THE LAW OF ATTRACTION IN COACHING

Introduction

When you really want something, the whole universe conspires to make it happen! Paulo Coelhoi

The Law of Attraction could not have been defined any simpler than as done by Paulo Coelho. The growing interest in the Law of Attraction through the books and audio-visual products that have been produced in recent years shows that many people want to change their lives for the better and are looking for tools and techniques that can help them achieve this.

In recent years life coaching has also become increasingly popular and there are now a range of coaches who specialze on areas such as career coaching, prosperity coaching or relationship coaching. Life coaching tends to concentrate on tried and tested methods of goal setting and action planning, which are extremely powerful and effective. ii The objective of this paper is to explore how a coach can use this empowering technique to support a clients journey on a quest for fulfillment.

The Law of Attraction

For many, "The Secret" hasn't been a secret for centuries. It's been going by different names. Every other generation feels the need to rename it, to make it theirs. But changing the name doesn't change the idea.

The concept of "positive thinking" was the last topic and the "Law of Attraction" is the newest. But the focus is still the same. What you think will happen, will happen. Your thoughts will manifest themselves into your reality. The words change, but not the meaning.

Focusing on negative things will cause these negative things to become reality. If your life and mind are filled with anger, hate and dissatisfaction, you will find yourself surrounded by those very same things.

Learning to focus your thoughts on positive things, love, happiness and contentment will have the desired results and your life will be filled with these positive things.

Just wishing for the good things in life will not make them magically appear right before your eyes. It's a learning process in which you teach yourself to change the way you think.

The average human mind tends to focus on the negative. Worrying about fears, whether real or imagined, consumes much of our thought process. It's part of our survival instinct. Often this takes place on an unconscious level, and we don't even notice these thoughts.

The Law of Attraction is the way to change your thinking process. Regardless of its name, the result is the same: Improving your daily life through your thoughts.

Attract the Universe and Achieve Your Goals

The Universal Law of Attraction can be a very effective tool in making you achieve your goals and practically everything else you want to have in this lifetime. You will realize that desire should always start from within, and the world will just obey your thoughts, actions and ideas. Here are some guidelines on how to get your objectives just the way you want. Ask the Universe According to the Universal Law of Attraction, ask the universe and it shall give to you. However, to achieve your goals, you have to truly have an idea about what kind of thing or event you want to happen in your life. There are plenty of items that you can ask from the world. The most common are superficial things such as money, a new car, a new house, etc. More meaningful items include better relationships with your family or spouse, happiness in your job and life, etc. All of these can be given to you at the time you want and in the extent you need.

The Way You Ask The way you ask the universe will also matter. Keep in mind that the universe will immediately hear and respond in the manner you believe in. Your first thought might go, 'I want a brand new Ferrari.' The world will then respond, 'Your wish is my command.' However, other thoughts can still enter such as, 'But it may still be when I'm in my 40's.' or 'But it will happen when I get the promotion.' or even 'It can't happen.' The world will just say yes to everything you inject in your thoughts.

The time, extent, severity and other details of your wish will be determined by your mind alone. If you have any doubt or disbelief about the power of the universe to provide, then it will truly give to you accordingly. Make sure you clean your thoughts thoroughly so that you set your goals straight and allow the universe to perform the best way.

Your Actions Once you have set your goals and asked from the universe, your mind, thoughts and body will start acting automatically to lead towards the goals and objectives. You will subconsciously accomplish small tasks and open up a wide array of opportunities that are meant to direct you to the ultimate mark. Renew your goals each morning as you wake up and your body will just function immediately towards these.

Work both consciously and subconsciously. Remember that it also requires effort and discipline on your part to receive the best things in life. Do not expect everything to just fall into place. If you want to land that promotion, then you should start going to work early, volunteer for projects and show that you are prepared for bigger responsibilities.

Staying Positive The Universal Law of Attraction helps you achieve your goals, as long as you remain positive. Always believe that the universe is capable of providing immediately. Anything can actually happen, in the time you have set. Always be optimistic in the face of adversity. It is not impossible that you will encounter a few problems along the way, but what's more important is how you relate to the situation in a positive light. Be conscious about what's happening and act to alleviate the effects.

Appreciative Inquiry
All social organization is an arbitrary, social construction. Our ability to create new and better organizations is limited only by our imagination and collective will. Furthermore, language and words are the basic building blocks of social reality. Rather than seeing language as a passive purveyor of meaning between people, post modernists see language as an active agent in the creation of meaning. As we talk to each other, we are constructing the world we see and think about, and as we change how we talk we are changing that world.

