TUDOR ARCHITECTURE

History:
The Tudor style house originated during the Tudor Dynasty of England in 1485- 1603 when Henry VIII, the most famous English king for building the first Protestant Church, was king. The Tudor style of architecture was influenced by the medieval style of architecture by using natural materials like wood and stone. The new Tudor houses today are called Medieval or Tudor revival.

Location:

The Tudor styled houses are most commonly found in England but have been spread to most of the British colonies.

Distinctive features:
The most distinctive features in Tudor architecture are the stucco and half timbering covering mostly the whole house, even inside of the house. Also what is distinctive on a Tudor styled house is the overlapping gables, parapets, patterned brick or stonework, steeply pitched roofs, small windows and doors, and elaborate chimneys which are commonly placed in prominent locations on the front or side of the house. Tudor houses are usually E or H shaped houses. Tudor houses are mainly two stories but it is not uncommon for there to be one story Tudor houses.

Materials:

The earliest Tudor houses were framed in oak timber and completed with a medieval construction technique known as wattle and daub. Wattle is rods or stakes interlaced with twigs or branches, and daub is a plaster, clay or other substance used for coating the wattle to make the wall and give the Tudor houses the smooth white look. The half-timbering was added just for decoration. Tile roofs are common in Tudor architecture, stone is widely used in windows and fireplaces, and floors are usually out of wood.

Design Aspects:
LinesRhythmBalance- Emphasis was on horizontal rather than vertical balance. The Tudor design was very asymmetrical to make it look more organic.

Inside Characteristics:
Tudor houses use dense materials such as wood and stone which give the interior a darker look. The colors that are usually inside of the house are dark brown, gold, red, and green. Old English houses would have tapestries, embroideries, and stained glass windows with floors made out of wood.

Reflected culture:
As coal use became more widespread the need for chimneys became greater to take away the increased smoke. Medieval, uses stone, and resources that are natural to the area (instead of rebar, concrete. etc...)

Advantages:

A Tudor is a home of rare beauty and original character and the expansive rooms can easily accommodate large families.

Disadvantages:
Tudor architecture was expensive to build, not easily replicated, and prone to maintenance issues like warping wood.
