A farewell to the View

A
fter three years of helming the Granite Bay View, I must inform you, our faithful readers, that this is my last edition. When I first took over the View in February 2010, that months edition was 30 pages. Previous editions were in the 20-page range. Today I am proud to say the magazine is 50 pages each month (and sometimes more!). That is no doubt due to the great many advertisers who support a product that delivers unique and original stories to the community. Thank you to our advertisers, whose robust support of the View has meant Ive never had to cut a story! Ive also never had a

Local author shares her views on why women over 40 are in the prime of their lives
BY STEPHANIE GARCIA

elanie Baker Garrett, local dating expert and self-proclaimed cougar, has a lot to be thankful for. Her book, Ripening of a Woman, is now available on Amazon, and it is gaining popularity due to its humorous tone about a womans journey to awaking her sexuality in the prime of her life. Garrett considers herself a cougar. (She claims to have been cheated out of winning the title of Miss California Cougar in 2009.) But Garrett didnt set out to write a guide to becoming a cougar. I wrote Ripening of a Woman to help women in their 40s and 50s get back into the dating scene, said Garrett, a Granite Bay resident for sevPHILIP WOOD GRANITE BAY VIEW en years. CROP REPORT
We harvested a few quotes from Granite Bay author Melanie Baker Garretts book Ripening of a Woman.
On the shrinking dating pool for women over 40: The men know it and act like a kid in a candy store. There is no need for a relationship when the men are in such high demand. The really sad fact is; the guys who have the most to offer are already married. On the expiration date for women in Hollywood: A woman becomes a certain age and she can only play the unattractive character roles. Thank God for the strong, talented actresses like Meryl Streep, versatile and elegant and always the entire package. On examples men set for their daughters: If you date women a lot younger and buy them gifts, she will learn quickly how to get things with her body. When you date a lot of different women, she will learn women are NOT valued in relationships. On finding passion: If you find yourself with a nice guy, respectful, good provider, family oriented and you feel comfortable together but you dont feel any Passion (and you just left a marriage without Passion), dont settle. Why cheat yourself? On younger men trying harder: If you cant teach an Old Dog new tricks ... its time to get a Young Dog.

scape has changed, there are new rules, and my book is meant to entertain and educate. The book covers everything from current sex trends to online dating, to pop culture examples. Garrett not only shares some of her own stories, but those of other women that paint a true picture of what is out there. She also explains the real meaning of the word cougar. The term cougar has become a word used to refer to a growing number of middle-aged women who seek out, meet, and date, younger men. Women re-entering the dating game after divorce and being married for several years are finding that many things have changed, Garrett said. And she knows from experience. After an eight-year marriage with two children, she found herself divorced and single in her mid-40s. It was a new world, Garrett said. I didnt realize how hard it would be to date, and I learned a lot.

RIPE: Garrett paints of picture of whats out there for

In our 40s and 50s, we are at our peak. We feel more secure, confident and intellectually, we have grown. We are sexually, mentally and physically in our prime.

Garrett wanted to share her experiences and give advice to other women who may find themselves in the same situation. Women today need to be educated on everything from online dating to repercussions of casual sex and especially the pitfalls to avoid, Garrett said. Unless you have been out and about dating in the current scene you simply do not recognize the red flags. While some people may believe that cougar behavior reveals a sense of desperation amongst older women, others view being a cougar as a source of selfempowerment. In our 40s and 50s, we are at our peak, Garrett said. We feel more secure, confident and intellectually, we have grown. We are

sexually, mentally and physically in our prime. Although Garrett admits that she does prefer to date younger men, she said the cougar/cub relationships that so many hear about in the news can have the recipe for mutual satisfaction. Some young men are particularly attracted to a cougar because they perceive the relationship as being one with no strings attached, so they dont feel the pressure of being in a committed relationship. Another benefit is not having to provide financially in the relationship, and being with a woman who is wiser, and therefore more experienced in life and in the bedroom. We are not looking for our meal ticket or a parent for our children, Garrett

said. We are looking to explore ourselves and are confident enough to go ask for and get what we want. Garrett says the book is a humorous story offering insight, advice and adventure into a world many are not familiar with. Women love this book, but men are writing me as well and telling me that they enjoyed it, too, she said.

El Dorado Musical Theatre makes case with Legally Blonde

he El Dorado Hills based El Dorado Musical Theatre (EDMT) is making its case for consistently taking top honors in regional theatrical awards with their latest offering, Legally Blonde: The Musical. The cast and crew have been hard at work in this Encore Production. Sue Maur, producer, said the show sports 44 actors ranging in age from 12 to 21. Maur is no stranger to EDMT. Ive probably been involved in at least six shows as a parent coordinator or producer, she said. As an Encore Production, the actors were required to audition for parts. Most of the other shows put on by EDMT arent as rigid, with organizers finding a role for anyone who wants to be a part of the show until the cast is full. We started rehearsals in November, Maur said. We open Feb. 15, so it will probably be 10 weeks of rehearsals. As an Encore show, everyone in it is selected by audition only. The show tests the dancing skills of the actors. Its definitely some more fast-paced dancing and requires cast members to have dance abilities, she said. EDMT has put on shows set in Wonderland, on a cruise ship, in the 1950s and the imagination of Dr. Seuss. So, put-

had a beautiful dress for my high school prom: white with a burst of pink flowers across the bodice and matching pink sash at the waist. My mother and I found the frock at a popular store in an east Bay Area community. My corsage matched perfectly and I rather liked how I looked. When I made my entrance at a pre-dance party, I swept through the door and stopped short. Was that my reflection in a huge mirror in the entry? The reflection moved and snarled at me. You have MY dress! Dont you hate it when that happens? Well, it wont if you shop at Rima, the fabulous boutique in Granite Bays Quarry Ponds. As a vocalist, I am very much attracted to lyrics, and Mercer had this way of writing lyrics where it felt like he was reaching into the listeners heart, Lessack said. Its almost like each song is a play, the story is so full.

