Matters of the heart

Many of our thoughts go to love and romance in February, thanks to Valentines Day. It brings a little warmth to a very cold month, doesnt it? The heart is the universal symbol of love, which is probably why the American Heart Association chose this month to observe American Heart Month. And, from the following statistics, heart health may not be getting the love it deserves in our country:
1 in every 4 deaths (about 600,000) in the United States every

year is attributable to heart disease.1 Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.1 Almost 1,000,000 Americans have a heart attack every year.1 Coronary heart disease costs the United States $108.9 billion each year.1 The average total cost of a severe heart attack including direct and indirect costs is about $1 million, and close to $760,000 for a less severe attack.2

Now consider that the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in our country by a long shot is medical expenses!3 (78% of those who filed did have insurance, by the way.) All of this certainly provides a lot of motivation to take better care of ourselves. No wonder the American Heart Association is behind a nationwide movement in support of healthier communities and healthier lives! Help honor American Heart Month by making your health and well-being a priority. Theres only one you, lets make it the best you possible! What inspired my rant above was the article submitted this month by Dr. Jake Shuppe, who writes about a delicious solution to the nations heart health dilemma. Kyle Smith also shares some ways to love your heart, one of which may surprise you: acupuncture. And, Brian Bankenbusch offers reasons you may want to use

a personal trainer in maintaining or re-gaining your health. These are just a few examples of the great articles we have to share with you this month. Please read on for more! Heres to healthier communities and healthier lives take good care of yourself! In health and happiness,

very year, 600,000 people die from heart disease in our country! According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it accounts for one out of every four deaths. It is the leading cause of death for both men and women; not to mention the leading cause of bankruptcy. According to an article from the National Business Group on Health, the average total cost of a severe heart attack including direct and indirect costs is about $1 million. Direct

costs include charges for hospitals, doctors and prescription drugs, while the indirect costs include lost productivity and time away from work. The average cost of a less severe heart attack is about $760,000. Thats $50,000 per year for 20 years for a severe heart attack and $38,000 per year for a less severe heart attack. You might argue that insurance will pay for a large part of the direct costs, but whatever assumptions you make about those costs, youre still looking at an enormous amount of money. I dont

mean to be grim with all these statistics, but it is important to face reality, and its what you can expect if you arent taking care of yourself. Alright, so now that we are all quite aware of the consequences of heart disease, what can we do to help prevent or reverse it? There is no question that nutrition is the single most important factor in the prevention of coronary artery disease, says Thomas Barringer, MD, the medical director of the Center for Cardiovascular Health at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, N.C. It definitely comes down to nutrition. I agree with Dr. Barringer 100%, and heres where Im going to blow your mind. Want to know a good way to improve heart health? Consume beef and dairy products! Some of you may be thinking that Im off my rocker, but the facts are proven through history and confirmed by science. However, Im not talking about just any beef or dairy. I am talking about 100% grass-fed cattle. The fats in animals that are fed grains (not their natural food source) become denatured and harmful in the body. The hundreds of articles linking commercial red meat to cancer and heart disease have consistently studied the impact of grain-fed meats on the human body and overlooked the incredible benefits when consumed in their natural state (grass-fed). Grass-fed beef and dairy are high in omega-3 fats and important vitamins like

ooibos is an herb from South Africas Western Cape Province. It is naturally caffeine-free and has been enjoyed for generations by the Khoisans, a tribe of South African Bushmen. The broom-like legume comes in both red and green varieties. Once the bushes, which are actually green, are cut down into small pieces, they are laid out to dry for the red variety. The intense sunlight slowly turns the rooibos into a rich, dark red color and gives it a slightly sweet taste.

The green variety is not oxidized and is processed in a manner similar to that of green tea, making the end product a bit more expensive, but loaded with twice the flavonoids as the red. The flavor can be described as malty and slightly grassy. The refreshing taste and health benefits of rooibos have turned it into a favored choice for tea lovers all over the world. According to the article, Rooibos Tea Benefits: More Than Just Antioxidants! by Kim Lam, rooibos tea is considered to be

high in antioxidants with large levels of flavonoids, which may reduce the risk of cancer and offer cardiovascular support. Two of those flavonoids, quercetin and luteolin, are effective in preventing free radical damage, may be potent treatment for tumors, prevent cancer cell formation and may help to guard the body against damage created by radiation. Rooibos is thought to decrease bad cholesterol, raise good cholesterol and keep

biorhythm and our lives ...............................................................

by Dr. Joanne Flanagan
e all experience days when we wake up in the morning feeling full of energy and excited about what we are going to be doing this wonderful day to reach the goals we have planned for ourselves. We look good, feel excellent and our thoughts are very positive about everything around us. We feel that nothing can prevent us from achieving everything we want to accomplish concerning work, school, family, relationships, exercise, etc. Then suddenly, a few days later, even though we have been doing everything exactly the same way, eating the same, sleeping the same and in the same environment, for no apparent reason something just isnt right. We have little or no energy, feel weak, cant concentrate, feel irritable, look bad and so on. Some feel this more than others. What is happening? we may wonder. One explanation for these ups and downs of life comes from an area of study called biorhythm, which concerns the behavioral science of life-energy rhythms. There are many rhythms familiar to each of us. The night/day rhythms (24 hours); the seasonal rhythms (spring, summer, fall, winter); the annual rhythms (365.25 days per year); the rhythms of the moon (29.5 days) these and many others affect each of us differently. Within the past century, it has been scientifically proven that we have three energy cycles, or biorhythms. These three biorhythms begin in the positive phase at the moment of birth and continue regularly thereafter until death. The three cycles are: the physical, which lasts 23 days; the sensitivity/emotional, which lasts 28 days; and the intellectual/mental, which lasts 33 days. There is no bad news with biorhythm, only information. The first 11.5 days of the physical biorhythm cycle are considered to be the positive half. During this high period, we give off energy with a prodigality that peaks around the sixth day from the start of the cycle. At this point we are the strongest, can work out the hardest and have more endurance than during the rest of the cycle. We are also more resistant to disease, better coordinated and generally in better physical condition. During the second 11.5 days of the physical cycle, sometimes called the negative half, the body recharges while energy accumulates. Naturally, we tire more easily, need more rest and find it hard to train vigorously. During this period, we are more likely to
10
Natures Pathways | February 2013

experience a physical slump, since we are weaker and more vulnerable to disease. The body begins gathering strength for a return to the high side of the cycle. If we are in good physical condition, no mishaps or illnesses should occur we will merely experience a simple reduction in physical potential. It is only during the critical days of the cycle, when the rhythm is changing from positive to negative or vice versa, that the physical rhythm becomes so erratic and unstable that extra caution becomes a necessity. It should be very obvious that if you are training and/or competing, it is very important to become aware of your 23-day physical biorhythm. The 28-day sensitivity (emotional) cycle controls the nervous system and affects disposition, mood and coordination. During the first 14 days, the positive phase, we are inclined to react in positive and constructive ways to most events. Since we get along better with others and with ourselves during this phase, this first half of the sensitivity cycle proves to be the best time for undertaking projects requiring cooperation, a positive attitude and creativity. This period is great for socializing. Because the emotional cycle is a powerful and pervasive one, it can modify both the physical and the intellectual cycles more than you might expect. In a period of physical decline combined with an emotional peak, even training or athletic performance may be up to par, simply because of the very positive attitude generated during the apex of the emotional phase. This is particularly true in mind sports, such as powerlifting, bodybuilding or running, where concentration and determination are extraordinarily important. The strengths of the sensitivity rhythms influence are also apparent in intellectual and creative endeavors. It is reasonable to think that during the negative part of the intellectual cycle, it will be difficult to achieve any major insights or to produce especially viable ideas. However, if that same period is one of an emotional high, the ideas and insights may flow in a virtual tidal wave. Interestingly, the sensitivity rhythm is the easiest of the three to track, since each of us is usually a good judge of his or her own feelings. Even skeptics about biorhythm admit to an awareness of regular fluctuations in their emotions. In its 14-day negative phase, the emotional rhythm can result in very dangerous results, since feelings affect judgment. The days
www.naturespathways.com

