Students

All-State
Band
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Marlton Sun
Four students from Cherokee
High School have been named to
the All-State Band.
The New Jersey Music Educa-
tor Association sponsors the
band, which holds auditions each
January.
According to the website, eligi-
bility is based on students' high
school region band audition re-
sults, and only those students will
be permitted to audition for All-
State Band. Each region will pres-
ent eligible students with their
All-State Band application and in-
formation after their respective
region band audition. All-State
Band audition requirements are
the same as each region high
school band audition. All-State
Orchestra winds, brass and per-
cussion selection is based on All-
State band audition results.
It puts you in an elite category
in the state, said Cherokee band
director Michael Lynch.

The Marlton Sun
Marlton soccer will introduce a
free program to Evesham Town-
ship for children with special
needs.
The program will be done in
conjunction with The Outreach
Program for Soccer, better known
as TOPSoccer.
According to the US Youth Soc-
cer website, the program is a com-
munity-based training and team
placement program for young
athletes with disabilities, organ-
ized by youth soccer association
volunteers. The program is de-
signed to bring the opportunity of
learning and playing soccer to
any boy or girl who has a mental
or physical disability. The goal is
to enable the thousands of young
athletes with disabilities to be-
come valued and successful mem-
bers of the US Youth Soccer fami-
ly.
There was a need to have it in
the area, said Barry Fitzgerald,
TOPSoccer buddy coordinator.
Its good for them to get out there
and have fun.
The program is open to kids
ages 5 to 18 from Marlton and sur-
rounding towns.
According to Fitzgerald, the
program will not focus on compe-
tition, but generating interest
from kids who want to get out
there to play.
There will be two field types to
accommodate the various needs
of participants.
There will be a grass field with
multiple nets and an asphalt
field for athletes in wheelchairs
or who need the use of a walker.
Additionally, there will be soc-
cer balls with flaps on them so
they dont roll as far and are easi-
er to control.
All of the participants will get
a jersey for coming out, said
Fitzgerald. Theyll say Marlton
Soccer on all of them.
Fitzgerald emphasized there
will not be any serious competi-
tion or teams, rather coaches and
buddies will be teaching the skills
of soccer in a fun environment.
There will be 10 trained
coaches, with two coaches as-
signed to a field, he said. Bud-
dies will be someone that is al-
ways with the kids working with
them and teaching them.
Fitzgerald is hopeful for two
buddies per player.
If 50 players come out we will
need 100 buddies, he said. Were
in the process of figuring it out.
Volunteers who come out as
buddies will be able to receive
community service hours for
school or church.
Fitzgerald plans to create an

