OVERVIEW
Increasing worldwide interest and participation in active sports and outdoor leisure
pursuits have resulted in strong historical growth in the consumption of textile
materials in sporting and related goods and equipment, particularly in the form of
synthetic fibres and coatings which have largely replaced traditional cotton fabrics
and other natural fibres.
The continuing pursuit of even higher standards of end-user safety and
performance is now stimulating the use of higher priced, branded speciality fibres
and other materials, supported by product promotion on a global basis, designed to
pull demand through into the mass market for sports and other related applications.
As yet, however, such products remain restricted to very small volumes in top end
applications. Larger, less sophisticated Sporttech product segments such as soft
luggage are maturing in many regions and growing only slowly.
In volume terms Sporttech is small; at less than 1 million tonnes in 2000, Sporttech
was the third smallest application area. Unit values, however, are very high,
reflecting the finished nature of what are, mostly, consumer goods and the
relatively high level of coating, high performance fibre and other added value items.
As a result of this high unit value, in 2000 Sporttech was the second largest
segment, valued at US$13.9 billion.

Exhibit 13.1 describes the steady long term growth trend for Sporttech; in the
shorter term, although demand for sporting equipment is less affected by cyclical
downturns than many other areas, the market is forecast to grow only slowly
between 2000 and 2002 before accelerating to trend between 2002 and 2004 (see
Exhibit 13.2).

13.4.3
Sailcloth
Traditional sail fabrics such as linen and cotton have now largely been replaced by
synthetic fibres; traditional canvas materials are not suitable for use on large yachts
since they would be too heavy. The majority of sails are produced from resinimpregnated woven filament polyester, which offers lighter and stronger fabrics
with reduced stretch, allowing the aerodynamic shape of the sails to be maintained
for longer. Nylon is used in spinnakers where more stretch is desirable.
At the top end of the racing market, there has been increased use of high
performance fibres such as Dyneema and Vectran which provide strength but have
higher UV resistance than aramids. The use of laminates such as Mylar, used for
stabilisation, has also increased.
13.4.4
Air-sport fabrics
Air-sport fabrics include those materials used in balloons, paragliders, kites,
parachutes and other similar products. This market covers a wide range of fabrics
and suppliers, ranging from high performance balloon fabrics under the control of a
very small number of manufacturers, to kite fabrics for which there are a large
number of manufacturers, many of whom are importing loomstate fabrics of a
lesser performance from the Far East.
13.4
2003
The need to absorb the shock of sudden deployment requires that parachutes are
made from fine filament polyamide woven fabrics, which provide the necessary
degree of stretch. Historically, high tenacity nylon 66 has also been used for
aerofoils of paragliders, providing a high degree of durability, resistance to tearing
and low porosity. Allegedly better performing aerofoil fabrics, with low elongation
and better UV resistance, are available using high tenacity polyester, with or
without a film laminate to minimise porosity.
The fabrics used in the production of balloons are primarily PU-coated polyamide.
Fabric panels nearest the gas burners are often made from meta-aramid fibres, such
as Nomex.
13.4.5
Ropes
Ropes and cords are used in a number of sporting applications including sailing,
ballooning, paragliding, climbing and abseiling. Performance is often critical and a
number of high performance fibres such as aramids, ultra-high molecular weight
polyethylene (UHMPE) and Liquid Crystal Polymer are used, normally in braided
multifilament form, as well as various grades of polypropylene, polyester and nylon.
For example, a climbing rope may involve a polypropylene core wrapped in a
polyamide sheath for abrasion resistance. Similarly, a high performing paraglider
may be fitted with lanyards made from Kevlar with a diameter as small as 1.3 mm,
sheathed with polyester or nylon for added protection and colour-coding potential.
Phosphorescent fibres are sometimes used in underwater ropes.
13.4.6
Equipment composites
There are a wide variety of applications for composites used in sporting and leisure
goods, including skis, snowboards, golf clubs, various bats and racquets, jet skis,
canoes, etc.
Materials used in skis have developed originally from wood, through metal in the
1950s, through glass fibre in the 1960s to a variety of plastics, composites and
carbon fibre today. High performance skis include aramid fibres as a reinforcement
to provide high tension rigidity and vibration damping. While carbon adds tensile
strength, the main benefits are lighter weight and durability.