during which we recharge our emotional powers are poor ones for performing dangerous jobs. Critical sensitivity days carry much more danger than the days of the negative phase. They leave us open to self-inflicted harm. An emotionally critical day, particularly when it is combined with a critical day in either the physical or intellectual cycle, definitely calls for taking all available precautions. The final phase, the intellectual/mental cycle, originates in the brain and takes 33 days to complete. It affects intelligence, reasoning and comprehension powers. The first 16.5 days, or the positive phase, is a good time for self-improvement through reading and education, since our minds are more open, retentive and our understanding is at its best. On the other hand, during the negative, or low phase, most of us find it harder to concentrate or think things through with maximum clarity. When we are in the center of a biorhythm cycle, be it up or down, we undergo a spin period, a phase that may be just as serious as a critical period. The relative strength of the physical, emotional and intellectual biorhythms varies among individuals. It is foolish to generalize about which rhythms in which phases will dominate other rhythms and phases, and this problem complicates the question of interpreting mixed days. Heredity and talent help explain these differences. A natural bodybuilder (i.e., one who has inherited great genetics and physical strength) places much more emphasis on the physical cycle than other bodybuilders, and in the case of the professional competitor, this emphasis is even stronger. What we are as a result of inherited characteristics will strengthen one or another of our

biorhythms; and what we do because of our talents will affect our life. The individual ways that we have developed to deal with the stress of biorhythms also modify the effects of those biorhythms. To find out to what degree your personal biorhythms affect you, I would suggest the following: Keep a daily diary for one month. Record your feelings, physical strength and endurance, ability to concentrate on training, positive or negative attitude, how you are performing your daily normal tasks and other observations about yourself. You may then have a personal yearly biorhythm chart done for you, and compare your findings. You will be surprised! Biorhythm is a means for you to have a sense of predictability and control over your training, dieting, relationships and life in general. Studies I have seen from all over the world have impressed not only me but also many others as well. The fact that some of the results conflict is not new or unusual. Biorhythm is as controversial as supplement use, methods of training and judging bodybuilding contests. Regardless, the most recent research indicates a number of findings. First, more calories are burned when individuals are in the positive position of the physical cycle, which suggests that dietconscious individuals should cut caloric intake during the negative phase. Second, most sports injuries generally occur on biorhythmic critical or mini-critical days. Third, from an accident prevention viewpoint, it is better to be negative physically (because of overconfidence) and not on either a critical or mini-critical day. Two thousand Japanese companies use biorhythms to predict when their workers will perform most efficiently and safely and

Does your pet have kidney or liver disease? ..................................................................

by Dr. Jodie

dog or cat can be born with kidney or liver disease, or develop it later in life. Disorders of these organs are all too common. Prevention and successful management is best accomplished with a little knowledge of when and how to test for dysfunction. By the time abnormalities show up on blood tests, a pets kidneys would be only 25% functional. Its amazing how much a first morning urine analysis can tell you! Before your dog drinks water or eats breakfast, catch a voided urine. Stick a shallow pan in the urine stream to collect the sample. Store it in the refrigerator until you can take it to the vet. Accurate results will be most likely if the urine specimen is evaluated within two hours of collection. (The longer urine sits outside the body before reading, the higher the pH will elevate and the more likely crystals will form in the stagnant urine.) Why is a first morning collection best? Most normal dogs do not drink water overnight. So, the first urine of the day, before

drinking, should be the most concentrated, meaning the urine specific gravity should be >1.040. Lack of concentrating ability would be a level from 1.012 to 1.018. Less than this level is often due to increased water consumption and the kidneys appropriate response to remove excess fluid by diluting the urine. For example, if you feed your new puppy salty treats, he will drink a lot, produce dilute urine and probably a few accidents! This kidney response is perfectly normal. If you feel your pet is drinking more than normal or urinating larger volumes, request a urine analysis that includes checking the specific gravity. Feline urine is normally so concentrated that a first morning check is not necessary. If it is dilute, you should be concerned. Additional testing can determine the cause and prognosis of the kidney disease. Sometimes a pet that has excessive thirst or urine volume has another disorder, such as diabetes, Cushings or even liver disease. A basic serum blood chemistry testing is used to diagnose liver disease. Surely if a pet has inappetance, nausea or vomiting, diagnostic blood work should be performed. These are signs of a variety of disorders, including liver disease. Two measurable liver enzymes are called ALT or SGPT, and SAP or alk phos. In dogs and cats, ALT is liver specific. This means if elevated, there is liver cell damage. The SAP is not liver specific. If SAP is elevated, it may be due to liver disease, stress, Cushings, arthritis, pancreatitis, hypothyroidism or a bone tumor. Obviously, this can be frustrating for a veterinarian to decipher and for a pet guardian to accept. Elevations of the liver-related enzymes can wax and wane over time as well. Even though ALT confirms liver cell damage, the causes and prognosis can vary tremendously. A puppy or kitten can be born with a congenital kidney or liver disease. These problems are permanent, but often can be managed

for quite some time. However, procedures such as anesthesia are a greater risk for pets with unknown underlying organ dysfunction. This is one reason why pre-anesthetic blood work is so important. Coco, a six-month-old Yorkie was diagnosed with hepatic (liver) microvascular dysplasia after a pre-anesthetic blood screening (before his neuter surgery) revealed an elevated ALT. If this condition had not been caught, it is very possible that Coco would not have awakened from his anesthetic episode. Instead, a special anesthetic protocol was administered, liver supportive supplements and a balanced commercial raw food diet were fed to Coco, and he lived to be 13 years old! Fluffy, a 14-year-old feline, was producing large urine clumps. His urine was dilute and his blood kidney tests were elevated. Fluffy was fed a commercial raw diet with added warm water, probiotics and two whole food supplements. He lived a quality life until he passed at 20 years of age. Fluffy and Cocos supplements contained herbals and glandulars that were kidney and liver supportive. Early recognition and intervention with healthy food and organ-specific nutrients contributed to improved quality of life and increased longevity for both of our furry friends!

B12 and E, but I want to focus on a very powerful heart-health nutrient called conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). CLA is an essential nutrient and is also called rumenic acid because it is made in the rumen of cud-chewing animals. CLA is found in meat and milk, but it is most highly concentrated in milk fat. This is another reason to pass on the skim and low-fat dairy products. According to studies from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, CLA has been shown to markedly lower total cholesterol and triglycerides. It also improved LDL:HDL cholesterol ratios and reduced human platelet aggregation that is so significant in strokes. Food products from grass-fed sources contain much more CLA than those from grain-fed animals. In fact, meat and dairy products from grass-fed animals can produce 300-500% more CLA than those of cattle fed the usual diet of grain. After reading the statistics on crippling disease care costs, there is no longer validation that we cant afford to buy healthy foods like organic fruits, vegetables, grass-fed beef and dairy. The truth is, we cant afford not to! My philosophy is that you can pay for it now on your own terms or pay a LOT more later on somebody elses terms. You decide.

blood pressure low. Preliminary studies demonstrate that drinking rooibos tea may increase glucose tolerance and improve insulin production in the pancreas. It is frequently used to heal respiratory illness; the flavonoid content of the tea seems to act as both a bronchodilator and an antispasmodic. The alkaline extract of rooibos tea appears to help suppress the HIV virus. (Note that drinking rooibos tea alone, however, has not shown the same effect; just the alkaline extract.) A study found that rooibos may have a compelling effect on age-related brain degeneration. Rooibos contains calcium, fluoride and manganese, all of which help preserve healthy bones and teeth. + Other minerals in rooibos are iron, potassium, copper, zinc, magnesium and alpha hydroxy. Rooibos tea can be consumed by kidney stone sufferers because it has no oxalic acid. It can be used to ease colic or stomach pains in infants for instant relief. It is a great thirst-quencher for athletes and can calm hyper children. Other studies find that rooibos is effective at preventing brain aging. As you can see, rooibos tea has a multitude of health benefits that can sustain a better life existence as well as increase the quality of your life. The value of what you take into your body also increases your minds ability to deal with issues on a daily basis. Both of these can then make each day more enjoyable, so have a cup or two of rooibos and live a happy, healthy and long life!