Lessack said the partnership with Purl has been a good one. I love working with Linda, he said. First of all, I am a big fan of her voice, but she is also a very good actress. This is the second visit

to Folsom for the two, and Lessack said they are happy to return to Folsom and Three Stages. We just love the town, he said. Everyone in Folsom treated us very well. Everyone is very professional and Three Stages is such a beautiful venue. All-you-can-eat sushi? Yes please

like to think that I have a pretty hefty appetite, and when it comes to sushi, I can eat a lot of it. But having dined out around town a bit, Ive noticed that all-you-caneat sushi is all but impossible to find in these parts. So when I found out about Raku Sushi, a new restaurant in Roseville that serves all-you-caneat sushi for lunch and dinner, I got excited to go try it out and set my hopes high. I really only have a couple of rules when it comes to sushi give it to me raw and give it to me fresh. Sushi can be as exotic or creative as the chef wants to make it, or it can be simple, basic, standard. As long as its fresh, its all good to me. Raku Sushi is about as straight forward as it gets. Set back in a small strip mall across from Costco on Stanford

Ranch Road, the modest all-you-can-eat menu offers all the sushi standards nigiri (sliced raw fish served over rice), hand rolls and sushi rolls. The open seating, welllit, cafeteria-type dining room screamed what, to me, seemed to be the restaurants concept come in, get full, get out. A small sushi bar located in the back of the dining room seats only about six people, but the large dining room makes up for the lack of space at the bar with about 20 tables. In the back corner of the room sits a serveyourself salad bar, and two large flat screen TVs hang on either side of the dining room. On my recent visit to the new restaurant, which opened in midNovember, we were immediately greeted by

manager Tony Huang, who showed us to a table close to the salad bar. Huang explained to us the concept of the allyou-can-eat menu, which included the nigiri, hand rolls and unlimited trips to the salad bar. Sushi rolls, he explained, came out with four to five slices, depending on the roll. My date and I were surprised to not see miso soup on the menu. I later found out that Raku Sushi offers another menu which has miso soup and many other items, which I will get into later, but those items are not included in the all-you-can-eat option. Not knowing that at the time, my date and I asked for some miso soup to start, which Huang promptly delivered. We then ordered a couple of rolls before visiting the salad bar. The salad bar contains seaweed salad, cabbage and peanut salad, green beens, sliced cucumber,

and peanut salad, green beens, sliced cucumber, spicy cucumbers, edamame (steamed soy beans), sliced oranges and a steamed mussel with tomato salsa. The cabbage and peanut salad was a favorite for both of us. I noticed that the salad bar was also the place to get wasabi (Japanese horseradish) and soy sauce for the sushi. The selfservice was quite convenient given that I generally have to ask often for more wasabi when I go out for sushi. For rolls, we started with the Wasabi Hamachi Roll, made up of seared albacore tuna, avocado, hamachi (yellowtail tuna) and wasabi tobiko (flying fish roe), and the Miso Tuna Roll seared albacore tuna and avocado topped with a miso sauce.

Tuna and salmon are among the popular types of rolls served at Raku Sushi, which recently opened in Roseville.
There was nothing fancy about these rolls, but the fish was fresh and the rolls tasted quite nice with my soy and wasabi mix. Next we tried the Honey Walnut Roll shrimp tempura and honey-glazed walnuts rolled with rice and seaweed wrap topped with avocado. This was by far our favorite roll of the night, as it had a good combination of sweet and savory along with a nice crunchy texture. Being a devout 49ers fan, we had to try the 49ers Roll shrimp tempura and avocado, rolled and topped with salmon and lemon. We found the lemon to be a bit overpowering, but it did add a nice freshness. Huang then recommended the Harbor Roll, the Firebird and Bobs Roll, explaining that these three rolls were the most popular and received the most positive reviews on Yelp. Although we were starting to

feel full at this point, we went ahead and ordered these rolls for the benefit of you, faithful Dining View readers. The Harbor Roll (deep fried tuna roll topped with a generous helping of imitation crab meat served with a house spicy sauce) was the most visually appealing roll wed seen all night. Huang explained that we were not to dip the roll in our soy/wasabi mixture as it already came with a sauce. I abided by his suggestion upon first taste, but then went ahead and dipped the next bite into my soy/wasabi sauce (please dont tell him). The Firebird (shrimp tempura and crab meat topped with tuna and garlic sauce) was quite overpowered by the garlic sauce, but tasty nonetheless. Bobs Roll (grilled eel and spicy crab topped with smoked salmon and avocado) was another one of my favorites. By now, you must have noticed a theme with the sushi rolls. Most, if not all, of the rolls

SUSHI: Secret menu offers bento boxes for those looking for something more than sushi
continued from page 15 at Raku Sushi are quite simple, using one or two ingredients on the inside of the roll and topped with one or two other ingredients. If theres one thing I dont like about most sushi restaurants, its a menu that is littered with fried shrimp rolls smothered in mayonnaisebased sauces. While Raku Sushi does have plenty of fried shrimp rolls on the menu, there are many other options and the mayonnaise-based sauces are all but absent. We did also try some nigiri and a hand roll, and if you want my advice, the $19.95 all-you-caneat price tag for dinner is well worth it if, for nothing else, you just want to come in and get full on nigiri. It was the freshest fish we had tasted all
It was then I found out that the restaurant has another menu outside of the all-you-can-eat option. This menu contained many of the Japanese staples for those who may not care for sushi, but may be on a date with somebody who does. Bento boxes with teriyaki chicken or beef, chicken katsu (fried chicken), and vegetarian options are all on this secret menu. The vegetarian menu is very different, Chu said. All told, I enjoyed my conversation with Chu, who is quite passionate and proud of the menu hes created. He has been operating a Raku Sushi in West Sacramento for more than four years, recently decided to expand to Roseville and will soon be

opening a location in Folsom, he said. I also appreciated the no frills concept of the restaurant and thought the portion sizes were quite appropriate for allyou-can-eat sushi. The service was attentive and food came out very fast. If you are looking for a fancy sushi joint with exotic rolls smothered in mayonnaise-based sauces and fried this-orthat, this might not be what you are looking for. But if you want to get your sushi fix in a nonpretentious, laid back environment, Raku Sushi is the perfect venue.

night. At the end of the meal, owner Vincent Chu, who has been making sushi for 17 years and designed the menu himself, sat down with us to talk a little more about the menu.

