NUTRITIONAL HEALING 101 SECTION 3 THE FOUR HUMORS & NUTRITION Submitting: January 29, 2013 I dont know

w anyone personally who is really ill except for one person who is chronically and permanently diseased and has been under doctors care for many years. Old age is not illness, but if I use myself as my own client, I can always use some improvement. From what Ive read, I seem to be a combination of Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholic and Phlegmatic. Ive never been considered a normal type of person and I dont fit into any particular category, probably for the above reason. I fit somewhat into all the categories. I have a lot of food allergies, which Ive read recently is caused by leaky gut, which I never heard of and nobody, including my physicians have ever recommended doing anything except avoiding what Im allergic to. Wikipedia states that leaky gut syndrome is not an established diagnosis except in alternative medicine. However, I sometimes have lack of energy, and I could use more energy to exercise Qi Gong or Yoga, and my muscles ache when I do that. I see that under the Chinese Chart: Collapsed Compression : shows Osteoporosis. I know I have that. It also shows Lacks stamina. In the Avicenna point of view. In column one I found loose teeth and tooth spaces. I just had all my teeth pulled out this past summer because my teeth were breaking off like they were glass. I assume that is because of Osteoporosis as well. The Avicenna charts column one also shows lethargy and weak limbs. I am much better since I lost 110 pounds, but I need more improvement. I found a questionnaire on the Four Temperaments in a book by Randy Rolfe, J.D. M.A. that I thought would help narrow down what Temperament I am. Following is the questionnaire: (1) My basic skeletal structure might best be characterized as: C squarish, solid, robust, larger than average for my sex P rounded, childlike, smaller than average

M willowy, long, delicate, tall S angular, curvy, compact U cant decide (ask a friend) My face is definitely squarish (C) (2) My facial features include mostly M oval shape, shallow set, open eyes, even front teeth, wide smile, high cheekbones, high forehead S heart shape, deep set eyes, small mouth, crowded teeth, small pointed chin, forehead narrowing towards top, widows peak at hairline C Squarish shape, broadish forehead, big teeth, squared jaw, rounded eyes, relatively close together P Rounded face, small teeth youthful smile, rounded cheeks, almond eyes U cant decide (ask a friend) I have C (squarish shape, M high cheekbones, C crowded teeth, S widows peak at hairline. (3) When (and if) I put on weight, it goes mostly to my S outside of thighs, inside of things, pear shape M back of upper arms and butt, hourglass shape, belly in men C Waist, back of shoulders, breasts in women, neck in men, inverted pear P all over, knees, face, apple shape U cant decide (dont ask a friend! You dont want to know what they have noticed. I have M back of upper arms and butt, hourglass shape. I also have P knees, and face. (4) My hands are: S small, short, would never make it in nail polish ad M one of my best features, long, tapered C big, squarish, good for handshake P delicate, small U cant decide (compare with some friends) I choose M - My hands are long and tapered I have a great wide range reach on the piano keyboard. (5) When I get angry, I tend to: C take over, win through intimidation S argue, persuade, convince, jabber on, bluster, bombast M deny, accuse, blame, withdraw, sulk P pout, act out, yell, cry, complain U cant decide (ask a friend)

I will S argue, M withdraw, blame and sulk, and P yell, and complain loudly (6) When I am happy and excited, I tend to: P exclaim, want to play and laugh with good friends M want to celebrate, get creative, dance, sing, often by myself C feel superconfident, plan big things, enroll others in my vision S want to throw a party, get others to feel the same way U dont know, maybe never feel that way (with awareness of your humors you soon will!! I am definitely C Ive been planning a spiritual health-wellness community since I started dreaming it in 1991. I am also S want others to feel the same way (7) If someone I just met is nasty to me, I am most likely to: S respond with sarcasm and hope not to meet them again M go out of my way to avoid them C tell them off mightily P give them a second chance U cant decide I would definitely be M and go way out of the way never to see them again. (8) My favorite snack foods fall mostly into this category: C salted peanuts, chips or a quick hamburger M sweets, chocolate, bread, sugar, cookies S buttery pastries, cheesecake, cinnamon buns, gingerbread and cream cheese P milk, cheese, fruit, sweetened yogurts U never snack (good, but if you did .) The only one I wouldnt choose if I didnt have so many allergies is P. Before my allergies I would eat ALL the rest. I was a potato chip fanatic, and a cheesecake fanatic. I also was a baking fiend when my kids were young and I baked every day, including our own bread and pastries. Now that Ive lost over 100 pounds, I only snack on canned fruit mostly what I grow and can myself. (9) The kind of exercise I like most is: C highly competitive M fast moving with lots of variety S self regulated, on my own, rhythmic P with a group, noncompetitive

