Welcome to the Winter 2012 /2013 Newsletter from Headway Dorset!

Welcome to the Winter 2012/2013 newsletter and all of us here at Headway Dorset hope you had a brilliant Christmas! We are busy as ever, with new groups being planned, upcoming events and our social enterprise Headway Care. If you havent had a chance, please check out our Facebook and Twitter pages, have a look at our website and subscribe to our mailing list, we want to make sure that we make sure everyone hears about what we have got going on and gives us feedback on how we are doing!

Winter Events at Headway Dorset


Our BOLLYWOOD NIGHT on 17th November was a great success, everybody enjoyed themselves and we raised just under 1300!! A huge thank you to our band The Volatile Agents who were thoroughly entertaining and had the dance floor heaving all night, Kayak our dancers who put on a brilliant display, Usha who did some fantastic henna tattoos Group and to volunteers Sue Stanford, Kirsty Stanford, Jaine Logan and Kim Simmons who As the summer seems to be (finally) arriving, we are hoping to have a drop in day as soon as possible for Headway gave up a lot of their free time to help with Dorset service users to have a go at the planning and organisation to make the kayaking. We have two great coaches, night such a success! one of whom is also a physio so its an excellent opportunity for you to try it More pictures of the evening can be seen out and find out what the rehabilitative on our Facebook page!! benefits could be for you whilst also having some fun on the water! If there is enough interest we can then set up a weekly session. We raised over 300 with our Christmas raffle, watch this space as we will be back in store at Easter!! Bournemouth and Poole College presents Headway Dorset Charity Gig!!
Annas daughter Bea is holding a fundraising gig with her band and other bands from Bournemouth and Poole College on Wednesday 13th February. The gig will be held at the Winchester Pub, 39 Poole Hill, Bournemouth BH2 5PW from 6.30pm 9.30pm and tickets are a bargain at 2 each in advance or 3 on the door. The gig will be part of her coursework at college, and all proceeds will go to Headway Dorset. To get tickets, see Anna or Kerry 01202 606560 or fundraiser@headwaydorset.org.uk

NEW GROUPS FOR 2013 AT HEADWAY DORSET!

Mirror Image Womens Group Following a successful first year, we are pleased to be awarded funding for a further 18 months from Lloyds TSB. Headway users from all over Dorset have had fun taking part in sessions to improve their self esteem, confidence and body image and we are looking forward to bringing the project to other service users this year! If you want more information or to put yourself down to be involved, contact Maria or Kerry at Headway on 01202 606560.

Musical Therapy Group We are very excited to have also received funding for a Musical Therapy Group this year. The Radcliffe Trust has approved us funding for the group, which will be overseen by our Occupational Therapist Claire. The group hopes to help people with enhancing memory capabilities, alleviating depression and frustration, self expression, communication skills and self esteem to name a few! Headway Dorset Mens Group


We are pleased to announce that we have been granted funding from Awards for All to run the eagerly anticipated mens group for a year. After the success of our ladies group, we didnt want our men to feel left out, so planning is underway to get a similar group off the ground in the near future. If you would like to hear more about what we have planned or to put your name down to be involved with the new group, please contact us at Headway Dorset!! The ladies from our Weymouth Mirror Image Group take on the climbing walls at Weymouth Outdoor Centre!

Carers Corner!
Free Training Course offer to all Carers.
St Johns Ambulance Carers Support Programme will teach first aid techniques to adults who look after friends, relatives and neighbours. You can learn how to deal with bleeding, burns, choking, fractures, hypothermia and how to put an unconscious person in the recovery position. The course is weekly over four 3 hour sessions, running in Sturminster Newton, Ferndown, Purbeck and Christchurch, email kerry.course@sja.org.uk or ring 01305 751160 for more information or to book a place.

Web forum to hear the views of Carers.


An opportunity for Carers to give their views and experience to a Parliamentary Committee. The Joint Committee on the draft Care and Support Bill has set up a web forum that gives Carers a chance to be heard. You can comment on your experiences as a Carer and what impact you think the Governments proposed legislation might have on your own situation. Your comments will help inform recommendations made to the Government in the Committees report. To take part, please follow this link

Headway Dorset Easter Quiz!!


The Befriending Scheme would like to invite you to take part in our Easter Quiz. Its been a while since we had a quiz night, so we are all looking forwards to getting our thinking caps on!! The Quiz will be held at St Nicolas Church, Wareham Road, Corfe Mullen BH21 3LE on Saturday 9th March from 7.30pm 9.30 pm. We are looking for teams of up to 6 participants who may enter at 3 per person. If you dont have a team, dont worry, we will find you one! Contact Lynn or Kerry on 01202 606560 or fundraiser@headwaydorset.org.uk for an entry form or just turn up on the night! There will be refreshments and a raffle on the night and of course Lynns famous Easter Chicks will be available!!

Bournemouth Marathon Festival 2013


We were excited to hear that Bournemouth will be holding its first Marathon Festival in October 2013, comprising of a weekend of events including Bournemouth Marathon Half Marathon Supersonic 10k Speed of Light 3k Junior Race 1.5k Junior Race 1.5k Wheelchair Race 1.5k Handbike Race

Befriending Scheme
We would like to thank wholeheartedly all of our volunteers who help with the Befriending Scheme. They really do a brilliant job and we couldnt do it without them! Here are a few pictures of some of their antics!

Volunteers needed
We currently have plenty of opportunities for anyone who wants to volunteer some of their spare time. Volunteering can be a rewarding experience, a useful addition to your CV and helps Headway Dorset to keep running the high level of services that our service users deserve.