Program helps junior high students explore wide range of languages

Seventh grader Delaney Nehrbass takes notes in her Spanish class at Cavitt Junior High School.

Its nothing unusual to hear hola and como estas on school campuses. Area schools have offered Spanish classes for decades. But how about ni hao, or ni haoma? If you didnt recognize these greetings in Mandarin, its because you havent signed up for Eureka Union School Districts Exploratory World Languages program, a twice a week, after-school enrichment program that will begin on Feb. 4. While both Cavitt and

Olympus junior high schools have offered after-school Spanish Enrichment classes for a number of years, as well as a year-long Spanish elective in which 8th grade students can complete their first year of high school Spanish, program coordinator Heidi Biermann and principals Jennifer Platt and Kelly Graham didnt think offering just one language was enough. Weve been talking about a language survey course for years, said Platt, Cavitts principal. I would love to offer additional languages during the school day, but I dont have enough sections to add anything. After-school courses

LANGUAGE: Program aims to help junior high students get a head start on high school
continued from 17 Schools Foundations enrichment program there has been such a high demand for Spanish that we have had to add an additional academic class, Platt said. Biermann had always hoped to add additional languages to ESFs enrichment offerings. It was never my intention to bring just one language to the schools, she said. Im always helping out at the high school (Granite Bay High) and I realized we are feeding into their Spanish program, but we dont really support French or Japanese. We decided to start
offering additional languages in 7th and 8th grade as enrichment classes, though I would love to see an opportunity for younger students in the future, as well. We are beginning with Mandarin and French a 13-week program at Cavitt and Olympus. We will have a Mandarin teacher on one campus, a French teacher on the other, then the teachers will trade locations after seven weeks, she said. Biermann hopes to continue the program in the fall, offering up to four languages during the year, with students signing up for the year-long course to sample all the languages. Were hoping to offer Italian, Japanese and Punjabi in the fall, Biermann said. Both principals see the value of the program, and look forward to its implementation. This is a great opportunity for kids to explore languages before going to high school, Graham said. Platt agreed. This enrichment course really will connect EUSD to an understanding of a global society where other languages are used. Our kids will be better prepared to enter

If you think the library is a place where gray-haired librarians with chained bifocals shush you, well, you havent been to the Granite Bay Library lately. Walk in the door and you will see a beehive of activity. From kids thumbing through throngs of picture books to teens playing multi-user video games; from people job searching and creating resumes to seniors enjoying the newest biographies, the Granite Bay Library has something for everyone and everyone who visits feels a sense of community and welcome. While many patrons remember the Friends of the Library fashion show, author visits, and art exhibitions that took place nearly a decade ago,

the Friends group seemed to slow to a crawl in recent years. But thats about to change. The faces on the Friends board are new, and their plans are a delightful combination of old favorites and fresh ideas. as weeks at different vacation homes. While bidding on a vacation to your favorite warm-weather destination might be a good reason to attend a community crab feed, its not the best reason. The number one reason is not really for the crab or the auction items, but to support your local library, said Rhonda Tory, Friends of the Granite Bay Librarys president, pro tempore. The reasons to attend the event are threefold. Its an opportunity to support your local library; youre going to get a nice meal for your money (fresh crab, not frozen, brought in from the Bay Area); and it will be a really nice community event that will bring everyone together for a common cause. Bringing people together in a bookish setting is what the Friends group is all about. We have a lot of energy, a new website, a newsletter and a new logo, said Jennifer Rexroad, the groups membership chair. We have a great

start, and good momentum only good things can happen now. The group intends to host children and adult author events, music and more. I saw that Auburn and Rocklin libraries had newsletters and great events. I knew that Granite Bay has a great group of people who are talented, and who love libraries, Rexroad said. Why do libraries need a Friends group, some might wonder. The library is known for featuring the latest best sellers, which can sometimes have a wait list a dozen patrons long. But no library would have the best new picture books or the hottest teen reads without a little help from their Friends group, especially in challenging economic times.

With continued budget cuts, libraries are finding it increasingly difficult to purchase books or keep up to date on technology. We had a huge hit in our materials budget we have only a quarter of the budget that we had a couple of years ago, said Shari Dearing, branch librarian. Circulation is way up, and the Friends has purchased new computers for us, and offered a Hawk Talk program, which had 60 people in attendance. Tory agreed. If youre looking for new books, youre not going to find them without the Friends help, she said. In addition, the Friends recently purchased self-checkout machines, which will free library staff to help patrons.

