Survey on Cyber Attitude of School Children in India (2012)

Mode of conducting the Survey The survey covered 13,050 school students (7th, 8th, 9th and 10th standards) spread across Pune, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Lucknow, Patiala, Bhatinda and Nellore. The survey was conducted in physical form with printed questionnaires being handed over to the students in class during regular school hours. Participants were gifted specially designed bookmarks based on the theme of "Cyber Security". The survey was conducted from October to December, 2012. Some of the interesting findings of the survey Some children have 14 Facebook accounts and some have 7 email accounts 42% feel it is not a crime to use pirated software in India 67% children reported having started using Facebook before the age of 10. 26% kids reported having more than 500 Facebook friends 36% kids did not know their Facebook friends in real life. 82% reported having received vulgar, offensive or abusive emails or Facebook messages.

19% of the survey participants said they spent less than 60 minutes online everyday. 63% of the survey participants said they spent 60 to 90 minutes online everyday. 18% of the survey participants said they spent more than 90 minutes online everyday. Most children reported using the Internet for either school- work or for downloading songs.

Facebook Google + Orkut Twitter


Facebook was the most popular social networking site amongst the survey participants with 86% of them saying they used it the most. Twitter came in second at 8%. Google + and Orkut came in next at 3% each.

89% participants reported that they downloaded from torrent sites. Considering that torrent sites are notorious for spreading pirated material, malware, etc., this is an alarming trend. Songs are the most popular downloaded item from torrent sites at 30%. Games were a close second at 29%. Movies came in third at 21%. Software was a distant fourth at 9%.

More than half (53%) of the surveyed children reported accessing the Internet on their phones. This indicates a high level of penetration of Internet enabled phones amongst school children in India.

A large majority (67%) of surveyed school children reported that they did not use geo-tagging on their mobile phones. Geo-tagging adds geographical information (such as latitude and longitude) to photographs, messages, posts, etc. Geo- tagging can severely impact privacy since these photographs and posts are visible online.

13% of the surveyed children admitted that they had created fake Facebook profiles of their friends. Creating fake profiles is illegal and can be punished with 2 years jail.

37% of the surveyed school children felt that a person cannot be imprisoned for hacking. 63% knew that a person can be jailed for hacking, in India. Some of these students wrote that hackers can be put in jail only if there is proof. Few felt that hacking was illegal only if some loss had been caused.

A large majority (67%) reported that they started using Facebook before 10, while the rest started using Facebook after the age of 10. According to Facebook official policy, a person must be at least 13 years of age to open a Facebook account.
