FINAL MAJOR PROJECT STATEMENT OF INTENT

Name: Stephanie Lawson Blog Address: www.sl-lawson1013fmp.blogspot.com Rationale Within the Final Major project module I intend on producing a well considered, thought out and conceptually driven quantity of work, which reflects a level of professionalism and my focus for design within and for the Retail Environment . My design work will display my interests within Illustration and be reflected within my print production driven design solutions. Through producing work for the retail sector I hope to gain a substantial body of work through carefully considering my chosen briefs. Alongside this I hope to obtain a balance of skills through a range of design solutions which will include designing for Packaging, Advertising, Promotional, Surface Pattern and interior product design material. Subjects / Themes Designing for the retail sector allows me to focus my design solutions on a large range of themes, a more specific array of themes can be identified through my carefully considered array of briefs. I have written, adapted and chosen my briefs in accordance to my interests within: Home Interior Design Product design for the Highstreet Educational Sector Products with a Print Focus

More specifically the subjects I intend to work on within my Final Major project include: Stationary & Giftware Food and Drink Interior Design Surface Pattern Language and Phonetics

Design Disciplines / Creative Development

Within the module OUGD303 I intend on investigating and exploring conceptual development, focusing my briefs to be concept led rather than product led, by exploring a range of avenues and driving my focus and interest toward the outcome of well thought out, considered and evaluated research. With a strong concept led body of work within my portfolio, it will help me in the communication stages of talking to professionals and designers about my work and gaining interest. This is another important area of the practice I want to

concentrate on, retaining existing contacts, and gaining new ones through a range of studio visits, placements and events. The exploration and us of printing processes I believe is an important element to my work, and my style, so I intend on pushing my knowledge and use of in college processes, along with contacting professional printers, to gain professionally printed products, and contacts.

Audiences and contexts within my chosen briefs: Children ages 5 10 and their parents (10 things you should know about brief, focusing on educating children at home) Home makers / home owners ( in relation to Laura Ashley brief, Targetting Upper class women aged 20 50, and Be-Ro rebrand and packaging brief) Young working proffesionals aged 25 35 (Douwe Egberts Coffee engaging a younger audience to use their products, Doing my nut in special edition, Camping engaging a younger audience to be interested in camping within the UK) Shoppers, more specifically Woman of an upper class ages 20 50 (Paperchase Collection and UK.

Practical Skills / Workshops what, why and when? Illustration Style Through producing an array of illustrations for a selection of briefs, it will give my portfolio a varied approach to image design. Several of my briefs need image work which I intend on producing, with different considerations regarding style. This will be developed through the use of a sketchbook. Laser cutting Attending an induction and utilising the skills within my briefs, in a range of methods and range of materials. To be used with several of my briefs, to be pushed further into wax sealing and book covers. Binding Learning new, more sustainable binding methods for realistic use, rather than show. Learning through doing, practising on drafts and a range of materials, to then use for a final product. To give my publication a professional quality bind. Printed surface textile design I have come to realise that my illustration style could be pushed further into interior design and surface pattern textile design. It is a direction I would really favour my work going in, as I have an interest for working within retail. Alongside this will come printing processes, the application of surface pattern to product.
