opening-night jitters are nothing new for seventeen-year-old Phil and her sister Fee,
who come from a centuries-old line of stage illusionists. The girls love to dazzle London
audiences, but in the aftermath of the Blitz they’re shipped off to the countryside, away

stumbles upon a hidden college of real magicians led by the devastatingly handsome
Arden, all she wants to do is persuade them to help England win the war. She’ll risk
anything to give her country a fighting chance, even if it means losing her heart . . . or
her life.

How Not to Be a Dick

An Everyday Etiquette Guide
Meghan Doherty
The rules of engagement for adolescents change rapidly from year to year and from
school to school—but there are some things that pretty much everyone needs to know:
how to behave at a party, for instance, or how to engage with someone of a different
background, or how to pass gas (“pardon me”) in a dignified manner, as the occasion
demands. Done in the retro style of the popular 1940s Dick and Jane series, this book
offers practical and helpful tips for navigating difficult social situations—conveying its
message with humor and ease.

Meghan Doherty has illustrated the forthcoming Zest books Undecided and Super Pop. She
previously wrote for the Brooklyn-based web magazine Brokelyn.com and has created websites
and posters for a variety of clients. She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.

they never thought to ask.

entry describes the period in which the heartthrob lived and includes essential stats,
hilarious sidebars, and, of course, a “crushability” ranking: a measurement of how
crush-worthy these people really are, based on their relative levels of heroism (or
villainy).

Born and raised among the sprawling cornfields of rural Pennsylvania, Kelly Murphy now writes
from her child-size apartment in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Her articles have appeared in Brokelyn,
Brooklyn Based, Chic Today, NCTE’s The Council Chronicle, and various other publications. She
currently works at Penguin in digital product marketing.

The Phobia Files

Inside Information on 50 Fascinating Fears (with Tips on
How to Face Them)
Sara Latta
Fear is a primal human emotion, and it often plays an important role in keeping us safe
from threats. It’s part of our evolutionary makeup, after all. But fears can also spiral out
of control, and if your perfectly reasonable fear of snakes swells to the point that you
run screaming from every uncoiled hose, then (news flash!) you’ve got yourself a
phobia. Phobias are as strange as they are diverse, but they actually have the power to
teach us about who we are and where we came from. Sara Latta blends biology,
psychology, history, and pop culture to provide a comprehensive account of fifty fears,
from arachnophobia to zoophobia.

Sara Latta is the author of seventeen books for children and young adults on topics that include
dark matter, the secret life of microbes, DNA, bones, and forensic science. She also has a master's
degree in immunology. She does have a bit of a phobia about heights, as she discovered when
faced with having to climb down from a pyramid in Teotihuacan, Mexico.