The first half (upper portion) of each cycle is a period of energy release. Physical endurance (P) is at its peak, cheerfulness and optimism prevail (S), and reasoning powers and creativity are increased (I). During the second half (lower portion) of each cycle, or energy recharge period, individuals tend to have less energy, be more sensitive and have difficulty concentrating. When energy cycles change from + (energy release) to (energy recharge), there is a substantial cutback in each of our energy systems and one experiences a critical or caution day. On the biorhythm graph, any day of any cycle that crosses the dividing centerline is a critical day. The probability is very strong that a person will have a subpar day and be more subject to injury on those days. The peaks and valleys of each cycle are called mini-critical days. Although some difficulty may be experienced on these days, they are not as potentially difficult as critical days. Combination days are any days that are simultaneously a critical or mini-critical day in any combination.

In fact, their entire transportation industry is based on biorhythm. From airline pilots to bus drivers, workers are alerted to their critical times, and accident rates have been reduced tremendously, more than 60% according to some studies. Many other studies involving human error have been conducted, and the results show an amazing correlation for safety and awareness of biorhythms. With all of the persuasive evidence favoring the efficacy of biorhythm awareness, it is surprising that the theory is not used more often in the fields of industrial safety, traffic control, medicine and athletics. When it is used, the statistics are not made public. Perhaps the reason biorhythm has yet to be applied as extensively in the United States as it is in Switzerland and Japan is because such studies are complicated and costly. Whatever the case, it is always important to keep an open mind and improve in every way possible. Biorhythms just may give you that extra edge!

Top reasons to work with a personal trainer ......................................................................

by brian bankenbusch, cscs, ces, Pes
ost people who walk into a gym or studio are walking in with a personal goal for themselves. This goal can range anywhere from weight loss to sports performance to rehabilitation. Everyone has their reasons for coming to the gym to work out. It can be that your doctor has mandated you to workout so you may improve your health. It can be that you are training for a sport or a race. It can even be for social reasons and wanting to make new friends. Everyone also has their reasons for avoiding the gym. These reasons could include being embarrassed of possibly looking foolish doing an exercise incorrectly, or maybe even feeling self-conscious about your appearance. For all of the reasons to go and not go to the gym, a personal trainer is the person to guide you in the right direction. Trainers are there to help people feel comfortable about what they are doing and, of course, to help them reach their goals. The easy part is setting a goal, but the hard part is achieving it. Achieving any goal requires a detailed and progressive plan of action. The best person to approach to lay out any health and fitness plan is a personal trainer. Here are six reasons a trainer can help you reach your goal:

working out than just lifting weights or doing cardiovascular exercise. Having an in-depth knowledge of how the human body works is crucial to setting up the most effective program to achieve your goals. It is a trainers job to understand what you should and should not be doing.

A trainer can make sure you are performing exercises with the correct form. Getting injured will only push your goal further away. They can teach you how the body works during exercise, what muscles you are using and why you do certain exercises for certain goals. The next time you walk into a gym, no matter what the reason is that brought you there, find a trainer and talk with them. They will help you set up the correct path for your goal, keep you on track with that path and motivate you to achieve your goal. Keep in mind that when you are looking for a personal trainer, they should have certain credentials to show their knowledge base and experience. Having peace of mind that your trainer can provide you with the correct information and knowledge of the human body is crucial for long lasting success. Look for trainers that have a college degree in exercise science or a nationally recognized certification.

Do you love your pet with food? ...................................................

by kathleen Folz & Jordan stamper
alentines Day, birthdays, other holidays and special occasions often include gifts of food for those we love. Many people give their animal companions special treats on these days too. We love them and want to see our dogs, cats and other critters happy, but giving them too many treats is an easy habit to get into. Feeding too many or unhealthy treats can lead to behavioral problems, obesity and other health issues. We may need to ask ourselves, Am I loving my pet with food? There are many ways to let our pets know we love and appreciate their companionship. Consider three things when you feel the need to give your pet a treat.

amount of food and how active is your pet? When planning your pets daily diet, consider the treats you and family members give, too. You may be surprised at how much your dog or cat really gets each day. If you discover everyone is giving treats throughout the day, it may help to measure out your pets food and an appropriate amount of treats so all family members can see what should be given in a day. Set aside the treats your pet may have in a day and ask the family not to exceed that amount. Knowing how much and what your pet consumes may be helpful information to provide to the veterinarian at the annual check-up or when your pet is ill.

cat, according to Wikipedia is a traditional Hawaiian practice that dates back several thousands of years. It was taught by the elders (kupuna) and shamanistic healers who were deemed worthy to carry on the tradition. The training began during their childhood. Within each village, lomi was taught and experienced to achieve both spiritual and physical health. Lomis huna (philosophical nature) is predominantly a spiritual connectedness, an unadulterated, pure, sincere intention of love. The healing was so profound and genuine that many of the visitors to the islands who observed the healing art first hand were impressed, but also frightened. There was a time when Hawaiians were denied the right of this practice. In the early 18th century, a group of missionaries, who witnessed the healing practice and the profound effects, had determined that lomi had no place among the people of the islands. As this unrest continued, it escalated to the point that it became a political issue, which led to changes in the government. The new government standards were put in place to ward out these unhealthy practices. People fear what they do not understand. In 1893, lomi was banned along with all healing arts. Hawaiians were banned from studying and speaking their language. They were also denied hula dancing. Lomi practitioners faced severe punishment if they were discovered practicing their healing art. The Hawaiian natives were defiant and continued to practice their culture and beliefs in secret. Lomi continued to be practiced, but in their own circles. No law was going to stop them from passing down lomi and their connection to spirit. After 70 years, the laws were changed again, reinstating the right to practice the healing art of lomi and their other traditions openly with reverence and love of their traditional beliefs and culture. Margaret Machado, affectionately known as Auntie Margaret, was instrumental in this fight for reinstatement. She was honored for her love and passion. Auntie Margaret welcomed and embraced all individuals

from all cultures or origins who wanted to learn lomi. Her teachings of the practice, now known as lomilomi, continue to flourish today, branching out to the Americas, Europe and Asia. Auntie Margaret has since retired, but her daughter, Nerita, has continued where she left off, teaching with love and reverence from the heart. A lomilomi session is booked for two hours in order to receive the full benefit. Traditionally there is praying with the client. Physically, the long gliding strokes of effleurage are replaced with light flowing strokes, like the movement of the palm trees when their leaves are delicately caressed by the warm trade winds of Hawaii. There is pressing and squeezing of muscles. Warm stones are used to massage the extremities on the front and back of the body as well as the dcollet. The warm stones are aligned alongside the spine for a gentle, nurturing treatment. There is soft range of motion for the legs and shoulders. During the massage, the stones are tucked at various points for pain relief and left on the body for that nurturing feeling. Healing energy is sent to the client, who is encouraged to rest and absorb the energy from the stones. Consider a lomilomi massage to experience the healing art of Hawaii that has stood the test of time. Aloha!

communicate with us as endless requests for food. They meow, wag tails and are generally very happy when we reach for the treat jar. We dont want to see them walk away seemingly unhappy when they dont get a treat. We are happy when a friend brings us a snack, but we are also happy when our friend spends time talking or sharing an activity we enjoy. Our animal companions enjoy those things too. When they come to us for attention, we must remember that there are more choices than just giving them a treat. Interact with your dog or cat by encouraging them to find and fetch a toy, learning some new tricks, taking an extra walk with your dog or playing actively with a catnip toy attached to a wand with your indoor cat. Provide treat dispensing toys that require your dog or cat to work to get the treat out. If youd rather be settling in for a movie, use that time for brushing your pet. Grooming and massaging your pet are great ways to bond. Choosing the right treats in the right amounts and keeping your pet active are wonderful ways to show them you love them! Keeping them healthy is a great way to share the human/animal bond for many years!

