20112012 Annual Report

The Early 20112012 Annual Report Literacy Resource Center for Southern Arizona

Dear Friends, Make Way for Books (MWFB) has been raising awareness and offering early literacy services in Tucson for nearly 15 years. I couldnt be more grateful for all of the many board members, staff, volunteers and supporters who have joined us along the way. In 20112012 we have provided educational opportunities and resources to over 25,969 children, their parents, and early childhood educators throughout Pima County. This annual report highlights the tremendous impact that MWFB has made in our community. The fact is that sharing books with young children as soon as they are born really does change lives. Research shows that the single most significant factor influencing a childs early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to prior to beginning kindergarten. Young children without books in their homes are at a disadvantage in developing the essential reading readiness skills to be successful in school and later in life. Currently in Pima County, more than 40% of 4th grade students are reading below grade level. The state actually calculates future prison bed space based on 4th grade reading scores. Therefore, effectively preparing young children for school helps to ensure that our community will thrive. The quality of MWFB services is well-known in the early childhood community. A growing waiting list exists for our programs. Your continued support is greatly appreciated. You will be helping us to share more stories and change more lives! With gratitude, Mary Jan Bancroft Executive Director

Mission

Our mission is to foster and support the love of reading in children from birth to age five. MAKE WAY FOR BOOKS provides a full continuum of early literacy education, programs, and resources to make reading an important and enjoyable part of families lives. Our highest priority is to serve families with young children and early childhood professionals in under-served areas of Tucson and southern Arizona.

Vision

Our vision is that all families and educators in our community will provide meaningful shared literacy experiences for the young children in their lives. As a result, all children will enter school with the necessary skills to be successful and will be inspired and motivated by a life-long love of books and reading.

Education and Resources

Fifty in-home support specialists attended the MWFB Reading with Your Baby workshops and distributed 955 MWFB Early Literacy Kits to families in Southern Arizona. 4,582 families attended the Story Town Annual Family Literacy Festival and other community events where MWFB facilitated literacy activities and gave away books to children. Kenneth was never able to sit still long enough to read a story. But now we read together every day. Every night before bed he says, book! and we read together. His favorite book is Splash. Sometimes during the day he will bring me a book and well stop what were doing and look at it together. Helena from Arcadia Park on her son who participated in the MWFB RAR Program

Sixty families attended weekly MWFB Raising A Reader (RAR) family literacy sessions and books were given to children to keep. The Book M.A.G.I.C (Making a Giant Impact on Children) train-the-trainer program was presented to 30 parent educators from 8 family support agencies. More than 2,500 children and parents experienced the magic of sharing books and doing fun literacy activities together this year. This year, more than 8,000 books were given out at Family Literacy programs and events.