O
ral arguments in a lawsuit
brought by professional sports
teams and the NCAA against
Gov. Christie are scheduled to begin
this week. Recently, the leagues got a
boost. The U.S. Department of Justice
is jumping into the lawsuit on their
side.
Yep, your tax dollars are being used
against you.
Lets check the starting lineups.
On one side, you have unbelievably
wealthy sports leagues, the DOJ, illegal
bookies and point-shaving players. OK,
technically the last two arent part of
the lawsuit, but, if the leagues and
DOJ win, they win, too.
On the other side, you have Gov.
Christie, people who want to be able to
bet legally on sports in New Jersey, the
states casinos and horse racing tracks
and, well, everyone who would benefit
from a huge bump to our economy.
Which side are you on?
The suggestion that legalizing sports
betting in New Jersey would lead to an
increase in corruption, law-breaking,
pestilence, whatever, defies logic and
fact. Billions of dollars already are
being bet illegally on games. Players
and officials already have been caught
cheating to win bets.
In fact, the opposite is true. Making
sports betting legal would mean more
oversight of the system by people
both government and those folks actu-
ally taking the bets who want, to coin
a phrase, a level playing field.
It also would be a boost to the casi-
nos, tracks and the economy because
at least some of the money currently
being bet illegally would begin to flow
into legal betting outlets. Anyone seen
recent casino revenue reports? They
need help.
The feds, to coin another phrase, are
backing the wrong horse. New Jersey
needs legal sports betting. Its too bad
the DOJ doesnt see things that way.
in our opinion
Your tax dollars at work
Justice Department joins the ranks of leagues against sports betting in state
Sports betting
That the federal government has
entered a lawsuit to stop New Jerseys
efforts to legalize sports betting is a
slap in the face of every taxpayer here.
Sports betting would be an economic
boost, and in no way would endanger
the integrity of the games.
Students in the Lenape Regional High
School District (LRHSD) are hard at work
on creating and launching the ambitious
2013 version of the Heads Up, Eyes For-
ward! safe driving campaign.
The campaign aims to raise awareness
about the dangers of distracted driving,
not only among their peers but among driv-
ers of all ages.
The LRHSD is among 55 school based
participants statewide selected to compete
in the Brain Injury Alliance of New Jer-
sey's Third Annual 'U Got Brains Champi-
on Schools Program a contest challeng-
ing New Jersey high school students and
teachers to develop fun and interactive
campaigns aimed at educating drivers
about the importance of safe driving.
According to John Donaldson, LRHSD
Director of Television Services, students
and advisors from all four district high
schools, Lenape, Shawnee, Cherokee and
Seneca, will be involved in the campaign as
it kicks into full gear in the next few weeks.
The 2013 campaign taps into social
media in big way.
The LRHSD Heads Up, Eyes Forward!
team asks students and community mem-
bers to like them on Facebook (www.face-
book.com/HeadsUpEyesForward) and fol-
low the campaign on Twitter (@HeadsU-
pEyesFWD) to help spread the message.
They also have a dedicated Heads Up,
Eyes Forward! YouTube page
(www.youtube.com/headsupeyesforward).
It features all of the videos created for
the LRHSD campaigns over the past two
years. The latest one, filmed last summer
by students in the LDTV Summer Work-
shop, is a parody of Carly Rae Jepsen's hit
Call Me Maybe.
Most often associated with texting or cell
phone use, distracted driving includes a
host of activities, some seemingly benign.
Eating, applying makeup, talking with
friends, or even listening to the radio are
things that can distract a driver's eyes and
mind from the road.
According to Donaldson, the first year
the Lenape Regional campaign focused on
texting.
"Last year the students changed the title
of the campaign to Heads Up, Eyes For-
ward!, because they wanted to address all
of the different forms of distracted driv-
ing," he said.

Each of the students audition
to win a chair within the section.
Students then travel to Rutgers
the weekend of Feb. 1 to rehearse
for the big performance held Feb.
21-23.
Its a celebration of the litera-
ture of the music theyre playing.
Its a celebration of their talent,
said Lynch.
The music played by members
of the All-State Band will be at
the professional level, according
to Lynch.
It's unbelievable to have the
opportunity to play among stu-
dents with such incredible talent.
Just listening to them play their
instruments is a treat, so playing
alongside them is so exciting,
said Leanne Friedman, who was
second chair for the flute. She will
be sitting 10th chair for All-State.
Friedman has been playing the
flute since the fourth grade with
eight years of experience playing
the instrument.
She couldnt be more excited
for the opportunity.
Participation in All-State has
been a goal of mine for years, so I
definitely feel a sense of accom-
plishment, she said. That being
said, I know I have to continue
pushing forward to new musical
goals in order to continue pro-
gressing.
The state band is broken up
into two categories: symphonic
and wind.
The members of the wind cate-
gory are considered to be at the
top level, said Lynch.
Its a big deal to have one girl
in the wind section, he said.
The other three should be proud
at symphonic.
In addition to Friedman, band
mate Anna Slimm, a mallet per-
cussionist, received second chair
in the wind ensemble. Marc Na-
tion and Rebecca Andrews will be
returning to the state band for a
second consecutive year.
Part of the All-State Band expe-
rience is the ability to play with a
new conductor. Past conductors
have come from the U.S. Marine
Band, college professors and
band directors from major uni-
versities.
Its a big deal to be under the
baton of someone at such a high
level, said Lynch.
Friedman is equally excited for
the opportunity to play for some-
one new.
I'm most excited about learn-
ing new takes on music from
other students and our conduc-
tor, she said.
One of Lynchs former stu-
dents, professional flutist Katie
Ambacher, made it as far as the
Eastern Band, the highest
level a musician can reach past
states.
The musicians are broken up
into East and West, since there is
no nationwide band to accommo-
date the musicians.
Currently, Lynchs former stu-
dent is coaching Friedman pri-
vately.
Its encouraging to know what
their private teachers are show-
ing them and what our school en-
semble is teaching them, said
Lynch.
She constantly gives me every
type of musical insight imagina-
ble to help improve my playing.
I've learned so much from her
about the music business, col-
leges and life as a musician,
Friedman said of her private in-
structor. In performance, I am
constantly trying to apply what
she's taught me.
Lynch is happy with his stu-
dents and their recent accom-
plishments.
Im just really proud of them
and the good name theyve given
to Cherokee, he said.