An inspirational life ..............................................................

by Tony bednarowski
(iMAGiNe) The POSSibiliTieS

Have we forgotten who we are, or better yet, where we have come from? As we journey through life, we find ourselves struggling with the everyday events of our ego. What I mean is that society spells out for us at a very early age that we must be better than others and that we need to be number one so we can be a standout above all. So what have we had to surrender in our lives to believe that this is true? Could this be the very reason why so many of us struggle with our own identity and continue to search for who we are and what makes us happy through our

achievements, possessions and money rather than trusting what makes us feel worthy and good on the inside? It seems to me that the majority of people are in a continual search for more, believing it will separate them and signify a better or greater self. What if you could separate yourself from what you have vs. what makes you feel good inside? Remember as a child the excitement that you felt on your birthday or Christmas morning? Could you imagine having that feeling every single day when you wake up? What would your life be then? (Imagine) the possibilities What then could hold you back from living your dream (your true purpose)? There would be nothing that could stand in your way, for you would finally be living life the way it was meant to be lived without being afraid of being judged by others. This

is our right, and each and every one of us deserves it. When you surrender to this way of thinking, you open yourself up to a higher you, a more valued and giving you. It is a place inside each and every one of us where peace and prosperity are connected. This place is not measured in dollars or possessions, but a place far above. This is the place where gratitude comes from knowing you have helped or inspired someone through your actions, expecting nothing in return. When you can connect to this place inside of yourself and surrender to it, you will find yourself to be a truly blessed and extremely rich person. At that moment you will have unlocked the mystery of what is inside every single human being alive (why YOU are here) what your specific purpose is. Your search will finally be over and you will then be on your true journey, the one your source (God) intended for you. (Imagine) the possibilities Remember, you are always just one thought away from changing your life!

Stock your pantry with these healthy staples .......................................................................................................

hen hunger pangs arrive and you head to the kitchen to prepare a meal or a snack, it helps to have healthy foods on hand so that you can fill up without filling out your clothes. Sugary or fattening foods may be popular snacks, but consuming too many of these items can cause health implications, including weight gain, that could last for years. Although health experts tout certain super foods that are essential for the body, there are run-of-the-mill foods that are far less glamorous but pack their own healthy punch and are much more readily available. When making your next shopping list, be sure to add these items. riCe: Starchy rice is a versatile food that can accompany many meals. Whether served as a side dish or on its own or with some broth in a soup, rice can help satisfy hunger and keep the stomach feeling full. Brown rice is a healthier option than processed white rice. Rice is also gentle on the stomach for people who need to consume bland diets due to any gastrointestinal ailments. Another advantage to rice is that it stores well and will not go bad, so you can stock up. lOw-fAT yOGUrT: Yogurt can be enjoyed as a snack any time of the day. Rich in calcium and healthy probiotics, yogurt can even replace certain ingredients in recipes, including creams and sour cream. As a dessert, yogurt is a better option than more fattening puddings or ice cream. Thicker varieties of yogurt can help you feel fuller, longer. UNSAlTeD NUTS: An excellent protein-rich snack, nuts can be the go-to food when you need a nutritional

pick-me-up. Although they tend to be high in fat, much of the fat content is unsaturated fat that is rich in omega acids necessary for cardiovascular and neurological health. Nuts can be sprinkled on salads or served with cheeses to make meals more satisfying. CANNeD Or DrieD frUiTS: Fruits that are packed in natural fruit juices are just as healthy as fresh produce. However, they can be stored for longer periods of time without spoiling. Many people do not consume the recommended servings of fruit, and having canned or individually packaged fruit cups available makes it easy to include fruit in your diet. Fruits are full of required vitamins and are a natural fiber source to keep digestion in check. Dried fruits can be added to nuts to make a healthy trail mix. Raisins, for example, are a great source of iron, which helps the blood transport oxygen. beANS AND leGUMeS: These foods are high in protein as well as fiber, generally in a low-calorie package. Beans and legumes can replace meats as a protein source in many meals when the goal is to reduce caloric and fat intake. Beans can be used to thicken sauces or make foods more hearty, helping to stretch them further. veGeTAbleS: Whether fresh or frozen, vegetables are a must-have staple. Vegetables are ripe with vitamins and minerals, and pack a lot of punch with very low calories and fat. People need not worry about filling up on vegetables, and theyre one of the snacks that can be eaten in abundance

without worry of racking up a lot of calories. Aim to have half of your plate filled with vegetables at every meal, which will keep you full. leAN PrOTeiN SOUrCeS: Fish, poultry and lean cuts of meat are often the basis for meals. They can be kept and enjoyed in moderation. Rich cuts of pork and beef may be flavorful, but are high in saturated fats. leMONS Or leMON jUiCe: Rather than seasoning foods with salt and butter, lemon juice is a tasty flavoring that lends itself well to many types of foods. Lemons and limes contain limonene, furocoumarins and vitamin C, all of which help reduce your risk of cancer. CrANberry jUiCe: In addition to being an antioxidant, 100 percent cranberry juice helps fight bladder infections by preventing harmful bacteria from growing. The juice can be consumed on its own or diluted to add a splash of flavor to water. fiGS: Many people underestimate the nutritional value of figs. Figs can be eaten fresh off of the tree. Think about adding mashed figs to batters for healthier breads or even desserts. A good source of potassium and fiber, figs also contain vitamin B6, which produces moodboosting serotonin, lowering cholesterol and preventing water retention.

There are many healthy and versatile foods that can be stored in the pantry without spoiling. They make for quick snacks and help keep you feeling fuller, longer.

Take the next step to happier, healthier legs

Vena The Varicose Vein Institute ready to help you live without pain
By Jennifer Owen

ome varicose veins are unmistakable. enlarged, ropey and bulging, they rise above the surface of the skin, blue or purple in color, and are usually found on the back of the calf or the inside of the leg.

then there are the varicose veins that are not quite as visible, but are limiting nonetheless. symptoms can include pain, aching, fatigue, itching, burning, tingling, swelling, cramping, restlessness and throbbing. Varicose and spider veins get worse with time so the earlier they are treated, the better off youll be. a lot more people suffer from varicose vein disease than are diagnosed, says Bruce Cardone, m.d., the owner of Vena the Varicose Vein Institute in Waukesha. there are people who say to me, I was having a lot of pain in my legs, and I was having trouble going up and down stairs. those are the people who would benefit from an ultrasound. that is the only way to find out whats wrong and get the proper diagnosis. Because its not just a cosmetic problem its a medical problem. to give some perspective, varicose veins affect 50 percent of women ages 40 to 50 years old and 25 percent of men ages 30 to 40. they become more common with age, too. By age 70, 75 percent of women and 50 percent of men, show some sign of varicose vein disease. In addition to age, pregnancy can bring on varicose veins. Other risk factors include obesity, family history and standing or sitting for long periods of time.

You do not have to suffer from varicose vein disease. Advances in diagnosing the problem, as well as in the technology used to treat it, make treatment easier and more affordable than ever. You owe it to yourself and your legs to take the next step today.

Fortunately, today, there is hope for those who suffer from varicose vein disease. at Vena the Varicose Vein Institute, that includes several non-surgical, minimally invasive options. One is endovenous laser or radiofrequency ablation, which Cardone says is the treatment of choice for reflux of abnormal major superficial venous structures. Ultrasound is utilized to find the lower portion of the abnormal vein in the thigh or calf region. after the skin is anesthetized, again using ultrasound, a needle is inserted into the abnormal vein. a thin guide wire is passed up the vein into the higher part of the leg. at that point, a thin catheter for laser or radiofrequency device is guided using ultrasound into the upper portion of the leg and positioned at the origin of the vessel to be treated, he explains. tumescent fluid (anesthetic fluid) is infiltrated into the tissues around the length of the vessel that is to be treated. at that point, either laser or the radiofrequency device is activated. each of these devices, in a different way, generates heat around the tip of the device. the heat that is generated injures the wall of the vein. patients are awake during the treatment and afterwards wear medical-grade compression stockings for up to a week. normal activity can be resumed after that. depending on the severity of the problem, the number of endovenous treatments needed will vary. people with large bulging veins may need additional treatment, such as microphlebectomy. during this treatment, local anesthetic (lidocaine with and without tumescent solution) is utilized to infiltrate the tissues along the entire course of the bulging veins. small 1-2 mm puncture marks are made along the length of the bulging vein. a special hook-like instrument is then utilized to pull the bulging vein to the surface of the skin where it is then removed. the procedure is safe and generally causes minimal discomfort, Cardone says.

