Introduction
Mining is growing at an every day more rapid pace and it is requiring larger and more efficient equipment. As well as that, the industry is finding deposits in places that call upon them to cover longer distances and more and more complex routes. In this sense, transport of bulk minerals has had to develop more and more complex engineering methods that even contemplate manifold vertical and horizontal sections to cover these extensive distances. On the other hand, the general lowering of mineral concentrations requires it to increases the rate of extraction and thus the amount of material transported from the mine to the treatment plants, and even to increase the flow between different processes. An ideal method to transport material long distances is with conveyor belts, a system of transport of solid material whose use is common in many different stages in the productive process in mining. Mineral transport is continuous, formed basically by a band that moves between two drums, as is the case in the processing of crushed and ground materials that use conveyor belts of different capacities and characteristics. With this in mind the Studies Research Department of Editec S.A. (publishing house of Minera Chilena magazine) took the decision to include in its product range an investigation dedicated particularly to this subject. The present document registers information about conveyor belts and their technical characteristics at projects selected from metallic, and non-metallic mining areas (cement companies). The first edition of this Conveyor Belts Survey is published as a special edition in the existing Mining Equipment Survey 2007-2009, a book that records the most important equipment in the mining industry. As of 2009, and with the next edition of this book, conveyor belts will be including within the machinery register.

METHODS The present study registers belts used by the big mining companies in Chile, as well as cement companies. The information collecting process was made through a survey that went to the executive personnel of plants, maintenance departments and/or supplying areas. Of the 32 projects included in the survey, 56% supplied the requested data, that is to say, 18 co-operated with the study.