Dr. Jeanne Conry was recently recognized by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an eco-friendly hero for her research on the impact of toxins exposure on pregnancy. Conry is an obstetrician and assistant physicianin-chief at Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center.

r. Jeanne Conry doesnt have much leisurely time left for bird watching anymore. There also isnt much time for hiking, swimming, gardening or visiting her fashion-designer daughter in Paris. Her son works as an emergency room technician in Roseville. The obstetrician and assistant physician-inchief at Kaiser Permanente Roseville Medical Center is fully immersed in studying the impact of environmental toxins on reproductive health and sharing those lessons with others, including her patients and colleagues with the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

In May, Conry, 60, becomes the fourth female president in the groups more than six decades of existence. The Granite Bay resident recently earned recognition by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as an ecofriendly hero who has contributed to protecting public health. She was honored during a ceremony on Jan. 8. EPA applauds Dr. Jeanne Conry for her national leadership to promote better health for babies and women by preventing harmful chemical exposures during pregnancy, said EPA Regional Administrator Jared Blumenfeld, in a news release. She has made reproductive environmental health a key

new emphasis for the obstetrics community. Doctors have long known that obesity and diabetes in pregnant woman leads to higher risk of birth defects, but Conry looks at the larger environmental picture research indicates that most pregnant women have measurable levels of chemicals in their bodies such as mercury, pesticides, bisphenol A (BPA), lead and flame retardants. Exposure can impact birth size and neurodevelopment, and cause defects and other health problems. If you know youre going to have a baby next year, we love that, Conry said. several task forces. Through it all, her interest in preconception health has remained. Science increasingly shows that certain chemicals are cause for con-

cern. In Conrys office on a recent morning, she pointed out a chart showing the significant increase of testicular cancer, breast cancer and hypospadias a birth

defect of the penis and the decline in sperm count over the past 40 years. This change over such a short timeframe cant be explained by genetics. So what about

the increased exposure to chemicals in the industrialized world? New medications are thoroughly researched before entering the market, unlike chemicals, which can be released into the environment with no research done. Then a few decades later, we start to see the impact, Conry said. Mercury poisoning is the classic example, she said. In the small seaside town of Minamata, Japan, a company dumped tons of methylmercurcy into the bay over the course of several decades. People living there in the 1950s consumed a lot of fish and the mercury poisoning led to neurological damage in the next generation. But it took another 20 years before anyone accepted the research on

mercury, Conry said. We assume everything is safe until proven otherwise. She urges the precautionary principle instead: Assume its harmful until proven otherwise. Conry said physicians have a responsibility to not be an ostrich with our head in the sand, and talk to their patients about harmful chemicals. For instance, she said, if you can choose to use the metal water bottle or the plastic one lined with bisphenol A, pick the metal option. Ultimately, she said, being exposed to fewer chemicals will be a consumer-driven change, determined by the purchasing choices we make.

She is a Federation Equestrian International Trainer. She trains now at Gene and Carrie Orcutts Los Lagos Equestrian Center in Granite Bay and continues to compete in

My mom was a horseperson, my dad is a musician, so I got a little bit of both. I started riding as a kid, and my mom really encouraged me because dressage is really a great background. If

you can do dressage, you can do anything, just as, if you are a dancer, if you can do ballet, you can then transform that into any dance that you want. I had been to the Atlanta Olympics to watch when I was 16 and that changed my life. Now I find that the dressage athletes from that time are not only still around, but Im working with them. Hilda Gurney is really the person who got me started in what Im doing today. I started when I was 14 as a working student with her, and then I went to work for her. She was wonderful, and helped me through my

young rider years, which is between 16 and 21.

2. Where have you traveled in your work?

3. What kind of horse can be taught dressage?

Musical-related trips include Italy, Israel, Ibiza (Spain), France, Ireland and Czechoslovakia. I moved to Grenada in 2006 and actually was playing music full time there. I played all over the coast of Spain. I only did that eight months and then I was offered a position in Jordan by a cousin to the king, the prime ministers son, a prince of Jordan. We did mainly jumpers and I did a lot of dressage work with the jumper horses. It was a beautiful farm in the desert of Amman. For equestrian work I have visited Morocco, Jordan, Spain, Denmark, Holland, Germany, China, Canada, Belgium, England, Scotland and Hungary.

Every horse can do dressage on some level. Horses are athletes, so its really important to look at their bodies, just like we do with human athletes. The dressage horses are built with a bit of a short back, between the wither and the croup. Their necks are medium to highset. So a horse thats built uphill, with natural uphill balance is really the ideal. Now thats not to say you cant do some of the lower level work on a horse that has a lower set neck. So many things play into a horse and whether theyre able to be trained, but a lot of it is, of course, their demeanor, and their breeding.
4. What is the greatest difficulty in training horses in dressage?

have dont usually have to do with horses, it usually has to do with either politics or just the everyday goings on of a barn, dealing with different personalities. But really, its not that hard. Then if you want to get into other difficulties, lets say, how difficult the sport is and having to travel internationally and hold jobs in different countries, its really been difficult to be away from my family. My familys all in Wisconsin. So that is sort of an exciting life, but at the same time it gets to be a little tiring at times.
5. What would you say is your greatest experience with your work?
COURTESY ANA GILMOUR

Any difficulties that I

I would say it is the allinclusive experience of being able to travel internationally. I lived in Morocco when I was 14; I traveled there to learn to jump and lived with my family, who were with

the State Department. The best for me is really the chance Ive been given to travel internationally and to see so many different cultures, all doing something that I just love, and something Im good at, that I have a natural talent at. I love my horses, I love what I do, I love my music, I love to play music my passion is international travel. And somehow it always happens. For me, thats amazing.