U never exercise (you will when you know more about what you want as a result of knowing your humors) I HATE exercise, but I realize I need to and like Qi Gong, and Tai Chi, but my exercise is mostly gardening and digging in the dirt on my hands and knees. Id probably have to choose S (10) I am attracted to men who appear P big and strong with wide forehead, big chest, powerful look S tall and wiry with tall forehead, intellectual look C smaller and youthful looking with rounded features, smiling eyes M shorter and athletic looking with well-formed butt, may have early hairline recession, intellectual look U love them all (try to discern a preference) My first husband was S, my second husband was P, my third partner is more M. My friends tend to be S. I always go for intellect mostly. My 1st husband was a hard worker, good father, good provider and very religious. (and controlling like my Father) My 2nd husband was a poet, alcoholic, drug addict and extremely controlling) (3rd partner is a brilliant mind, an ex-football player and loves to play golf now that he is retired, and we talk endlessly about dreams and their meanings, and Kabbalah (The tree of life) and Sacred Geometry. He is also controlling but in a gentler way. We have great conversations, and he does radio interviews all over the world about his studies, which include crop circles along with Sacred Geometry. (11) I am attracted to women who appear S shapely, tall, and big breasted with narrow ankles, long fingers M medium build and hour-glass figured with delicate facial features P strong and athletic-looking with wide shoulder, small hips C small and youthful looking with rounded face and body U love them all (try to discern a preference) My female friends are always smart, someone I can learn something from. Doesnt matter what they look like. Ive never met personally my best friends and we talk for hours on the phone. (12) My ideal career would be more like: C leading a top-notch corporation or organization S teaching people how to enjoy all the life has to offer M creating a masterpiece of art, literature, or culture P helping people overcome challenges in different areas of their lives. U dont have a clue (what do you like most about your current work) I am a combination of C, S, and P, and I am creating a spiritual health-wellness community and I love working with real estate and working in the office (thats

been my career in the past even though Im retired now) I was a property manager, an executive secretary, worked in purchasing at another company and was an excellent secretary. I was trained by the best of them. I currently work harder than I did before I retired. I have nine websites, one of which is based on dreams and its extremely popular. Greatdreams.com I also run 12 e-mail groups, each one on a different topic. Im also on facebook with several groups which are very popular. I do a lot of articles (called blogs) on many different topics. (13) Success for me is closest to:

P having a rewarding family life C being all that I can be (a leader) S setting an example to others of extraordinary living M getting the most out of life U dont know (you will soon) When I was young, I was P. After bad marriages, I am now C and S (14) The pattern of my ideal day is closet to: M sleep late, lively after breakfast, sleepy after lunch, sometimes stay up late. S sleep consistently, love mornings and evenings C sleep less than most people, going all day, relax early evening P lots of sleep, early to bed, enjoy daytime best U cant decide (ask spouse or relative) I would choose C I sleep well (dream a lot and journal them and research meanings) I am usually up around 3 or 3:30 a.m. and I spend most of my day working on various things from researching, writing blogs and articles, I have 9 websites, written 4 books, have 12 e-mail lists, and teach many people about a variety of things Im interested in. (15) My tendency with meals is: C I like a big protein breakfast and dinner, not big on sweets S I love breakfast, could skip dinner, like small protein meals P I dont pay attention to meals, eat fruit, pasta, and dairy, not eggs M I eat a light breakfast if any, like a large lunch, eat muffins, pasta, bagels, or vegetables for snacks U cant tell I choose C, no more sugar for me at this time of my life. (16) My favorite weather and time of year is: S warm and wet, spring, flowers, and trees blooming all over, time of sowing, rebirth M cold and dry, autumn time of harvest, between the summer heat and the solitude of winter