Finally, there is sclerotherapy. It is used for smaller veins (including spider veins) that are visible to the naked eye. the treatment usually takes about 30 minutes or less and consists of a series of small injections made directly into the vein. patients who visit Vena the Varicose Vein Institute will have a complete history taken along with an exam. proper diagnosis is critical, Cardone says, and thats where ultrasound comes in. Cardone is board certified in diagnostic radiology and is a diplomate of the american Board of phlebology. He is fellowship trained in diagnostic ultrasound and holds special credentials from the american registry for diagnostic medical sonography as a registered vascular technologist (rVt). If you have an ultrasound at our clinic, its going to be done properly, he says. many people wonder if their insurance will cover the cost of the treatments. If we find that you do have varicose vein disease/reflux that we can confirm by ultrasound examination, it will most often be covered by your insurance, Cardone says. patients are responsible for deductibles and/or copays. In most cases, the ultrasound is covered by insurance because it is a diagnostic test. regardless of which procedure you may end up receiving, the first step is making the call, Cardone advises. You do not have to suffer from varicose vein disease, he says. advances in diagnosing the problem, as well as in the technology used to treat it, make treatment easier and more affordable than ever. You owe it to yourself and your legs to take the next step today.

Protection techniques for the sensitive .............................................

by master Jesse
ou can never pop enough pills or drink it away. Maybe you will not feel your brothers or sisters as you tend to your hangover, but your hangover will fade, and as the fog lifts you will still feel the insecurities of your brothers and sisters. But to you it feels the way most days do; you feel somewhat unsure of yourself. Sometimes you feel a bit afraid or a lot afraid; later a little lucky, but too nervous to decide what to do about it. The next day you feel super crabby and by night happy, sharing, optimistic and a life-planner. Heck, who wouldnt want to run for a beer or grab a big chunk of chocolate. Its hard for the sensitive that grows up not understanding why they feel the things they feel. First you must accept that you will always see or feel more than others. Start paying attention. Stop trying to block what you feel. Feel as much as you can. If you practice feeling yourself in meditation, one can learn to feel ones self clearly enough to start feeling more of yourself and less of the others. As one feels less of the others, its amazing as you learn to feel more of yourself. You start learning how to focus the others out by feeling ones self. Its ok. You have the right to have time out. Its not as easy as I make it sound. You will need a time-out from the others and from the disciplines. Too much time away from meditation, and the fog of the others

will return, so you will find meditation to be the best tool you can access. Its free and no hangover. One thing that everyone can do to reduce the foreign feelings is to stop letting people get in your personal space. If you are in the habit of standing in the space of another, stop. One does not have to be psychic to feel someone standing in their space. If you are psychic and you allow unwelcome people in your space, you will download their stuff. A good way to minimize the contamination is not to permit someone to stand directly in front of you. When they do so they align their chakras with your chakras and the contamination begins. All you have to do is shift your body to a 45 degree angle so as not to connect your chakras with theirs. If they shift to get back in your space, shift your body 45 degrees from theirs, but keep your head looking straight at them. If they shift to realign themselves be frank and ask them not to stand in your space. This technique is something we can all do starting today, and you will feel the effects of it the first day. These two techniques are the fundamentals of personal stability. With dedication, faith, work and time, one may learn to navigate the senses and be at peace with ones self and others.

f you suffer from anxiety, stress, back pain, headaches or poor circulation, hot stone massage could be the treatment for you. Hot stones were used as healing therapy for thousands of years. In 1993, the technique was formally introduced as LaStone therapy by Mary Nelson, a massage therapist from Tucson, Arizona. The concept of using hot stones was to bring the body to a deep relaxed state, therefore allowing the body to self-heal. When the treatment is applied in the most effective way, this style of massage can be both relaxing and therapeutic at the same time. The stones are smooth black basalt, which retain heat very well. They are placed in water and heated to approximately 120 to 130 degrees. The therapist can adjust the temperature of the stones to meet the needs of each client to assure they are comfortable. A sheet or towel is placed between the stones lying directly on the client as a protective cover. The direct heat penetrates into the muscle tissue causing it to soften and relax to a lengthened state, while bringing oxygen and blood to the area. As a result, the pain starts to decrease. The therapist can apply deeper pressure if necessary to easily melt away the knots with minimum discomfort to the client. The therapist will also be massaging with the stones using Swedish techniques to introduce the heat to the body. This increases blood and lymph flow, which promotes the detoxification process. A typical hot stone massage will last for

90 minutes, giving the therapist enough time to do a full-body treatment. A wide range of stone sizes are used depending on the area of the body being worked on. The client will be lying on their back to start, with larger stones placed on the abdominal area. This is helpful to relieve any digestive discomfort or menstrual pain for women. Stones are also placed between the toes and under the palms of the hands. Both of these areas have reflex points that affect the entire body, and when exposed to heat, the body begins relax. A large oval stone that contours to the curve of the neck is placed

under the head for the client to rest on. This will help to alleviate any tension caused from headaches and stiff neck muscles. Once the stationary stones are in place, the massage begins with warm stones applied to the face to loosen the jaw, temples and forehead. Cold marble stones are then placed above the brow to relieve sinus pressure and below the eyes to reduce puffiness. The stones on the face and under the head are removed after a few minutes. The therapist begins massaging with the stones, using a series of applications to

10 things yoga is not ......................................................

by hope Zvara

1. yOGA iS NOT A fAShiON ShOw. It can sometimes appear

that yoga is in fact a fashion runway where people are able to show off the latest trends and styles via their yoga mat. The only problem is when someone cant afford those expensive duds (as most yoga clothes are) they can feel less than perfect. A few years back, I remember hearing about a yoga fashion show happening, and I had to step back for a moment and ask myself, Is this even yoga anymore? 2. yOGA iS NOT A wOrkOUT. Now I bet you are thinking, What the heck is she talking about? But hear me out. Yoga in the West is mainly physical, and that being said, many treat it like an exercise routine; something they use to cross train with, and that is great and wonderful. However, asana is only one of the eight limbs of yoga, so really, when yoga is a work out, then you are simply asana-ing. 3. yOGA iS NOT A fAD. Now, many use yoga coupled with other practices to make it sound trendier, more hip, and what they end up doing is taking the yoga out of yoga. I giggle at the phone calls I get from time to time from prospective students, very explicit about the kind of yoga they are looking for; they dont really know anything about yoga itself, just that the kind they are looking for includes a buzz word and sounds very difficult. 4. yOGA iS NOT bOOT CAMP. It seems a little oxymoron to me to put boot camp and yoga together; you might as well call it military yoga. What I hope people are realizing is they are buying into buzz words, or spiking terms, that promise to give them results fast, and a boot camp has that appeal. If you want yoga to kick your butt, then find a teacher who is capable of truly teaching you what you are doing and what it means to practice yoga. 5. yOGA iS NOT A reliGiON. Contrary to what some may still think, yoga is not a religion. It is something to help enhance
26

your belief system and spirituality, but not a practice that deems a particular faith. Yoga is without a doubt a science of consciousness. Some say religion creates walls, well then yoga cultivates a communion of consciousness together as One. 6. yOGA iS NOT COMPeTiTiON. I heard this past year that the Olympic committee was considering putting yoga in the mix of other sports for the Olympic Games. What?! Yoga as a competition totally defeats the entire purpose of a yoga practice in the first place. Focusing on the physical only, and then worrying about beating someone else and being judged on your form, posture and approach; someone might as well follow you around all day and flip up score cards as to how they think you are living your life. 7. yOGA iS NOT AbOUT yOUr TeACher. I heard the term yoga celebrity a few years ago and I was saddened to hear such a term. Can you really be a celebrity of yoga? Apparently so, and yes, a good teacher is hard to find, but what makes a good teacher is not fame and living on the Cali coast. As your teacher, I would want nothing more than to truly help you understand what living a yogic lifestyle means, not just to teach you asana. And in those teachings, a yoga teachers aim should be, to in the end, have a student that is ten times better than she (or he) would ever be. 8. yOGA iS NOT A DeSTiNATiON. Yoga is quite simply a journey. A journey that can lead to an endless array of possibilities. We often get fixed on mastering a pose, and then once we have mastered that pose, we realize that it wasnt the pose at all, but the journey to the pose that gave us such joy and accomplishment. 9. yOGA iS NOT A qUiCk fix. I hear it all the time from students, What can I do for this issue? And to be quite honest,
www.naturespathways.com

yoga is a lifelong practice, one thing leading into the next, much like a dance.
even on a physical level, it is not that simple. Our bodies took years to get to where we are, and to be able to un-do something in two simple moves is ridiculous and simply not possible. It takes time to truly understand the body, why we are the way we are and, most importantly, to heal. Yoga is a lifelong practice, one thing leading into the next, much like a dance. Think of all the old-time dances; they took time, there was precision, purpose and mindfulness involved. Sounds like yoga to me! 10. yOGA iS NOT SOMeThiNG we DO. Yoga isnt something you do, it is a state of being. Yoga is what some call a complete union of all things consciousness, but more importantly, yoga is you, me, the trees, air, your breath, a smile, a pose, the sound Om. Yoga is the beginning and end of everything, yoga is all that is in existence. You can never really ever do yoga; you can only practice yoga. Much like you can never really do life; you can only live life. Yoga is the action of life.