Vision therapy may correct some eye problems

BY TINKA DAVI

GOLD COUNTRY NEWS SERVICE

ur eyes, they say, are windows to the world and the most dominant of our senses. Most of our learning, perception, understanding and activities are processed through our eyes. Thats why, when we have vision problems, we need to visit an optometrist who is licensed to provide primary eye care services or an ophthalmologist, a medical doctor who specializes in eye and vision care. Often, glasses or surgery are the answer to correcting vision, but not always. When children or adults experience problems such as lazy eye, crossed eyes, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or vision problems due to a stroke or brain trauma, they should consider seeing a specialist in vision therapy. A certain percentage of patients have issues that glasses cant fix, said Dr. Leanne Liddicoat, O.D. of ClearVue Eye Care in Roseville. Roughly 50 percent of patients have eyes that dont work together and 50 percent have visual processing difficulties, she said. About 10-20 percent of people both adults and children have headaches, tired eyes, trouble staying on a line when reading, eye strain from using a computer and reading comprehension problems. They might be really smart, but when it comes to reading and writing, they have a hard time, Liddicoat said. Little pieces of the puzzle are missing; their two eyes arent working together. Liddicoat tells of 8-year-old Sara (not her real name), who was having problems in school. In conversation, I was amazed at her intellectual capacity, but she was not keeping up with her school work and the teacher said she was not copying things down from the board.

Sara had been diagnosed with ADHD and given medication, but after a few months, her mother said it wasnt working. Some of the behaviors of ADHD are the same as convergence deficiency, where the eyes dont work together, Liddicoat said.

I did diagnostic tests and found out Sara didnt have ADHD, and that completely changed her home life, Liddicoat said. Instead of medication, Sara was treated with vision therapy, a series of procedures that reteach the brain. According to Liddicoat, vision therapy begins with extensive tests, some of which are similar to those done during routine eye exams. When a visual problem is suspected, testing is expanded to try to uncover the underlying causes and to determine whether vision therapy might be helpful.

These types of exams and procedures are done at the Visual Skills Clinic, which is part of ClearVue Eye Care in Roseville. During therapy a wide variety of tools and approaches are employed depending on the specific need and customized patient plan. These can include the use of special therapeutic lenses and prisms, occluders or patches, specialized games, cards and other activities, computer software and hardware, physical challenges and biofeedback devices, Liddicoat said. The therapy is performed and overseen by optometrists who have

received additional, in-depth training and have been certified by the College of Optometrists in Vision Development (COVD). Vision therapists teach patients that they have control of what they see. They teach them how to move their eyes so they see one thing and its clear. They also teach the brain to remember and understand what they see, Liddicoat said. They work on eye-hand coordination and balance, helping patients understand where am I and where is everything else. Our vision guides us in how we move around, she said.

Liddicoat also works with stroke patients at Sutter Hospital, Roseville and recently spoke to the Stroke Recovery Group. Leanne Liddicoat There are significant visual problems after a stroke, she said. Liddicoat received her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Davis and her doctorate in Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley. In October, she earned her F.C.O.V.D. credential indicating fellowship in the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. She believes its important for parents who take children to an eye exam to look at different parts of the eye-care puzzle. They can go to an optometrist for glasses, an ophthalmologist for medical needs and a developmental optometrist for vision therapy, Liddicoat said. Its a very specialized area.

It can affect one or as many as all the teeth. One of the most common signs of periodontal disease is bad breath or halitosis. As dental disease progresses increased salivation, oral pain, and tooth loss can occur. In more advanced cases dental abscesses (tooth infection) can occur. It is also important to realize that periodontal disease can affect other organs in the body, like the heart and kidneys if left untreated. Some dogs are more commonly and severely affected by periodontal disease small breeds such as Dachshunds and Chihuahuas are especially prone to dental issues.

Once periodontitis occurs it is irreversible, but there are many things that can slow its progression. The first step in treatment of periodontal disease is a professional dental cleaning by your veterinarian. This is done under general anesthesia which allows your veterinarian and technician to thoroughly assess and clean all surfaces of each tooth including below the gum line. Once the teeth are cleaned a home care plan can be made to fit each patients individual needs. This

generally includes daily tooth brushing with animal specific enzymatic tooth pastes and veterinary formulated dental treats, chews or diets.

The fact is that you will age and change in 2013, and next year on 12-31-13 you will be slightly (or dramatically) different than you are today. Whats it like being a mom to an autistic child?

BY SENA CHRISTIAN

GRANITE BAY VIEW

im Christensens daughter wasnt potty trained until last year, after she turned 12 years old. The child didnt sleep through the night until the age of 9. The Granite Bay family rarely goes on vacation and only recently became brave enough to venture into public together for dinner. Its so hard to go out into the community and people stare at her and make rude comments and theres sometimes just not a lot of compassion, said Christensen, who gave up a career in the software industry to care for her daughter. Every trip outside could be a battle. One time Christensens daughter sat down in the middle of the busy Auburn-Folsom Road and Douglas Boulevard intersection and refused to budge. Theres also the hand-flapping to contend with and the unwanted looks the behavior draws. Brynne Christensen, 13, is autistic. Autism spectrum disorders range from mild to severe symptoms, skills and levels of impairment, according to the National Institute of Mental Health. Because Brynnes autism is so severe, I either see the best in people or the worst, and (the worst) is always the adults, Christensen said. In addition to managing Brynnes behavior, keeping her safe and living in a world that doesnt fully understand autism, her parents also deal with the ongoing struggle of giving her an education. Eureka Union School District is Brynnes home district

COMMON SIGNS OF AUTISM INCLUDE:

AUTISM: Mom says her two autistic sons are bright, but struggle with social situations
continued from page 43 District used to have a formal support group, but that ended during the brief tenure of former Superintendent Dr. Tim McCarty, who resigned in February 2011. Now parents are left to navigate the system alone. You really need to work to advocate for your child, said Lisa Erickson, of Granite Bay. No one comes to you and says, Here is the menu of services we have. You have to go out and find them. Two out of three of Ericksons sons have autism. Her youngest son, Cody, was diagnosed at 4 years old and hes been on an individualized education plan since preschool, which is mandated by the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act to define methods for reaching educational goals. Now in sixth grade at Ridgeview Elementary School, 11-year-old Cody gets good grades, is working hard to make friends, is fully verbal and becoming self-aware. But with self-awareness comes, why am I different? Erickson said. Her older son, Brandon, was diagnosed in first grade. Brandon, who taught himself to read at 3 years old, is now 14 and in eighth grade at Cavitt Junior High School and no longer requires
special education services. Next year, hell attend Granite Bay High School, which may present more challenges to address. His mom calls Brandon incredibly smart. That kid can take on the world, she said. But hes not very social and doesnt often get invited to birthday parties. Erickson worries about the impact of her two boys autism on her oldest son. The disorder can also strain marriages, she said, when partners neglect one another although recent studies refute the notion that parents of autistic children are more likely to divorce. Im thankful for autism because it has made me a better mom, a better parent, Erickson said. You really appreciate the little things like the first time Cody said he loved me.