C hot and dry, summer, everything in glorious fullness, most active, alive time P cold and wet, winter, quiet, cold breezes, cozy family feeling U no opinion (knowing your humor will help you come to embrace lots of things more consciously that really make you feel good!) I am 100% S, I cant wait for spring and plant seeds, and see kittens born, and seedlings coming up and growing and digging in the dirt and planting. I HATE winter and cold. I have a heated greenhouse so I can grow plants all year round. I get depressed with low light and less sunshine. (17) I pay best attention when things come to me by way of: P touch - show me, can I touch it, hold it? That really touches me. M sound Let me hear your opinion and then Ill tell you. I hear you, that sounds right to me. S smell/taste Let me just see how it feels. It feels right to me. C sight Ill believe it when I see it. Lets just see. I can see it now. I see, I see. I dont know (if someone shows you a flower by the road, what do you do?) I would choose P. If I saw a flower by the road, I want to know what it is and grow it myself. I do that a lot, including trees. (18) When I make a decision M I think long and hard to decide what is the best course and often reexamine my choice if there are any glitches but defend my choice actively against others opinions. P I take my time, gather opinions, and then make my choice, and may reconsider if trusted friends advise caution S I make a quick assessment, wait for a sense of intuition, decide, and then stick with it, but remain flexible about little things C I make quick decisions, go with my gut, and rarely look back U undecided (maybe P?) I sense that S and C are very similar. I rarely go with P if I dont feel it in my gut first, and have made bad mistakes (1st and 2nd husbands for example) (I was married to #1 husband for almost 25 years before I gave up on him and his abuse) I expected both husbands to change with wisdom and neither one did. I thought I could fix them. My psychiatrist said I had a Messiah complex. After going through the questionnaire, I still think I am a combination of Temperaments. There is way more to me than the questionnaire reveals. I studied carefully and downloaded articles on every important person mentioned in your texts. I had the hardest time with what pragmatism meant, and what Temperament I am, so I ended up doing a blog article on Apollonian and

Dionysian Philosophy and found some cartoons that explained Temperaments better than the texts did. I think youll like the cartoons: http://www.greatdreams.com/blog-2013/dee-blog417.html I tend to believe that Im a pretty balanced person, but when I compare what I think and do, Im very different than most people I know. The television I watch, and the books I read (which are voluminous) are totally different than relatives and acquaintances. I make long distance friends with people who like the same things I do or have something to teach me. Ive never met anyone locally who is anything like me (Im like a fish out of water) All my real friends are telephone friends or e-mail friends. I have a lot of followers on my websites, on facebook and groups I run who are all interested in the same things I am, but they are acquaintances and read what I write. Its rare to find anyone who knows anything of value. (Knows being the keyword) Those people I read about on the internet think they know a lot about the things Im interested in, but when I read what they write, they really dont write anything current its mostly historical and/or wrong. Thats not just an opinion its fact. They dont dig into things like I do when I research and they come to the wrong conclusions, or they stick with religious beliefs instead of looking for real truth. Ive been searching all my life and now that Im pretty much older than everyone else, perhaps its just that they are younger and still searching like I did. The important thing to realize from all those experiences is that I have learned from the mistakes I made in the past and am able to advise others not to make those same mistakes that I did, and am able to tell them what the consequences of those errors. That has been of immense help over the years when I talk to others. I get a real kick out of reading the descriptions in your own article about the Four Temperaments. Here is an example: Phlematic: hairless bodies. Ive always been grateful that I didnt have to spend my life shaving my arms and legs like other women Ive known. I just dont have any hair on my legs anymore (I did as a teen just a little) My hair on my head is thin, but so were both of my parents, and my sons (who take after my Dad) are balding. One of them was getting so bald, he shaved his head and he wasnt even 50 years old. Hes cutie with his shaved head. I noticed that Sweet potatoes is recommended. I used to eat cooked Sweet potatoes mixed with cooked fruit for breakfast every day since I couldnt eat cereal, and ended up with way too much estrogen in my system and they wanted to do a biopsy because I started bleeding after menopause, so I quit eating the sweet potatoes and the problem went away.