Although steel and aluminium still dominate in bicycle frames, performance fibres
such as carbon and p-aramid offer a good weight/rigidity combination and are
increasingly used in cycle components, such as handlebars.
In many product sectors, the composites take the form of loose fibre, but an
increasingly high proportion of products such as skis, snowboards, and canoes are
using fabric substrates of varying degrees of complexity. For example, the use of
multi-axial fabrics, formed by layers of nonwoven fabrics laid at angles across each
other and stitched together, has been extended from their original aerospace
application into snowboards. Elsewhere, spacer fabrics have become popular as a
means of speeding up the resin impregnation process. Fabrics may be woven, warp
knit or weft knit, typically using a mixture of monofilament and multifilament
thermoplastic fibres, such as polyester.
However, growth rates in the Sporttech composites market are expected to slacken,
especially in Western markets, as many end use sectors begin to mature. Already
virtually all snowboards and most skis are made from composite materials, while
there is a limit to how large a share of other market segments high performing, but
expensive, composites can be expected to gain. At the very top end of the market
13.5
2003
composites face competition from other, even higher performing materials such as
titanium, despite their even higher price.
13.4.7
Artificial turf
Although fibres such as nylon and PVC are
used in artificial grass, this end use is now
dominated by polypropylene, mostly in the
form of fibrillated slit tape which may also
be subsequently textured (e.g. knit-de-knit
or bulked). For indoor use, 12, 16 or 24
ends of lower denier slit tape may be
twisted together into a 'multifilament'
structure.
The slit tape yarns are tufted into a woven backing, again usually made of
polypropylene. Some fabrics with a lower pile for specialist applications are woven,
rather than tufted, while polyethylene has been introduced as a backing material to
reduce friction burns.
13.4.8
Tents
There has been a major shift in recent years away from the use of nylon in tent
fabrics towards polyester. This switch is largely a result of the problems of dyeing
polyester being overcome by the use of pigment coating, enabling the much lower
priced polyester fibre to be used. Most fabrics are PU-coated and/or silicon
proofed.
Proofed cotton canvas is still used for large, less portable tents and marquees.
13.4.9
Sleeping bags
Like tents, sleeping bags vary considerably in complexity and performance. Most
employ lightweight nylon fabrics as an outer cover, but polyester and
cotton/polyester blends can also be used at the lower end of the market. The
choice of inner fabric varies more widely and depends to a large extent on the
fillings used and the price/performance ratio of the finished product. Examples
include soft handle nylon, polyester/cotton, cotton and viscose blends. All inner
fabrics should, however, be 'user friendly', and warm and soft to the touch.
Natural products such as goose and duck down are still generally regarded as
having the best performance in terms of insulation, loft and drape, and these still
dominate the top end of the market. However, synthetic fibres, mostly based on
polyester, and often of complex structure or cross section, have been developed to
imitate, and almost match, the characteristics of down whilst offering far faster
drying times and better thermal performance when wet. Fillings are often
laminated to the outer material to prevent migration during use.
There has also been a trend towards the use of breathable laminates such as
Sympatex in sleeping bags.
13.4.10
2003
Over recent years, and as rucksacks and bags have become fashion items, there has
been a trend towards the use of polyester fabrics, at least in areas where abrasion
requirements are lower, in view of the brighter colours with less shine and softer
texture attainable with this fibre, as well as its lower cost. Bags and rucksacks
produced from polyester fabrics now account for around two-thirds of the total
market.
Narrow woven fabrics, mostly in polypropylene, are used as strapping.
Polyester is believed to have also increased its share of the market for other bags
and soft luggage used for sports and leisure purposes, especially in the middle price
range. Nylon fabrics are still extensively used, however, sometimes coated with
PVC (at the cheaper end of the market). There is also some use of nonwoven
substrates, PU- or PVC-coated, for example in 'leather look' handbags.
Textile shopping bags are often made of polypropylene tape, or of renewable and
biodegradable materials such as jute, cotton or hemp, with natural fibres accounting
for half of the market volume in the year 2000.
13.4.11
Marine fabrics
Marine covers are used to cover the entrance and other areas of boats, largely
when the vessel is not being used. A number of different woven fabric types,
largely based either on solution-dyed acrylics (for their UV resistance), PVC-coated
polyester or cotton canvas are used in large volumes as covers for boats, the
majority of which are pleasure craft.
