Course Overview - Physics C Courses

The AP Physics C: Mechanics correspond to approximately a semester of college work. The course will utilize guided inquiry and student centered and will use introductory differential and integral calculus throughout the course. The course will provide instruction in each of the following six content areas from the classical era [C1- C6]: kinematics; Newtons laws of motion; work, energy and power; systems of particles and linear momentum; circular motion and rotation; and oscillations and gravitation. Each student will have the opportunity to learn from lecture, problem-solving, laboratory experimentation, group work, and solo effort. Science classes meet five periods a week (45 minutes). Two of these periods have additional time C7 - Course Requirement 7: (75 minute period) for laboratories. [C7] The course utilizes guided Grades will be determined on the following criteria: Section Laboratories / Notebooks: 35% Section Tests / Homework: 35% Term Exams: 30%
inquiry and studentcentered learning to foster the development of critical thinking skills.

Tests and Homework Quizzes will be assigned weekly for each section, coming primarily from the textbook, and will focus on problems similar to those taken from AP released exams. Section Tests consist of multiple-choice questions, free-response problems, and questions based on lab experiments completed during that unit.

Each comparable to a semesterlong, college level physics student will complete a lab notebook and create a portfolio of lab laboratory. Students spend reports. Unit Laboratories Experiments (listed at the end of this a minimum of 20 percent syllabus) will follow a standard model consisting of: of instructional time Title: engaged in laboratory Objective: work. A hands-on Equipment Needed: laboratory component is required. Each student Procedure: should complete a lab Data Tables: notebook or portfolio of lab Calculations: reports. Results: Conclusions: By the end of the course the student will be able to: Design experiments; Observe and measure real phenomena; Organize, display and critically analyze data; Analyze sources of error and determine uncertainties in measurement; Draw inferences from observations and data; and Communicate results, including suggested ways to improve experiments and proposed questions for further study. The lab book will contain the typed report formatted as sated above. Lab books will be collected at the conclusion of each term for grading. On line sources and interactive demonstrations {PHET} will be utilized to augment computer and internet assisted modeling of physics ideas and concepts. A student weekly show- n-tell will utilize journals, magazines and articles to highlight new ideas in science. Laboratories will primarily utilize Vernier systems of data collection with an air track and or everyday items such as an F-150 Ford pickup.