I do fit this type very well according to the descriptions. Sanguine: I used to eat all those foods, take diet pills galore, ate lots of sugar and bread. But when I got allergic to bread, that eliminated lots of different food that had wheat in them, and got allergic to corn, and that eliminated a lot more. Then when I was over 100 pounds overweight and lost 110 pounds by eliminating sugar and cheese, Im just not the same person anymore. Choleric: I love white fish and albacore tuna. I eat from that category mostly, but I never eat fast. Ive always been a very slow eater and enjoy the tastes so much. Raw foods are a problem with me since I had all my teeth pulled out, but I have created smoothies as an alternative. Melancholic. I really dont fit into this category much, though when I lived in Wisconsin and we had dark days and cold days at 40 to 60 below zero, I would have to say that I was a little more tendency at that time, but living in California has changed that for me. Here we have sunshine from May through October all the time and quite a bit of sun even during the rainy season which we are in right now. I really love the weather in California. That has pretty much ended my SAD days where I needed to buy light bulbs with sun rays coming from them. Now just my plants get those bulbs. I noticed that you mentioned that Plegmatic and Melancholic people should engage in intense exercise and intense conversations. Since I HATE exercise totally, I LOVE intense conversations and I could almost say intense conversations for me are like having an orgasm. Your link for http://home.earthlink.net/-mkcooks/HumouralTheory.htm Is no longer valid. That page is now at: http://www.mkcc.rhawn.com/MKccfiles/HumouralTheory.html That was a great resource. I saved it to my computer and printed it out as well. FOOD BASICS I eat a very boring diet. Most people couldnt tolerate it, but since I have food allergies, this is what I currently eat: Eggs, potatoes, rice, cottage cheese, various fruits, my favorites are peaches and pears, and some blueberries which send me to the bathroom with diarrhea, but its a good cure for constipation. I also love broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, green beans and occasionally baked beans mixed with rice home

cooked not canned. I also eat albacore tuna mixed with sliced hard-boiled eggs almost every day for lunch, and white fish on shopping day because I want it fresh not frozen. Occasionally, I mix rare ground beef with ground turkey, pulverized onions and peppers (homegrown) and brown it and add chopped tomatoes (also homegrown) and serve it over cooked potatoes or rice. Very little salt, and no sugar. Without teeth, I have a problem chewing fresh greens, so we dont have them often, but I like tuna salad with fresh spinach leaves and sliced cucumbers. That is a rarity however. Since Ive read that soy is bad for the brain, I started making my own salad dressing out of one egg, a tablespoon of lemon juice, a tablespoon of hot dog relish (mustard and chopped pickles) a dab of sugar, and a cup of light olive oil. I use my Vitamix machine to mix it up. Its used raw and then refrigerated. It keeps for a week. Its really good with my tuna and hard-boiled eggs. I always use light olive oil for cooking. FOODS AND HERBS AS CURES I was offered the monthly pill and the yearly injection for osteoporosis by my doctor and refused it. Studies show that the drugs used for this causes a greater than normal increase in Esophogeal cancer. A search of my computer harddrive shows no herbs that cure osteoporosis. I found this on the internet:

Getting enough calcium and vitamin D is essential for warding off osteoporosis. For even stronger bones, avoid these everyday osteoporosis diet dangers. Osteoporosis Diet Danger 1: Salt Is Bad for the Bone! Salt can pose a great obstacle to a sturdy skeleton. Research has found that postmenopausal women with a high-salt diet lose more bone minerals than other women of the same age. "The salt content of the typical American diet is one of the reasons why calcium requirements are so high," says Linda K. Massey, PhD, RD, a professor of human nutrition at Washington State University in Spokane. Massey says studies show that regular table salt, not simply sodium, causes calcium loss, weakening bones with time. Thats important because Americans get about 90% of our sodium through salt.

