Question 1 (10 pts) A refrigerator used for cooling food in a grocery store is to produce a 10,000 kJ/h cooling effect, and it has a coefficient of performance of 1.35. How many kilowatts of power will this refrigerator require to operate?

Question 2 (10 pts) The pressure in an automobile tire depends on the temperature of the air in the tire. When the air temperature is 25C, the pressure gage reads 210 kPa. If the volume of the tire is 0.025 m3, determine: (a) the pressure rise in the tire when the air temperature in the tire rises to 50C, and (b) the corresponding change in specific entropy. Assume atmospheric pressure is 100 kPa and that specific heats are constant with temperature.

Question 3 (10 pts) A room contains air at 1 atm, 30C, and 40 percent relative humidity. Using the psychrometric chart, determine (a) the specific humidity, (b) the enthalpy, in kJ/kg dry air, (c) the wet-bulb temperature, (d) the dew-point temperature and (e) the specific volume of the air, in m3/kg dry air.

Question 4 (10 pts) A heat pump using R-134a as the working fluid and operating on the ideal vapor-compression refrigeration cycle is to maintain a space at 30C while operating its evaporator at 400 kPa. Assume a temperature difference of 10C is required for the transfer of heat in the condenser. Determine (a) the enthalpies of the refrigerant at the compressor inlet, condenser inlet, and throttle exit, and (b) the COP of the system. Use the P-h diagram for refrigerant 134 in the equation sheet to get the properties of refrigerant.

Question 5 (10 pts) How do the following quantities change when the simple ideal Rankine cycle is modified with regeneration? Assume the mass flow rate through the boiler is the same. For each of the following, indicate if it would increase, decrease, or remain the same. Also, sketch the processes involved on a T-s diagram in relation to the vapor dome. a) b) c) d) e) Pump work input Turbine work output Heat supplied Heat rejected Moisture content at turbine exit

Question 6 (10 pts) Steam at 0.4 MPa and 400C is expanded to 30 kPa in an adiabatic turbine with an isentropic efficiency of 92%. Determine the power produced by this turbine, in kW, when the mass flow rate is 2 kg/s.

Question 7 (10 pts) Argon at 200 kPa and 100C is in a piston and cylinder with an initial volume of 0.05m3. It is heated until its temperature reaches 200C. (a) What was the work done by this system? (b) How much heat was transferred in the process? Assume ideal gas.

Question 8 (10 pts) An air and water vapor mixture at 1 atm, 40C and 20% relative humidity flows into a heat exchanger at a rate of 10 kg dry air per second. Heat is removed at a rate of 300 kJ/s. (a) What is the exit temperature of the air and water vapor mixture? (b) Will there be condensation? (c) Sketch the process on a T-s diagram.

Question 9 (10 pts) An ideal Otto cycle engine has a compression ratio of 8. The air prior to the compression stroke is at 95 kPa and 310 K. (a) What is the thermal efficiency of this engine? (b) What is the pressure of the air after the compression stroke? (c) Would a diesel cycle engine with the same compression ratio have a higher or lower thermal efficiency? Assume cold air standard.

Question 10 (10 pts) An ideal Rankine cycle operates between 1.7 kPa and 800 kPa. The maximum temperature in the system is 600C. (a) What is its thermal efficiency? (b) Would the thermal efficiency be greater than, less than, or equal to the Carnot efficiency? (c) For what application is the Rankine cycle used?
