Bison wrestlers attend three tournaments

Bison wrestling club has been busy the last two weeks. The wrestlers continue practice two hours a night on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday to prepare for the continued tournaments. Nine boys attended the a Sunday tournament sponsored by Belle Fourche Wrestling Club. Cooper Mackaben earned 2nd place in his first event this season. Colbin Seidel also made his first appearance at a tournament and earned a 2nd place medal. Kaden Glover continues to fight tough matches and fell in the 4th place spot in Belle. Rylee Veal wrestled his way to 2nd place. Ashtin Gerbracht and Corbin Mackaben wrestled in the 9-10 age group. Ashtin and Corbin both came home with 2nd place medals. Shane Collins went 3-0 in the 1112 group earning his first bobblehead trophy for first place. Jaren Beckman, also wrestling in the 11-12 group won 2 and lost 1 landing him in 2nd place. Tanner Cables wrestled in the 13-14 age group and placed 3rd. The boys all wrestled with a lot of heart and continue to work hard. Rylee Veal and Colt Kopren traveled to Rapid City to compete at the Little Big Man Tournament sponsored by Black and Blue wrestling at St. Tomas Moore. The Friday night contest was only for 6 and under or 7-8 wrestlers. Colt worked very hard and won 2, but lost one match coming in second. Rylee bested all of his competitors winning a fist place honor. Congrats to two young wrestlers. Shane Collins and Ashtin Gerbracht along with Coaches Brad and Tracy made their way to Lead on Saturday to give their best at the Lead Deadwood wrestling tournament. Lead had right at 400 boys and girls wrestling in the contest. Ashtin wrestled his way to 3rd place this weekend, while Shane went 3-0 again to bring home first. The boys look forward to a dual with Harding County during this weeks varsity triangular in Buffalo and then will travel to either Sturigs or Lemmon this coming weekend. Keep up the great work boys.

Private pesticide applicator certification class

The SDSU Extension Service will be hosting private pesticide applicator certification classes in Union Center, Belle Fourche and Bison. The dates include: Tuesday, February 19 at the Central Meade County Community Center in Union Center and on Wednesday, Feb. 20th in the basement of the First Interstate Bank in Belle Fourche. A third training will be held on Feb. 26th at the Bentley Building in Bison. The classes will begin at 1 pm MT and run until 4 pm. Anyone in South Dakota who wishes to purchase restricted use pesticides or who is using pesticides in the production of agricultural commodity an amounting to greater than one thousand dollars gross sales potential per year on any property is required to obtain a private applicator certification. Certification is free and will be good for five years (December 2017). Anyone who would like to become a certified private applicator for the first time or who needs to recertify because their certification has expired is encouraged to attend. All attendees are required to bring a government issued picture ID when they attend this certification class. S.D. Ag in the Classroom and SD Farm Families host essay contest

South Dakota Ag in the Classroom (SDAC) and South Dakota Farm Families (SDFF) are hosting an essay contest for third and fourth grade students across South Dakota. The topic for this years contest is How Agriculture Impacts Me Every Day. The winning student will receive a classroom pizza party hosted by SDFF, a visit from a local agricultural producer, and a certificate. The winning essay will be published on SDAC and SDFF websites and Facebook pages. By having to do some research before writing about the impact agriculture has on their everyday lives, youth are enlightened as to just how many times each day they experience some aspect of agriculture, even if they dont live on a farm, said Ann Price, Executive Director for SDAC. South Dakota dairy and hog farmers have been visiting classrooms as a part of Ag Uniteds National Ag Week activities for six years now, said Kelly Nelson, Outreach Director for SDFF. We are excited to be partnering with South Dakota Ag in the Classroom to add the essay portion to the Ag Week activities. Third- and fourth-grade teachers are encouraged to utilize this contest as a writing exercise for their classrooms. Entire classrooms can submit essays, Nelson said. The more students from a single classroom who enter, the greater the chances that room will be having pizza for lunch one day. This contest was designed to meet the Common Core standards for writing, Price added. Teachers can use this as a practice activity before the DSTEP tests. They can refer to the entry blank on the website to see exactly what standards are being met. Any third- or fourth-grade student in South Dakota can enter. Entries are due March 1, with the winner announced March 15 on the SDAC and SDFF Facebook pages. Entry forms can be found on the SDFF (www.agunited.org) SDAC and (www.agclassroom.org/sd) websites.