We also get about twice as much sodium as we should. The 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans advise limiting sodium to 2,300 milligrams a day equal to a teaspoon of salt. But most Americans get at least 4,000 milligrams a day. "Generally speaking, for every 2,300 milligrams of sodium you take in, about 40 milligrams of calcium is lost in the urine," Massey explains. Getting the recommended amounts of calcium and vitamin D every day helps offset bone loss from salt. Adults up to age 50 require 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily -- the equivalent of three 8-ounce glasses of milk. Older adults need 1,200 milligrams of daily calcium about half a glass more of milk. As for vitamin D: People need 200 International Units (IU) of vitamin D a day until age 50. Adults need 400 IU of vitamin D from the ages of 51 to 70 years. Seniors need 600 IU of vitamin D a day after age 70. Good sources of vitamin D are natural sunlight and from fortified milk, egg yolks, saltwater fish, liver, and supplements. Of all the dangers to bone, salt is perhaps the hardest to curb. Salt shows up in nearly all processed foods, including whole grain breads, breakfast cereals, and fast foods. Removing the salt shaker from the table, and cooking without added salt, helps. But avoiding processed foods provides the biggest bang for the buck. Processed foods supply 75% of the sodium we eat. If you want to get a grip on this diet danger, here are some of the highest-salt foods to limit or avoid. Choose no-added salt versions whenever possible. Processed meats, such as deli turkey and ham, and hot dogs Fast food, such as pizza, burgers, tacos, and fries Processed foods, including regular and reduced-calorie frozen meals Regular canned soups and vegetables and vegetable juices Baked products, including breads and breakfast cereals Scan food labels for sodium content. There's a good chance the majority of it comes from salt, so the lower the sodium, the better for bones. When you dine out, check the web sites of your favorite restaurants for the sodium content of the dishes you order most often. If your typical meals exceed 800 milligrams of sodium, opt for lowersodium alternatives, such as grilled fish or chicken, steamed vegetables, baked potato, and salad. Request that your meal be prepared without salt, too. If you think you cant lower your salt sufficiently, eat plenty of potassium-rich foods, such as bananas, tomatoes, and orange juice. Potassium may help decrease the loss of calcium.

My doctor states that since people are having a problem with UV rays from the sun no one is getting enough Vitamin D and everyone needs a supplement. I have eliminated all the foods listed above from my diet, and cut down on salt.

My biggest complaint is that foods are rather tasteless except for fresh veggies right out of the garden. That is my goal to grow all my own veggies. Regarding the amount of milk to be drunk, I have to disagree with this article. Milk is never to be consumed after babyhood and that should be Mothers milk. Soy is an unsafe substitute as are all canned milks with sugar added. People have started using raw milk from organic cows which is an alternative, and cheese eaters might also want to get organic cheese as well. That has a drawback however. Though some states allow the sales of organic milk and cheese, including raw, unpastuerized milk and cheese, the Federal Government has started to forcibly close down stores and co-ops which sell such products at gunpoint. Until that problem is solved, I dont advise going to such places without knowing in advance that its safe to go to them. Its pretty hard to have your own milk cow unless you are a farmer with enough land. A goat would be easier as they dont need as much grass to eat as a cow does. That is a matter of taste as some people dont like the taste of goat milk or cheese.

COOKING FOR HUMORS Ive already stated my various food allergies, so I wont delineate them again. For my Chronic Fatigue which is pretty well under control by not eating regular beef, in addition, one should not partake of caffeine, colas or sugar, which I have already quit. I stopped drinking coffee at age 42 because it gave me heart palpitations, so I dont even miss it. Once you stop eating sugar, you stop missing that too. Eating sugar is addictive, and like all other drugs, you have to kick the habit. Substitutes just make it worse. I did a search for the word sanguine in Culpeppers herbal and it does not come up. It does have 10 references to Choleric The first reference is for onions which are hot and dry. It does not recommend them for Choleric people, but states they are great for phlegmatic people. That is good because I love them. It recommend Lettice (I assume it means Lettuce) and states that it is cold and moist. It recommends that it is better boiled, which I never heard of. I cant even imagine boiling lettuce. It recommends Chamomele flowers boiled which are heat and eliminates gas and casts out choleric humours and eliminates aches and pains caused by traveling. It would be hard to come up with Chamomele flowers while traveling I assume, though one could use them at home. I have a packet of the seeds which I just received and plan to grow them. They are a perennial.