loosen and soothe the muscles of the neck, upper shoulders, chest, arms, hands, legs and feet. Trigger point stones are longer, shaped more like a thumb and are designed to treat common problem areas, such as the neck, upper shoulders, along the spine and the arch of the foot. Stones starting to cool are always replaced with hot ones to ensure a constant flow of heat throughout the treatment. The client will now turn over, lying face down as the therapist places stationary stones along the spine and a large stone over the sacrum or tailbone. The backs of the legs and arms are massaged while heat penetrates the back. Finally, the back is thoroughly worked using Swedish and deep tissues techniques with a constant flow of heat to finish the massage. The client is encouraged to rest for a few minutes and take their time getting off the table so the body can adjust to all the changes that just occurred. Its strongly recommended to drink plenty of water to rehydrate and flush the body of toxins. The benefits clients have experienced immediately after include feeling very relaxed and calm, relief from pain, increased flexibility, being more balanced and an overall sense of well-being.

encourage children to floss ....................................................

earning to brush their own teeth is a lesson all children must master. Although parents ultimately may have children who become proficient at brushing their own teeth, getting them to floss is generally more difficult. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 41 percent of children aged 2 to 11 had tooth decay in their first teeth. Dental caries are common among children, likely because they have not become proficient at taking care of their teeth. Soft, sticky foods are commonplace in young kids diets, and these can promote decay. Even well-intentioned gummy vitamins can be sources of dental decay. Oftentimes, these foods become lodged between the teeth or on the surface of molars. If left in contact with the teeth for too long, food particles become a source of carbohydrates for oral bacteria, and cavities may appear as a result. To remove food particles from between the teeth, children must floss, advises the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists. It is recommended that parents help their children to floss as soon as two teeth are touching and continue to do so until the child is around the age of eight, when a child should have enough dexterity to do it on his or her own. Flossing is essential to making sure children do not experience cavities at an early age, and it can establish practices that promote

oral health throughout life. Despite being so important, many parents fail to encourage flossing or are at a loss as to how to make it enjoyable and effective. Although regular dental floss is one of the first tools for flossing, the dexterity required to wind the floss around little fingers, and then thoroughly clean the teeth, may discourage children. Parents can look into the wide array of flossing helpers available at the store. In fact, many age-appropriate flossers are now available that feature fun designs and smaller profiles to fit into kids mouths more easily. Flossers may be attached to a handle to make back teeth more accessible and promote more effective flossing. Manufacturers such as DenTek, Butler GUM, Plackers Kids, Dr. Fresh, Oral-B and Brush Buddies offer childrens flossers. Kids who shy away from flossing may be more likely to use a childrens water flosser. In lieu of string floss, a water flosser uses a pressurized stream of water to dislodge food from between teeth. Although a water flosser may be more messy, children may enjoy the opportunity to play with water and the cleaning sensation provided. To prevent the buildup of plaque and the development of dental caries, parents should educate children about proper flossing techniques.

how high frequency hearing loss affects your life ....................................................................................................

by Dr. Douglas kloss
why DO i heAr PeOPle, bUT NOT UNDerSTAND TheM?

This is one of the most common questions hearing-impaired individuals have. The answer: high frequency sensorineural hearing loss. In the English language, vowels are low frequency sounds that bring power to our speech, but contribute less to understanding. Consonants are more mid and high frequency sounds that bring understanding to our language. It is very common to lose high frequency hearing sensitivity at a greater amount than we lose our low frequency hearing sensitivity. When someone has a high frequency hearing loss, they can hear low frequency sounds (vowels) louder than other sounds. This allows them to be alerted that someone is speaking to them, but since the high frequency sounds are missing or present at significantly lower levels, they cannot understand what is being said. An excellent example of this situation is the TV game show Wheel of Fortune. When all those blank spaces for letters appear on the screen, why do you think the vowels are so cheap? The vowels are cheap because they convey little meaning to the word. Its only after you start placing some consonants into the spaces that you can figure out what the word is. People with untreated high frequency hearing loss are literally playing Wheel of Fortune all day long. The most effective treatment is hearing aid amplification

that is used consistently. The human brain is very powerful, but is limited by the sounds that the ears let in. If you have a high frequency hearing loss, your brain is not getting that information and cannot make use of it to understand speech. Hearing aids can bring back those high frequency sounds, and our brain will actually re-wire itself to begin using the high frequency sounds again. This re-wiring process can take several months to complete. The result is better speech understanding. If you find yourself asking others for repetition often or you are turning up the TV/radio louder and louder, it is time for an audiological evaluation. If you or someone else you know is avoiding social situations because of poor hearing, please have them be evaluated by an audiologist. Hearing aids have come a long way over the years and most are now extremely sophisticated digital devices that perform quite well. Hearing aids make split-second decisions on sound processing to deliver the speech signal the most appropriate way to the user. Every hearing loss is different, and the hearing aids need to be programmed by a competent professional. It is strongly suggested that you see an audiologist when purchasing hearing aids.

Noni
(Morinda citrifolia) ............................................

oni is an evergreen shrub or small tree that grows throughout the tropical regions of the Pacific Ocean, from Southeast Asia to Australia. Noni has a history of use as a topical preparation for joint pain and skin conditions. Today, noni fruit juice has folk uses as a general health tonic and for cancer and chronic conditions such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The noni fruit is most commonly combined with other fruits (such as grape) to make juice. Preparations of the fruit and leaves are also available in capsules, tablets and teas.

what the science says

In laboratory research, noni has shown antioxidant, immunestimulating and tumor-fighting properties. These results suggest that noni may warrant further study for conditions such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. However, noni has not been well studied in people for any health condition. NCCAM-funded research includes a study on noni for cancer to determine its safety and potential effects on tumors and symptoms, as well as a laboratory study of nonis effects on prostate cancer cells. The National Cancer Institute is funding preliminary research on noni for breast cancer prevention and treatment.

Noni is high in potassium. People who are on potassium-restricted diets because of kidney problems should avoid using noni. Several noni juice manufacturers have received warnings from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration about making unsupported health claims. Few side effects from noni have been reported, but its safety has not been adequately studied. There have been reports of liver damage from using noni. It should be avoided if you have liver disease because it contains compounds that may make your disease worse. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health practices you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Air pollution can be indoors, too ......................................................................

ir pollution is often associated with heavily trafficked highways or industrial areas home to manufacturing plants. But air pollution can occur anywhere, including inside your home. Though it can be easy to recognize outdoor air pollution, indoor air pollution is not always so easily identifiable. But understanding indoor air pollution can help men and women, whether they live in a private home or an apartment, improve the air quality in their homes.

what causes indoor air pollution?

Indoor air pollution can be the result of many things, including biological contaminants (mold and mildew), tobacco smoke, radon and household chemicals. The concentration of some pollutants can increase when the temperature indoors is high or if humidity levels indoors are high. Poor ventilation may also contribute to poor indoor air quality. Without adequate ventilation, a home may not get enough outdoor air to dilute emissions from indoor sources. As a result, pollutants can accumulate inside a home, making the home uncomfortable and possibly putting its inhabitants health at risk. In addition, insufficient ventilation makes it harder for indoor pollutants to escape the home, forcing them to linger inside and negatively affect air quality. This is common during colder months when windows and doors are not open as often and fresh air from outside is not entering the home.

exposure or not appear until years after initial exposure. The Environmental Protection Agency notes that there remains uncertainty about the concentrations or length of exposure necessary to produce specific health problems. Such uncertainty could be a result of different people reacting differently when exposed to indoor air pollutants. But while that uncertainty means theres no guarantee exposure, be it brief or prolonged, will ultimately lead to disease, theres also no guarantee that even minimal exposure will prevent the development of disease down the road.