No cure exists
When Brynne was 11 years old, her parents got a letter from the district stating their daughters special education services would be terminated and that she needed to be in school for the full day. Brynne had never attended school for an entire day before because of the severity of her behaviors.

Her parents hired a special education attorney to get her services reinstated. The lawsuit didnt go to trial, Christensen said, and both sides agreed to increase Brynnes school day depending on how well she was doing. As part of the plan, Brynne was not allowed to drop to the ground and stay there for more than five seconds, as shed done in the middle of that busy intersection. But one day her mom observed staff failing to correct her dropping behavior as agreed upon, so the parents filed a compliance complaint with the California Department of Education and won, Christensen said. Brynne now attends Placer Learning Center in Granite Bay. About 10 percent of a school districts student population requires special education services, said Eureka Unions Director of Student Services Kristi Ellison, a former principal who accepted her current position in 2011. Christensen sees Ellisons hiring as a move

forward for the district, which hasnt always had the best reputation when it comes to serving special needs children. School districts and society at large may need to figure out how to better serve autistic children because the disorder isnt going away anytime soon. Autism is the fastestgrowing serious developmental disability in the United States, affecting 1 in 88 children. A recent study by University of California scientists suggests fetal and infant exposure to pesticides, household chemicals and viruses partly explains the increased rate of autism over the past decade. Scientists are still searching for other explanations. No cure exists, only drugs to treat side effects such as anxiety. As for Christensen, she continues advocating for her daughter while fending off societal misunderstanding. But she cant do it all. I only have a limited amount of energy and I just cant direct it to educating people, she said.

COULD IPADS BE THERAPY FOR AUTISTIC KIDS?

Recent studies and news reports describe the iPad as a breakthrough therapy tool, transforming the lives of children with autism. According to a segment on 60 Minutes, the iPads easy touch, swipe screens and specially designed applications on language, eye contact, social cues and more are unlocking the isolation experienced by autistic people. During a Eureka Union School District board meeting in November, school board candidate-elect Renee Nash donated more than $22,000 worth of iPads to Ridgeview Elementary School in Granite Bay, which went to teacher Kellie Whitlows fifth/sixth grade class. Nash and her husband had donated another bulk of tablets to the school a couple years ago, which went to Abby Burkes fifth grade class. Nashs triplets are now in Burkes class and the teacher endorsed Nash and contributed $100 to her campaign. I specifically asked for the (second) donation not to go to a classroom my children are in, Nash told the Press Tribune. Id rather have other kids benefit from the (iPads). I wanted to do something that would benefit a lot of children, not just our children. Ridgeviews Parent Teacher Club, run jointly with Oakhills School, is among the wealthiest of all elementary and middle schools in Roseville and Granite Bay with assets of nearly $90,000. School board trustee Eric Bose said the first iPad donation did not follow proper protocol and was never formally approved. He said the board made sure to properly accept the donation the second time around. But for Granite Bay mother Kim Christensen, the second donation was still hurtful. I was like, what? Christensen said. That stung, I will be quite honest. She had tried for months to secure an iPad through the district for her autistic daughter, Brynne, after hearing about how the technology was being used for therapy. A Eureka employee suggested Brynne try an iPad, on loan, for a two-week trial. The results were promising, so the district suggested extending the timeframe and collecting more data. It seemed like so much bureaucracy, so much red tape. Christensen said. I didnt want to wait, so we just bought her one for Christmas. Although Nashs donation was unanimously approved by the board, Bose raised concerns about equal access and ensuring as many kids as possible benefit from the new technology. He also wanted reassurance that the district can afford the upkeep. The board was told the plan was to ultimately acquire iPad labs for each grade level at each campus, although no plan regarding this had ever been brought to the board for consideration, Bose told the Press Tribune.

t is easy to recognize those we see in our community with shiny awards and the customary accolades. So this month we want to recognize the strength and courage of one young man and his family as he has overcome a challenge of life. A consistent tummy ache and low grade fever that was misdiagnosed by several doctors to the point where one doctor told his mom that she was over-reacting when she pushed for more test and information lead to a horrifying discovery. On May 8, 2006, when Nick Lynch was just 8 years old, he was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer. Nick and his family were told that he would not live to see his ninth birthday. Through his moms persistence, family commitment and Nicks perseverance, Nick is now 15 years old, a freshman at Granite Bay High School and full of life like any other 15year-old boy. When you talk to Nick, as I did, you get a sense of a young man who knows his fortunes, appreciates his family and the many doctors and specialists that help him to overcome this life challenge, as they are the ones he points to as playing the biggest role in recovery. Having made over 50 trips back and forth to New Yorks Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, fighting through five rounds of chemotherapy and being treated with antibodies from a mouse, Nick

When asked about his future Nicks first word was outdoors. I want to do something outdoors like a park ranger. And if you know Nick you will understand his answer, as he enjoys nothing more than fishing and bird hunting ... oh, and building model RC airplanes. When you ask Nick if

he could change one thing in the world, he says that no kids would have to go through what I battled. To that end Nick has consistently participated in St. Baldricks, has been the keynote speaker at American Cancer Society (ACS) events, was survivor of the year for ACS Sacramento and spoke at bandofparents.org. When asked to name one person that he looks up to or admires, he took a long pause, but named no one person. It seems to me that in his battle there were just too many to name and he is too shy to name himself. I will do it for you Nick Lynch. You are without doubt and example of R.