It recommends Gum Arabic dissolved in the white of an egg to place on burns. It also eliminates choleric sharp humours. I have a feeling that Culpeppers use of the word humour is not the same as we are calling humors. Distilled waters: The qualities and appropriation of the simple Distilled Waters Simple distilled waters either cool or heat: such as cool, either cool the blood or choler. Waters cooling the blood. Lettice, Purslain, Water Lilies, Violets, Sorrel Endive, Succory, Fumitory. Waters cooling and repressing choleric humours, or vapours in the head Nightshade, Lettice, Water Lilies, Plantain, Poppies, viz. The flowers both of white black and red Poppies, black Culpepper later in his article states that all distilled waters are heating and therefore should be used by melancholy and flegmatic (his spelling) people. I have a water distiller, and used it for three months during my weight loss period for cataracts, which is did not help with, though it removed the minerals from my eyes, but brought on my blindness even faster. I have not used it since then. I dont know if I will again, but only on a short time basis if I do. He has a great recipe for making Peach Flower syrup, but then of course you dont get any peaches without the flowers and I love peaches which I eat every day, but Ill keep it mind when my tree gets bigger. It takes away fever apparently.

I never heard of that either. He has great recipes for wines and syrups, so Ill keep those handy for harvest times this year. This recipe is a little strange and I doubt I will use it: (Its in his pill section) Culpeper. They strengthen the stomach, heart, and liver, as also the bowels, they help the cholic, and fluxes of blood, as also bleeding at the nose if you snuff up the powder of them, disburden the body of salt, fretting, choleric humours. You may carry them about you, and take them at your pleasure. Phlegmatic (flegmatic Culeppers spelling Expel wind. Wormwood, Garlick, Dill, Smallage, Chamomel, Epithimum, Fennel, Juniper, Marjoram, Origanum, Savory both winter and summer. Tansy is good to cleanse the stomach and bowels of rough viscous flegm, and humours that stick to them, which the flegmatic constitution of the winter usually infects the body of man with, and occasions gouts and other diseases of like nature and lasting long. This was the original of that custom to eat Tansys in the spring: the herb may be made into a conserve with sugar, or boil it in wine and drink the decoction, or make the juice into a syrup with sugar, which you will. I dont know what Smallage is, but I have the seeds of the other herbs and plan to grow them this year. I bought all my herb seeds at Horizon Herbs in Oregon. The have a fabulous catalog on line including photographs and I downloaded the whole thing onto my computer. I spent over $200 in seeds with them as well. Culpeppers last reference is this: Under the topic of Hardening Medicine. It doesnt specify what to use. He goes into detail of the different types of medicines, Emollient, Hardening, Loosening, Drawing, Discussive, Repelling, Cleansing, Emplasters, Suppuring, Provoking Urine, Breeding Flesh, Glutatinive, Resisting Poisons, and Purging, including the dangers of Purging. 4. Hardness differs from all these, for the parts of the body swell, and are filled with flegmatic humours, or melancholy blood, which at last grows hard. I did find this reference: Flegm is made of meat not perfectly digested; it fortifies the virtue expulsive, makes the body slippery, fit for ejection; it fortifies the brain by its consimilitude with it; yet it spoils apprehension by its antipathy to it. It qualifies choler, cools and moistens the heart, thereby sustaining it, and the whole body, from the fiery effects, which continual motion

would produce. Its receptacle is the lungs, and is governed by Venus, some say by the Moon, perhaps it may be governed by them both, it is cold and moist in quality. Culpepper states: Of all these humours blood is the chief, all the rest are superfluities of blood; yet are they necessary superfluities, for without any of them, man cannot live. Namely; Choler is the fiery superfluities, Flegm, the Watery; Melancholy, the Earthly.

Melancholic: There are only two references Memory is seated in the hinder cell of the brain, it is the great register to the little world; and its office is to record things either done and past, or to be done. It is in quality cold and dry, melancholic, and therefore generally melancholic men have best memories, and most tenacious every way. It is under the dominion of Saturn, and is fortified by his influence, but purged by the luminaries. That sentence has both melancholics in it. I did find this: Melancholy is the sediment of blood, cold and dry in quality, fortifying the retentive faculty, and memory; makes men sober, solid, and staid, fit for study; stays the unbridled toys of lustful blood, stays the wandering thoughts, and reduces them home to the centre: its receptacle is in the spleen, and it is governed by Saturn. Of all these humours blood is the chief, all the rest are superfluities of blood; yet are they necessary superfluities, for without any of them, man cannot live.

