A fascinating Colour Journey through the exciting World of Natural Dyes and Textiles

About 500 photographs and illustrations in colour

KOEKBOYA is a Turkish word. Literally translated, it means root-dye. It is used in Turkey for all kinds of natural dyes, whether they actually are made from roots or rather from flowers, leaves, tubers, or seeds. Even insect dyes are included in the Turkish expression KOEKBOYA. In this book, almost 100 dyeplants from Turkey and around the world are introduced on a scientific basis: their botany, their qualities for dyeing, their cultural and historical importance, and in light of the world-wide Renaissance of natural dyeing aspects concerning their reintroduction, for professional use or only as a hobby. Tested dye instructions ease access to their practical use. In addition, there are special chapters on the various dyeing techniques, on dye insects, indigo and Tyrian Purple, as well as on textiles fibers, from wool and cotton to wild silk, hemp and rafia. The basic textile techniques and the related equipment are briefly described and illustrated with drawings and photographs, and the various possibilities for decorating with natural dyes are presented. An introductory chapter on colour provides a scientific background, leading then to questions and perception about color psychology and color aesthetics. Ecological problems and those of globalization, as well as the multiplicity in the world of textiles, are also touched. 300 pages in the format 21 x 28 cm (8,27 x 11 inches), 500 colour illustrations, numerous drawings, graphs and maps lead the reader into the great and fascinating realm of Natural Dyes and Textiles. Since 1981, the author, Dr. Harald Bhmer, with the support of a German Development Aid Program, has reintroduced together with his wife Renate the use of natural dyes in Turkish villages. He was the initiator of the DOBAG project, a cooperation between Marmara University Istanbul and village cooperatives. The project is based on scientific analyses of old Turkish textiles, of plants and insects, as well as on research in the field. It has strengthened the economic and social position of the village women involved. Starting in the Middle East, Dr. Bhmer has expanded his research into dyeing of textiles with many trips to other parts of the world. The author, Dr. Harald Bhmer, and the Turkish co-authors, Prof. Dr. Nevin Enez and Dr. Recep Karada, teach on the Fine Arts Faculty of Marmara University Istanbul. In the departments Laboratory for Natural Dyes, they devote themselves to both the practical aspetcs of using natural dyes and to research on dye analysis. Museums and collections from around the world have requested analysis of their own textiles, which has resulted in numerous publications. Co-author Charllotte Kwon, the widely traveled owner of Maiwa Handprints, a company that specializes in natural dyed and traditional textiles, and president of the Maiwa Foundation in Vancouver, Canada, expands the horizon of the book to the Indian subcontinent, where she is working for years directly with the women, who weave and embroider with the dyers, block printers, and other craftspeople.