Humble Wolf took the stage, getting an enthusiastic introduction from 98.5 Rock DJ Andy Hawk.

BAND: Humble Wolf finds bars in new cities to play at, but cracking the club scene is difficult
continued from page 49 As the audience cheered, Humble Wolf launched into the steady pop power-slides of its song Paper Thin. Drawing the audience to the stage, the band transitioned into the rockladen guitar march, Monster, with Angoves bright voice driving through waves of reverberation. Next in the line-up was Im Not Like You, a dark, soulful waltz of electric blues and menacing organ swirls. The song prompted two women in the audience to do an impromptu tango across the crowded dance floor. When the band switched gears by playing Through the Walls, Winger took center stage with an edgy and fevered guitar solo. Even when Humble Wolf offered a taste of country-twang with Life is a River, Kota kept the atmosphere high, his drum sticks slamming a strong, spirited beat full of contagious energy. Humble Wolf concluded the evening with the snarling acoustic jam, No Envy. The entire crowd danced as the

play in cities including Auburn and Woodland. But, as Albertson can attest, cracking the regional club scene can be difficult. Id really like to get Humble Wolf playing in Davis, the bass player told The Press Tribune. But so far it seems really locked in to a small rotation of groups. Albertson has a college degree in music business and brings a unique insight into how to navigate the nebulous industry of clubs and record labels. While he can list the challenges that face any band trying to make a name for itself, he doesnt think being from Roseville or Granite Bay is one of them. There is an underground Roseville music scene, he said. And you can see a lot of the talent the city has at open mics hosted by places like Shady Coffee and Tea. Winger agrees. If theres not a music scene in Roseville, then people are making one right now, the guitarist said. Fans of music just have to look for it. All four members of Humble Wolf refuse to let their fret-hands be tied behind their backs. Avoiding generic labels is helping them stand out in a crowded field of musicians. We just draw from a lot of different influences, Winger said. We run the spectrum of styles that we enjoy. The extreme diversity was one of the main things that pulled Kota into the band as well. The fact that they touch on so many different genres was one of the big draws for me, he said. The crowd never gets bored. I feel like when were up on stage what you get is something thats really fresh and fun.

metallic punch of Albertsons bass bounced along, throwing some serious low-end muscle on top of the kick drum. The show ended with rousing applause. Angove was happy with what hed seen. Ive always loved playing on Sutter Street, he said. The Powerhouse Pub is a really great venue. Humble Wolf continues to find new bars to

Participate, communicate and promote learning to show you care

Six simple ways to shine as a parent

Sheri Hitchings You and Your Kids

urray if youre an active parent in your childs school, especially if both parents work. Dont expect to be in the know if you are not involved. Your involvement shows your child you care. Find a way to help in the classroom, provide nutritious treats, come to meetings of the PTA, help at the carnival, do something for the teacher at home, etc. Be sure to ask the teacher for ways you can help.

for your child! Your help is appreciated. Dont miss class parties, plays, recitals, etc. Witnessing the sad face of a child without his parent present for class programs breaks your heart.

Be on top of homework
Knowing what your child is learning and studying in school is a necessity. Be on top of it! Expect homework. Know the weekly routine and be sure your child lives up to required responsibilities. Dont be afraid to help with homework, but do not do the homework. It is also recommended that you check the homework after your child completes it. It should be neatly done teachers shouldnt have

trouble reading the homework. Spelling should be corrected as well. If your child says there is no homework, make a point to find out if there was homework. If a problem exists, you need to ask the teacher for an individual teacher/parent homework check sheet. If there is a check sheet, have you seen it? Does it require your signature? If a pattern begins with, I dont have any homework! call or email the teacher and find out for yourself. Nipping a potential problem in the bud is well worth your effort. Remember, fulfilling the responsibilities and commitments in school are teaching your child good skills for life.

Identifying a learning problem

If your child spends hours on homework, which seems to be an easy task, it may be due to a learning problem. Likewise, if the homework is not challenging, discuss it with the teacher so it can be modified to meet his needs. Remember the saying, Two heads are better than one makes sense when it comes to your childs success.

Time is precious, use it wisely

You dont have to make it obvious, but make every experience some kind of a learning experience as well. For example, bring the measuring tape to the hardware store and have your child measure the wood you need to buy. In the grocery store, have your child weigh the vegetables and count the money to pay the bill. Dining out, have the child figure out the tip for the waiter.

Sweetheart getaways make the perfect Valentines gift

BY CARY ORDWAY

f youre looking for a lastminute Valentines Day gift, dont overlook the gift of travel. The beauty of giving a trip is that you get two chances to make a lasting impression on your Significant Other: 1) when you give the gift, and 2) when you use the gift. You dont necessarily have to use your Valentines lodging on Valentines weekend. In fact, youll probably get a better choice of accommodations and rates by booking your getaway for a weekend that is less busy. The best places fill up fast for Valentines Day. Whenever you end up going, its important to make the right choice you want something memorable, not just something you can get a good deal on. Sometimes, if youre lucky, you get both. In any event, weve hand-picked three experiences that we think would be ideal for a Valentines Day gift.