My husband has a super memory. He can repeat word for word things he has studied and never miss a word. He does radio interviews and lectures like that. In my own case, I can remember where I read something and know what book it was in, or what file its in, but not be able to repeat exactly what it said, but I can find it in minutes. On the other hand, friends tell me Im a walking encyclopedia, which tells me their knowledge base isnt as wide as mine perhaps, but they know things I never heard of, so in those cases, they know more than I do and can teach me what I dont know.

COLD AND WET Culpepper has no references to this. He does mention cool and moist:

Violets, (to wit, the blue ones,) cool and moisten, provoke sleep, loosen the belly, resist fevers, help inflammations, correct the heat of choler, ease the pains in the head, help the roughness of the wind-pipe, diseases in the throat, inflammations in the breast and sides, plurisies, open stoppings of the liver, and help the yellow jaundice. The sight resides in the eyes, and particularly in the christaline humour. It is in quality cold and moist, and governed by the luminaries. They who have them weak in their genesis, have always weak sights; if one of them be so, the weakness possesses but one eye.

HOT AND WET Culpepper has no references to this He does state this about hot and moist: The taste resides in the palate, which is placed at the root of the tongue on purpose to discern what food is congruous for the stomach, and what not; as the meseraik veins are placed to discern what nourishment is proper for the liver to convert into blood. In some very few men, and but a few, and in those few, but in few instances these two tasters agree not, and that is the reason some men covet meats that make them sick, viz. the taste craves them, and the meseraik veins reject them. In quality hot and moist, and is ruled by Jupiter.

HOT AND DRY Culpepper has 144 references to this. I have listed just a few of them. 3. In mixed diseases there lies some difficulty, for sometimes two parts of the body are afflicted with contrary humours, as sometimes the liver is afflicted with choler and water, as when a man hath both the dropsy and the yellow-jaundice; and this is usually mortal. In the former, suppose the brain be too cool and moist, and the liver be too hot and dry; thus do; 1. Keep your head outwardly warm. 2. Accustom yourself to the smell of hot herbs. 3. Take a pill that heats the head at night going to bed. 4. In the morning take a decoction that cools the liver, for that quickly passes the stomach, and is at the liver immediately. Choler is made of meat more than perfectly concocted; and it is the spume or froth of blood: it clarifies all the humours, heats the body, nourishes the apprehension, as blood doth the judgment. It is in quality hot and dry; fortifies the attractive faculty, as blood

doth the digestive; moves man to activity and valour: its receptacle is the gall, and it is under the influence of Mars. Imagination is seated in the forepart of the brain; it is hot and dry in quality, quick, active, always working; it receives vapours from the heart, and coins them into thoughts: it never sleeps, but always is working, both when the man is sleeping and waking; only when Judgment is awake it regulates the Imagination, which runs at random when Judgment is asleep, and forms any thought according to the nature of the vapour sent up to it. Mercury is out of question the disposer of it. The smelling resides in the nose, is in quality hot and dry, choleric, and that is the reason choleric creatures have so good smells, as dogs. It is under the influence of Mars. The attractive virtue is hot and dry, hot by quality, active, or principal, and that appears because the fountain of all heat is attractive, viz. the sun. Dry by a quality passive, or an effect of its heat; its office is to remain in the body, and call for what nature wants. COLD AND DRY Melancholy is the sediment of blood, cold and dry in quality, fortifying the retentive faculty, and memory; makes men sober, solid, and staid, fit for study; stays the unbridled toys of lustful blood, stays the wandering thoughts, and reduces them home to the centre: its receptacle is in the spleen, and it is governed by Saturn. Of all these humours blood is the chief, all the rest are superfluities of blood; yet are they necessary superfluities, for without any of them, man cannot live. The hearing resides in the ears; is in quality, cold and dry, melancholy, and under the dominion of Saturn.