and the upcoming performance,

Evesham Fire District No. 1 is
asking for the publics support of
Evesham Fire Districts proposed
2013 operating budget at the an-
nual Fire District election to be
held on Saturday, Feb. 16.
As defined by New Jersey State
law, the polls will be open from 2
p.m. to 9 p.m. at all three of Eve-
shams fire stations.
According to a release from the
district, the fire district is asking
for the voters to approve our pro-
posed 2013 Operating Budget,
which provides for a $30,000 de-
crease in the operating budget.
The proposed budget plan will
allow us to continue to provide
superior levels of fire and emer-
gency medical services to the citi-
zens of Evesham Township.
Last year the organization an-
swered more than 1,700 calls for
fire service and over 3,600 emer-
gency medical incidents. Addi-
tionally, over 4,000 fire inspec-
tions were performed resulting in
every commercial building in
Evesham Township being in-
spected at least once.
The Evesham Fire District re-
ceives only $13,848 in state aid.
In fact, we have never relied on
any major funding from the state
to make up our annual opera-
tional budgets. Therefore, we
have not had to undergo any sig-
nificant changes in our opera-
tions to make up for reductions in
state aid.
In addition to the question on

The current aerial apparatus are
the oldest heavy trucks in the
township fleet and will be more
than 18 years old when the re-
placement apparatus arrives.
This bond referendum will
fund the replacement of these
two aging pieces of apparatus; no
new apparatus is being added to
the fleet.

Crew Wrestling Academy as well
as Intensity Wrestling while Evan
trains with the Spazz Wrestling
Club.
Next up for the two champions
is the USAW New Jersey Tourna-
ment being held in Union County,
in March.
They qualified for the event by
competing in a qualifying tourna-
ment at Buena High School Feb. 3.
It was an early start in
Williamstown for both young-
sters with a 5:30 a.m. wake-up call
and weigh-ins at 6:30 a.m. The
competition began at 8:30 a.m.
and did not finish until 3:30 p.m.
Cooper wrestled three times in
the competition, pinning each op-
ponent he faced on his way to the
73-pound crown. It was his third-
straight year winning a South
Jersey State Wrestling title. He
has, in past years, won the nation-
al Mid-Atlantic Wrestling Associ-
ation Tournament in 2010 and fin-
ished second in 2012. He also won
the USAW NJ State Tournament
in 2011 and finished second in
2012.
Wrestling requires a lot of
hard work and dedication and
Cooper loves every minute of it,
said his mother, Renee Ponte-
landolfo. As a parent, this is a
tough sport to watch but I realize
its a great character builder. Its
made him very outgoing and con-
fident.
Evan, on the other hand, had a
much more challenging journey
to his 60-pound title.
After losing his first match of
the day, he worked his way back
to the top in the double-elimina-
tion tournament by winning his
next six bouts. In his fourth
match, he beat the competitor
who gave him his opening loss.
After his fifth bout, in which he
beat the reigning South Jersey
champion, Evan faced the 2012
Eastern national champion. Evan
won 4-3 and, since it was the na-
tional champions first loss of the
day, they wrestled again and Evan
won, 5-3, for the Bantam crown.
It was nerve-wracking to say
the least, said Evans father,
Christopher J. Brown, but he
stuck to it, didnt give up and
went on to win his first title.
Along the way, he not only beat
the Eastern national champion
twice but also the current South
Jersey state champion.
My wife Dee and I couldn't be
prouder of Evan, Brown contin-
ued. Winning the state champi-
onship pales in comparison to char-
acter he demonstrated by keeping
his chin up and doing the best he
can against all of the odds.
Watching Evan's journey on
Sunday had us on the same emo-
tional roller coaster that his par-
ents were on, Renee Pontelandol-
fo said of the Brown familys
pins-and-needles day. We are so
proud of both boys and congratu-
late them on this achievement."