Can indoor air quality be improved?

what are the negative health effects of indoor air pollution?

Indoor air pollutants can cause immediate problems or problems down the road. The immediate effects, which can include irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, as well has headaches, dizziness and fatigue, are typically short-term and can be treated, oftentimes by removing the persons exposure to the source of the pollution. Symptoms of some diseases, including asthma, may also appear shortly after exposure. Long-term effects of indoor air pollution may show up years after initial exposure or after prolonged exposure. Respiratory disease, cancer and even heart disease may result from prolonged
www.naturespathways.com

Homeowners and apartment dwellers can take steps to improve the quality of the air inside their homes. Eliminating the sources of the pollution or reducing its emissions is a great place to start. Those with a gas stove can adjust their stove to reduce its emissions, which can save money while improving air quality. Another way to improve indoor air quality is to take steps to get more outdoor air into the home. This can be as simple as opening windows and doors and operating window or attic fans when the weather permits. In the kitchen, install fans that exhaust outdoors, which will immediately remove contaminants from the room. Each of these steps is meant to ventilate the home, and such ventilation should be emphasized when tackling home improvement projects that increase the amount of pollutants in the home. Such projects include painting, paint stripping or sanding. Air cleaners can also be effective at improving indoor air quality, especially those cleaners that can remove particles from the air inside the home. Gaseous pollutants may not be removed by air cleaners, so if such pollutants are a problem then an air cleaner may not be the solution. Indoor air pollution can make a home uncomfortable and unhealthy. More information about improving air quality in a home is available at www.epa.gov.

love your heart .................................................

by kyle smith, Dipl om
s it a purely romantic notion to think about a broken heart? Not at all. Sadly, the statistics related to heart disease tell a dire tale about just how many hearts are truly broken in this country each year: Hypertension (excessive high blood pressure) affects nearly 1 billion people. 600,000 people die annually of heart disease. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. About 935,000 individuals suffer heart attacks each year. Thats the bad news. The good news is that there are plenty of things you can do to keep your heart healthy: Eat a smart diet low in salt, saturated fat and cholesterol, but high in whole foods, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Exercise daily. Do not smoke. Know the warning signs of heart disease and/or a heart attack. Include acupuncture into your wellness plan. Thats right acupuncture! Recently, studies have confirmed what Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners have known for generations that acupuncture improves cardiovascular function. Researchers in China worked with 70 patients and their results showed significant, immediate reduction in blood pressure following an acupuncture treatment. The individuals were treated five times a week for three months; not only did they experience direct results, but also, more importantly, their overall blood pressure readings decreased over time.1 Other findings have demonstrated improvement in heart rate variability (HRV), or the time between heart beats, when acupuncture is used. Treatments at precise points work to synchronize the two branches of the autonomic nervous system and allow the heart to relax during stressful situations. One branch, the parasympathetic, maintains the body at rest; the other, known as the sympathetic branch, acts as a counterbalance to the parasympathetic and is typically associated with the fight or flight response. Acupuncture targets this branch, seeking to calm the brain so it doesnt respond as intensely to external stimuli. In both Western and Eastern medicine, the heart governs the blood and blood vessels within the body, and thus oversees all

other internal organs. Traditional Chinese Medicine, however, regards the heart as the emperor, and beyond nourishing all organ systems it also houses the mind, or spirit, of the individual. Key acupuncture points target both the heart and the mind simultaneously because, from a Chinese perspective, they are wholly united and inseparable. The mind encompasses the full range of human consciousness, including emotional health, mental function and memory. When the mind is stressed, symptoms can manifest as palpitations, insomnia and shortness of breath all indications of heart deficiencies. Conversely, when the heart is strong and healthy, individuals enjoy strong wisdom, contentment and emotional well-being. A knowledgeable practitioner will always work with patients to nourish and balance these two vital functions, resulting in a singularly healthy and happy person.

health and wellness q&A ...................................................................

by karmen nenahlo

Question: Whats best for vegetables fresh or frozen? Answer: Vegetables are vegetables. The key here is that youre eating them be it fresh or frozen. When eating fresh vegetables, choose ones that are in season for enhanced flavor. If choosing to cook your vegetables, remember that the vitamin and mineral content of produce is greatly influenced by high temperatures, exposure to light and acidity. To maximize the nutritional value of cooked vegetables, here are a couple key recommendations: Cook your vegetables for as short an amount of time as possible. Hallelujah for the microwave! Minimize the amount of water used to cook vegetables to prevent leaching of nutrients into cooking water. As winter approaches and farmers markets become a fleeting memory, so does access to fresh produce. Turning to frozen vegetables is a viable replacement during those cold winter months, as vegetables are flash frozen at their nutrient rich peak. Maximum nutritional value and a lower price (generally) you cant beat that!

Question: How do you replace white flour with whole-wheat flour in baking? Answer: The major motivator for replacing white flour with whole-wheat flour is the obvious nutritional advantage. Whole grains can help lower blood pressure, reduce risk of chronic disease, aid in weight maintenance and provide additional fiber. So why not bake a little extra healthiness into your favorite foods? Sounds easy, right? Not exactly. Whole-wheat flour behaves very differently in a recipe than white flour. Therefore, certain adjustments must be made when substituting whole wheat for white. First off, substituting whole-wheat flour for white flour one-to-one is a no go. Whole-wheat flour absorbs much more liquid, so it may be necessary to add more liquid or decrease whole-wheat flour by cup. Now I must provide this disclaimer: the texture of baked products is altered when whole-wheat flour is used in place of white. When using whole-wheat flour, the product becomes denser. This is because the germ, a component of the wheat that is removed from white flour during milling, inhibits gluten formation. Gluten is a protein that makes extensive networks, assisting baked products in rising. Less gluten = less rise and therefore a less fluffy
www.naturespathways.com

34

product. The food industry and sensory scientists have been working for years to successfully create a whole-wheat product with the same texture as white flour. Were still waiting! In the meantime, a good way to combat this texture issue is to compromise use half white flour and half whole-wheat flour. You get the added nutritional benefit, and the product remains edible. You can also try adding a tad bit more baking powder or baking soda (other key players in leavening that baked good).

Question: Short of taking pills, powders and potions, what else can I do to detox my digestive tract? Answer: Were coming up on that time of year when want to have a rocking bod, but everything is working against us Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. What do all these things have in common? They all focus on food (and most times, too much food). Luckily there are a handful of yoga postures that can health-ify your gut in no time without the hunger pangs of a juice cleanse. These poses include:

PASChiMOTTANASANA (SeATeD fOrwArD fOlD):

In a seated position with legs long, gently extend arms overhead and reach for toes. Focus on lengthening the chest on inhales and pulling the chest towards thighs on exhales. UShTrASANA (CAMel POSe): Come to your knees with your feet hips-width distance apart. Place hands on lower back as if placing into back pockets. Extend gaze towards the ceiling while gently beginning to lean back.
ArDhA MATSyeNDrASANA (SeATeD SPiNAl TwiST): Come to a seated posi-

tion with your left leg extended long and right knee bent over left. Gently twist to the left, placing the left arm at the base of the spine and your right arm on the right knee. Repeat on other side. SUPiNe SPiNAl TwiST: In a supine position, hug your right knee into your chest. Gently pull the right knee over the extended left leg, reaching the right arm out to form a T and gazing right. Repeat on other side.