VIRTUES: Culpepper states that all Virtues are naturally evil and corrupted by Adams fall. Virtues come in various humours, all ruled by different planets. I was under the assumption that Virtues are good things to have, so perhaps he has a different interpretation of the word itself? This is what he says: The four administering virtues are, attractive, digestive, retentive, and expulsive. The attractive virtue is hot and dry, hot by quality, active, or principal, and that appears because the fountain of all heat is attractive, viz. the sun. Dry by a quality passive, or an effect of its heat; its office is to remain in the body, and call for what nature wants.

It is under the influence of the Sun, say authors, and not under Mars, because he is of a corrupting nature, yet if we cast an impartial eye upon experience, we shall find, that martial men call for meat none of the least, and for drink the most of all other men, although many times they corrupt the body by it, and therefore I see no reason why Mars being of the same quality with the Sun, should not have a share in the dominion. It is in vain to object, that the influence of Mars is evil, and therefore he should have no dominion over this virtue; for then, 1. By the same rule, he should have no dominion at all in the body of man. 2. All the virtues in man are naturally evil, and corrupted by Adam's fall. This attractive virtue ought to be fortified when the Moon is in fiery signs, viz. Aries and Sagitary, but not in Leo, for the sign is so violent, that no physic ought to be given when the Moon is there: (and why not Leo, seeing that is the most attractive sign of all; and that's the reason such as have it ascending in their genesis, are such greedy eaters.) If you cannot stay till the Moon be in one of them, let one of them ascend when you administer the medicine. The digestive virtue is hot and moist, and is the principal of them all, the other like handmaids attend it. The attractive virtue draws that which it should digest, and serves continually to feed and supply it. The retentive virtue, retains the substance with it, till it be perfectly digested. The expulsive virtue casteth out, expels what is superfluous by digestion. It is under the influence of Jupiter, and fortified by his herbs and plants, &c. In fortifying it, let your Moon be in Gemini, Aquary, or the first half of Libra, or if matters be come to that extremity, that you cannot stay till that time, let one of them ascend, but both of them together would do better, always provided that the Moon be not in the ascendent. I cannot believe the Moon afflicts the ascendent so much as they talk of, if she be well dignified, and in a sign she delights in. The retentive virtue is in quality cold and dry; cold, because the nature of cold is to compress, witness the ice; dry, because the nature of dryness, is to keep and hold what is compressed. It is under the influence of Saturn, and that is the reason why usually Saturnine men are so covetous and tenacious. In fortifying of it, make use of the herbs and plants, &c. of Saturn, and let the Moon be in Taurus or Virgo, Capricorn is not so good, say authors, (I can give no reason for that neither;) let not Saturn nor his ill aspect molest the ascendent. The expulsive faculty is cold and moist; cold because that compasses the superfluities; moist, because that makes the body slippery and fit for ejection, and disposes it to it. It is under the dominion of Luna, with whom you may join Yerus, because she is of the same nature. Also in whatsoever is before written, of the nature of the planets, take notice, that fixed stars of the same nature, work the same effect. In fortifying this, (which ought to be done in all purgations,) let the Moon be in Cancer, Scorpio, or Pisces, or let one of these signs ascend. Although I did what I could throughout the whole book to express myself in such a language as might be understood by all, and therefore avoided terms of art as much as might be, Yet, 1. Some words of necessity fall in which need explanation. 2. It would be very tedious at the end of every receipt to repeat over

and over again, the way of administration of the receipt, or ordering your bodies after it, or to instruct you in the mixture of medicines, and indeed would do nothing else but stuff the book full of tautology.

FINAL NOTES: After reading all the notes in the lesson and my responses to your questions, I can see that I need to add more of a variety of green foods into my diet, which I already knew that my diet was not really balanced, even though greatly restricted from before my diet days. My foods eaten prior to my diet days were restricted only because of allergies, but outside of the green foods I need to add, my diet is quite a bit healthier than it was. I also need to add in the exercise and will have to force myself to do more movement whether I like it or not, and get in more Vitamin D. I think with spring coming, that will be a little easier to do. Dolores Finney