In an intriguing paper Cooperrider (1990) presented his "heliotropic hypothesis" which is that social systems evolve toward the most positive images they hold of themselves. These images are not necessarily conscious in that they may not be discussible by the members of that social system, but nevertheless he argues that such images exist and the more they "affirm" the group the more firmly they hold the group to a pattern of being prescribed by the theory/idea/image the group has of itself at its very best. When these images are out of step with the requirements the social system faces the group will experience itself as dysfunctional and rational attempts to fix itself will not work until the underlying "affirmative image" of the group is changed. Appreciative inquiry, therefore, attempts to create a new and better affirmative image for the social system, one better aligned with the organizations critical contingencies.

The change theory is: If you change the stories you change the inner dialogue. Nothing the "rational mind" decides it wants will actually happen if the "inner dialogue" is resistant to it.

Appreciative process theorizes that you can create change by paying attention to what you want more of rather than paying attention to problems.iii

Coaching Application
There are some similarities between life coaching and the Law of Attraction. Life coaching is founded on the notion that you are a resourceful person who can bring about positive and productive changes in your life through the ways in which you think, feel and behave. In addition there are a number of life coaching tools and practices such as affirmations and goal setting that can work extremely well when placed within the framework of the Law of Attraction.iv

Elizabeth Scott, M.S., in her article Use The Law Of Attraction To Create A Better Life has very succinctly listed the steps that can lead your clients to the less-stressed life they envision, via the Law of Attraction. Here's How: 1. List Your Frustrations. Make a list of all the things in your life that have you feeling frustrated, or that youd like to change. This can include a stressful job, your childrens behavior, or conflict in your relationships, for example. 2. List The Positives. Next, begin a journal. For each situation on your list, find everything you can think of thats positive in the situation. For example, a difficult job may also bring the benefits of income, creative challenge, or personal growth; the job can be a vehicle for expanding your level of patience, for example. (At the very least, it could bring you the valuable information that this isnt what you want to be doing with your life!) 3. Maintain a Positive Attitude. This doesn't just mean to paste a smile on your face; it means to work at feeling grateful for what you already have, and for what

you believe will come. That's right: shift your focus from your feelings of lack, and toward feelings of gratitude and abundance. Believe in yourself, in your future, and in God or the Universe, and know that you can make whatever changes in your life you want. 4. Visualize A Better Life. Building and maintaining a visual image of what you want in your life (instead of focusing on what you dont want) can be a powerful way to attract positive change and opportunity. Make a detailed list of what youd like in your life. Sit down daily and visualize what your new life would look like and how it would feel to have these changes. 5. Think, Feel, Act. Be sure that your thoughts, feelings, and behavior all focus on your goals, rather than your frustrations with your situation, or any negative feelings you may have. Keep your self-talk positive and optimistic; engage in visualizations each day that reflect the life you want; work on your plan of action. If you do this, you should find you make quick strides toward the life you want. Tips: 1. Frame your thoughts the way you would create positive affirmations, by focusing on what you do want rather than what frustrates you. (See this article on positive affirmations for additional information on this effective tool for positive change.) 2. Keep a gratitude journal, where you record the things for which you are grateful. There are many health and stress management benefits to journaling, and this practice helps you develop an attitude of gratitude, which creates a space for more abundance.

3. If youre not sure how your thoughts affect your life, you can assess your thought patterns with this optimism quiz. 4. Accept What Is. Rather than spending every day focused on what you dont like about your life and wishing things were different, try to come to terms with the bad as well as the good. This doesnt mean that you dont make positive changes in your life; it just means you dont focus on your frustrations everyday. You make peace with what is, while making progress toward what youd like to have. 5. For more on information on how it all works, see this article on understanding the Law of Attraction.v

Conclusion
There is enough matter on the Universal Law of Attraction to draw a parallel between the law and coaching, as well as support its effective application in the coaching process. They both advocate a postive and energized path to lifes goals achievements. The principle, simply put, is that a positive intent gives rise to positive thought which in turn gives rise to positive action. This law basically puts the power back in your (and your clients) hands because it says we can get what we think about and that our circumstances are not determined by the fickle hand of fate, but instead are shaped by our own conscious and unconscious thoughts.
