Act IV

NIGHT

1. How did Olivia meet Sebastian? Sebastian was walking, when Sir Andrew, mistook him to Cesario, and drew his sword. Then Sebastian, confused, did too. Sir Toby and Sebastian came close to getting in a duel of their own, when Olivia found them, and charged them to stop. Olivia dismissed Sir Toby, and confessed Sebastian her desire to marry him, (thinking that he was Cesario) and he, who had fallen in love with her, accepted. 2. What did Sebastian do after meeting Olivia? Sebastian was debating with himself whether he was mad or whether it was the Lady Olivia; but, he recognized that it couldnt be her, because she was able to command a large household, and therefore would have to be sane and coherent. Olivia asked him to come with her to the parson and be married to her; Sebastian, even though he didnt know her and didnt know exactly what was going on, accepted, and left with her. 3. How did Duke Orsino react when he discovered that Cesario was really a woman? He approached Viola and told her he had discovered that the man, who she was in love with, was him. He also told her that he loved her like a servant but he thought he could love her like a woman and asked her to get married to him 4. How does the comedy end? Act I

1. Who are Hero and Beatrice? Hero is Leonatos daughter and Beatrice is Leonatos niece 2. What is the relationship between Don John and Don Pedro? They are illegitimate brothers 3. What impression did Hero make on Claudio? The first time he saw her he fell in love with her 4. What were Beatrice and Benedicks attitudes towards each other? They were always having arguments but, actually, they were absolutely in love with each other. 5. What did Don Pedro decide to do for Claudio at the costume party? Don Pedro decided to pose as Claudio and enchant Hero with his words of love to get she fell in love with him. 6. Why did Don John want to hurt Claudio?

Because if he was sad, nobody could be happy, and a wedding is an example of happiness. Act II 1. What did Beatrice tell Benedick at the ball? She told him that he was a fool, wasnt very talented, also that he was a clown. To sum up, she insulted him. 2. What did Don John tell Claudio about Don Pedro? He told him that Don Pedro was winning Heros heart for himself. 3. How did Claudio find out the truth about the relationship between Hero and Don Pedro? Talking to Benedick 4. How did Don John and Borachio plan to ruin Hero and Claudios wedding? Don John told Claudio and Don Pedro that he had discovered that Hero was really in love with Borachio and the night before the wedding he brought them to the garden in front of Heros window. Borachio was in Heros bedroom with Margaret, who was wearing Heros dress. Claudio thought that this situation was true and the day of the wedding he told everything that he had seen. 5. What did Don Pedro plan to do to Beatrice and Benedick? He tried them to fell in love with each other. 6. How did Don Pedro, Claudio and Leonato say to each other while Benedick was spying on them? They were talking about Hero, and they said that she was in love with Benedick. They also said that she had written a letter telling him about her love. 7. Because they heard him telling Conrade his plan to ruin the wedding Act IV 1. Why did Hero faint at the wedding? Because of the words of her future husband Claudio. 2. Why did the friar suggest that Leonato announce that Hero was dead? Because people dont value what they have until they lose it. 3. What did Beatrice ask Benedick to do? She forced him to kill Claudio 4. How did Don Pedro know about Don Johns villainy? Because Borachio told him that the plan was actually of Don John 5. How did Leonato say he would make Claudio pay for Heros death? They followed the friars plan

Act V 1. How does the comedy end? Beatrice gets married to Benedick, Claudio to Hero and they postponed the arguments with Don Jhon after the wedding.

AFTER READING ACTIVITIES 1. Describe Benedicks and Beatrices personalities. Would the trap their friends set work in real life? -Both are egomaniacs two battling, witty lovers who begin the play hating each other and end up in a different kind of loving relationship. -From my point of view it would be possible 2. Why are the circumstances and setting of the play ideal for love? Can you think of a similar set of circumstances

and setting that you and your friends could find yourselves in nowadays? Explain. -Because Shakespeare creates situations where everybody can fall in love. -For example in a party, or in an office... 3. Do you feel any sympathy for Don John? Explain. No, because he just wants to do evil and harm others 4. Imagine Benedick and Beatrice 15 years later. What will their lives be like? Will the be together? Will they have any children? Will they have changed much? Will they still be trying to outwit one another sometimes? Use future tenses. -I think that they would be happy but they also would have arguments all the time because they have the same personality. -Why not? They were in love when the story took place so I think they will be together in 15 years. -I dont know but perhaps they will have 4 children, two sons and two daughters. -From my point of view they wont change anything. -Yes, they will do that but only because they know that they are in love to each other and they do it because its funny to them. 5. Write the letters Beatrice and Benedick could have written to tell their parents about their marriage BEATRICES LETTER: Mum and Dad, Im writing to you to let you know that I married a handsome man called Benedick. I met him 2 years ago and although we were always having arguments we were in love. Ill try to visit you as soon as possible. Lots of love. BENEDICKS LETTER: Dear parents, Im writing to you to let you know that I married a pretty woman called Beatrice. I know you will thing that its impossible, because Im the gold bachelor! but its absolutely true. I met her 2 years ago and although we were always having arguments we were in love. Ill try to visit you as soon as possible. Lots of love. 6. In your opinion, what is the best episode in the play? Who is your favourite character? Is there a character or an episode you particularly dislike? Explain answers. -When Benedick and Beatrice are dancing and talking in the costume party. -My favourite character is Claudio, because he is so good and he represents true love. -Absolutely yes! I really dislike Don John because he just wants to get anyone to be happy. 7. What would you do if you found out that a person you dislike was in love with you? Would you react like Beatrice or Benedick? Explain.

Id try to say to him that I prefer him like a friend but I think I would never act like Beatrice or Benedick.

TWELFTH NIGHT & MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING 1. All comedies have happy ending. How could you change the ending of these Shakespearean comedies to turn them into tragedies? First of all Hero would have died, Benedick would have killed Claudio and finally Beatrice would have forgotten Benedick after he would have done the murder.