Dana Point
Dana Point is just a 90minute drive south of Los Angeles, yet seems like a completely different world with its coastline vistas, marina, quiet neighborhoods and plenty of nearby shopping. Our base of operations was the Laguna Cliffs Marriott Resort and Spa, an impressive resort built on the cliffs overlooking the Dana Point Harbor. All of the services and amenities you would expect were there a couple of resort-style restaurants, pools, Jacuzzis, tennis, a 2,500-square-foot fitness center and a modern spa offering a host of services including massages, body treatments and salon services. This 376-room resort had the feel of a comfortable beach hotel you might find in Hawaii. While the beach in this instance is a 15-minute walk, the hotels spacious rooms are done in bright, well-coordinated tropical colors. On the walls are 5-foot-high paintings of boats and beaches and surfers, all reminding you just where you are. If youre fortunate as we were to be in one of the coastal view rooms, your private lanai will overlook a portion of the harbor and coastline. This view probably will vary quite a lot from room to room, so if thats a major reason for staying here, be sure to be specific when you make your reservations. The grounds also are reminiscent of some Hawaii properties lots of well manicured palm trees and walkways on a tropically well-endowed 42 acres. That acreage includes a park adjacent to the hotel where you can find rolling lawns, picnic tables, walking paths and great ocean views

from the cliffs. Any visit to Dana Point will involve some time exploring the marina. Its not just a bunch of boats a whole village has grown up dockside to offer tourist shopping and places to enjoy lunch or dinner. Some 25 shops and 20 restaurants are open in Dana Wharf, Mariners Village and Mariners Alley. But the boats are a big part of it its fun strolling along the docks, daydreaming about owning one of these beautiful craft. For those not content to stay on the shore, there are charter fishing companies at Dana Point that will take you out fishing or just out to see the annual migration of whales. If youre able to spend an extra day or two, the Catalina Express offers direct service to Catalina for a day, or for an overnight stay on the island. Napa Valley Wine Train

This Valentines choice is not a hotel, but rather an experience youll never forget while visiting the beautiful Napa Valley. Whether you make a day trip from the Bay Area, or spend a few days at one of the local resort hotels, the Wine Train is a trip that is sure to wow your Significant Other. Its fitting that the Napa Valley Wine Train would be one of the most popular tourist attractions in a place that is the definition of elegance. And the visitor who boards the Wine Train gets a little taste of pampered rail travel think Orient Express for a fraction of what it would cost for the real thing. We stayed the night before in San Francisco, but we were still able to make our way to the Wine Trains station in Napa by about 10:30 a.m. to board the lunch train. The Wine Train also offers a dinner excursion, but that was fully booked when we called for reservations weeks ahead. The lunch train, though, has its advantages: the entire three-hour ride is in day-

light no matter the time of year, and it costs a little less. Once on board, its clear that the Wine Train has pulled out all the stops to make this as luxurious as possible. We settled down into plush chairs facing one another with a table in between. Others in our car sat in comfortable over-stuffed swivel chairs positioned side by side so that guests could constantly view the passing scenery or easily chat with one another. This particular rail car was styled in red and gold with natural wood accents, giving a sense of luxury and feeling quite different from a typical passenger car on, say, Amtrak. This is a historic rail car and, in fact, there is quite a history behind this train and railroad. The rail line was first built in 1864 by San Franciscos first millionaire, Samuel Brannan, and was used to take visitors to his new spa resort called Calistoga. In 1885, Southern Pacific bought the Napa Valley Railroad, which provided regular passenger service to the Napa Valley until the 1930s. It was used for freight for awhile after that, but it was not until 1987 that a group of concerned citi-

zens founded the Napa Valley Wine train and purchased locomotives and restored 1910era Pullman rail cars to provide the new service. During our three hours on board, we were treated to waves of meal and beverage service starting with wine (not included in your meal price, by the way), appetizers, salad, a main course which during our trip was a choice between salmon and a beef entre and dessert. Everything was exquisitely prepared and the presentations rivaled what you would find at an expensive gourmet restaurant. To learn more about the Napa Valley Wine Train, call (800) 427-4124 or go to www.winetrain.com.

Cambria
Residents of both southern and northern California will find that the coastal city of Cambria is in range for a special romantic getaway. If long walks along a driftwood-strewn beach are your idea of a trip to the sea, then Moonstone Beach in Cambria is probably a good candidate for your next outing to the Cal-

ifornia Coast. Cambria is a place where you can spend hours each day walking on the beach, on the boardwalk and through a quaint, historic artists colony chock-full of art galleries as well as unique shops and good restaurants. Cambria is in San Luis Obispo County and located in an area that gives visitors several options for short daytrips. The wineries are just a few miles east, Hearst Castle just a few miles north. Some of Californias best beaches are a short drive to the south. And San Luis Obispo is just a few miles south and inland. On our most recent trip to Cambria we discovered a charming group of cottages on Moonstone Beach that seem especially well suited to honeymoons or romantic getaways. There are just three Moonstone Cottages built on a small lot directly across the road from some of the best areas to explore on Moonstone Beach (so named because of the semi-precious agate and jasper stones that can be found in the sand). The cottages are not part of a big resort so you wont be sharing your getaway with oth-

er travelers. Aside from seeing their vehicles parked in front of their cottages, we never even saw our neighbors the entire time we were there. Each of the cottages is perfectly decorated with a lot of attention to detail. Theyre not huge, but quite adequate for a couple and have plenty of room to move around. We stayed in the Seascape, the cottage closest to the ocean with the best view, which included a fireplace and mini-kitchen with a refrigerator, microwave, sink and counter space. Outside, a well-maintained English garden added to the storybook feel and a small patio, chairs and table were available for simply sitting and watching the ocean surf and the visitors walking the nearby beach trails. A mature cypress tree framed the cottage, completing the illusion this little lodging is straight out of Hansel and Gretel. For more information on Moonstone Cottages, call (805) 927-1366 or go to www.moonstonecottages.com. For more information on travel in California, please visit www.californiaweekend.com.