Most of the postures focus on one of two movements to the stomach and small intestine: twisting/rinsing or stretching/ lengthening. When performed together, these movements encourage the body to eliminate toxins. Our digestive tracts go through a lot thats why its important to take a second and show our bodies some love. Incorporating some of these yoga poses into your daily routine may aid in digestion, improve acid reflux, relieve pain and combat gastrointestinal disturbances.

jane tries scientific hand analysis to clarify her purpose ......................................................................

friend told me that she had been doing some soul searching about her career and what direction she wanted to take. While she felt she was going in the right direction, she wanted some reassurance. Mary met with Kathy Clegg, a life coach who does scientific hand analysis. My friend told me that Kathy helped her find the courage to take the leap. By palm reading, I thought? Sounded a bit out there to me, but I decided to give it a try. Sounds fun! I met with Kathy of MP Possibilities at her office. I just wanted to know my purpose, and like my friend, I needed a little reassurance. Kathy has her masters degree in counseling and over 25 years of experience. She uses scientific hand analysis to help discover what path to take with those she is counseling and coaching. She has found that it can save two to three months of counseling or coaching! As Kathy says, The hands dont lie. Kathy started by taking a print of both of my hands, similar to being fingerprinted. This allows her to see all of the lines of my hands in detail and gives her something to study after I leave. What is unique about scientific hand analysis (as compared to palm readings) is that not only are the palms studied, but also the fingertips. After this first appointment (which included the first level of analysis), Kathy said she would spend four to five hours analyzing my hand prints and that we would get together in a week for an in-depth session. I hadnt yet shared any pertinent information with Kathy; I wanted to see if there was something to this. We met one week later in a private room at a local library. Kathy explained that it needs to be quiet so she can record the session; this way, I would have the information I needed for reference. Kathy pulled out my prints, on which she had hundreds of notes written. She first explained to me that there are four soul schools that we fit into: service, love, wisdom and peace. Kathy determined that mine were service and wisdom. We spent 45 minutes talking about the meaning of this and how I could apply it to find my purpose. It was spooky. She was spot on. And there was my reassurance! As Kathy says, The hands dont lie.

why does kathy use scientific hand analysis in her counseling and coaching practice?
To help others find their purpose. To inspire and reassure others to take action on their dreams. To help determine the obstacles and overcome the stumbling To cut to the chase.

blocks people face.

My reading was not only informative but also fun! I tried to explain it to my friends and family without much success. Since I think they need to experience it firsthand, I invited Kathy to come to my home for a hand analysis party. Eight to ten of my closest friends will be there to experience what I did. I cant wait to share this with them! Thank you, Kathy, for helping me learn my lifes purpose. By using my creativity and leadership skills, I am an influential woman and courageous problem solver! I encourage you to learn your lifes purpose and be coached to step into it.

The pain cycle ..................................................

by Dr. Julie e. Vance

like to talk to my patients about something called the pain cycle. The pain cycle goes like this: You injure something and that causes pain. The pain youre feeling causes your body to compensate somehow. That compensation causes your body to move in an unbalanced way, which sets the stage for your injury and your posture to get worse. Pain cycles begin with an injury. The injury you sustain can either be from something big called a macro-trauma, like that which happens from a fall or car accident or it can be the accumulation of little things over a long period of time, called micro-traumas. Its easy to understand macro-traumas. You sprain an ankle while going for that big play in sand volleyball, you get into a car accident and ache all over for several days. Some part of your body has been strained past its capacity to stretch and now youre injured. On the other hand, a micro-trauma is a much subtler, but just as real injury that occurs when part of the body experiences more stress over time than it can handle. Any mechanical system, whether its a bridge or a body part, will fail from too much stress placed on it all at once (macro-trauma) or from much less stress over a long period of time (micro-trauma). The unfortunate result of either type of trauma is pain. No one likes pain; however, many people have taught themselves to live with pain, and many consider it a badge of honor to be able to keep on going despite being in pain. In fact, living in pain can actually train the body to simply hurt more. In reality, the more you hurt, the more youre training your body to hurt, and the more you get into a revolving-door cycle of pain-compensation-more pain. There is one universal truth about our bodies. In the absence of illness, pain is NOT normal. However, every single day, people wake up in pain, go to work in pain, come home in pain, live their lives in pain. Chronic pain and poor posture are the accumulation of old injuries as our bodies adapt to pain. We are not talking about adapting to that grimacing pain that follows the type of pain
www.naturespathways.com

that causes you to cry out, but the low-grade, constant, you-cantget-away-from-it pain. The kind of pain that makes you stop doing those things in your life that you used to or still want to enjoy. Many people actually start to think of this sort of pain as simply a normal part of their day. The most effective way to break the pain cycle is to interrupt it somewhere along its path. As a Doctor of Chiropractic, I look for the areas where a persons body has compensated and work to correct those areas. Correcting and releasing the areas of poor posture and compensation for an injury involves healing both the joints and the soft tissue structures causing the pain. Often strengthening exercises to restore proper motion are helpful as well as important in restoring proper alignment. The last 25 years of helping patients realign their bodies and correcting weaknesses has taught me that much of the chronic pain from past injuries that we live with is not an inevitable part of the aging process.

hormone use in organic meat and poultry, and require 100% organic feed for organic livestock. The beef cattle are 100% grass fed on mineral-rich pastures, from local farms located in the Midwest. That thing called love! .....................................................

alexandria s. binkowski, mh, nD, ms

s a psychotherapist, I am fascinated by emotions, but none more than love. According to the English definition, Love is an emotion of a strong affection and personal attachment. It is also said to be a virtue representing all of human kindness and compassion. Is love really that simple? There are impersonal, interpersonal, biological, psychological, spiritual, political, cultural and philosophical views of love. Due to the many uses and meanings, combined with the complexity of the feelings involved, love is unusually difficult to consistently define. Impersonal love is that for an object, country, animal, goal, principle or activity by deeply valuing it, being committed to it, or by identifying or bonding with it. Volunteers have impersonal love for their cause. Interpersonal love is what most people call love. It is romantic love that makes our eyes twinkle and hearts skip a beat, puts a skip in our step, causes sleep loss, produces excited feelings and just makes the world look more beautiful. This type of love is part of the survival instinct. It connects us as humans and keeps the species going. Interpersonal love involves non-romantic relationships such as with a friend, family member, coworker, client, someone in a chat room or even a stranger. To have this type of love be considered interpersonal, there must be a fulfillment of each others explicit or implicit physical or emotional needs in some way. The biological view of love is that it is a human drive. It starts with passion or lust, the physical need to mate, releasing chemicals and hormones. It involves attraction for the choosing and pursuit of a mate. Attraction is romantic love. It releases chemicals in the brain causing the symptoms mentioned in the paragraph above. The last phase of biological love needed to help relationships last for long periods of time is attachment. This involves the need to receive care, approval, safe and secure feelings, protection and commitment, as well as become parents. Psychology depicts love as a cognitive and social phenomenon. There are three components: intimacy, commitment and passion. Intimacy is sharing confidences, desires and feelings. Commitment is the expectation of a permanent relationship. Passion is infatuation and romantic love. Psychological theories also state that love is a conscious choice, not just a feeling but actions as

well. Compassionate love involves caring, which is the valuing of others needs and happiness. Cultural diversity surrounding love is vast. Greek love ranges from pure ideal love, soul love, physical love, appreciation of beauty, loyalty, hospitality, to love of the mind. Italian love ranges from romantic, affectionate, sexual, to friendship. Oriental cultural love ranges from acts of kindness and loyalty, selflessness, duty, attitude, to universal love. Spiritual diversity is also vast. Christian love comes from God and ranges from being charitable, unselfish, unconditional, to brotherly love. Judaism promotes loving kindness, loving your neighbor as yourself, and loving God with all your heart, soul and might. Love is also good deeds and being grateful. The Islamic view is of brotherhood, deep kindness and divine love. Eastern beliefs range from attaining enlightenment, wisdom, self-acceptance, nonattachment, to altruistic love. The most known political view of love is the free love movement that started in the 1960s. This social movement rejects marriage, which is seen as a form of social bondage. The free love movements initial goal was to separate the state from sexual matters, such as marriage, birth control and adultery. It argued that love relations that are freely entered into should not be regulated by law. Laws of particular concern to free love movements have included those that prevent an unmarried couple from living together, and those that regulate adultery and divorce, as well as age of consent, birth control, homosexuality and abortion. Social philosophy and ethics focus on what love is and what purpose it serves. Theories range from love being a healthy behavior, love being a part of the process of natural selection of evolution, to love being an unexplained mystery. Always remember: Love is what we were born with. It is the essential existential fact. Love is the intuitive knowledge of our hearts. It is the ultimate reality and purpose of why we are on Earth. Live each moment of your life as if it were the last, for this is not a dress rehearsal. Live it in and out of LOVE!
