Presidents Message
Ciao tutti, If any of you thought that the first half of the year was busy, the second half is proving to be the quite the same. IHSI had an exceptional run at the Ciao Italia exhibit at the Indiana State Fair in August. The exhibit was representative of Italys culture, architecture, sport, industry and its business connections with the state. The exhibit also included the history of Italian immigration in Indiana, the Italian American experience along with a variety of artifacts on display which were contributed by many of the Italian American families in Indiana. Many who stopped by the IHSI information station shared stories about their Italian families, trips taken to Italy or just wanted information about the Society and its events. IHSI gained a few new members and made new friends which included those who were visiting from Italy. The bocce demonstration under the watchful eye of Bocce Commissioner Joe Giacoletti was the big hit at the exhibit. Joe and the many bocce league volunteers were extremely busy due to the high interest in the game. It was great exposure for the society and all of our volunteers made all feel welcomed. The Society was also able to secure some of the items which the State Fair had made for exhibit at no cost which can be used at other IHSI events. Cultural committee chair Silvana Martini Schuster is commended for a job well done in getting IHSI ready for this event while maintaining all the cultural activities in progress for the year. The Society also recognizes Connie Qazi whose assistance and daily presence at the exhibit helped to keep it all on track. Connie made a few points for IHSI with the fair staff and ISP with her daily baked items for all.

On August 12, 2012 the Society in conjunction with the Indiana National Guard held its annual Our Lady of The Chapel in Meadow mass and picnic at Camp Atterbury. This was the 23rd year for this event which commemorated the Italian POW Chapel and the POWS who built it leaving their Italian cultural imprint on central Indiana. The event also included very touching tributes to Sol Petruzzi who had been so dedicated to the Chapel for the years. Thank you to Jim Divita, John Accetturo, Matt Iaria, the Indiana National Guard the many restaurants who contributed the delicious food, volunteers and all who made this such a success. Just when you thought you could catch your breath IHSI will be at the Indianapolis International Festival on the City Market Plaza on Saturday September 15, 2012 from noon to 6:00 P.M. The Society will acquaint those attending the fair with Indianapolis sister city Monza Italy and IHSI along with a little bocce. It will be another great opportunity to place IHSI in the public eye and shine. On Friday October 12, 2012 which is Columbus Day IHSI will celebrate the occasion with a wine tasting and pairing at Chef Josephs Connoisseur Room here in Indianapolis. This will feature a magnificent pairing of Italian wines and delictables. This Columbus Day will be like no other along with entertainment which will include many favorite Italian musical selections. Congratualtions to Pietro Ferri selected as the recipient of the Sol Petruzzi Italian American Award, Cannoli Queen LLC as the Italian American Business of the Year and Dr. Mary Grace Pennella who will receive the IHSI Presidents Award. IHSI Book Club Meeting

Next meeting, Wednesday, October 17, 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Linos Caf and Restaurant 1201 Main Street Speedway, IN (317) 222-5238 Book: La Storia, 500 Years of Italian Immigration, by Jerry Mangione and Ben Morreale.

The book engendered a good discussion and brought about the sharing of many immigration stories by those present. Prior to the book discussion, the book club members will enjoy a meal at the restaurant. Linos Caf is located in the new Delarra building in Speedway. The restaurant is delightfully Italian modern and offers sandwiches, soups, salads and pasta entries. We will choose our dinner from the menu. Also, FYI, Linos has a small deli in the store where one can purchase good mortadella, salami, prosciutto, parmeggiano, etc. Those of us who attended the last meeting, each left with aromatic purchases!

Please read to page number 237 for discussion. The members present decided that we will continue to read La Storia in segments until we finish it and we will read the other selection by Annie Hawes after we finish La Storia.

Bocce at the S tate Fair:

For 16 days in August, the IHSI Bocce League introduced visitors to the game of bocce in the Ciao Italia exhibit at the Indiana State Fair. Volunteers from the IHSI Bocce League gave their time in behalf of the Society. Multi Grazie e Tutti !! A small indoor court was built to demonstrate the game to those throughout Indiana, who were not aware of the game of bocce. Among the visitors, Indiana's First Lady, Cheri Daniels, came by for a quick lesson and some strategy pointers.
